“It's a thug story tell me can you handle that” In honor of April Fool's Day, we're diving into Taylor Swift's funniest, most unexpected performances — from self-parody and satire to flat-out absurdity. This week, we explore Thug Story (2008), her 2009 SNL monologue, “Monologue Song (La La La)”, and the 2021 SNL Three Sad Virgins sketch to understand how Swift uses humor to subvert expectations, reclaim her narrative, and show off her impeccable comedic timing. Plus: why baking cookies is the running gag that won't quit, what a “benign violation” is, and whether “Cats” was actually meant to be a comedy. Prophecy Radio episode #128 brings Karen and Kristen back together again to discuss the next two chapters of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. They also discuss a couple small snippets of news before diving into a fun fatal flaw quiz. Finally, they discuss chapters 26 and 27 of Chalice of the Gods. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:08:50) Make sure you're keeping up with the @PercySeries Instagram for some fun posts! Have you gotten Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Official Cookbook yet? Have you taken the Camp Half-Pod fatal flaw quiz yet? We had a great time taking it, but maybe not such a great time being read for filth by our results. Since we were split on some of our answers, we decided to take it a second time to see if our results changed! Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:32:26) Let's start off our Chalice of the Gods discussion with chapter 26, “I Negotiate the Terms of My Disintegration.” It's time to wrestle a god! If we had a nickel every time we heard that one… Really, Percy has no good choice here. On the plus side, we love how introspective Percy is in this book. (Thanks, Mark!) We totally understand why the gods are superfans of Geras. There are so many amazing quotes in this chapter. Percy has been through this a time or two, so he knows to clarify the terms of the deal. He also has conditions! Very important conditions. Annabeth is the brains of this operation. And Grover is the doughnut man. “I love you…but you're not Hercules.” Why is it SO FUNNY that Percy hates Hercules so much? It's really interesting that Percy considers giving up on his quest but just can't do it. And therein lies his fatal flaw. Thank goodness for plot armor! Grover's offer of doughnuts almostttt changes Geras' mind. Geras is pretty quick for an old guy! As always, we discuss our favorite lines and favorite moments. Now it's time to get into chapter 27, “My Dying Words Are Super Embarrassing.” The fight has begun! Percy barely got away from Geras' first move. We love the comments from the peanut gallery. Percy's got some great initial ideas for how to defeat old age. Eat your fiber! Why didn't Percy's water powers work on Geras? Once again, we see what kind of connection Percy and Annabeth have—and we are LIVING for it! Geras really isn't someone you want to mess with. The dude is STRONG. Why does Rick have to bring up Jason so casually!? There's a reason we still read Rick Riordan books—not just for the humor but also because of the deeper meanings. We lament about our age a little bit, but in reality, we still feel in development and not like a real person—and that's okay! Let's not forget about our favorite lines and favorite moments. Feedback (01:10:16) Solomon writes in with a suggestion for a new board game we might enjoy. Check out our Spotify playlists if you're looking for certain episodes that correlate with certain chapter discussions. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 129, where we'll discuss the latest Percy Jackson news, along with Chalice of the Gods chapters 28 & 29. This episode's hosts are: Karen and Kristen Each episode, Prophecy Radio‘s hosts will discuss any official news coming out of Camp Half-Blood before doing a chapter by chapter reread of Percy Jackson or one of Rick Riordan's other series. Send us a textOn this episode, we have a listener pick: Nick Lowe and his 1994 album The Impossible Bird. Nick Lowe has been a topic of conversation several times on This Is Vinyl Tap due to the indelible mark the man has left on pop music. Lowe was a bass player, singer and songwriter of the influential pub rock band Brinsley Schwarz. He was a member of the the fabulous Rockpile. He is a producer of some note, having worked with countless artists including Elvis Costello, the Pretenders, Graham Parker, and the Damned. And he is one hell of a song writer, penning such timeless tunes as "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding," "Cruel to be Kind," "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass," and "The Beast In Me."Having found himself is a but of a rough creative patch in the late 1980's, his luck changed withe the success "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, which included a cover of "Peace, Love, and Understanding." That gave Lowe the financial freedom to pursue new musical directions and the music buying public were much the richer for it. The Impossible Bird was a bit of a reboot for Lowe and a different kind of Nick Lowe album; more mature and stripped down, with his vocals front and center. It was not quite country, not quite rockabilly, not quite folk, but a flawless combinations of all of the above. Its a collection of choice covers and fantastic Lowe originals expertly executed by a crack band and easily one of Lowe's finest musical statements that includes some of his most endearing and enduring songs. The announcement of Kamala Harris's Presidential run has set off one of the most pronounced vibe shifts in recent memory. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz make sense of the torrent of memes; the “unholy, immediate alliance” between the Harris campaign and the British pop artist Charli XCX's album “BRAT”; and the endless comparisons to Armando Iannucci's political satire “Veep.” This chaotic but mostly cheerful embrace of Harris's candidacy stands in contrast to the national mood even a few days prior, when a pervasive sense of doom was dominant. How might we reconcile this moment of boosterism with the very real, long-term reasons for despair? “It's really no use being a fan, because you tie yourself to something you have no control over,” Cunningham says. “Recenter your ideas of the future in things that you can feel and touch. I think that that is the imaginative problem of our time, especially when it comes to doom or not doom.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Dirty Dancing” (1987)“BRAT,” by Charli XCX“Veep” (2012-19)“I Created ‘Veep.' The Real-Life Version Isn't So Funny,” by Armando Iannucci (The New York Times)“Should We Go Extinct?: A Philosophical Dilemma for Our Unbearable Times,” by Todd May“The Case for Being Unburdened by What Has Been,” by Rebecca Traister (New York Magazine)“Are We Doomed? Here's How to Think About It,” by Rivka Galchen (The New Yorker)New episodes drop every Thursday. Follow Critics at Large wherever you get your podcasts.
People. This collection is SO FUNNY and SO DARK. It's unlike any other writing. Whether you've read it or are considering diving in after the book was selected as one of the best of the century, listen in as Kimberly helps understand how this woman pulls it OFF.
PopaHALLics #124 "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Pop, Love, & Understanding?Multiverse mayhem, bodice-ripping romance, and female comedians! Dueling Joel Edgertons! Music by a rising young singer/songwriter and a crafty popsmith of old! Steve and Kate return with a little something for everyone. Streaming:"The Boys in the Boat," Prime. George Clooney directed this fact-based movie about the University of Washington rowing team's quest to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Joel Edgerton plays their coach."Dark Matter," Apple TV+. A college professor (Edgerton again) finds himself abducted into an alternate version of his life in this sci-fi thriller. Can he find his way back to his family and save them from, in essence, himself?"Loot," Apple TV+. Season 2 finds Maya Rudolph's super-rich character still ineptly trying to do good. The comedy has more of a focus this time on side characters, who turn out to be weird in a funny way."Hacks," Max. In this smart, blistering, yet intimate comedy, legendary Vegas comedian (Jean Smart) is paired with an entitled, unemployable young writer (Hannah Einbinder) in the hopes of revitalizing both's careers."Bridgerton," Netflix. Season 3 of Shonda Rimes' period bodice-ripper finds possible romance between dweeb-turned-hunk Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and secret gossip columnist Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).Books:"Night Train" and "All My Colors" by David Quantick. An Emmy-winning TV writer ("Veep") writes clever horror novels. "All My Colors" is like a great lost "Twilight Zone" episode: When no one else remembers a bestselling book, a writer with no talent churns it out—and bad things start happening. In the surreal, gory "Night Train," a woman wakes up on a train speeding through the darkness with no idea who she is or what she's doing there. She heads for the front of the train, with each railroad car more nightmarish than the last.Music:Our hosts are listening to very different pop artists. Kate's enjoying breakout singer/songwriter Chappel Roan ("Pink Pony Club," "Femininomenon"), while Steve's humming Nick Lowe tunes like "Cruel to Be Kind" and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, & Understanding" thanks to a reissue of his 1979 LP "Labour of Lust." Both are on our latest playlist!Click through the links to watch, read, and listen to what we're talking about.

Our entry in our series “What's So Funny?” this week is the third in the famous (or infamous) Cornetto Trilogy from Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright. We got together on the first day of 2023 to review our top books of 2022 and we're already busy reading books to discuss this year. David Sipress, a dreamer and obsessive drawer living with his Upper West Side family in the age of JFK and Sputnik, goes hazy when it comes to the ceaselessly imparted lessons-on-life from his meticulous father and the angsty expectations of his migraine-prone mother. With wry and brilliantly observed prose, Sipress paints his hapless place in the family, from the time he is tricked by his unreliable older sister into rocketing his pet turtle out his twelfth-floor bedroom window, to the moment he walks away from a Harvard PhD program in Russian history to begin his life as a professional cartoonist. His book is "What's So Funny?: A Cartoonist's Memoir."
David and I discuss What's So Funny? A Cartoonist's Memoir, how he started creating cartoons for The New Yorker, using cartoons to process his emotions, how writing this book was cathartic and helped him better understand his parents, trying to connect to people through feelings, creating the cover, and much more. David's recommended reads are: The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life by John le Carre Powers and Thrones: A New History of the Middle Ages by Dan Jones Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips Bruno, Chief of Police series by Martin Walker Support the podcast by becoming a Page Turner on Patreon.
