In May 1990, then-unknown 21-year-old Mariah Carey released her debut single, “Vision of Love.” Within a handful of weeks, the song would hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and it would be followed by four additional No. 1 tracks, setting records and making it clear: Mariah Carey and her five-octave vocal range were here, and pop music would never sound the same. Mariah had No. 1 singles every year for the entire 1990s. She would go on to win numerous Grammys, be named Artist of the Decade by Billboard, and receive other accolades. Her career has had peaks and valleys, scandals and rebrandings, but there is no denying: Mariah Carey is one of the most important recording artists of the last 40 years, and one of the most incredible voices in the history of popular music. So join the Great Pop Culture Debate as we hit the highest of the highs as we determine the Best Mariah Carey Song – at least until mid-2025, when we're recording this. Songs discussed: “Always Be My Baby,” “Shake It Off,” “Love Takes Time,” “My All,” “Emotions,” “When You Believe” (w/Whitney Houston), “Obsessed,” “Hero,” “Fantasy,” “Honey,” “Dreamlover,” “One Sweet Day” (w/Boyz II Men), “Vision of Love,” “Heartbreaker” (w/Jay-Z), “Make It Happen,” “We Belong Together” Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelist Kevin Dillon, returning guest Nick Everage, and special guest Steven Salvatore — author and Mariah superfan — as they discuss 16 of Mariah's most notable tracks. Here we are again, 2 weeks into the NFL season and the Giants and Jets are both 0-2. The Giants played prevent defense which didn't make any sense with the Cowboys having one of the best kickers in the league. Cowboys fans should be concerned that they gave up all that offense to a Giants team that normally can't seem to score. Gio wonders why they put Jaxson Dart in for a few plays when Russell Wilson was having a career game. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and we heard the TD from Wilson to Nabers with :25 seconds to play. We also heard the call of the Cowboys game winning FG. We then heard the sounds of the Jets losing to the Bills as they couldn't stop James Cook. We heard Joe Burrow go down with a serious turf toe injury. Aaron Judge homered again, but the Yankees lost to the Red Sox. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer has a stat-pack stat regarding Daniel Jones and the Colts. Gio thought the Browns and Bears would cover this weekend and both got blown out.

The Denver Broncos had their chances, but on day where the game went back and forth, and you knew it would come down to one or two plays. The Broncos in the end, were on the wrong side of those critical moments. #unitedinorange #broncos #broncoscountry #broncoscountryblitz #nfl #denvsind #podcast
We return to the well for a third time (the last 2 being 5 years ago) with Led Zeppelin in Detroit, July 13, 1973 with an amazing, blazing show. I play a beautiful Since I've Been Loving You along with a powerful twofer of Heartbreaker into Whole Lotta Love. There's a lot of funk involved and Jimmy, Jonesy, and Bonzo are in the zone the entire time. A good one.
Instant Analysis is back for the 2025 season, as the guys hop in the studio to break down one of the wilder regular season losses in recent memory. This game had just about everything except competent defense, and it was the Ravens who finally gave way on that side of the ball to lose a Week 1 stunner. We discuss an amazing night from this offense, a lackluster show just about everywhere else, and where this leaves Baltimore going forward. That's right, folks. This is the second-to-last episode of "John Updike's Ghost," which will end with Episode 100. But not to worry! We'll be launching a new podcast not long afterward, with a new name and a little bit of a new focus. In the meantime, though, we've got a cracker-jack episode for you this week, with a bunch of books we really like. Here's the deal: - "Flashlight" by Susan Choi, which is one of those books you tell other people about. The history of Korea-Japan-China conflict is at its heart. - "The Wall," by Marlen Haushofer (translated by Shaun Whiteside), which is a classic of post-apocalyptic Feminist literature, and completely delivers, with a story of self-sufficiency that speaks to the essence of humanity's relationship with nature. - "A Month in the Country," by J.L. Carr, which a classic of pastoral literature, a treatise on hard work well done and the value of rural community. - "Fonseca," by Jessica Francis Kane, which is the made-up story of author Penelope Fitzgerald's apocryphal trip to Mexico (look up who Penelope is; she's dope). - "Heartbreaker," by Mike Campbell and Ari Surdoval, which is among the best musician memoirs ever produced, the story of the creation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but so much more than that.

It's interesting that Mike has never dusted this one off with the Dirty Knobs and I think this goes back to him talking about how difficult a period this was and given the circumstances around its conception you can see why it might be ground he wouldn't want to revisit. The song was a mainstay on the Echo tour however and in "Spotlight on a Heartbreaker" series, which appeared on the official website many years ago and saw fans email questions in for one of the band to answer, Mike was asked “What is your favourite song to perform live and why”, His response? “This tour I liked "I Don't Wanna Fight" 'cause I got to be king!”Song : https://youtu.be/_Lf7eM9qCTcDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Shannon Howell...what can I say to explain the level of athleticism, grit, dedication and talent this woman possesses? I first heard of Shannon when I ran the Heartbreaker 50 mile (which she won), and so I decided to look her up on Ultrasignup. Whoa...79 races recorded, and she finished on the podium more than half of these. Mind blowing. Absolutely amazing. So many iconic races she has been able to participate in, and I must say I am a wee bit jealous of her experiences! I could not wait to talk to her, and our conversation did not disappoint. Her running journey is inspiring to put it mildly. We talked about so many of her races and training, and we dove into her experience at Hellbender, but one thing that stood out to me throughout our conversation was her love of people. Whether that was on her group runs or during races, she continued to mention the people she has met and the connections she has made across the country and around the world. As someone that is shy around people I don't know (yes, that's me!), this was so impactful. Her love for trail running and her the joy she finds in others will only help this sport grow and thrive. We need more people like this in all of our lives. Thank you, Shannon, for being an inspiration in so many ways. By the way, this is my first episode recording over the phone and not in person! I was able to FaceTime Shannon, where I could at least see her face-to-face, but she did not have to travel to me to record. I recently decided to take a leap and purchase new equipment to where I can interview guests from anywhere, and I am so excited about this new development!Shannon's Instagram: http://instagram.com/runshanyrunShannon's Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/9214319Follow us on Instagram! @facingvertThank you so much for listening!
In hour one we recap a tough game 1 loss by the Panthers and Joe doubles down on Mike McDaniel's comments regarding the rookie class stepping up.
After the Knicks fired coach Thibs, Gio initially sought a positive but ultimately expressed strong disapproval. Boomer, believing something is amiss "behind the scenes," feels let down as a fan, fearing a step backward next season and demanding an explanation from the organization. Stephen A. Smith criticized Leon Rose for the firing and avoiding the media. The Yankees beat the Guardians with Jazz Chisholm and Volpe hitting homers. The Mets lost to the Dodgers in 10 innings after a Max Muncy homer and Brandon Nimmo's misplay. Juan Soto also homered. Phil Simms stated he doesn't deserve Hall of Fame induction. Johnnie Bryant is rumored as a potential replacement for Thibs.
In this episode of The Planet LP Podcast, host Ted Asregadoo takes listeners on a deep dive into Pat Benatar's groundbreaking early career, examining her first four albums that established her as a pioneering force in hard rock. The episode explores how Benatar shattered the glass ceiling for female artists in a male-dominated genre during the late 1970s and early 1980s, while also revealing the creative challenges that emerged with her fourth release. The journey begins with Patricia Mae Andrzejewski's transformation from a military wife to rock icon, following her path from New York City through various singing gigs to her breakthrough 1979 debut "In the Heat of the Night." Ted analyzes the album's standout tracks, including the chart-topping "Heartbreaker," the new wave-influenced "We Live For Love," and her cover of Johnny Cougar's (later known as John Mellencamp) "I Need a Lover." The episode highlights "Crimes of Passion" (1980) as Benatar's commercial and artistic peak, featuring the iconic "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" and reaching 4x platinum status. Ted shares personal anecdotes about discovering the album during high school and addresses the controversy surrounding the song "Hell Is for Children," clarifying its powerful message about child abuse rather than satanic themes. Moving through "Precious Time" (1981), the discussion covers Grammy-winning track "Fire and Ice" and the explosive "Promises in the Dark," while examining Benatar's creative partnership with guitarist Neil Giraldo. However, the episode takes a bit of a critical turn when analyzing "Get Nervous" (1982), revealing how, despite producing solid singles, the album as a whole felt uneven and suggested that the signature "Pat Benatar Sound" had begun to lose its edge. Ted discusses how the formula that had worked so well across three albums was showing signs of creative fatigue, setting the stage for the dramatic reinvention that would come with "Love is a Battlefield" – a song that would refresh her sound and prove she could evolve beyond her established hard rock persona.

Junk Food Dinner returns with three very random, very different films to wet your weird cinema whistle!Up first, low-budget Baltimore filmmaker Don Dohler brings us a tale of a reanimated corpse that moves into a suburban neighborhood and starts giving music lessons (and also killing people) in Fiend from 1980. Laker Film Room - Dedicated to the Study of Lakers Basketball
The Lakers suffered a gut-punch loss in Game 4, falling to the Wolves by three points after taking a 10-point lead into the final frame. Pete and Darius discuss the loss, highlighted by JJ Redick's decision to start Dorian Finney-Smith for Jaxson Hayes in the 2nd half, play that new starting group the entire 2nd half, and how that decision helped contribute to clear mental and physical fatigue of the team down the stretch. Then later, the guys discuss Austin Reaves' up and down game, Luka and LeBron carrying the offense, Anthony Edwards' great play to close the game, and much more. Bryce and Omari recap the Detroit Pistons’ game 4 matchup against the New York Knicks. While the costly missed foul call was the biggest talking point following the loss, the guys make sure the other noteworthy moments of the game are not overshadowed, such as Cade’s triple double performance. The guys also break down the Pistons’ sluggish start to the game, Ausar Thompson’s usage in this series, and if coach J.B. Bickerstaff needs to make serious adjustments for the team heading into game 5. I was delighted to come across this wonderful recording through Led Zeppelin Boots' amazing YouTube channel. April 14, 1970 had Led Zeppelin playing Ottawa, Alberta in a brilliant, exciting, explosive kaboom of awesomeness. The tape itself in fragmentary and incomplete, but what's here is gold. I play Dazed and Confused, Heartbreaker, and an incredible White Summer/Black Mountainside. This show was a delight!

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2015 conversation with Swamp Dogg. ABOUT SWAMP DOGGR&B cult favorite Jerry “Swamp Dogg” Williams is best known as the co-writer, with Gary U.S. Bonds, of the cross-genre classic, “She's All I Got,” which became a Top 10 R&B single for Freddie North and a #2 country hit for Johnny Paycheck in 1971. Tracy Byrd recorded it in 1996, hitting #4 on Billboard's Country rankings and introducing the song to a new generation of fans. Williams' career began in 1954 when, at the age of 12, he made his first record, “HTD Blues.” He found success in the 1960s, recording the Top 40 R&B hit “Baby You're My Everything” under the name Little Jerry Williams, and writing songs for other artists, including Gene Pitney's Top 20 Pop single, “She's a Heartbreaker.” He became Atlantic Records' first African American staff producer in 1968, but left the following year to pursue independent projects in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. By the 1970s he was an in-demand producer and songwriter, penning Top 40 R&B hits for Doris Duke, Arthur Conley, and Dee Dee Warwick. Around the same time, he reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg, releasing a series of eccentric deep soul albums whose gonzo lyrics were marked by frank sexuality, biting satire, radical politics, and provocative social observations. His debut LP, Total Destruction to Your Mind, was eventually certified Gold, while subsequent releases, including Gag a Maggott, I'm Not Selling Out – I'm Buying In, An Awful Christmas and a Lousy New Year, and The White Man Made Me Do It have earned considerable accolades among underground music lovers and earned Swamp what one journalist described as “a cultural niche somewhere between Rudy Ray Moore and Frank Zappa.” In recent years, his vast catalog has been sampled by Kid Rock, Talib Kweli, DMX, and others.
