Its an absolute honour to welcome to the podcast founding member of arguably the biggest Australian rock band in the early 90's, and one of my all time favourite bands, Guitarist Dave Leslie. (The first album I ever bought was Baby Animals). Dave was born in Sydney Australia, he learnt guitar at the early age before playing in some local bands. He formed the Cold Chisel tribute band Swing Shift and gained a large following. After trying out for Rose Tattoo, he was later asked to try out for a new band with Suzi DeMarchi on vocals. Soon after they formed Baby Animals and brought out their debut self titled album. The album went x4 Platinum and went Number 1 in the ARIA Charts. The band won 3 ARIA Awards- Best Debut Single "Early Warning" , Best Debut Album, Best Break Through Band. The band toured the world with Bryan Adams, Van Halen and Robert Plant. Baby Animals broke up in 1996 and Dave then played guitar for Australian Rock Icons- Jimmy Barnes and Richard Clapton. The band reformed in 2007 to the high anticipated reunion tour. Baby Animals continue to perform live and record new albums. Dave's also plays in Truck. @daveleslie64 @babyanimalsmusic www.daveleslie.com.au https://tellcraigyourstory.podbean.com https://www.linktr.ee/tellcraigyourstory @tellcraigyourstory Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcCr6P3Ja395SkapnECvOFw?view_as=subscriber #daveleslie #tellcraigyourstory #babyanimals #swignshift #truck #rawbrit #guitarist #suzidemarchi #vanhalen #edwardvanhalen #bryanadams #robertplant #jimmybarnes #coldchisel #richardclapton #grinspoon #rosetattoo #screamingjets #theangels #extreme #inxs #davidletterman #shavedanddangerous #ariaawardwinners #mikechapman #nunobettencort #thisisnottheend #mtv #morecowbell

Join Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicians.Today I share a zoom room chat I had recently with founding member, songwriter and guitarist of The Baby Animals, Dave Leslie.Baby animals were hot as from 1989 to 1996 winning three Arias in 1992 including Album of the Year, Breakthrough Artist and Breakthrough Single for Early Warning. The reunited line-up includes original members Suze DeMarchi on vocals and guitar, Dave Leslie on on guitar and new band mates Dario Bortolin on Bass and Mick Skelton on Drums. They've toured with international acts Bryan Adams, Black Crowes, Van Helen, Robert Plant and supported Aussie bands including The Angels, Jimmy Barnes, Hoodoo Gurus and Hunters & Collectors. They are Australian Rock Royalty and Prince Dave is also playing for his new band Truck.Includes Songs:Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs - Be Bop A Lula The Angels - One WordThe Baby Animals - MarseillesTruck - Unconventionally RisingJimmy Barnes featuring The Baby Animals - Time Will TellSupertramp - Crime of the Century The Baby Animals - TonightThe Baby Animals - Early WarningWhat is Dave Leslie from The Baby Animals been up to at the moment? Let's find out .....
There is definitely something special about Australian rock.No matter how many bands around the world try to emulate that spirit, few actually get close to the sound that has shaped a nation. What many people outside of this country can't comprehend is that Aussie rock can't be just learnt or played. It has to exist inside you, gnawing away at your bones until it reaches the surface and manifests itself into something much more.Bands like Rose Tattoo, The Poor and the Screaming Jets have that rock swagger in abundance but most of the new or emerging generation can't quite seem to grasp the concept. So, then, it is refreshing and exciting when a new band comes on the scene that taps straight into that invisible well of talent and moves backwards to go forwards on a musical plain.Usually – as is the case with Truck – the band members have some pedigree in the old school of rock, for this is something difficult to learn and even harder to master. With an engine room that involves Baby Animals guitarist Dave Leslie and the vocal prowess of Andy McLean from Horsehead there was never any doubt what trajectory Truck's music would follow. It is exactly what you would expect.Pure Aussie rock. Front to back. Side to side. In and out. After releasing their third single in eight months, the raw and rock drenched number Unconventionally Rising, Truck drove straight out to the highway for a string of shows with Baby Animals and Rose Tattoo, proving the old adage that music is in the blood. Yes, it can be taught, but lessons can only ever teach you so much.HEAVY caught up with Dave for a chat and to find out how he has managed to keep the rock flame burning successfully for so long."This is kind of the stuff we grew up on, you know,” he agreed. “As far as that aesthetic goes, we wanted to be old school, heavy like Deep Purple and the Faces, that sort of thing. Just unapologetically classic rock. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel or anything like that, but we definitely wear our influences on our sleeves."While I have him on a roll, I ask Dave what it is that he thinks defines the spirit of Aussie rock."I think Angry Anderson put it well one time when he said no-one attacks a guitar like an Australian,” he laughed. “There's a certain sort of... you play from the front foot, you know what I mean? It's like there's a bit of a kill aspect going, and we have that as well. One time we supported Rose Tattoo down here in Melbourne and they did their soundcheck then we jumped up and they let us use their drum kit and everything like that, and all the foldback levels were set from where their sound check was, and man, it was the loudest gig we have ever played. The crew were like phwar. There was guitar screaming at me through wedges and I thought wow, this is so loud, and the crew were saying do you want us to turn it down and we said no, no (laughs). It was blistering, but we had a really good night that night as a result of that."In the full interview, Dave talks about finding like minded musicians to play in Truck with, the new single Unconventionally Rising, their limited edition physical EP, plans to extend that into an album, being on the road with Rose Tattoo and Baby Animals, playing two shows some nights with different bands and how he focusses, their upcoming single launch party at Melbourne's Cherry Bar and more. Interview intro track: AUDIO REIGN 'My Betrayal'
Guitarist Dave Leslie is one of the most respected musicians in Australian rock. And for good reason.Best known for being part of one of this countries finest rock exports in Baby Animals, Leslie has recently also started another project with Andy McLean of Horsehead fame called Truck, who are on the cusp of releasing their second single Lucky. With both bands now fully fledged touring outfits, Leslie has his hands full with a large number of upcoming shows, most notable of which is the Fistful Of Rock concerts which see Baby Animals share the stage with fellow Aussie legends The Angels, The Poor and Rose Tattoo.Leslie joined HEAVY for a chat earlier this week to discuss his active schedule, starting with the Fistful Of Rock."It is a hell of a lineup isn't it?” he smiled. “It's funny because we've been given a chance to bring our rock to the table, because it's a funny band Baby Animals. We can play in a lot of different circumstances and every time we play with other bands a little bit of that band rubs off on us. I know back in the early days when we toured with The Angels a lot of that rubbed off on us and we became... I guess we became harder because we had no choice. When you've got a girl singer and playing in front of an Angels crowd you've gotta bring it. or else they just bury you (laughs). We're looking forward to bringing it at Eatons Hill."When I point out to Leslie that the combined total of all four bands experience numbers a phenomenal 163 he doesn't seem surprised."That would be right,” he nodded. “It'll be good to see Angry again. I've spent a bit of time with him over the years because he's taken myself and the boys out shooting and bits and pieces, and he's such a nice fella. I'm really looking forward to the music side of things, but also the catch up. It's bloody hard to catch up with people sometimes, especially the last couple of years, so I'm looking forward to that social aspect of it too."In the full interview, Dave talks about the longevity of these bands and muses over which one will be the last band standing, his memories of playing with all three over the years, why he thinks Aussie rock bands never seem to get old or fade, potential new music from Baby Animals, Truck's new single Lucky and what we can expect, future music releases from the band, upcoming live shows, finding the balance between playing in multiple bands and more.
In our August 2018 interview, Dave Leslie (Baby Animals) shared a multitude of fantastic on and off-stage stories about touring with Van Halen. Dave Leslie of Baby Animals returns to join Eric in conversation to take a track by track look back at the 1993 Shaved and Dangerous, the follow-up to their wildly successful 1991 self-titled debut album. Recorded once again at Bearsville Studios in New York and at Compass Point in The Bahamas, the Shaved and Dangerous album was produced by Ed Stasium with a few songs produced by Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt. This would mark the first time the band worked with Nuno, which we get into. This album didn't perform as well commercially, the band went through some struggles creatively with the label, and eventually on the road. Litigation followed and the band dissolved shortly thereafter. They've since returned with a new studio album, an unplugged album, a live album, a greatest hits, new tracks, tours and much more. But this marked the end of their initial run for all intents and purposes. Having said that, it's a FANTASTICALLY creative album with some truly stellar tracks and performances by all members of the band, which we get in to. If you're familiar with Baby Animals, you'll enjoy this in-depth discussion of this classic record. If you're new to the band, hopefully you'll listen and discover some truly incredible songs for an under-recognized band.
This Week for the 50th Episode of the Art Of Touring, Siz Dog sits down with Guitar Player for the Baby Animals Dave Leslie! Art Of Touring is brought to you this week by Austin Powers Swinging School Of Pick Up Lines!
Dave Leslie is about to conduct his first ever guitar clinic extravaganza and he wants you to know about it!
Dave Leslie of Baby Animals joins Eric in conversation to take a track by track look back at their self-titled 1991 debut album. Recorded at Bearsville Studios in New York, the Baby Animals album was produced by Mike Chapman, it went eight times platinum in Australia, spawned five highly charting radio friendly rock hits (Rush You, One Word, Ain't Gonna Get, Early Warning, and Painless), won tons of ARIA awards and various accolades and sat as the highest selling Australian debut rock album for well over a decade. In the United States, their single Painless was picked up by MTV and put into heavy rotation, they appeared on Late Night With David Letterman, and toured the country opening for Van Halen. Unfortunately, a faltering record label and distance would prove to be major obstacles for growing success in the United States unfortunately. If you're familiar with Baby Animals, you'll enjoy this in-depth discussion of their legendary debut. If you're new to the band, hopefully you'll listen and discover a truly solid rock album from 1991 that you may have missed the first time around.
