Ozzy Osbournen ja Ronnie James Dion laulettua Black Sabbathin keulahahmoina, 1980-luvun alussa bändille koitti vaikea aikakausi. Sitä kutsutaan nimellä ”Lost Years”, hämärät vuodet. The songs everyone knows from Only By The Night aren't the whole story. We set aside the monster singles and go searching for the cuts that turned a big rock record into a lasting companion—tracks with space to breathe, edges that scrape, and melodies that stick for reasons other than radio. From the haunted hush of Closer to the grit and drive of Crawl, we unpack why these performances work and how the band's family chemistry locks the groove into place. We trace the band's journey—early buzz overseas, the 2008 breakout, and the Grammys that followed—then zoom in on the parts often missed: Angelo Petraglia's production choices, the interplay of staccato rhythm and stretched vocals, and the fingerprints of influences like Pixies, Thin Lizzy, and the Beach Boys. Manhattan and Revelry get their due as mood pieces that ride the line between indie cool and heart-on-sleeve confessional, while Cold Desert closes the loop with country-tinged glow and a late-night confession that lingers long after the last chord. Our dark horse favorite, Be Somebody, becomes the centerpiece: a soaring chorus, a bassline that sings, and an arrangement that opens wider with each pass. It's the sound of a band stepping onto a bigger stage without losing its scruff or soul. If you've only met this album through Sex On Fire and Use Somebody, consider this your invitation to hear the rest with fresh ears. Hit play, tell us your top three non-hits, and if this breakdown made you re-listen, subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a quick review to help others find the show.Send us a textSupport the show

S9E5 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 29 January 2026 at 19h00 on Bulldogs Radio. It's a great show. On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Geologist! For decades, I've loved the sound of the hurdy gurdy, but I've never heard it used like Geologist uses it on his new solo record, “Can I Get A Pack of Camel Lights?” If SST put out a hurdy gurdy record in the late 80s/early 90s, it might sound like this. By the time Jimmy White was 13, he was skipping school and travelling around England in a black cab to play snooker and hustle adults out of their money. Motörhead - Ace of Spades: The Bar Band That Redefined Metal (Whether They Liked It Or Not)What happens when you salvage a beaten‑up classic from the graveyard? You discover why Motörhead's Ace of Spades remains one of the most influential rock albums of all time—even if Lemmy himself refused to call it metal.Recorded in six weeks during the summer of 1980 and unleashed that October, Ace of Spades is 36 minutes of raw, boogie‑infused rock and roll cranked up to 11. On this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, hosts Jason Ziad, Tim Minneci, and Chip Midnight resurrect this second‑chance poll winner to explore why this album sounds like nothing else—and why that matters. The classic lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, “Fast” Eddie Clarke, and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor weren't trying to invent metal. They were channeling Chuck Berry, ZZ Top, and Thin Lizzy through a blown amp, adding a danceable swing that inspired everyone from Metallica and Slayer to The Hellacopters and New Bomb Turks. This is the sound of a band that knew exactly what they did well and executed it with surgical precision—even when they got sick of playing “Ace of Spades” every night. If you love early Van Halen, AC/DC, the Ramones, or the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, this episode is for you. We break down how Lemmy's voice became the second guitar, why Eddie Clarke's playing is criminally underrated, and what it means when an album charts everywhere from Sweden to Greece but barely makes a dent in the U.S.Episode Highlights00:00 – Intro: Why this listener‑suggested album almost didn't happen01:38 – The “second chance poll” rescue mission and how Testament won the first round05:42 – Chip's legendary three‑question interview with Lemmy (spoiler: he left to “freshen his drink”)10:09 – Album history: recorded August–September 1980, produced by Vic Maile (Hendrix, Zeppelin, Clapton)14:25 – Lemmy's time in Hawkwind, The Damned, and as Jimi Hendrix's roadie17:29 – (We Are) The Road Crew – Why Lemmy's tribute to roadies still makes crew members cry18:20 – The “Ace of Spades” legend: Why Lemmy sang “eight of spades” for years and nobody noticed19:02 – What Works: Jay breaks down the 70s swing, boogie‑rock energy, and danceable aggression25:14 – Fast and Loose – The ZZ Top‑meets‑Motörhead shuffle that proves this is rock and roll27:07 – How Motörhead influenced thrash, punk, and 90s action rock (Hellacopters, New Bomb Turks)31:54 – The Chase Is Better Than the Catch – The Van Halen‑inspired riff that almost wasn't34:18 – Eddie Clarke's guitar genius: Why “Fast” Eddie is the secret weapon of this album37:58 – What Doesn't Work: Aged lyrics, formulaic moments, and why Lemmy's voice is an acquired taste42:34 – Why fade‑outs are the album's worst decision48:53 – Final Verdicts: Worthy Album, Better EP, or Decent Single?55:37 – Gavin Reed gets credit for suggesting this album (and arguing with Jay about whether it's metal)Keep the Conversation GoingThis album came back from the dead because a listener like you suggested it. For a relatively small country, Ireland has had its fair share of mainstream international success in the music business over the years: U2, Van Morrison, Westlife, Thin Lizzy. These have all been familiar to radio listeners around the world for decades. But, an article in The Guardian on Friday suggested that we now have the world's best alternative music scene. Is that true?Dylan Murphy is a Music Journalist and Host of the ‘Mabfield' podcast. He joins Seán to discuss.
Look, it's really simple. The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame hates and disrespects heavy metal. We don't. We believe that metal is one of the cornerstones in the history of rock n roll and we also need to point out the fact that it's one of the most globally-beloved genres of music. We think it's a crime that the bands highlighted in this week's playlist have been snubbed by the bluenoses and weenies that run the rock hall. Get them in! Listen to us state our cases for some obviously unjustly snubbed metal bands in Top Ten Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame Snubs: All Metal Edition Part 2, featuring our metal-loving pal Nick Baker. Ever wondered why some killer 70s rock albums slipped through history's cracks? This week, Dig Me Out listeners unearth Pluto's self-titled 1971 LP—an overlooked slab of psychedelic hard rock, boogie vibes, and vintage cosmic groove. Join us as we dig up the story of the London band with festival creds, a jaw-dropping album cover, and a sound that's part Blue Öyster Cult, part proto-metal pioneers, but all obscurity.Pluto wasn't a household name, but they were closer to the big leagues than you'd think: opening for Thin Lizzy and T. Rex, dropping a record with colored vinyl (ultra-rare for the era!), and chasing UK stardom with ace basslines and fuzzed-out guitars. In this episode, we debate the lost art of 70s rock vocals, the magic of live-in-the-room dynamics, and why some racks collect dust while others become classics. If you're into Deep Purple, Blue Öyster Cult, early Rush, or chasing forgotten bands through dusty record bins, this is your episode.Episode Highlights0:00 – Theme & Intro – Welcome to the 70s Rock spotlight; how Pluto edged out Trapeze, Julian's Treatment, and Dr. Z in the October poll7:30 – Band Origins & Album History – London roots, the Foundations connection, gigging with scene legends, and a wild album art backstory15:20 – The Sound of the Era – Acid rock vs. proto-metal: where Pluto lands, and why categories were still blurry in ‘7122:45 – “She's Innocent” – Acoustic/electric interplay and why this track defines Pluto's subtle power27:10 – B-Side Deep Dive – From “Beauty Queen” to “Mr. Westwood”: the grooves, the jams, and the dream of finding this record for $833:50 – “Ragabone Joe” – The oddball campfire sing-along that splits the hosts—endearing or skippable?39:00 – Better Album, EP, or Single? – The ultimate verdict: trimming, sequencing, and fantasy resurrections with a killer vocalistReady to keep the needle moving? Hot on the platform boot heels of his 2014 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ACE FREHLEY has announced Origins Vol. 1, a collection of 12 newly recorded classic rockers from Ace s formative years featuring some of the biggest names in music, on April 15, 2016. Most notably, KISS frontman PAUL STANLEY joins ACE on Free's cult hit Fire and Water. This collaboration marks the first time that Ace and Paul appear on the same studio recording since KISS' 1998 reunion album Psycho Circus.Other guests are none other than Slash trading leads on Thin Lizzy's classic Emerald, Lita Ford singing and playing lead on The Troggs #1 smash hit Wild Thing, Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 plays guitar alongside Ace as he sings his classic KISS composition Parasite for the very first time, as well as Jimi Hendrix's Spanish Castle Magic. Pearl Jam's Mike McCready also plays guitar with Ace as he finally sings his KISS Alive! mainstay Cold Gin. Ace s cover of Cream s White Room is also an instant gratification track and saw its premier by Rolling Stone early in February 2016.Origins Vol. 1 is the follow up to Space Invader, released in 2014. Space Invader was Frehley's first studio album in five years, and the LP debuted at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, scoring the highest charting position of any KISS solo album ever, and marked Frehley's first return to the Top 10 since KISS' aforementioned 1998's Psycho Circus in 1998.Space Invader, received high praise from critics. Rolling Stone wrote:Gene Simmons has claimed Ace Frehley doesn't deserve to wear Kiss' Kabuki clown paint, but the former Spaceman's first solo LP in five years says otherwise. While the Associated Press hailed: The original Kiss lead guitarist has recorded his best solo album since his groundbreaking self-titled album in 1978.Paste Magazine also confirmed: Space Invader is a good rock album, and it s an even better guitar record.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Mike TrampTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Mike Tramp. After making a nationwide name for himself in his home country of Denmark, with a band called Mabel, Mike set sail for the musical shores of America. Early in the 1980s, Mike Tramp formed the rock band White Lion. Selling millions of records across the country, White Lion charted top 10 hits like "Wait", and "When the Children Cry". Over the years, band members have come and gone on their way to five albums between 1985 & 2008; but one thing never changed... their fearless leader Mike Tramp has always put the music first. In this episode, Mike and I chat about his getting into the music business as a teen in Denmark, and what that was like with his band Mabel. Then we talk about why he felt the need to come to New York to start the rock band White Lion. Naturally we discuss this band's success, and specifically my favorite of their songs "When the Children Cry". We dive into the meaning behind the lyrics, and I give my own interpretation of its meaning at the time to a pre-teen me. Mike graciously lets me play that track, and then we move onto his newest project. In 2023, 2024, & 2025, Mike has released the albums: "Songs of White Lion", "Songs of White Lion Vol II", & "Songs of White Lion Vol III", respectively. He explains why he felt the need to do this and even lets me play one of the new tracks from this third installment. Along the way, we discuss some of Mike's early influences like: Thin Lizzy, Ronnie James Dio, Freddy Mercury, and more. Mike Tramp is everything you hope an 80s rock front man would be. Great guy, open and honest, and generous with his time and talent. Follow Mike on all the socials, find him playing live all over the world, and check out his 16 solo records as well as the newest "Songs of White Lion" installment.
As we continue our track-by-track rundown of Night Demon's Curse of the Damned album for its 10th anniversary, we reach the penultimate song, "Killer." One of the most rarely aired tunes in the band's catalog, "Killer" epitomizes an underrated deep cut. In this episode, Night Demon members discuss the musical and lyrical inspiration for the song, walk you through multiple demos, explain why they view it as a strong album track but not necessarily a strong live track, and present you with a warts-and-all live recording from 2023 in St. Johns, Newfoundland.Box Set Ordering info - cursedamn.comBecome a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. This week we continue our track-by-track exploration of Night Demon's debut album, Curse of the Damned, on the occasion of its tenth anniversary by digging into the song "Mastermind." A rock/metal hybrid with a distinctive swing and a positive message, "Mastermind" is unique in the Night Demon catalog in multiple ways. You will hear about how the band were influenced to write this song, how and why it came late to the Curse writing sessions, the origins of various parts of the song, and its evolution from early demos to final recording to the live version they play today. Special attention is paid to the lyrical content, what Jarvis's inspiration was, why this message is important to him, and how it can have practical application to your daily life and mental outlook. Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 723 for a great conversation with the one-and-only, BP Fallon originally released on March 24, 2014! Below are my original notes form the show. Episode 258 is up and it's a double-header! First up is BP Fallon. His career in the music business started with interviewing John Lennon and Yoko Ono during their bed-in-for-peace in Amsterdam, he then became the "weed tester" for Paul McCartney, he was the publicist for T-Rex, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and more, he's a dj, a best selling author, a photographer and much, much more. Last year, with his band, BP Fallon and the Bandits, he released, Still Legal, an amazing album with a star-studded band. We caught up during sxsw and had a great chat about it all.
