On the pod this week, Dave Schwenson. He was the manager of the New York improv during the comedy boom before becoming the talent booker for the Hollywood improv and "Evening at the Improv". He now runs the comedy workshop at the improv locations in Cleveland and Chicago. This guy has stories for days! Everything from Dave Attell being one of his employees to the time he almost killed Dave Chapelle. He also is a really insightful person when it comes to what bookers are looking for in comedians because that's what he did for so many years. This was a great episode. Dave Schwensen wrote the book on how to be a working comedian. Literally, that's the book he wrote. Dave got a gig booking talent at The Improv and had a whole career in it! He got a cross-section of all kinds of talent from the comedy world. For years he taught courses and coached comedians get work, until he got tired of answering the same questions over-and-over again, and finally put all those answers in a book. Actually, three books! As the talent booker for A&E's Evening At The Improv, working with folks like Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, and as Bud Friedman's talent booker at the L.A. Improv, Dave Schwensen has some insights for stand up comedy careers. I read two of Dave's books when I was starting with stand up comedy in 2006. Then I took a stand up career class put on by Bill Word in Orange County, CA and taught by Dave.
