Over the past two years, five beers that Lapel, Indiana's Pax Verum (https://www.paxverum.com) sent to Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine for review have scored 95 or above. That naturally piqued our interest, so when we planned our Craft Brewers Conference itinerary we made sure to visit the hip outpost an hour north of Indianapolis. Head brewer and co-owner Colt Carpenter cut his teeth working in a homebrew shop before making the jump to the world of professional brewing, and his embrace of high quality and diverse ingredients tracks with that experience of assisting home brewers with their own ingredient choices. Now, he embraces everything from traditional English styles and European lagers to cutting-edge IPAs, but always with a slight contemporary edge. In this episode, Carpenter discusses: building a wider understanding of and familiarity with beer ingredients by working at a homebrew shop sourcing ingredients intentionally with flavor in mind designing robust porter around a specific specialty malt managing challenges with craft malt like increased friability and seasonal variation focusing on freshness while managing color swings with specialty malts avoiding over-oxygenation cool pooling IPAs with flowable hop products building depth in hoppy beers without T-90 pellets finding hop lots that meet flavor goals, without selecting unique flavors and aromas from Michigan-grown varieties And more. Come to a Dehoarding Accountability Zoom Session: http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/ticket Subscribe to the podcast: https://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/subscribe Podcast show notes, links and transcript: http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/  This week, I talk about what happens when I actually let myself feel the tough emotions instead of shutting them down - a pattern that's shaped my life and my struggles with hoarding, self-harm, and eating disorders. After a thought-provoking conversation with Anna Sale on Death, Sex & Money last year, I started questioning whether avoiding feelings has helped or hurt me in the long run and have been trying to process that ever since! I share what it's like to sit with big emotions, experiment with messy ways to cope, and why feeling the feelings might just be a way forward. Avoiding Feelings Realisation that I tend to do anything rather than feel difficult emotions. Recent personal reflection and processing feelings over the past few months. Impact of mental health and a PTSD flare-up on my ability to manage feelings. Connecting Coping Mechanisms to Avoidance Experience with PTSD, self-harm, anorexia, and bulimia as different forms of not feeling or avoiding emotions. Insights from an interview with Anna Sale on Death, Sex & Money that linked these coping together as forms of avoidance. Acknowledgment that these strategies were more than just avoidance - also punitive, protective, and multifaceted. The Cost and Pattern of Emotional Avoidance Compartmentalising as a lifelong coping skill and its negative long-term consequences. Difficulty breaking the habit of not feeling and the impact on my sense of identity. Recognition that suppressing feelings can be as damaging as (or more damaging than) the feelings themselves. Actively Facing and Processing Feelings Engaging in therapy, journaling (both resentful and creative/collage style), and reading poetry to access emotions. Talking more openly with friends as a supportive measure. Forcing myself to do enjoyable activities (like getting outside), which helps counteract avoidance. Community, Connection, and Support Impact of Trauma and Suppression on Daily Life How PTSD and unprocessed sadness began affecting sleep, revealing that suppressing feelings is no longer effective. Discusses the challenge of letting oneself feel emotions, both by choice and when overcome involuntarily. The risks of being overwhelmed and the delicate balance between feeling and avoidance. Learning and Conversations About Emotional Acceptance Revisiting lessons from previous podcast guests about the counterproductivity of suppressing or over-intellectualising feelings. The concept that suppressed emotions may “come out sideways” through other behaviours, like self-harm or hoarding. Nuanced view of coping mechanisms - not labeling them as purely negative since they served protective purposes. Vulnerability, Shame, and Deepening Relationships Gradual willingness to share deeper, more distressing moments with friends. Examining the reasons behind the instinct to hide intense distress. How vulnerability leads to stronger, more meaningful connections. Positive Effects of Feeling the Hard Stuff Discovering that feeling hard emotions increases the capacity to feel positive emotions more deeply. Finding deeper love, joy, and beauty in everyday experiences. Recognising the importance of support systems when exploring difficult emotions. Reflection and Encouragement for Listeners Encourages listeners to be curious about their own patterns of avoidance and coping. Cautions that intentionally feeling emotions is difficult and requires support. The hopeful observation that allowing feelings can be cathartic, gratifying, and healing—even if it's uncomfortable. Before the mainstreaming of Ellen and the hit show Will and Grace, soaps did their best to bring tenderness to LGBTQ+ storylines. That's the nature of the form: It gives room for anyone and everyone to be complex, fleshed out, loved and hated all at once. From supporting roles to legacy characters to complex depictions in their full humanity, from respectability politics to sometimes making missteps, soaps have found ways to evolve their depictions of queer life. Ryan Phillippe played a gay teen in the 1990s on One Life to Live. Eden Riegel played Bianca, Erica Kane's gay daughter in the 2000s on All My Children. Today, progress looks like a villain, according to Days of Our Lives actor Greg Rikaart. “I came on as the ‘gay villain,' if you will, and to me, that felt like the ultimate equality, in that I didn't have to just say the right thing and follow the rules in order to be palatable to the audience,” he said. “And when I would get blowback from some people … I would just argue all those things: That that is further pushing the envelope open by saying, ‘Yeah, we can be multifaceted. We don't all have to be good guys.' ”

Are we going in the right direction as communicators? In an era of dramatic policy shifts, cultural upheaval, and a fractured media landscape, how do we trudge onward through the muck without losing our way? Weighty questions indeed. In this episode of The Trending Communicator, host Dan Nestle sits down with Elie Jacobs, founding partner of Purposeful Advisors, to tackle the thorny issues facing today's communications professionals. With over two decades of experience in public policy and advocacy, Elie brings a wealth of insights to the table. From his early days in President Clinton's post-presidential office to his current role advising startups and mid-size companies, Elie has witnessed firsthand the evolution of the communications profession. This wide-ranging conversation covers critical topics like the impact of AI on truth and objectivity, the challenges of maintaining purpose in a "perma-crisis" environment, and the delicate balance between business imperatives and societal responsibilities. Elie and Dan discuss the pitfalls of chasing trends versus staying true to core business objectives, and debate the proper role of communicators in shaping corporate policies on contentious issues. Throughout the episode, Elie emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, curiosity, and maintaining perspective in an increasingly polarized world. He argues for a return to fundamentals - focusing on clear business purposes rather than getting caught up in the latest social media firestorms. The discussion also touches on generational divides in the workplace and how early career experiences shape communicators' approaches to risk and decision-making. Whether you're a seasoned PR pro or just starting out in the field, this episode offers valuable food for thought on the current state and future direction of strategic communications. Elie's candid insights and Dan's probing questions combine to create a thought-provoking exploration of our profession's most pressing challenges. Don't miss this opportunity to gain fresh perspective on navigating the complex waters of modern corporate communications. Listen in and hear about...  Navigating the perma-crisis era as a communications professional How early career experiences shape strategic advisory skills Balancing business imperatives with societal responsibilities Critical thinking's vital role in the age of AI-driven information Adapting communication strategies to rapid political shifts Purposeful advising: focusing on a company's core mission Nuanced approaches to diversity and inclusion in corporate settings Notable Quotes On Career Beginnings: "The way I got into this was, you know, just sheer dumb luck. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I finished school. And then 911 happened and I picked up with cliche duffel bag of clothes and a duffel bag of GMAT books and LSAT books and GRE books and went off to Israel to try to figure out what to do." - Elie Jacobs [2:30 - 3:57] On the Path to Communications: "I don't know that. You know, people talk about having a calling, right? Some people have calling calling to the pulpit, regardless of what religion it is. Other people have callings to be doctors, other people have callings to be teachers. I'm not sure I've met anybody who has a calling to be a lawyer. I don't think I've ever met somebody who has a calling to be a public relations or communications specialist." - Elie Jacobs [6:48 - 7:15] On Representing Important Figures: "The only thing that was really said to us was you represent him, which also means you're representing his wife, who was then the senator. So that kind of weighs on you a little bit." - Elie Jacobs [12:36 - 12:45] On Dealing with High-Pressure Situations: "Once Bill Clinton completely loses his temper at you, your perspective on things changes a great deal. He lost it at me because I happened to be. I. I was just in the way." - Elie Jacobs [13:40 - 13:50] On the Importance of Critical Thinking: "Critical thinking is something that we actually have to call out now as something that, okay, we, we really need. Critical thinkers used to be almost a given that, you know, you, one of the reasons why either you are hired for an important job or, or that, you know, when you come out of college or wherever you've been, that, you know, critical thinking is part of the resume." - Dan Nestle [18:56 - 19:19] On the Challenges of Objective Truth in Modern Times: "The concept of objective truth has been shattered over the last 10 years. And it's not just, you know, misinformation and creative hyperbole and truth and, you know, truthful lies or whatever the term was that they came up with in the first Trump administration." - Elie Jacobs [27:04 - 27:18] On the Evolution of Media and Truth: "For the better part of three centuries or more. There were editors who present who basically worked on something that was book length every single day and that was the news." - Elie Jacobs [43:02 - 43:12] On the Role of Purpose in Business: "When we talk about purposeful, we're talking about, we're going to help you figure out what your purpose is. Going back to Simon Sinek's golden circle of why, how and what." - Elie Jacobs [51:43 - 51:52] On the Importance of Business Fundamentals: "There has to be a business imperative. You can only be good for society if you're good at business." - Elie Jacobs [1:05:05 - 1:05:11] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X Elie Jacobs Purposeful Advisors | Website Elie Jacobs | LinkedIn Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)

The interaction between the two individuals presents a nuanced picture regarding potential avoidance or the establishment of a "friend zone" dynamic. On one hand, the recipient's initial terse responses and their emphasis on their current stable housing situation could suggest a desire to maintain some emotional distance or boundaries. Their direct questioning of the initiator's motives for inquiring about their housing might also indicate a degree of guardedness. From the initiator's perspective, sharing a Facebook group related to the recipient's interests and expressing empathetic concern about their well-being, while caring, might be interpreted as leaning towards a friendly connection rather than a direct romantic pursuit. Notably, the recipient does not reciprocate the "hey babe" with overtly flirtatious language. However, it's important to acknowledge that the recipient did express a positive sentiment about seeing the initiator and even shared vulnerable information about their past homelessness, indicating a level of trust and engagement that contradicts outright avoidance. While subtle indicators suggest the relationship might be navigating towards a more platonic or cautiously developing connection, it's not definitively clear that an "avoid" or "friend zone" dynamic is firmly established, as there are also elements of positive initial connection and a willingness to share personal experiences.Contact KOP for professional podcast production, imaging, and web design services at http://www.kingofpodcasts.comSupport KOP by subscribing to his YouTube channel and search for King Of PodcastsFollow KOP on Twitter or Facebook @kingofpodcasts or Instagram @thekingofpodcastsListen to KOP's other programs, Podcasters Row… and the Wrestling is Real Wrestling Podcast and The Broadcasters Podcast.Buy KOP a Coffee https://buymeacoffee.com/kingofpodcastsDrop KOP a PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=3TAB983ZQPNVLDrop KOP a CashApp https://cash.app/$kingofallpodcastsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/depraved-and-debaucherous--5267208/support.

Whether you're a radical Progressive or Traditionalist, are you ready to be Free? Join Jews and Gentiles, blacks and whites, progressives and traditionalists and return to April 4th 1969 (MLK's first Yartzeit) at Arthur Waskow's radical and controversial Freedom Seder. I recently picked up a first edition of this Mao-sized red booklet, and it's far more nuanced than I expected. Radical progressives will be surprised by its Jewish particularism and its defense of taking up arms to defend one's people. Traditionalists will be struck by how rooted it is in Rabbinic tradition and delighted by the meaningful rituals it re-introduces. We explore how Waskow, a typical 60's social activist who only later became a rabbi, created an "activist Midrash" that balances Jewish particularity with universal themes. Key Takeaways Universality meets particularity: Waskow's Haggadah balances universal themes with deeply Jewish elements, challenging both progressives and traditionalists Ritual innovations: The Freedom Seder introduces thought-provoking additions to the traditional Seder, including a moment of silent meditation before candle lighting. Nuanced perspectives: Waskow doesn't shy away from addressing difficult topics, including Jewish shortcomings and the complexities of liberation. Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly columnSpring is here. What wines are especially suited for the warming days and the return of plants from dormancy? There are many happy choices.Bright acidity, floral aromatics, freshness, lightness, and lower alcohol are hallmarks of wines that pair with the dynamic character of the season. Here are some classic suggestions:• Sauvignon blanc. New Zealand efforts burst with lime and passionfruit and aromas of freshly mowed grass. Efforts from France's Loire Valley lean more toward flinty minerality. West Coast sauv blancs can be silky with notes of honeydew melon. All work with spring salads, seafood, goat cheese.• Riesling. Dry versions from Germany's Mosel region deliver floral aromas and crisp apple, sometimes honeysuckle and nectarine. Very versatile. Pair with a picnic.• Vinho verde. Portugal's light, high acidity, slightly effervescent, lower alcohol wine is another picnic pleaser with citrus and apple notes. Seafood is classic pairing, so is a fresh tomato and cucumber salad. It also pairs well with spicy foods. Serve well chilled.• Dry rosé. Of course. Provencal styles deliver strawberry, watermelon, lemon-lime, grapefruit, delicate whiffs of roses and other flowers. Light bodied, crisp, refreshing. Another very versatile food wine and can be enjoyed sipped by itself during a lovely spring afternoon.• Pinot noir. The light red is versatile. Enjoy ripe strawberry flavors amid silky tannins.• Gamay. These wines from France's Beaujolais can be slightly chilled. They deliver vibrant flavors of strawberry, raspberry, cherry, and cranberry. Thanks to carbonic maceration—where fermentation begins inside the intact berry in an oxygen-free tank—you also may get banana, kirsch, or bubblegum. Usually light bodied with good acidity, low tannins, low alcohol, silky mouthfeel, refreshing. Another very versatile food pairing wine. Not all wines are well suited for spring. Wines to think twice about before opening:• Heavy, full-bodied reds. Grippy tannins and higher alcohol of cabernet sauvignon, syrah/shiraz, mourvèdre can make them awkward springtime wines.• Mass-market blends with residual sugar. With candied fruit flavors, thick, syrupy textures, and elevated alcohol they are not sprightly in spring. Or any season, some would argue.• Heavy-oaked chardonnays and viogniers. Butter and vanilla notes easily overpower spring's lighter fare. Save those for winter.Tasting notes:• Rabble Sauvignon Blanc, Central Coast 2022: Nuanced, balanced, impressive interplay of tartness and hint of sweetness with plenty of fruitiness. $18-21 Link to my review• Mendes & Symington Monção e Melgaço Contacto Alvarinho Vinho Verde DOC 2023: Bright, refreshing, great minerality, outstanding quality. $22-27 Link to my review• Maison Sainte Marguerite Symphonie Rosé, Côtes de Provence 2022: Elegant, refined, classic, harmonious Provence rosé. Finesse, freshness with minerality, bright acidity. $24-28 Link to my reviewLast roundA book fell on my head. I can only blame my shelf. Making Peace Visible
A nuanced conversation about USAID

When the Trump administration slashed the budget and suspended most of the staff of the United States Agency for International Development last month, their representatives said the agency was using taxpayer dollars to fund a radical, “woke” agenda around the world. Criticism coming from the Left since the founding of USAID in 1961 has characterized USAID as an arm of American imperialism. The reality, of course, is much more complicated. It's heartbreaking to hear stories of children suddenly unable to attend school and receive essential vaccinations. But beyond the shockwaves of a sudden halt in the flow of assistance, there's a lot about US foreign aid that's up for debate. Questions like what does it accomplish? Does it really help? How does it help? Should it continue? Or, should foreign aid be scaled down over time? Our host, Jamil Simon, has seen USAID projects succeed, and fall short – having worked for more than three decades as a USAID contractor, developing communication strategies to promote reform in more than 20 countries. Our guest, Gregory Warner is a Peabody Award - winning journalist who has reported on USAID on the ground in places including Sub-Saharan Africa, Ukraine and Afghanistan. He was the creator and host of NPR's international podcast Rough Translation. Before that, he was an international correspondent for NPR, based in East Africa. Warner has reported on USAID on the ground in Africa, as well as in Ukraine and Afghanistan. He writes the Substack blog Rough Transition.MORE FROM GREGORY WARNERSubscribe to get Rough Transition in your inbox. Read Warner's recent reporting about the gutting of USAID and what it says about the perception of America in the world. Listen to the Rough Translation episode about a woman who lied so she could receive aid designated for sexual violence survivors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Explore the Rough Translation podcast archive. CONNECT WITH USDo you have a story of your own about USAID? "The archetypal forces still speak through us."My beloved podcast family, welcome to another episode. My heart bursts open with love and excitement for the release of this gem of a conversation that went into the very depth of our existence and all the nuanced and subtle realms of the human experience. That is with my guest, Igor Kufayev. Igor is an artist, Advaita Tantra teacher and founder of the not-for-profit organisation Flowing Wakefulness. He has been serving as a conduit of transmission for awakening, towards the new era of heart-centred consciousness for over two decades. Born in Uzbekistan and classically trained in art from a young age, the one-time student of the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts enjoyed an international art career by his mid thirties living in London. After stumbling across his work on Instagram, I felt something drawing me into a conversation with this modern mystic and man of presence and integrity. There's something undeniably magnetic about Igor and I wanted to explore who lives behind the timeless wisdom of his sharings on social media and beyond. This is a deep one, folks. I gained entirely new perspectives on frequently discussed topics on the podcast such as surrender or masculinity. Igor has a very unique, eloquent and elegant way of observing and articulating his view on these topics and it has been nothing short of amazing and enriching to speak to him. I would love to hear what it does for you. Move well out there.

This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth, Manukora Honey, and Aqua Tru. Political and social discussions have become increasingly divisive today, often leaving little room for nuance or open dialogue. Differing viewpoints are frequently shut down, met with hostility, or dismissed outright, despite the fact that real growth comes from curiosity and engaging with opposing perspectives. Today's guest joins us to explore the courage it takes to question our beliefs, understand where they come from, and embrace complexity in a world that often demands rigid certainty. Today on The Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with cultural commentator Kaizen Asiedu to explore the importance of understanding our beliefs, where they come from, and the courage it takes to question them. Kaizen shares his personal journey of challenging lifelong beliefs and embracing alternative perspectives. He also discusses how this willingness to question ideas is often missing in today's political climate, where fear of dissent has led to tribalism and dehumanization. Additionally, he shares his insights on the MAHA movement, health and wellness discussions, and the concept of antifragility. Kaizen Asiedu is a cultural commentator dedicated to empowering people by simplifying complex political and social issues into messages that leave listeners informed and appreciative of nuance. After earning a philosophy degree from Harvard, he entered the gaming industry, ultimately becoming Head of Global Esports Events at Riot Games. While leading the League of Legends World Championship and winning an Emmy, he felt a growing restlessness—a desire for a deeper, more personal purpose. Today, he helps high achievers who feel burnt out or lost transition from unfulfilling careers to meaningful work, whether as entrepreneurs or in roles that excite them as much as playing their favorite game or reading a beloved book. In this episode, Dhru and Kaizen dive into: Recognizing that you are in the “Matrix” of living a life expected of you (00:00:25) The ideas Kaizen was called to question (2:50) Fear-based conditioning and morality (7:40) RFK's confirmation hearing and steelmanning concerns about his positions (20:20) The discouragement of open conversations and the rise of cancel culture (30:10) The rejection of humanity and the divisions it has caused (40:36) Red flags that indicate we are stuck in tribalism (44:36) Kaizen's views that diverge from the current administration (47:46) Kaizen's personal journey and the significance of "kaizen" in Japanese culture (54:16) The role of psychedelics, mindfulness, and shifting belief systems (58:56) Engaging with people as they are in the present moment (01:07:46) The intersection of lifestyle choices and systemic issues (01:14:46) Respecting alternative viewpoints, embracing different perspectives, and the concept of antifragility (01:19:16) Final thoughts (01:34:46) For more on Kaizen, follow him on Instagram, X/Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube. OG truth speaker and activist Bob Tuskin returns to Chant it down with a discussion about a variety of topics, but the overall theme boils down to, enjoying the nuance of life and shedding the perspective of being a die-hard truther. Of course it's good to know what's going on in the world, but we're meant to enjoy life and not just constantly focus on the bad things happening. We also need to get our inspirations in life from an eclectic variety of sources instead of just become a choir of voices that just see in a different black and white, then the sheeple black and white. Bob Tuskin is a great example of a seasoned and matured mind who knows what's going on, and has known what's going on, but seeks to fulfill life in a variety of nuance. I'm so excited to welcome back my dear friend and returning guest, Susan Guthrie, a leading family law attorney and mediator, for a robust conversation about the family court system. While family court often gets a bad rap (and yes, it needs reform), Susan and I dig into why it's not always terrible. There is good that can come from it too. Together, we're breaking down what you can expect if you navigate the family court process, how to prepare for it, and how to make decisions that truly serve you and your kids. We're also diving into the hot topic of no-fault divorce laws: Could they be repealed? And what would that mean for families going forward? What You'll Hear: Why family court is necessary and not always the “necessary evil” it's made out to be (7:09) What most people can expect from the family court system (12:50) How to prepare for your day in court, including what serves you and what doesn't (17:25) The likelihood of no-fault divorce laws being repealed and the potential implications (34:13) Learn more about Susan Guthrie: Susan Guthrie has been one of the leading family law attorneys and mediators in the country for more than 30 years and a world-wide expert in online mediation and she has trained over 20,000 professionals in the ethical and practical considerations in transitioning to a virtual practice. Nick Mott is an award-winning multimedia journalist who lives in Livingston, Montana. His latest project is a wonderful new podcast called The Wide Open, which he produced in collaboration with Montana Public Radio and the Montana Media Lab. The podcast offers a fresh look into our ever-changing relationship with the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and it digs into the history, nuance, and modern-day controversies surrounding what has been called “the most powerful environmental legislation in the world.” Nick explores this devisive topic with deep curiosity and journalistic integrity, and I found the podcast to be amazingly educational and entertaining– which is a rare combo when discussing such a complex piece of legislation. If you're a longtime Mountain & Prairie listener, then many of the topics Nick explores in The Wide Open will be of great interest– grizzly bears, wolves, the environmental history of the West, and more. You'll also hear a few familiar voices, including past podcast guest and living legend Doug Peacock. But what I most appreciated about The Wide Open is how Nick was able to humanize the stories surrounding such a divisive part of Western culture– he features people who love the ESA and people who hate it, but all of them are given the opportunity to share their stories and unique outlooks. In this current cultural moment of hot takes, outrage, and misinformation, The Wide Open is a much-needed return to nuance, curiosity, and civility. As you'd expect from an award-winning podcaster, Nick knows how to tell a great story, so I know you'll enjoy this episode. We start out discussing the history of the ESA and Nick's fresh approach to exploring such a well-known environmental story. We discuss how the ESA is used as a tool to achieve goals other than species protection, how Nick balances the need to make his podcasts both informative and fun to listen to, how he accounts for his own personal biases when telling stories, and how he goes about choosing people to interview. About halfway through the episode, Nick recounts a horrifying recent run-in he had with a grizzly bear, and he discusses how that close call affected his thinking on some of these complex wildlife issues. We also discuss his favorite books, plans for future seasons of The Wide Open, how he deals with negative feedback, wolf reintroduction in Colorado, his professional heroes, and much more. Be sure to check out the episode notes for links to everything, including Nick's other podcasts and his book "This is Wildfire," which he co-authored with Justin Angle.
