When a classmate suddenly explodes as Mara (Katherine Langford) leans under her desk to get a pencil she dropped, her fellow students panic. Covered in blood, they run screaming into the hallways. Mara, who has blood only on her shoes, seems to take it all in stride. But when another senior student explodes, and then another, it becomes obvious that whatever is happening is only affecting the seniors of Covington High. Realizing that anyone could be next, fellow senior Dylan (Charlie Plummer) admits he has had a crush on Mara for awhile. They begin to hang out together, but things get complicated as more and more of their classmates explode like blood-filled balloons. The seniors are given medicine after being put in lockdown for testing and questioning in an effort to keep the outbreak under control. Our discussion with Shane covers numerous topics, including the "Intellectual Dark Web" (or as Shane says "the academics that circle around Joe Rogan​ for some reason"); the pseudoscientific claims surrounding race, ethnicity, and IQ; and an examination of observable patterns within far right insurgency, as examined in Shane's recent piece in Commune Magazine​ 'A History of Violence,’ which examines the case of James Alex Fields — found guilty for the murder of Heather Heyer at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville in 2017 when Fields drove his car through a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heyer and injuring 28. In Shane’s piece ‘A History of Violence’ and in this interview, Shane unpacks the observable patterns within far-right ideology and propaganda that has led individuals, like James Alex Fields, to commit seemingly random acts of violence, and how a combination of elements inherent in far-right ideology and propaganda cultivates a drive in alienated individuals to commit violent acts towards those perceived as an existential threat. In attracting alienated individuals and (in)directly encouraging them to act in ways that are violent and insurgent, the ideology of the far-right generates an imperative to commit acts of hate without necessitating any direct connection to any particular movement or ideology within the far-right, as has been the case with Fields. Shane describes the narratives that thrive within right-wing media spaces, including an examination of the pseudoscience of the “natural heritability” of intelligence — in relation to race and ethnicity — that continue to circulated within these spaces, as well as the media personalities that use racist, sexist, and chauvinist narratives to cultivate a base of followers, regardless of the wide range of scientific research that refute these claims on the matter. Also in this discussion, we address the government shutdown, workers rights, and the recent controversy surrounding the confrontation between Native elder Nathan Phillips and the students of Covington High at the Indigenous Peoples March last month. Ever been somewhere and people around you start doing something out of the norm to the point of it being uncomfortable? That's a lack of couth and decorum.  Well this week the world decided to go down that path and Jason Patton and Gary Weed join Mark Bland to discuss all of it. If you haven't been under a rock, you know the story about the kids in MAGA hats getting in the face of a Native American man at a pro-life rally in Washington DC. The story has caught massive attention because of a few things. 1. How the media reported the original incident 2. How the children from Covington High school treated the elder Native man 3. The use of the Trump hat as a sign of the times 4. The discussion of parents and where were the adult supervisors in the situation Mark and the guys discuss these 4 things as they traverse the world of decorum and where we are as a society in 2019. ALSO...the LA Rams made it to the Super Bowl against the Patriots and Gary is a huge Rams fan. This led to some online back and forth between Mark and Gary (being on opposite sides of the game) and a GRIEVANCE once again presented itself. Both Mark and Gary have their complaint and they bring it to the table to discuss live on the air. Who was in the right or wrong? Or were neither?  You find out! Finally, Covington High School, just couldn't get out of their own way. Once the media storm hit, they got caught with video from a basketball game.  This is important because of the MAGA hat and their involvement with something people considered a little off color....well it becomes really off color when the same school from the mass hysteria also seems to have a somewhat racist belief its okay to do blackface, even accentuating the eyes and lips with white makeup like Al jolson did. This wasn't kids making a mistake...this was kids being okay'd by their parents to get away with something the parents knew better about. The guys break all this down and much more on this episode of the Q!
