Before the name Angry Anderson was etched into the annals of Australian rock music history, before the explosive energy of Rose Tattoo dominated stages, and before the emotional hit single “Suddenly” melted hearts across the world, there was just a working-class kid from Melbourne with a lot of grit and one hell of a voice.Born Gary Stephen Anderson in 1947, in Melbourne, Angry's early years were shaped by a rough-and-tumble environment that would later fuel his gritty, growling vocal style and hard-edged lyrics. Growing up in a tough household and navigating the chaos of suburban Australia during the 50s and 60s, Angry developed a rebellious spirit early on. He wasn't just angry in name—it was an energy, a rawness, a defiance that became his brand.Angry's first brush with the music world came in the late 60s when he joined the psychedelic band Peace Power and Purity, but it wasn't long before he migrated toward something heavier, something louder, something that matched the fury he carried inside. He soon found himself fronting the Buster Brown band—a raw, blues-rock outfit that blended searing guitar riffs with Angry's sandpaper vocals.Buster Brown became known in the Australian pub rock circuit, with Anderson's stage presence quickly earning him a reputation as a firecracker performer who gave everything on stage. In 76, Angry joined a new band called Rose Tattoo. It was ferocious and unapologetically Aussie. Rose Tattoo wasn't just a rock band. They were a statement. With their bald heads, tattooed bodies, and denim-stained bravado, they embodied working-class rebellion, pub rock pride, and that dangerous edge of Aussie outlaw culture. Their debut self-titled album in 78, featuring hits like “Bad Boy for Love” and “Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw,” exploded onto the Australian charts and gained attention in Europe.Rose Tattoo were frequent support acts for AC/DC, and they earned massive respect from international bands like Guns N' Roses, who cited them as a major influence. But just when everyone thought they had Angry figured out—tattooed tough guy, snarling rock dog—he flipped the script. In 87, Angry released “Suddenly”, an emotional power ballad that no one saw coming. The song became a global phenomenon when it was used in Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan's wedding episode on the soap Neighbours, watched by millions. As the 90s rolled around, Angry became more than just a rock singer. He emerged as a tv personality. His charisma, honesty, and at times fiery opinions made him a household name in Australian media. In 92, he showed off his acting chops in the post-apocalyptic classic Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, starring alongside Mel Gibson and Tina Turner. But Angry also channeled his influence into causes he cared about. He became a passionate youth advocate, speaking out against domestic violence and drug abuse, drawing on his own difficult upbringing to connect with vulnerable communities. He even flirted with politics—running as a Senate candidate in later years.Despite countless lineup changes, personal tragedies—including the loss of many original Rose Tattoo members to cancer—and the ever-changing music landscape, Angry has kept the Rose Tattoo flame burning. He's the longest-tenured member and has fronted the band through decades of Australian and international tours. In recent years, Rose Tattoo have toured extensively across Australia and Europe, proving the band's enduring legacy. Angry, now in his 70s, continues to perform with the same raw energy that made him a legend in the first place.Angry Anderson isn't just an Australian rock icon—he's a survivor, a storyteller, and a symbol of the grit and soul that defines Australian hard rock.Discover all that makes Angry Anderson tick in this compelling episode. S8E4 was prerecorded on 22 Jan 2025 to allow me to attend the Green Day, Offspring, and Fokofpolisiekar gig live in Cape Town on 23 Jan the night this show went out on Rebel Rock Radio. And what a gig it was. It seems like forever since South Africa got International bands of that calibre. The last time I was out for a show was for Guns N' Roses in 2018, and then Covid happened and KISS got cancelled and that was the last time I was at a live gig. So, it was amazing and one of the best shows I have ever seen. Hats off to Fokofpolisiekar who show just how good they are amongst the best international acts in the world Anyway back to this show. We had all the normal features; Twisted Triplets, Evolutions: Judas Priest, The Immortals, and This Week in Rock and Metal, PLUS The Diabolical Challenge is back. We looked at four albums produced Martin Birch. Heaven & Hell, The Number of the Beast, Rising, and Assault Attack by Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Rainbow and Michael Schenker Group respectively. Interview by Kris PetersFor the better part of three decades New Zealand rock outfit Shihad have ruled the proverbial roost, with albums like The General Electric, Pacifier, and even their most recent offering Old Gods showcasing an unflinching course of rock DNA to satisfy even the harshest of critics.Songs like My Minds Sedate, Pacifier, Home Again and Tear Down Those Names became the go-to-songs on pub jukeboxes everywhere, but it was in the live domain where Shihad excelled. Frontman Jon Toogood's energy and vibrancy each time the band hit the stage has always been infectious, enabling Shihad to thrive on a variety of levels to a mixed bag of audiences.Put simply, they deservedly command respect in the same league of bands like AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Grinspoon in the annals of Australian/New Zealand rock history. But, as inevitably happens to everything, Shihad's time is drawing to an end, choosing to go out on their own merits instead of waiting for the axe of public expectation to fall. With a series of farewell shows planned between Australia and New Zealand before the band's official changing of the guard in their hometown of Wellington on March 15, Toogood sat down with HEAVY to say goodbye. The Shihad way."At the moment people are saying 'these shows must be emotional'," he smiled, "but it's more like, no, these shows are wicked because we've rehearsed hard, and we're playing a lot of stuff that's quite challenging and quite different to what we've played in the past. Obviously we're going to have to play the bangers - which is totally cool because we love those songs and there's reasons why they are bangers - but we're doing deep dives into records that we've never done before. It keeps you on your toes. We're not gonna be phoning these shows in. We have to work, which is great, and I like that."In the full interview, Jon talks more about the shows and what to expect, the reasons behind calling it a day, the New Zealand shows late last year and how the fans reacted, maintaining energy and enthusiasm for performing as he gets older, playing The General Electric and Pacifier in full at select shows, what he will miss most about being in Shihad and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Ronnie SimmonsHe's played guitar with Rose Tattoo, Faster Pussycat and Richie Ramone – which automatically triples his cool factor (although he's too modest to say so himself). Ronnie Simmons joins us from Australia to discuss his latest band, Ronnie Simmons and the Redback Spiders, lessons learned from Angry Anderson, Taime Downe and Richie Ramone, plus jamming with Slash and falling in love with America.Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
Guitarist Ronnie Simmons has spread his talents far and wide over the span of his playing career, travelling as far away as LA to play with Faster Pussycat and Richie Ramone before settling on a permanent gig with Australian rock royalty Angry Anderson and Rose Tattoo. While travelling the world doing the thing you love may seem like the pinnacle of musical achievement, Simmons had one more peak to conquer.Fronting his own band. And what better way to launch into that next phase of your career than to record a collection of tunes, utilising the help of former bandmates and good friends to herald your arrival?Rather than jumping the gun with a product that has obvious potential but nothing by which to test that mettle, Simmons decided to commit a bunch of tracks to disk for future release before making his Australian assault, recording what would become his debut EP Bite! Part 1 at One More Time Recording in Los Angeles with the backing of Richie Ramone (The Ramones) and the late Chris Moye on drums, Johnny Martin (LA Guns) on bass, backing vocals by Danny Nordahl (Faster Pussycat) and Scott Churilla (Reverend Horton Heat). With this assortment of punk-fuelled rock numbers safely recorded, Simmons returned to Australia to start gigging with his new band Ronnie Simmons & The Redback Spiders, confident in the knowledge he had a viable product to sell. With the EP set for release on November 22, HEAVY sat down with Simmons for a chat about the new band plus anything else that seemed relevant."I'm excited," he enthused when we asked how the nerves were. "I was listening over the masters this morning and I'm really psyched to release this into the world."We point out that Ronnie is used to releasing music with other bands, but with this being his first out the front of a project, the pressure is on possibly more than usual."Yeah, this is the first time in a long, long time I'm out the front doing my own thing," he affirmed. "It's a very new experience for me, putting myself out there like that. A lot of these songs are straight from the heart, so it's very different to slotting into an already existing band. I'm enjoying it. It's a lot to think about, and it's a new experience, but I think I've got enough gigs and experience under my belt to give it a solid crack (laughs)."In the full interview, we discussed Bite! Part 1, with Ronnie explaining the sound is a mix of his various musical influences, including punk, ska, and rock. We spoke about the two singles released so far and how they represent the EP, as well as the decision to record in LA. He ran through his musical journey from LA back to Australia and the advantage of playing in bands of differing styles and genres.Talk turned to the band's upcoming run of shows, with Ronnie telling us what to expect from the band live and who is in the outfit full time plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Australian music is on the rise - and deservedly so.While there are bands like RedHook, Ocean Grove, Void Of Vision and Alpha Wolf who are lighting up the airwaves and flying the flag for the younger generation, the more old-school rock and hard rock bands are also showcasing their worth.Bands like The Poor and Rose Tattoo, who have been around for more than three decades, are playing to large crowds and still producing quality music, but it is the comradeship and support bands of all seasons continually offer each other that stands out the most.Case in point the upcoming union of two of Australia's leading rock/hard rock outfits in The Screaming Jets and Mammal, who are hitting the road in November for a run of eight dates dubbed the Life Blood Tour, including a select number of all ages shows. It is a union that few ever saw coming, but also one which is a tantalising match made in the halls of metal that, at the very least, will introduce fans of each band to a different side of the rock coin to which they are accustomed to listening to.The Screaming Jets are more of your true blue Aussie workhorses, with a truck load of hit singles and a spiralling career once more on the rise. Mammal, on the other hand, are a raging pit of funk-fuelled metal, still smashing it on the back of recent album The Penny Drop with so much more to give.If there's one thing the two bands have in common, it is their enigmatic and proudly outspoken frontmen, both of which sat down earlier this week for a chat with HEAVY. On their own, one on one, Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets) and Ezekiel Ox (Mammal) are a ball of fun-fuelled energy, but put them together and anything could happen.Which it did."I'm really excited about this tour," Gleeson began. "I've seen Mammal's exploits On YouTube and stuff, but I can't wait to see them live, and I'm sure the Jets fans, part of the reason they love our band is the energy and that real rock and roll vibe that we bring and that's why I think they are really gonna take to Mammal.""I reckon you're right there, Dave," Ox picked up. "It's a great opportunity for us to get in front of some fans that will be a bit different and vice versa. There will be some Mammal people coming that may not have seen you guys yet, but I think most of the people would not have seen us. We're so looking forward to it. We're probably leaning further towards a slightly heavier sound when we get going. It's been interesting discussing it with the boys and how we're tailoring our set to make sure that we're giving the Jets fans what they want. We love all our songs, but it's been fun thinking. It's a bit of a different one for us, but we're absolutely pumped, to say the least."In the full interview, we discuss where the idea came from to put The Screaming Jets and Mammal on the same line-up, their contrasting musical styles and how they will complement each other, their confidence as frontmen and how important that side of the performance is, their first memories of each other's respective bands, what to expect from each band, between song banter, which songs of each other's bands they like the most, all ages shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Paired with a wacky Burt Lancaster, a bullying Anthony Quinn, a quietly intense Brando, or a nihilistic teenager, Magnani takes on such enemies as the racist South, patriarchy, and the class system with varying results, but always with ferocity and gusto. We all know that rock and pop stars live in a different universe to us mere mortals. Many make strange demands for things that must be provided before they'll perform a show. Today, we look at stars' demands – whether extreme or reasonable, or blindingly hilarious! You won't believe some of them. In Jeff's Rock News, Keith Richards has covered Lou Reed's, “Waiting for the Man”, U2 has played a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere, an unheard Jimi Hendrix song has been included in a time capsule placed on the moon, Deep Purple has released a 50th Anniversary video for “Smoke on the Water” featuring dragons and John Fogarty's Australian tour is cancelled. Our “Album You Must Listen to Before You Die” is Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark's “1981 debut, Architecture and Morality. We didn't think much of it! It's fun episode. Enjoy. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Michelle Danner, Director, “Miranda's Victim” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Michelle Danner, is a highly acclaimed, multi-award winning actress, filmmaker and world renowned acting coach. On the stage, she starred in over 30 plays and musicals including Tennessee Williams' “The Rose Tattoo”, “House of Yes”, “Bright Ideas”, “Ibsen's Ghosts”, and “One White Crow”. She's also directed many award winning stage productions including “The Night of the Black Cat”, “Mental the Musical”, “You're on the Air”, and “Jane Fonda in the Court of Public Opinion.” On the big screen, she's appeared in several movies by other directors, including “Reach” and “Ovation”, as well as in many of her own movies, including “How to Go Out on a Date in Queens”, “Hello Herman”, “The Bandit Hound”, “Bad Impluse”, and “The Runner”. Her movies have won a staggering 56 awards at some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. She's here to discuss her latest film, entitled “Miranda's Victim”, which in my opinion, is an absolute masterpiece. The movie tells the true story of the origins of the “Miranda warning”, which the police must give to every criminal suspect and accused person, that they have the right to remain silent, and that anything they say can be used against them in a court of law. Until our guest made this movie, most people had no idea about the circumstances behind the landmark 1966 US Supreme Court ruling in the Miranda case – circumstances involving the horrific kidnapping and rape by Mr. Miranda, of Patricia Weir in Phoenix, Arizona in 1963. This riveting movie, starring Abigail Breslin, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland, Luke Wilson, Ryan Phillippe and Kyle MacLachlan, tells the jaw dropping story of the many astonishing twists and turns throughout the groundbreaking court case, from the perspective of Ms. Weir, the victim. The movie, which is available for streaming on Hulu, has won 15 film festival awards, and has been universally praised not only by film critics, but also by leading members of the legal profession and justice system. In addition to being a highly acclaimed stage director and filmmaker, our guest is also a renowned acting coach. She's given acting workshops around the world and she's worked with many A-list actors including Donald Sutherland, Henry Cavill, Gerard Butler, Penelope Cruz, Andy Garcia, Salma Hayek and many others. She teaches classes at the Michelle Danner Studio and the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory. She's also the Founding Director of the Creative Center for the Arts, where she has served as Artistic Director for more than 20 years. Actor-director Michelle Danner is also an acting coach at the Los Angeles Acting School who specializes in the Meisner, Strasberg, Adler, Hagen, Chekhov and Stanislavsky techniques. Alongside Larry Moss, she's also the founding and Artistic Director of the Edgemar Center for the Arts.In 2006, Michelle made her feature film directing debut with, How to Go Out on a Date in Queens, winning the L.A. Film Awards' Best Acting and Best Movie awards. Her 2013 film, HelloHerman, catalogs the effect that peer abuse, parental neglect and the general coarsening of society has on a typical high school student. Michelle has acted in and directed over thirty plays in Los Angeles and New York, with her favorite acting credit cited as the Dramalogue award-winning Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo. Among her other award-winning stage work, she produced The Night of the Black Cat at Edgemar, she directed the world premiere of Mental the Musical, and she wrote and directed You're on the Air, an improvisation-based comedy.Michelle also produced and acted in the award-winning short Dos Corazones, directed by Larry Moss. And she was voted favorite acting coach by the readers of Backstage. Notable projects Michelle has directed include: Bad Impulse with Paul Sorvino, Ticket to the Circus, a one-woman play about the life of Norris Church Mailer, starring Anne Archer. And most recently she produced and directed the feature, Miranda's Victim, a biographical crime drama depicting the origins of the well-known Miranda warning. The movie stars Abigail Breslin, Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland, Ryan Phillippe, Kyle MacLachlan, Mireille Enos, Taryn Manning, and Emily VanCamp. I've seen Miranda's Victim and can tell you it's an intense and deeply emotional story about how the legal system can be impacted and changed by overcoming injustice amid challenging circumstances. www.michelledanner.comwww.edgemarcenter.org

EPISODE 16 - “Beginner's Luck” - 01/01/2024 To win an Oscar sometimes takes decades of hard work and dedication to your craft — just ask PAUL NEWMAN, GERALDINE PAGE, and JESSICA TANDY. In fact, when Newman finally won the Oscar in 1987 for “The Color of Money,” after being nominated six times previously, he didn't even bother to show up to the ceremony. “It's like chasing a beautiful woman for 80 years,” he told the Associated Press. “Finally, she relents and you say, ‘I'm terribly sorry. I'm tired.'” However, there is a small group of actors who didn't have to chase that beautiful Oscar for 80 years. They won for their very first film. This week we take a look at this rarified group.
