In 2013, Shane Devine felt a creative itch that needed to be scratched. Initially, he just wanted to record some songs that bopped around in his head, but his first album was well received and performance opportunities came knocking. With that success, Devine formed the Opera Bell Band, a music and comedy group that embraces silly humor, catchy lyrics and, most recently, plant science. Their latest album “A Salute to Corn” was commissioned by Missouri Botanical Garden. Devine and his bandmate and wife, Kristina DeYong, share their creative process, the close relationships among the bandmates and the science behind their “corny” music.

In this episode, host Zach Urness talks about one of Oregon's great river trips — the Wallowa-Grande Ronde River. The float trip, which includes segments of both rivers, can be done as a day-trip or a multi-day adventure into a beautiful roadless wilderness of northeast Oregon. The river is known for being fairly friendly with rapids that are not super challenging, but it does require understanding the river, campsites and details like shuttles and water levels. There, there's absolutely nothing else for high school kids or teenagers or even young adults to have a night out on the town with a date.” The film is a postcard of American life and a love story to a part of it that seems to be fading. August Wilson is one of America's most-produced playwrights. He's best known for his 10-play series, the “Century Cycle,” which includes “Fences” and “Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.” While many of his plays are set in Pittsburgh, Wilson began his career as a playwright at Penumbra Theatre in St. Paul. One of his earlier plays in the cycle, "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," is running at Penumbra through June 21.MPR News arts reporter Jacob Aloi spoke with director of the production and Penumbra founder Lou Bellamy about the play and Wilson's legacy in Minnesota.

Josh Hancock, Danielle Doelling and Anna Soens are all athletes based in Bend who suffered life-changing accidents, leaving them with varied levels of spinal cord injury. All three of these athletes spent their lives before injury participating in extreme outdoor sports. The film “Adapted” follows these athletes on their journeys to get back to the activities they love, and finding new accessible ways to access the outdoors.  Paul Bikis, the director of the film, noticed the threads through all of their stories, and created a feature-length film showcasing the Hancock, Doellning and Soens’ unique journeys through their respective outdoor feats. “Adapted” premieres in Bend on April 23rd, and in Portland on April 30th. “Think Out Loud” spoke with Anna Soens ahead of her Paralympic debut in Milan-Cortina earlier this year. We’re joined by director Paul Bikis, and athletes Josh Hancock and Danielle Doelling to talk about the new film.
