Described as ‘the first lady of Irish cycling', Dervla Murphy was renowned for her intrepid spirit, and she remained passionate about travel, writing, politics, conservation and bicycling until her death in 2022. In this episode of the Slightly Foxed podcast we have gathered a number of those who knew and worked with Dervla to discuss the life and work of this extraordinary travel writer. Gail Pirkis and Steph Allen, from Slightly Foxed, worked with Dervla during their time at John Murray Publishers. Rose Baring was her editor at Eland Books and Ethel Crowley was a friend and editor of the recent anthology, Life at Full Tilt: The Selected Writings of Dervla Murphy. Together with our host Rosie Goldsmith they discuss Dervla's early years and inspiration, consider the experience of publishing her work and examine her place in the Ireland of her time. Born in Lismore, Ireland, in 1931, Dervla lived there until the end of her life. She was an only child and her parents, who originated from Dublin, encouraged her independence and love of books. Her father – who later became the much-loved Waterford County Librarian ‒ had been involved in the Irish republican movement and had served time in Wormwood Scrubs prison for his activities. Dervla spent her childhood caring for her mother who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, and then left school at 14 to care for her full-time. When her parents died in 1962 Dervla, at the age of 30, found herself free to travel. She acquired a bicycle and set out on a journey to Istanbul, through Iran and on to India during one of the worst winters in recent memory. This would become the subject of her first, and most famous book, Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle, published in 1965. There followed numerous voyages with her trusty steed and 25 more books, including her highly acclaimed autobiography Wheels within Wheels. She won worldwide praise for her writing and many awards, including the Edward Stanford Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Travel Writing and a Royal Geographical Society Award. Dervla took huge risks, mostly travelling alone and in famously austere style, whether in far-flung Limpopo, the Andes, Gaza or closer to home, where she documented the worst of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Battling injury and political circumstance, she immersed herself in the lives of ordinary people caught in the shifting tides of power that dictated the terms on which they lived. To these people, she listened. What resulted was some of the most astute and compelling travel writing of the twentieth century. As the table choose their favourite book of Dervla's, we also have our usual round-up of current reading, including the latest mystery from Kate Atkinson, Death at the Sign of the Rook, the Booker Prize-nominated The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng, and Jon Dunn's monograph on the hummingbird, The Glitter in the Green. For episode show notes, please see the Slightly Foxed website. Opening music: Preludio from Violin Partita No. 3 in E Major by Bach Hosted by Rosie Goldsmith Produced by Philippa Goodrich

Welcome to the Sonic Collective, a music podcast that explores a different album or musical concept each month, diving deep into its history, context, and impact on the music industry. Join hosts Alain DuPuis, Scott Coates and Darren Scott, along with Scott Gregory, as they share their thoughts, insights, and personal connections to the music, inviting listeners to discover new perspectives and appreciation for some of the greatest albums of all time. Darren Scott reminisces about compilation albums and the group's original rule against reviewing compilations or best-of albums, but acknowledges exceptions. The podcast delves into the history of compilation albums, particularly those from K-Tel Records, founded in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1962 by Philip Kives. Kives became renowned for compilation albums featuring diverse hits across various genres. He started the infomercial craze in 1962 and applied direct marketing to music, leading to the popularity of compilation albums in the 70s and 80s. Darren shares his memories of compilation albums from his childhood, particularly the album "Full Tilt," a Canadian release with a U.S. version that differed significantly. He explains the Canadian content law that required a percentage of music played on the radio to be Canadian, which helped the Canadian music industry grow. The members discuss their experiences with compilation albums, highlighting the diversity of genres and artists featured. They mention standout tracks like Diana Ross's "Upside Down," Kenny Loggins's "I'm All Right," and the Irish Rovers' "Wasn't That a Party." They also touch on the influence of British culture on Canadian music and the eclectic mix of songs on the album. The podcast concludes with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of compilation albums, their nostalgic value, and their role as time capsules of popular music. The hosts share their ratings for the album "Full Tilt" and introduce the next album for review, "Hit Express."
Skid Row entered the scene at a cross roads of rock and grunge. Touring with both sides of the fence, they went through a journey on this album from a more polished glam metal sound to something harder. Did it work? The guys get together and give their takes on what they thought of the album and the musical happenings of the time that might have influenced it's fate. Could the band put out something solid in the face of changing musical tastes? Stay tuned at the end when Darren reveals his pick for next month where we explore a new theme for a round: favourite compilation album. Find out some initial thoughts on why he picked 1981's Full Tilt by K-Tel records.

Ever wonder what poker's iconic voice, Norman Chad, really thinks about the biggest controversies shaking the game? Well, I sat down with the legend himself to unravel exactly that. Norman, famed for his razor-sharp wit and signature humor, opens up about the shadowy corners of poker, including his brutally honest take on online poker scandals, the fine line between justice and vengeance, and why integrity in the game is not just crucial—it's absolutely necessary.Norman shares some deeply personal stories and reveals his own struggles with morality at the poker table, including a confession he's carried for years: "Taking justice into my own hands—I've regretted it ever since." We dive into ghosting, Full Tilt, and edge-sorting—discussing how easy it is to flirt with ethical lines, and why the poker community urgently needs its own "untouchables" to uphold integrity. But it's not all doom and gloom. We also explore how poker can become more than just winning or losing—how the game, at its core, has the power to shape character, teach critical life lessons, and potentially even serve a greater good. Norman's insights and brutal honesty are not just entertaining—they're vital. Tune in, and let's shine a little light into poker's murky depths.

This week on America's Podcast, we're turning up the volume and cranking the stereo to eleven with our special guest, the one and only Eric Lussier! He's here to dissect the new House of Lords album “Full Tilt Overdrive.” Is it a banger that will make you want to do the cha-cha or a fizzler that leaves you feeling as flat as a soda left open at a family reunion? No spoilers, but let's just say we've got more suspense than a cat watching a laser pointer! In our Tracks of the Week, we've got a lineup that's tastier than a five-course meal at a fancy restaurant! Marc is digging into “Kitty” by The Presidents of The United States, which we can only hope has nothing to do with actual cats in suits. Mooger is vibing to “Ghost” by D.A.D., reminding us all that sometimes you need a little spooky in your rock repertoire. Eric's choice, “Ignite The Fire” by Becoming Wolves, might just have you wondering if you're more wolf or more sheep when you hear it. And we wrap it all up with Jerry's pick, “Grove Street” by Florence Black, which we can only assume is about a really cool neighborhood or alternatively, an epic debate club. So until next week, folks, let's play some pinball, crank up that rock music, and have a cocktail—or three! Who knows, maybe the combination will lead to a harmonious musical experience or at least some really funny dance moves! Cheers!

Jessica Christensen, Mixologist and Beverage Manager, and Robb Stites, head of Communications and Community at Graton Resort and Casino join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Jessica is a Sonoma County native. She is responsible for all of the drinks at nine different bars at the Graton Resort and Casino. She started as a bartender at Negri's in Occidental when she was 21. After a few years she worked at Calistoga Inn and Brewery. After that, she was recruited to the Graton casino and soon got into management there. The first drink served today, after the soothing and inspiring sound of the cocktail shaker, is an Apricot Pisco cocktail. Pisco is a distilled spirit from Peru with a flavor that is close to rum. Robb Stites had a background in public relations before coming to the casino about two years ago. He describes the philanthropy and in-kind donations that they do as an expression of their commitment to the community. Jessica describes the Apricot Pisco cocktail that is in Steve's glass. It is made with Pisco, Luxardo apricot liqueur, fresh lemon, some acqua fava for the foam and some simple syrup. Acqua fava is technically garbano bean juice, which can produce a foamy texture. (Sometimes bartenders use egg whites for foam, but many people prefer this vegan alternative.) Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! Fresh pizza dough made from scratch daily, la pizza è deliziosa! There are several bars in the resort; G-Bar is a sports bar and Sky Bar in the lobby has won several polls from Casino Player magazine. Sky Bar is a lounge bar at the center of the venue, Lobby Bar is a little more for craft cocktails, away from the gaming floor. There are also frequent concerts and comedy shows. The swimming pool is open not only to hotel guests now. You can buy day passes now for a cabaña, a lounger or a day bed, those are available seven days a week. Guests can bring food in from another restaurant or order from the poolside menu. The pool bar is right nearby. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. The next cocktail they taste is a new take on a traditional recipe, called a Jalapeño Margarita. It will soon be on the Lobby Bar menu. It has Jalapeño-infused tequila, plus Cointreau, lime juice and agave. Floating on top, there is an Aperol and lime citrus foam. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Jessica describes the pool menu, which is the same as last year and is designed to be quick, fresh and delicious. Kiwi, blueberry, watermelon, mango and spiked lemonade. They also have a cocktail competition called Full Tilt. The first year the competitors were mostly from north bay but this year they will open it to bartenders from all over the Bay Area. One portion of the competition will be Iron Chef style, where the competitors get a set of ingredients they have to work with. This year it will focus on agave-based drinks. The Campari group is the sponsor.

It took less than four years from Jesse Lonis to climb from $200 tournaments to competing in high rollers with the best players in the world. The New York native kickstarted his career with a World Poker Tour final table in 2021 at the Lucky Hearts Poker Open and then followed it up with a deep run in the WSOP main event, taking 25th place overall. In 2022, the former construction worker won a bracelet in the WSOP Online series, and nearly added a second that summer while also making two final tables at the WPT World Championship series. But the 28 year old has put together his best year in 2023. In January he finished third in the $25,000 high roller at the Hard Rock in South Florida for $260,000 and then added another $370,000 with a win at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. This summer, he made a last-minute decisino to play in the $50,000 pot-limit Omaha championship and broke through for his second bracelet and a massive payday of $2.3 million. He now has $6 million in career earnings.Highlights from this interview include new births, being the Lonfellow Deeds of his hometown, watching grandma play Full Tilt, working construction "like a dog in a cage," following in Gilly's footsteps, a long and brutal stay at Circus Circus, being an old school player, ging broke and coming back, where he keeps the bracelets, jumping into a $50k event, big sports bets, J-Lo, CCR, and bird presentations.

Building on a decade of gerrymandering and voter suppression within a structurally undemocratic American system that has helped Republicans create minority rule in many places and unearned super-majorities in others, they have now turned to simply ejecting their elected political opponents from fully representing their constituents.
