Welcome to the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast! In this compelling episode, Dr. Sarah Smith sits down with Dr. La Toya Luces-Sampson—known as Dr. Toya—to discuss her transformative journey through medicine, from her beginnings in Trinidad and Tobago to her training as an OB/GYN in the US, and ultimately her bold decision to step away from clinical practice. Dr. Toya candidly opens up about her experiences with burnout in residency and corporate medicine, the toll it took on her personal well-being, and the moments that sparked real change in her career and life. She shares how a leap into entrepreneurship during the COVID-19 pandemic rekindled her confidence and purpose beyond clinical work, eventually inspiring her to become a coach for physician moms navigating medicine and motherhood. Dr. Toya reveals practical tools she used for efficiency, like templates and support systems, and emphasizes the importance of advocacy, boundaries, and accepting support—whether at work or at home. Tune in for an honest, inspiring conversation about resilience, redefining success in medicine, and the power of community and self-compassion in building a sustainable clinical career. Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: Support Matters at Work and Home: Whether advocating for yourself in a tough clinical environment or building a support system at home, allowing yourself to be supported is crucial. As Dr. La Toya shared, “We have worked so hard to get where we are. Allow yourself to be supported.” Efficiency and Boundaries Fight Burnout: La Toya emphasized the power of systems, templates, and boundaries, both in patient care and personal life. Tackling the inbox right away, leveraging dictation and templates, and having clear work/home boundaries helped her stay efficient—and sane. Burnout Isn't the End—It's a Call to Innovate:Experiencing burnout multiple times gave Dr. La Toya new perspectives and fueled her pivot into entrepreneurship and coaching. She now empowers physician moms to carve their own pathways—inside or outside medicine: “They can stay in medicine if that's what they want. They can leave medicine if that's what they want. They can find their balance.” Dr. La Toya Luces-Sampson Bio: Dr. La Toya Luces-Sampson aka Dr. Toya, is a wife, mother, board-certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist, perinatal mental health specialist, and Coach. She helps Physician Moms thrive in medicine and motherhood without complete self-sacrifice. With over a decade of experience in women's health, Dr. Toya empowers physician moms through private and group coaching and her podcast, ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨ a space where physician moms can feel a little more seen and a lot less alone. -------------- Would you like to view a transcript of this episode? In this episode of OT Yourself to Freedom, Beki Eakins talks about burnout, frustration, and feeling stuck in the OT profession. If you're tired of endless admin, long meetings, and feeling like your work doesn't make a real impact, this is for you. Beki explores the allure of job security, the cost of staying in your comfort zone, and why discomfort is often a sign that it's time to make a change. She also shares her personal story of realising she had lost her passion and the pivotal moment that led her to create a business aligned with her purpose. Key Takeaways: Feeling stuck is a sign that something needs to change, it's not the end, it's a new beginning. Burnout happens when your values don't align with your work – if your job is draining you, it's time to rethink your next steps. Security is an illusion – a steady paycheck doesn't always mean stability or happiness. You don't need to see the full plan, just take the first step and the rest will unfold. Decluttering your commitments and setting boundaries makes space for your future business. Excuses like “I don't have time” keep OTs stuck The best way to create impact might not be within the traditional OT system . Incarcerated people work for penny wages, and, in several states, for nothing at all. Many of us outside of prisons rely on their labor in areas like repairing roads, fighting wildfires, or clearing debris after hurricanes. Prisoners manufacture products like office furniture, mattresses, license plates, dentures, glasses, traffic signs, garbage cans, athletic equipment, and uniforms. That's just a portion of the work that incarcerated workers make. On today's show, we talk to authors of a new book that explores these labor practices called Abolition Labor , which draws connections between the labor forced on prisoners who hustle to survive on the inside and our precarious economy on the outside. The book argues that, far from being quarantined from society, prisons and their forced work regime have a sizable impact on the economic and social lives of millions of American households. Our guests are two of the authors of that book, Andrew Ross and Tommaso Bardelli. Andrew Ross is a Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU, where he also directs the Prison Research Lab. Tommaso Bardelli is a Research Fellow at the NYU Prison Education Program Research Lab, where he conducts research on mass incarceration, financial debt, and their intersections. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Prison Labor and the Fight to End It w/ Andrew Ross & Tommaso Bardelli appeared first on KPFA.

Stand Up is a daily podcast. I book, host, edit, post and promote new episodes with brilliant guests every day. Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 700 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous souls A prominent advocate, speaker, author, and media commentator, Ryan Hampton travels coast-to-coast to add solutions to our national addiction and drug overdose crisis. In recovery from a decade-long opioid addiction, Hampton is regarded as a forefront expert and thought leader in America's rising addiction recovery advocacy & drug policy reform movements. An alumnus of the Clinton White House, he's worked with multiple non-profits and addiction recovery organizing campaigns. He's now a prominent, leading face and voice of recovery advocacy and is working to change the longstanding negative narratives about those impacted by addiction, recovery, and overdose. Through his books and media, organizing campaigns, and social content that reaches millions, Ryan breaks down cultural barriers that have kept people suffering in silence and is helping to inspire a new generation of advocates recovering out loud, pushing for common-sense policy. He was part of the core team that released the first-ever U.S. Surgeon General's report on alcohol, drugs, and health in 2016 and was singled out by Forbes the following year as a top social entrepreneur in the recovery movement. Ryan connects a vast network of people passionate about ending the overdose crisis in America. He has been featured by—and is a contributor to—media outlets such as the Today Show, the Associated Press, USA Today, MSNBC, ABC News, Fox and Friends, the New York Times, NPR, HLN, Vice, Slate, The Hill, the Wall Street Journal, and others. Ryan has received praise from Democrats and Republicans alike for addressing addiction as a trans-political issue—crossing the political spectrum to build an inclusive coalition focused on solutions. He works closely with the White House, Senate Democrats, Republicans, U.S. House leadership, and state legislatures across the country. Notably, he helped craft binding provisions addressing substance use disorder in the historic SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, signed into federal law in October 2018. In 2016, he created the web series Addiction Across America, documenting his 30-day, 28-state, 8,000-mile cross-country trip visiting areas hit hardest by the addiction crisis. His first bestselling book, “American Fix — Inside the Opioid Addiction Crisis and How to End It,” was released by St. Martin's Press in August 2018. His second book, “Unsettled: How the Purdue Pharma Bankruptcy Failed the Victims of the American Overdose Crisis,” was released in September 2021 and chronicled his behind-the-scenes efforts representing tens of thousands of victims in the Purdue Pharma opioid settlement litigation. Ryan is currently working on his third book, scheduled to be released in 2024. In 2019, Ryan was named by Facebook as an inaugural community leadership fellow and created the national advocacy initiative, Mobilize Recovery. Since its inception, Mobilize Recovery has recruited and trained over 8,000 new advocates from all 50 states focused on community-based solutions to end the addiction and overdose crisis. In 2022, Mobilize Recovery traveled to 25 states, hosting 35 organizing and advocacy training events throughout September and October, distributing 10,000 doses of free naloxone and over 11,000 fentanyl test strips. Through the Overdose Response Initiative, a not-for-profit coalition Ryan helped to form in 2019, over 625,000 free doses of naloxone have been distributed in 21 states as of December 2022. The alliance comprises nearly 40 organizational stakeholders nationally, including Direct Relief International, the Clinton Foundation, and Mobilize Recovery. He lives in Nevada with his husband, Sean, and their boxer puppy, Quincy. The Stand Up Community Chat is always active with other Stand Up Subscribers on the Discord Platform. Trending with Timmerie - Catholic Principals applied to today's experiences.
Did you catch the latest buzz around the film It Ends With Us? Whether you've read the book or not, there's a lot more beneath the surface than just another romance flick. Directed by Justin Baldoni and starring Blake Lively, this movie looks into the gritty reality of domestic violence—a subject that hits close to home for many. The film is not suitable for sensitive eyes. A Controversial Take on a Serious Issue The film has stirred up quite the controversy. Some moviegoers were caught off guard by the heavy themes of abuse, especially since the marketing leaned more on the romantic angle. This led to a lot of backlash, with many feeling "triggered" by the film's portrayal of domestic violence. However, Justin Baldoni took a different route, choosing not to join the red carpet frenzy. Instead, he emphasized that this film is for the women who have suffered from domestic violence, making it clear that the message is what matters most. Breaking the Cycle of Abuse The movie and the book it's based on explore the heartbreaking challenge of recognizing and escaping from an abusive relationship. For many women, the courage to leave often comes when they have someone else to protect—like a child. But it's not just about bravery; it's about the tangled web of emotional and chemical bonds that make it so difficult to walk away. The Catholic Perspective: Why This Matters There's often a deeper root to the problems we face in our culture. Timmerie reminds us that our culture today has distorted the purpose of intimacy, taking it out of the sacred context of marriage. This distortion leads to confusion, making it harder for women to see their partners for who they truly are. In this society, we've lost sight of the value of real, committed love—the kind that is nurtured within marriage. Saving sex for marriage isn't just a rule; it's a safeguard. It's about truly knowing and loving someone before making that deep connection, which in turn helps us avoid the traps of unhealthy relationships. Moving Forward with Hope It Ends With Us is a reminder that the cycle of abuse can be broken. It's a call to seek relationships built on love, respect, and the teachings of our faith. And if you're facing such struggles, remember that help is available. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 800-799-SAFE. Let's End It with Us. Be sure to pray for those who feel like there's no way out of an abusive relationship. By living out our faith in every aspect of our relationships, we can contribute to ending domestic violence and fostering true love. Let's make sure It Ends With Us.

Introduction: In this episode, Susie Gurley welcomes Brenda and Faith Ferber to the podcast. Together, they embark on a deeply personal journey, exploring mental health, resilience, and the power of open communication. Brenda, the author of the impactful article 'My Daughter Told Me She Wanted to Die to Save Her Life I Gave Her Permission to End It,' shares her experiences and the challenges she faced to get her story published. Alongside her is Faith, who bravely shares her early struggles with mental health, self-discovery, and a path toward recovery. The Article That Made a Difference: Brenda discusses the title of her article, "My Daughter Told Me She Wanted to Die I Gave Her Permission to End It," and how it drew attention. Brenda explains her struggle to get the article published and the importance of sharing stories about mental health. The article resonated with numerous readers who were also dealing with similar challenges but not openly discussing them. Faith's Early Mental Health Journey: Faith shares her early experiences with mental health challenges, beginning as early as kindergarten. Her separation from her twin brother in kindergarten triggered feelings of abandonment and a belief that she was simultaneously "too much and not enough." Faith describes her first expression of suicidal thoughts at the age of nine. Middle School Challenges: Faith's mental health struggles intensified during middle school, leading to self-harm and a need for validation. She discusses how sexting and self-harm were intertwined and her mother, Brenda's, response to her behavior. Brenda recalls her perspective as a parent during these challenging times, experiencing shame and confusion. Friendship and Betrayal: Faith opens up about her friendship with a group of girls who also engaged in self-harm. After Faith's mother alerted their parents about their self-harming, the girls turned against Faith, and her friends stopped speaking to her. Faith recounts the social isolation and betrayal she felt in the aftermath of her mother's actions. Seeking Help: Brenda and Faith discuss the critical importance of communication between parents and children regarding mental health. Brenda shares the moment she discovered Faith's self-harming and the supportive approach she took. Faith emphasizes the significance of open communication and her mother's positive response. The Path to Recovery: Faith and Brenda reflect on Faith's journey toward recovery. Brenda acknowledges that understanding the role of mental illness was challenging at times. They emphasize the importance of not dealing with these challenges alone and building a support network. Context Setting:The conversation continues between Faith Ferber, Brenda, and Susie Gurley as they delve into their experiences with Faith's struggles and Brenda's emotional journey.Faith's Eighth Grade Experience: Faith discusses how her life in eighth grade took a significant toll on her mental health. Her distress reached a point where she contemplated suicide. She opens up about her hospitalization for suicidal ideation during this time, though it didn't eliminate her suicidal thoughts. Turning Point in Hawaii:Faith's parents sent her to an outdoor behavioral health program in Hawaii, where she lived on an organic farm. This experience was transformative for her as she learned to care for the land, plants, and, in turn, herself. It marked the first time she felt she had some worth and could imagine loving and valuing herself.Enrolling in a Boarding School:Faith shares how she decided to attend an all-girls boarding school in Connecticut, seeking a fresh start. The school offered a required class on social justice, which ignited Faith's passion for activism.Coming Out as Gay:At 16, Faith came out as gay while attending the boarding school. She noticed that the school had different rules for gay and straight students, leading her to confront the issue and fight for equal treatment.Challenges and Rule Breaking: Faith's frustration with the school's rules led her to break a major school rule related to sexual activity. This incident made her feel like she was making her life worse. A further misstep, involving an older girl, who was in college, and Faith's attempt to stay at her house after texting her advisor about feeling suicidal, led to drastic consequences. Psychiatric Hospitalization:Faith's text about feeling suicidal triggered a response that resulted in her being sent to a psychiatric hospital. Her mother, Brenda, had to fly to Connecticut to pick her up, and Faith was dismissed from the school due to liability concerns.Return to an Unchanged Environment:Faith returned to the same community she had left in eighth grade, where people had not changed, and she felt like she was still the same person from eighth grade. This intensified her depression and suicidal thoughts.Conversations about Suicide:Brenda shares the pivotal moment when Faith told her that she wanted to die by suicide. Brenda recounts their emotional conversation and how it ultimately led to an agreement that, if all else failed, Faith could choose that path. She discusses how this revelation was like a wake-up call for her.Safety Measures:Brenda mentions that if a gun were present in their house, it would have been an unsafe conversation to have. She emphasizes the importance of keeping a gun out of a household with a mentally ill person.Faith's Perspective:Faith admits that, at the time, the validation she received from her mother didn't make her feel hopeful that things would get better. Instead, it felt like a ticket out that allowed her to contemplate different treatments.Exploring Crisis Management:Susie Gurley and Brenda delve into a critical topic: how to approach conversations with a loved one who might be contemplating suicide. Brenda shares insights on how her perspective has evolved and what she wishes she knew back then. The Conversation You Wish You Had:Brenda reveals that if she could go back in time to when Faith was struggling, she would have asked her point-blank questions about her suicidal thoughts, plans, and means of carrying them out. The goal would be to engage in open, non-judgmental dialogue to assess the level of risk and create a safety plan.Addressing the Stigma:The conversation highlights the stigma surrounding suicide and mental illness, which can make it difficult for people to discuss the topic openly. Faith emphasizes that asking someone if they're thinking about suicide does not increase the risk; it's essential to engage in these conversations.Changing the Narrative:Brenda emphasizes the need to change the stigma surrounding mental illness. She notes how people often question why something like this happens to families like hers, as if mental illness has selective criteria.Different Approaches to Treatment: Faith shares that after her conversation with her mother, they tried various treatments. A new medication, which led to a bipolar diagnosis, was helpful. However, the most transformative experience was energy healing, conducted remotely over the phone with an energy healer named Cheryl. Faith recounts the session where Cheryl conducted a soul retrieval journey for her and explains how it felt like a game-changing moment in her healing journey. Positive Outcomes:Faith describes how the energy healing session had an immediate impact on her well-being. She initially thought the effects might be temporary, but her improved mental health persisted for days, weeks, and months.Faith's Journey and Mental Health: Faith Ferber shares her experience with bipolar disorder and the continuous care and attention required for mental health. Managing her mental illness has become easier with medication.

End It!-S05E10”https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jun/23/i-am-kinky-but-my-partner-is-not-should-i-end-our-secure-loving-relationship“Every relationship involves sacrifices, writes advice columnist Eleanor Gordon-Smith. But yours might not be as fulfilling as you think – for either partyTalk about Stephen Ing's “Your magic sex number” and personal experiences to intro the topic.“I am kinky but my partner is not. Should I end our secure, loving relationship?” by Eleanor Gordon-Smith Thu 22 Jun 2023I have been in a loving relationship for three years. When I first met him, I told a close friend that I thought I'd met the love of my life. That initial infatuation gave way to a more realistic affection, but he's smart, handsome and caring. I enjoy our time together and feel secure and trusting.Sexually, things were enjoyable at the beginning. That calmed down into a less frantic dynamic but we still have sex once per week.I am kinky and he is not. We have discussed this and he doesn't feel comfortable doing the things that I enjoy.Initially, I thought this would be OK – relationships always have compromise – but as time has gone on I am not sure it is something I can forgo. He has made clear that an open relationship would not be acceptable to him.I have an anonymous online profile on a kink dating site. I started talking with someone who shared my interests. We met, and the sexual encounter was satisfying to a level I have never experienced before. We have continued to meet on a weekly basis for six months. Neither party knows about the other.I do not want to end my relationship, but I cannot live without this aspect of my sexuality. I feel guilt about being unfaithful but exploring in this way has enabled me to stay in the relationship.Should I leave my partner because of the gap between our sexual tastes? Should I give up my kink desires for what is otherwise a relationship I would have no reason to leave? My boyfriend's aggressive dog has stalled our plans to move in together. How can we move forward?Eleanor says: Listen, it's fine to feel that this part of your sexuality is something you can't live without. It's also fine to decide that a relationship isn't going to work because of that. We get to leave relationships when staying would mean being bereft over missing out on something. That doesn't get less true just because the thing in question is sexual. You could leave if you wanted kids and your partner didn't; if you wanted to live in a particular country and your partner didn't. Continuing a relationship isn't just a question of whether you like this person, it's a question of whether your lives can really dovetail. But what's never going to be fine is continually deceiving your partner into staying in a relationship that isn't the way they think it is or the way they want it to be. You say your partner has been clear that he wouldn't be alright with an open relationship. Unbeknown to him, though, he's already been in one, and continuing these meetups is continuing to keep him in an arrangement you know he wouldn't be OK with.Your partner will be making sacrifices to be in this relationship. They might differ from the sacrifices you make in their content and exact contours, but all of us change our lives and reorder our priorities to be in a relationship. So far as I can tell, you're accepting this person's sacrifices – monogamy, commitment, support, cooperation, friendship. He's making considerable alterations to his life in order to have a certain kind of relationship with you, which, in fact, he isn't getting. It is not deviant or selfish to decide that you have to have this part of yourself satisfied. For many of us, sexuality isn't an optional extra to a life well-lived, it's just as crucial an ingredient in wellbeing as friends or exercise or time with family. The fact that it's called “kink” and gets relegated to the sidelines of subculture doesn't mean you have to relegate it to the sidelines of your life. But it's just never going to be the case that the best thing to do would be to carry on deceiving someone who you respect. Quite aside from the obvious unfairness, it also won't get you what you want – not really. You want to feel electric. You don't want to keep this part of yourself separate from the rest of your life forever, so that it's always wrapped up with splintering; with concealment. You said that, this aside, you'd have no reason to leave. As I see it, though, you do have a reason to leave: the fact that if you stay, you'll be deciding your partner should remain in a relationship of significant deceit instead of finding someone whose preferences about sex and monogamy really do align with his. Whether to end this relationship isn't just a question of, as you put it, what you want.”Important Links:Full show notes: https://kuldrinskrypt.com/510National Suicide Hotline: 1-800-273-8255NCSF Kink Aware Professionals: https://www.kapprofessionals.orghttps://kuldrinskrypt.com/silentcommunicationhttps://KuldrinsKrypt.com/surveyhttps://kuldrinskrypt.com/TeePublicShow Producers (Updated April 15, 2023):Become a show producer: https://KuldrinsKrypt.com/Patreon Make a one-time donation: https://KuldrinsKrypt.com/PayPal Snail mail a donation or gift:Kuldrin Entertainment, LLC257 N.
