Now considered an adopted South Australian after 20 years in the state, Dave beams with pride discussing his 17-year-old son's musical talent. The veteran rocker delivers fascinating insights into how established artists are navigating today's music landscape. "The last album we did cost us 70 grand," Dave reveals, explaining why The Screaming Jets are shifting toward releasing singles rather than full albums. This pivot represents a significant change for career musicians adapting to the streaming era – maintaining relevance through periodic releases while avoiding massive upfront production costs. Fans will be thrilled to hear Dave still has a country album in development, following up his beloved first solo effort. The conversation turns to his upcoming performance with Australian rock royalty John Swan (73) and Kevin Borich (78) at The Gov. Despite being the "baby" of the trio at 56, Gleeson shares their relentless passion for performance. "I'd hate to be told I couldn't do it anymore, rather than deciding I didn't want to do it anymore," he reflects, revealing the deep connection these veterans feel to their craft. Their show promises an electrifying mix of Screaming Jets, Angels, and Party Boys classics alongside rock standards from AC/DC and more. Dave also mentions the "supergroup" Fabulous Caprettos with Jack Jones and Rai Thistlethwayte, who'll be performing seated shows – a format that allows for storytelling between songs but would feel restrictive for his more raucous rock projects. Join us for this candid conversation that captures the evolving journey of one of Australia's most beloved rock personalities. What has Gleeso been up to lately? With the tour expanding to over 150 shows, this marks the most extensive touring schedule of his 60-year career—proving that retirement isn't in his vocabulary. From humble beginnings in Melbourne church choirs to forming iconic bands, Ross shares the pivotal moments that shaped his extraordinary journey. He reveals how Daddy Cool emerged from his experimental band Sons of the Vegetal Mother, becoming the surprise hit of the 1971 Myponga Festival before they'd even released a record. Their pioneering music video for "Eagle Rock," filmed at this festival, helped propel them to nationwide success—years before MTV made music videos essential.Beyond his performing career, Ross offers insights into his work as a producer, including discovering and producing Skyhooks, whose success eventually surpassed Daddy Cool's record-breaking sales. Though selective about production work, his golden touch extended to working with Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, The Screaming Jets, and writing hits for other artists—including "Touch of Paradise" for John Farnham and "I Come In Peace" for Joe Cocker's final recording. The conversation takes unexpected turns through Ross's television appearances, his induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame (twice!), and the peculiar pants-dropping tradition that accompanies "Eagle Rock" at weddings and parties across Australia, revealing plans for attempting a world-record charity event around this unique phenomenon.Despite his legendary status, Ross remains refreshingly grounded. His latest blues EP tackles modern social media addiction, showing his continued relevance while honoring his musical roots. As he continues selling out venues with his band The Peaceniks, it's clear that after six decades, Ross Wilson isn't just still rocking it—he's reaching new heights.Subscribe now to hear more intimate conversations with the artists who shaped Australian music history! What has Ross the Boss been up to lately? Interview by Kris PetersIn an age where people and their personalities are becoming increasingly sanitized it is refreshing to come across an artist still unafraid to say things as they are without self-censorship or undue thought to repercussions. A singer/songwriter who adheres to the old school ethos of respect and honesty rather than rainbows and butterflies, and who isn't afraid to get her hands - or her music - dirty.Melbourne based rock dynamo Envy Marshall is all of that and more. A fiercely independent artist with an unapologetic attitude, Marshall openly confronts her own independence and themes of equality and the smashing of gender stereotypes. And all of that within just one song.Marshall recently released the track Like A Man, showcasing her powerhouse vocals, razor-sharp lyrics, and undeniable charisma. With its infectious chorus, gritty guitars, and a hypnotic mid-tempo groove, Like A Man is a rallying cry for authenticity and empowerment. Envy's lyrics cut through the noise with glaring honesty, blending cheeky wit with raw honesty, as she chastises at one point 'stop telling me to act like a woman when you know that I f**k like a man.'But one look through her resume, and it's obvious Marshall isn't just here to make up the numbers. She is here to make a difference, and that's one thing few people can claim to truly aspire to. HEAVY caught up with Marshall between L.A showcase gigs, where she is aiming to strike next."The words and the lyrics have a bit of shock value to it," Envy began when asked about the positive reception afforded Like A Man, "but I also think it's because people are really wanting music like this now. I didn't write it to be popular. I didn't write it because I wanted anyone to react to it. I wrote it because I just really freaking needed to say it. And the response has been really good."HEAVY mentions the confronting nature of the song but also emphasizes the point that if you get through that initial moment of being taken aback, there is a much deeper underlying message."You can see some women who first of all go, ooh, and then come up to you later and go, I love you," Envy smiled. "You know what I mean? It's nice because I really care about women. I love men and I love women and whatever you want to be called, I love you. But to have a woman come up to me and give me a hug and say, thanks, that was awesome. That means a lot. Especially when there's not a lot of female fronted rock bands writing songs for women."In the full interview, the discussion focused on Envy Marshall's experiences and upcoming projects in the music industry. Envy shared her journey from Adelaide to Melbourne in 2017, highlighting her collaboration with Paul Woseen from The Screaming Jets, who played a significant role in her artistic development. She emphasized the importance of rebellion in rock music and her recent promotional tour in Los Angeles, which has opened up new opportunities for her career. Envy also discussed her song Like a Man, which has garnered significant attention and aims to challenge societal norms while empowering individuals. Envy also provided insights into her upcoming video release for Like A Man and her current album project, which promises a blend of rock with influences from other genres plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Australian music is on the rise - and deservedly so.While there are bands like RedHook, Ocean Grove, Void Of Vision and Alpha Wolf who are lighting up the airwaves and flying the flag for the younger generation, the more old-school rock and hard rock bands are also showcasing their worth.Bands like The Poor and Rose Tattoo, who have been around for more than three decades, are playing to large crowds and still producing quality music, but it is the comradeship and support bands of all seasons continually offer each other that stands out the most.Case in point the upcoming union of two of Australia's leading rock/hard rock outfits in The Screaming Jets and Mammal, who are hitting the road in November for a run of eight dates dubbed the Life Blood Tour, including a select number of all ages shows. It is a union that few ever saw coming, but also one which is a tantalising match made in the halls of metal that, at the very least, will introduce fans of each band to a different side of the rock coin to which they are accustomed to listening to.The Screaming Jets are more of your true blue Aussie workhorses, with a truck load of hit singles and a spiralling career once more on the rise. Mammal, on the other hand, are a raging pit of funk-fuelled metal, still smashing it on the back of recent album The Penny Drop with so much more to give.If there's one thing the two bands have in common, it is their enigmatic and proudly outspoken frontmen, both of which sat down earlier this week for a chat with HEAVY. On their own, one on one, Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets) and Ezekiel Ox (Mammal) are a ball of fun-fuelled energy, but put them together and anything could happen.Which it did."I'm really excited about this tour," Gleeson began. "I've seen Mammal's exploits On YouTube and stuff, but I can't wait to see them live, and I'm sure the Jets fans, part of the reason they love our band is the energy and that real rock and roll vibe that we bring and that's why I think they are really gonna take to Mammal.""I reckon you're right there, Dave," Ox picked up. "It's a great opportunity for us to get in front of some fans that will be a bit different and vice versa. There will be some Mammal people coming that may not have seen you guys yet, but I think most of the people would not have seen us. We're so looking forward to it. We're probably leaning further towards a slightly heavier sound when we get going. It's been interesting discussing it with the boys and how we're tailoring our set to make sure that we're giving the Jets fans what they want. We love all our songs, but it's been fun thinking. It's a bit of a different one for us, but we're absolutely pumped, to say the least."In the full interview, we discuss where the idea came from to put The Screaming Jets and Mammal on the same line-up, their contrasting musical styles and how they will complement each other, their confidence as frontmen and how important that side of the performance is, their first memories of each other's respective bands, what to expect from each band, between song banter, which songs of each other's bands they like the most, all ages shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Dynamic rock outfit HER have been steadily building a name for themselves on the Australian music scene, with their infectious blending of rock and blues-infused grunge goodness finally getting the band national recognition following the release of their latest EP, Toe Rag.With members having played with and shared stages with the likes of The Screaming Jets, Keith Richards, Divinyls and Billy Thorpe, HER most certainly have the pedigree for a career in rock, they just need the exposure.Which comes next weekend in the form of the Mitchell Creek Blues and Rock Festival, where HER have been given the honour of closing out the three day festival on September 15. Undoubtedly the heaviest act of the 120 artists asked to perform, HER are flying the flag for harder-edged music, and do so with pride and enthusiasm.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Mish Davie and bass player Jerome Smith to find out more."It just came out of the blue," Davie enthused about the opportunity to close Mitchell Creek. "I was contemplating where are we going? What are we doing with this band? It's such hard work, and I was really having a downer to the point of thinking I don't even know if it's worth keeping this band going. And then the phone rang, and it was Jimmy, and he said 'hey Mish how would you like to come and play at a festival I organise?' So it was totally out of the blue but he said he had been listening to us for a while, and he was really drawn to the single The Truth, and that's basically how it happened."Part of HER's appeal comes in the fact that they are continually pushing their musical boundaries in an attempt to break free from the mould of being another in a long line of run-of-the-mill rock bands that are a dime a dozen in music."It's such a process," Davie explains of HER's overall sound. "For me personally, I collaborate still with my old guitarist. We've got so much stuff on the shelf we have yet to release, so that has been interesting bringing that in. When I first started this band six years ago, that was all the songs I had with my back catalogue. That first album was quite eclectic. Including Jerome, there's four drummers on the first album, so it was all hired guns. Now it's been 18 months to two years with this line-up, and Mark McLeod (drums) is now on board, and he has a really distinct style, so that's been interesting melding that into what we do with the kind of stoner rock and slower, bluesy rock stuff. It's really amped up the style and pushed it - because Mark is quite a metal player - and he has pushed what we do heavier. But what has happened with Nelson (guitar), Jerome and Christian (guitar) as well is all of us write. It's just so good to get together with a creative and talented group of people who, in their own right, all write music and have their own style."In the full interview Mish and Jerome talk more about the sound of HER and how it came about, their upcoming show at Mitchell Creek Blues And Rock Fest and what it means to them and their music, what to expect live from HER, the EP Toe Tag and how it was received, pushing their limits musically, finding the balance of genres in the writing and recording stage and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersFifty years of service to any industry is a remarkable effort, but when that industry happens to be the cut-throat one of music, then that achievement takes on ever greater credence. The Angels have long been an institution on the Australian music scene, with their high-energy brand of rock transcending generations of music lovers across this country and beyond. The band have literally been there and done that in a landscape not designed for longevity, bouncing back from tragedy, critical upheaval and anything else the world of music and life has thrown their way.Better known with Doc Neeson out the front, The Angels also welcomed The Screaming Jets' Dave Gleeson to the family for an extended stay, but now, as they enter their second half-century as a band, the baton has been passed on to former drummer, now focal point, Nick Norton. To celebrate this wonderful milestone, The Angels are releasing their 14th studio album - and first in over a decade - on June 28. Simply titled Ninety Nine, the album marks Norton's first release as vocalist but promises all of the hard-edged rock and roll swagger made famous by The Angels over so many years. The band has also announced their 50 Not Out national tour, starting in June as well, with Norton putting some time aside recently to tell HEAVY about all of the new adventures in store for The Angels."We're stoked about the album," he beamed. "I actually haven't been this excited about a new album since I was… at least ten-plus years. It's always good to be on recordings, and it's an exciting thing, but this one I have repeatedly said to the band and I think I keep surprising the guys about how excited I am about it (laughs). I'm satisfied with the way the tracks have gone down, the way we made sure that everything has been done to a T and exactly how we wanted it. Even from a vocal perspective, this is the most time I have ever taken to really nail parts and layer up all of these interesting harmonies and got it exactly as I was hearing it. Some of these tracks we recorded the rhythm section stuff for four years ago, and we've been laying guitars over since. It was not long before Christmas last year we went on this whole kind of extra thing to get the album finished, and we did a couple of big sessions down in Melbourne at Light Hill Studios to get the album all finished up for the 50th year. Suddenly it's gone from 'we'll get around to finishing the album' to we actually have something here, let's do this."In the full interview, Nick talks more about Ninety Nine and how it sounds, what they were going for with the overall sound and how The Angels' DNA is spread throughout it, lead single Ninety Nine and why it was chosen to represent the album, delivering what is expected of you while still coming up with something fresh, taking over from Dave Gleeson, fan reaction to his role as frontman, his history with the angels, writing with the Brewster Brothers, their upcoming tour and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We also say goodbye to Ignatius Jones, of Jimmy and the Boys, along with a series of more conventional roles, and Steve Albini, producer of The Pixies, PJ Harvey and Nirvana. Vale! Our “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is Pet Sounds, by The Beach Boys (1966). Long revered by musicians including The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, this album is a masterpiece of production and innovation. How do we fit it all into an hour? S7E16 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 April 2024. As always it was a mixed bag of new and old, heavy and not so heavy. Listeners rated it the most fun ever. This week's Twisted Twins featured tracks called ‘Bulletproof'. We could have had Twisted Quintuplets as there were 5 different tracks with that name but we settled on a triplet. Five Finger Death Punch, Sinner, and Paul Stanley. Immortals this week came from Alter Bridge and the track was of course ‘Blackbird'. Everything about it is perfect, from the way it builds all the way through to Tremonti's masterful solo and Myles hitting all those high notes. The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘P'. The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one. David Sean Gleeson, (born 3 June 1968) is the lead singer of Australian hard rock group The Screaming Jets. He was born in Newcastle, New South Wales . . Gleeson formed his first rock band, Aspect, in 1985, with school pal, Grant Walmsley. In January 1989 Gleeson on lead vocals and Walmsley on guitar, were joined by Brad Heaney on drums, Richard Lara on guitar and Paul Woseen on bass guitar, to form The Screaming Jets as a hard rock band in Newcastle. Within twelve months they had performed more than 280 live shows, they established a reputation for being one of the best young live bands in Australia, winning the praises and support slots of The Angels, The Choirboys and The Radiators. By late 1989, The Screaming Jets had won youth radio station Triple J's National Band Competition. They signed a recording deal with the leading independent label rooArt. The Screaming Jets moved from their hometown Newcastle to Sydney's notorious Kings Cross district in early 1990, and recorded their debut album All For One in mostly midnight to dawn sessions at a local studio, after playing live shows seven nights a week. In 2006, Gleeson appeared as the vocal coach for actress Kate Fischer in the televised celebrity singing competition It Takes Two. He returned to the show in 2007 and partnered with TV presenter, Julia Zemiro. In early 2011 Gleeson was offered a radio show with the Triple M network. By mid-year he was hosting two shows, Access All Areas and Rock of Ages, interviewing artists including Jimmy Barnes and Don McLean, and giving an inside view of the music industry. Late that year Gleeson recorded an album, Take It to the Streets (31 August 2012), with his childhood idols, The Angels, as their new lead singer, and they completed a national tour. On 19 June 2016 at the Governor Hindmarsh - Adelaide, Dave Gleeson was inducted into The South Australian Music Hall Of Fame, alongside The Angels. On 31 January 2022 he returned to Australian rock radio station Triple M filling the 7-10pm nightly slot with his new show Triple M nights with Dave Gleeson broadcasting across Australia from Triple M Adelaide studio.
