(To be read in a dramatic voice) No one would have believed... ... that a tale so vast- of death, alien destruction, heat rays, Phil Lynott, and the Moody Blues- could be told through orchestral prog rock, synths, and frying pans. Yet today, Frizz and Bob pop open Quest's End Paladin Whiskey & Ardbeg Uigedal Scotch to bring you PART ONE of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds- a British sci-fi marvel that, for decades, has been misunderstood and mostly unseen by the American eye. In this first chapter, we set the stage: The backstory. The architects of the sound. The players of this curious sonic war. The chances of you missing this are a million to one, they said. Yet, here you are. Next week... the invasion begins.

Respecting The Musical Legacy Of JOHN SYKES With MARK ALEXANDER-ERBER From GOLDEN ROBOT RECORDS

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersThe world lost a true legend earlier this year, when vocalist/guitarist John Sykes - Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Tygers Of Pan Tang - lost his battle with cancer. While his legacy endures thanks to the music he created, the world has still lost a musical innovator and pioneer with a gift for writing timeless music.Around eight years ago, Sykes entered into a contract with then-fledgling music label Golden Robot Records, agreeing to terms for a new album to be released through the company. But over the ensuing few years and as life and circumstances got in the way, all that was honoured by Sykes in that contract was four songs, written by him with a view to completing a full album down the track, that have until now remained locked away from the world in their original demo state.Since Sykes' passing, the label has gone to the vault and dusted off the cobwebs and had them professionally remixed and remastered by Aussie legendary producer Paul Gommersall (Paul Weller, George Michael, GNR).Paying respect to the music and legacy of John Sykes, Golden Robot decided to allow the music world at least six months to grieve the loss of Sykes before announcing their intentions to release the four songs - the first new music from Sykes in a quarter of a century - as a four-track EP.It was a decision taken with much respect to the situation, the man, and his music, but ultimately one which Golden Robot Records believes serves the best interests of fans and enables them to release material which was to form the nucleus of a full body of work.Golden Robot Global Entertainment's Mark Alexander-Erber sat down with HEAVY to talk us through the release and the history behind four tracks, which could well be the final recording the world hears from a man who has shaped so much of its history."John was introduced to me during the formative days of Golden Robot Records' journey in Los Angeles," Mark explained. "The label officially launched around 2015, and by 2017 we had entered into an agreement with John for a full-length studio album. The original contract was straightforward — John was to deliver a minimum of ten tracks for a complete album.""As per the terms of the agreement, we made an initial payment to John, and everything was progressing well. John preferred to work at his own creative pace, which we respected. The understanding was that upon delivery of additional material, a second tranche of payment would be made. However, as time went on, it became clear that what we had originally paid for and what was ultimately being delivered were two very different things.""That said, we approached the situation the way we always have at Golden Robot — through open communication and a commitment to the relationship. Like many bands we worked with in those early years, it was never just about rigid contractual enforcement; it was about navigating challenges together in good faith.""In the end, what we received were four absolutely outstanding demos — powerful, compelling tracks that truly reflect John's immense talent and artistic voice. While it wasn't the full album we initially set out to produce, those recordings have tremendous value, and we're proud to be the ones bringing them to the world."In the full interview, Mark provided detailed insights into his professional relationship with John Sykes, which commenced in 2017. He acknowledged that while not all contractual obligations were fulfilled to the letter, all parties involved reached mutual compromises in good faith. Mark expressed sincere appreciation for their personal and professional relationship, noting the importance of approaching sensitive matters with discretion and respect. The discussion also included specifics regarding the forthcoming 4-track EP, which will feature two previously unreleased songs along with remastered versions of two existing tracks. Mark confirmed that the estate of the late artist will receive the royalties as stipulated under the terms of the agreement. He conveyed confidence in the artistic and technical quality of the recordings, stating that the work pays a respectful and authentic tribute to John's legacy. The release strategy includes the rollout of two singles ahead of the EP, with the first single scheduled for release in late June through Golden Robot Records on a global basis. We discussed Mark's personal relationship with John and the decision to delay releasing the songs after John's death, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Cue up the Thin Lizzy for this Friday episode as "The Boys" return to the SGS feed. With Andy still overseas, Brendan is joined by Joseph LaMagna and PJ Clark for an insane Friday episode full of conspiracies, horse takes, gorilla hypotheticals, and Golf Advice. After a bit of Kentucky Derby chatter, initial takeaways from the CJ Cup Byron Nelson are shared and Joseph proposes a new "Cam Champ Rule" for PGA Tour venues. The three then preview this week's LIV Korea event and discuss the current state of Jon Rahm, David Puig, and Richard Bland, among others. In news, departments within the PGA Tour are shifting a bit and tournament weeks are now "event weeks" for these local communities. Before Golf Advice, "The Boys" get Brendan's thoughts on the latest 100 men vs. one gorilla hypothetical and wonder which pro golfers would be the biggest assets in this kind of fight. Golf Advice has a Champs Tour legend involved and more hole-in-one discourse. To wrap things up, Brendan chats with Joel Beall about his new book, Playing Dirty, which you can buy here.

- I 1975 hedder King Diamond endnu blot Kim Bendix Petersen. - Michael fortæller om raketguitaristen Ace Frehley, Steffen om en særlig guitarstemning i Blue Öyster Cult-balladen "Then Came The Last Days of May". - Queen indspiller "A Night at the Opera" og hæver baren op i himmelstørrelse med uforlignelige "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Escuchar audio

“If this is their 9th studio album, where does it rank?”  DEATH MAGNETIC, the Rick Rubin produced 9th studio album from Bay Area metal titans METALLICA (and the first studio album featuring Robert Trujillo on bass) is chock full of riffs, tons of ugly chords, a boatload of guitar solos, and loads of twin guitar harmonies that harken back to the thrash metal veterans legendary 80's output, with a sound that is a true return to their original thrash form which could have easily placed this album being released right after …AJFA.  They brought back all of the classic elements (including their iconic logo!) that made METALLICA awesome to begin with and more than made up for their “Angry Loads” era.  Remember to always send back the “medium rare chicken tenders” and if you're using a ride share, make sure to be hammered on at least one part of the journey. Send us a textOn this week's episode, we take a listen to another Listener's Pick: Thin Lizzy's sixth studio album, Jailbreak from 1976. It took some time, but by the time they recorded Jailbreak, Thin Lizzy's had figured out their formula and Jailbreak became their breakout LP. Showcasing the tuneful songs of Phil Lynott and the expert twin guitar interplay of Scott Gorman and Brian Robertson, the album is the ultimate combination or power and melody.Lyrically,  Lynott tapped into mythos of both Irish folklore and the American west to create his own version of story songs written by the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison. Musically, Jailbreak is an absolute blast to listen to, providing future inspiration for both punk bands and bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.  Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Gary Moore – "Still Got The Blues"

Von Hard Rock zum Blues – Gary Moores Neuanfang mit "Still Got The Blues (For You)" Mit "Still Got The Blues (For You)" schlug Gary Moore eine neue musikalische Richtung ein – weg vom Hard Rock, hin zum Blues. Still Got The Blues (For You)" aufzunehmen. King. Zudem wirkte George Harrison an "That Kind Of Woman" mit. "Still Got The Blues" – Ein Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte Was hat George Harrison mit "Still Got The Blues" zu tun? __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Still Got The Blues" wird im Podcast gesprochen (03:49) – "Texas Strut"(16:02) – "Still Got The Blues (For You)"(35:57) – "Moving On"(41:07) – "Oh, Pretty Woman "(49:42) – "King Of The Blues"(1:04:03) – "That Kind Of Woman"__________ Über diese Songs wird außerdem im Podcast gesprochen (09:49) – "All Your Love" von Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton(28:11) – "Dana" von Roland Kovac(29:14) – "Nordrach" von Jud's Gallery(34:44) – "Still In Love With You" von Thin Lizzy(41:08) – "Pretty Woman" von Roy Orbison(41:45) – "Oh, Pretty Woman" von Albert King  (53:57) – "Broken Heart" von B.B. It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Rockshow episode 210 The Story of Phil Lynott and Thin LizzyPhilip Parris Lynott, born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, England, and raised in Dublin, Ireland, was the charismatic frontman, bassist, and primary songwriter of Thin Lizzy—one of the most influential rock bands of the 1970s and early 80s. Known for his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and commanding stage presence, Lynott played a crucial role in shaping the band's signature sound, blending hard rock with Celtic influences and storytelling. The Formation of Thin Lizzy (1969-1972)Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1969, along with drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon (who left shortly after). The band was named after a character from a comic book (The Dandy's “Tin Lizzie”). They signed with Decca Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but mainstream success eluded them at first.Their breakthrough came in 1972 with their reworking of the traditional Irish folk song “Whiskey in the Jar,” which became a major hit in Ireland and the UK. However, after their next few albums underperformed, Eric Bell left the band, leading to a major lineup change that would define their classic sound. The Classic Thin Lizzy Lineup (1974-1980)After Bell's departure, Thin Lizzy transitioned into a twin-guitar rock powerhouse. Lynott recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, forming the band's legendary dual-guitar attack. Their first major success in this era came with “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976) from the Jailbreak album, which remains their most famous song.Notable Albums & Songs:•Jailbreak (1976) – “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak” •Johnny the Fox (1976) – “Don't Believe a Word” •Bad Reputation (1977) – “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Bad Reputation”•Live and Dangerous (1978) – Regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time•Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979) – “Do Anything You Want To,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” “Black Rose”Thin Lizzy became known for their explosive live performances, poetic lyrics, and blending of hard rock with Irish storytelling. However, internal tensions, particularly with Brian Robertson's unreliability, led to lineup changes. The Later Years & Decline (1980-1983)Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after a farewell tour, marking the end of an era.Phil Lynott's Solo Career & Tragic DeathAfter Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career, releasing two albums:•Solo in Soho (1980) – “King's Call,” “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”•The Philip Lynott Album (1982) He also collaborated with musicians like Gary Moore (“Out in the Fields”) and worked on various projects. However, his drug addiction worsened, and in late 1985, he collapsed due to complications from heroin and alcohol abuse.Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.Thin Lizzy's LegacyDespite Lynott's passing, Thin Lizzy's influence remains strong. Various members have carried on the band's music, with Scott Gorham leading tribute tours. Lynott's lyrical storytelling, stage presence, and fusion of Celtic themes with hard rock inspired countless musicians, including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2.Today, Lynott is celebrated as Ireland's first great rock star, with statues, documentaries, and tributes keeping his legacy alive.Essential Listening for New Fans: Phil Lynott remains one of rock's most beloved and tragic figures—a poet, a rocker, and a legend whose music still resonates today.http://www.thinlizzy.org/phil.htmlhttps://youtube.com/@thinlizzyofficial?si=HtxqVIFF3_AuRiWrhttps://www.thinlizzyofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/15serR1qV2/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/thinlizzy_?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://www.instagram.com/thinlizzy?igsh=bjE3aXRvdnhnMDVh#ThinLizzy #PhilLynott #RockLegends #ClassicRock #IrishRock #TheBoysAreBackInTown #Jailbreak #LiveAndDangerous #70sRock #HardRock #WhiskeyInTheJar #BlackRose #DancingInTheMoonlight #RockNRoll #LegendaryBands

Soundgarden emerged as a pioneering force in the Seattle grunge scene, bringing elements of heavy metal and alternative rock into what would come to be known as the Seattle sound.  The group originally found lead singer and primary songwriter Chris Cornell singing from behind a drum set where he was the group's percussionist, but it became clear that this would not work well in live concerts, so Cornell switched to vocals and rhythm guitar while turning over percussion work to Matt Cameron.  Badmotorfinger, the third studio album, finds the group just before it's breakout into grunge superstardom, an event that would occur with the release of their next album.  Taking its name from a spoof on a popular Montrose song, Badmotorfinger sports a strong heavy metal sound, but with tighter songwriting, and a bit of complexity in time signatures and tunings.  It would become the band's highest charting album to date, peaking at number 39 on the Billboard 200 chart, and going double platinum by 1996.  It was also considered a success by critics, and was nominated in 1992 for a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance. While the album definitely has grunge elements in it, as a whole it may be considered more alternative, heavy metal, or hard rock. The band's development makes this album more difficult to pin down into a single genre, and perhaps this makes for a more interesting listening experience. We hope you enjoy this foray into the roots of the grunge movement as Lynch brings us the album for today's podcast. Rusty CageThe opening track to the album was the third single released, and reflects a longing for freedom and a breaking out of the “rusty cage” that life can be.  The guitars are tuned down significantly, giving the riffs a jangling sound.  Johnny Cash would cover it a few years later, turning the song into a country anthem.  OutshinedThis track combines themes of self-doubt and internal struggle with appearances of external success and confidence, creating a clash within the singer.  Cornell creates depth and passion through his vocals.  “Show me the power, child.  I'd like to say that I'm down on my knees today.”Jesus Christ PoseUnlike many tracks, this first single released from the album is credited to all four band members.  The lyrics are a rant against the hypocrisy of religious leaders who turn belief into a means of acquiring power.  This track is an example of a Soundgarden song that is more metal than grunge at this point.Slaves & BulldozersThis song is often described as “doom metal,” and utilizes drop-tuned guitars to create a slow burn, darker sound.  The lyrics encourage the listener to consider how their situation may be turning them into either an obedient slave or a nihilistic bulldozer.  It was the last song Soundgarden played live before Chris Cornell's death in 2017. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Cosby Show”This staple of 80's sitcom had their final episode and went off the air in April 1992.   STAFF PICKS:I Want to Touch You by Catherine WheelWayne kicks off the staff picks with the Manchester sound.  This post-psychedelic song deals with the raw emotions of a shy guy who is infatuated with a particular woman.  “It would really make my day if you'd only move away, 'cause I'm scared that if you stay, I'll want to touch you.” Just Take My Heart by Mr. BigRob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 16.  It was the fourth single from the second album by Mr. Big entitled “Lean Into It.”  The song features some excellent finger picking on an electric guitar toned down to an almost acoustic consistency.  Eric Martin is the lead singer and co-writer of the song.Cold Day in Hell by Gary MooreBruce features a guitar virtuoso from Northern Ireland.  Gary Moore got his start in an Irish band called Skid Row in the late 1960's but is better known as a member of Thin Lizzy.  This lead-off track to his ninth solo studio album called “After Hours” is a straightforward announcement that the man and his lover would never be getting back together. Silent Lucidity by QueensrycheLynch closes out the staff picks with beautiful and epic piece off the Empire album.  Chris DeGarmo, guitarist and primary songwriter for the group, was inspired to write this song after reading a book about lucid dreams.  The first iteration of the song was acoustic guitar and vocals only, and instrumentation was added later. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Simpsons by Danny GattonA rock/blues guitar cover of the main theme of “The Simpsons” takes us out for today's session.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. John Sykes Tribute John Sykes' passing hits hard, partly because he was the same age as me. You don't expect to be making tribute videos for someone from your own generation—a peer who, for many of us, epitomised the 1980s rock dream. But more than that, John Sykes was a driven perfectionist with a distinct vision for his music. He left an indelible mark on the bands he joined, whether it was Tygers of Pan Tang, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, or Blue Murder. To his family—especially his sons—know that John Sykes was truly one of the greats. His riffs, solos, and larger-than-life stage presence continue to inspire guitarists all over the world. Though his time here ended too soon, the music he created remains timeless. Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine
