Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 3, identify fraud is the featured crime. This is Will the Real John Shady Please Stand Up? by TG WolffAbout Identify FraudIdentity Fraud, also called Identity Theft, is when someone uses your personal or financial information without your permission. This information can include names and addresses, Credit card or Social Security numbers, Bank account numbers, Medical insurance account numberIn February 2024, the Federal Trade Commission released data showing consumers reported losing more than $10 billion to fraud in 2023. This was a 14% increase over 2022. Investment scams led the fraud category with $4.6 billion, a 21% increase. The second highest loss was to imposture schemes with $2.7 billion reported. There are several ways that scammers can steal your identity, including in person, online, through social media, and by phone. Scammers may:Steal your wallet or purse to get ID, credit, or bank cardsGo through your trash to retrieve bank statements or tax documentsInstall skimmers at ATM machines, cash registers, and fuel pumps to digitally steal information from your bank cardGet personal information from your phone when you use public Wi-FiUse “phishing” to get information from you through fraudulent email, texts, or phone callsLook through your social media accounts to find identifying information in posts or photos. Or they may ask you for personal information in online quizzes and surveys. To report identity theft, contact:The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-438-4338The three major credit reporting agencies. Ask them to place fraud alerts and a credit freeze on your accounts. The fraud department at your credit card issuers, bank, and other places where you have accountshttps://www.usa.gov/identity-thefthttps://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/02/nationwide-fraud-losses-top-10-billion-2023-ftc-steps-efforts-protect-publicABOUT TG WolffLike you, I'm not one thing. I'm a writer, an engineer, a wife, and a mother. What is first on the list depends on the day. Beyond the title I claim, I'm a person who loves learning and thoroughly enjoys a good puzzle, is creative and gets bored easily. I hold a BS in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and an MS in Civil Engineering from Cleveland State University, which gives me absolutely no background in writing, but I do it anyway. Writing mysteries and engineering isn't as different as you'd think. Both require using logic and process to get from a starting problem to a solution.Find me at

Shortly after returning from South East Asia, Dan was hired by DAV in 1974 as National Service Officer. Through his career he was assigned to many locations to include offices in New York, Boson, Cleveland, Ohio, and Providence, RI. Early on in his career when Dan was in Cleveland he was asked to assist in a new study where they studied the effects that Vietnam has on Veterans, especially during the years Dan had served. After about a year of working alongside Dr. John Wilson and the staff at Cleveland State University interviewing a lot of veterans Dr. Wilson came out with the diagnosis of PTSD. The interesting part about that was the VA still didn't recognize the condition. DAV had to legislatively add that not only to the DSM 3 for psychiatric diagnoses but also had to get legislatively activated within VA's compensation rules.

Citizens Not Politicians aims to end gerrymandering in Ohio. Plus, OEA members' power to shape our state's future.

Ohio's system for creating legislative districts is broken. When new maps are drawn every ten years, the party in power can manipulate the lines so they can hold onto their power by picking and choosing the voters they want to pack into their own districts, rather than letting Ohio's voters have a real voice in the statehouse or on Capitol Hill. It's time to change that. And the Citizens Not Politicians ballot initiative will change it by ending gerrymandering in Ohio once and for all, if it's approved by voters in the fall. As retired Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor and former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Yvette McGee Brown tell us in the Public Education Matters Season 4 finale, there's a good reason the citizen-led initiative has so much bipartisan support. We also hear from OEA President Scott DiMauro about the important role OEA members can play in this year's elections to help shape the public education landscape in our state. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE AMENDMENT | The Citizens Not Politicians Amendment will end gerrymandering by empowering citizens, not politicians, to draw fair districts using an open and transparent process. It will:Create the 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission made up of Democratic, Republican, and Independent citizens who broadly represent the different geographic areas and demographics of the state. Ban current or former politicians, political party officials and lobbyists from sitting on the Commission.Require fair and impartial districts by making it unconstitutional to draw voting districts that discriminate against or favor any political party or individual politician.Require the commission to operate under an open and independent process. Click here to get involved in the campaign or to read the full amendment for yourself. Among them is Ohio State Bar's highest honor, The Ohio Bar Medal, for ‘unusually meritorious service to the legal profession, the community and humanity.'  She is the longest-serving statewide elected woman in Ohio history. Chief Justice O'Connor has led significant reforms and improvements in the Ohio judicial system and is a leader nationally. Her commitment to modernization of the courts across the state is unmatched. Since 2015, she has endowed Ohio local courts with almost 40 million dollars to add and enhance technology. This funding has increased access to justice for litigants, defendants, and the public. The foresight of providing funds to local courts for technology made Ohio a leader in its ability to continue to administer justice through the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Chief Justice O'Connor has worked to improve fairness in the judicial system. She was selected by her peers in the Conference of Chief Justices to co-chair the National Task Force on Fines, Fees, and Bail Practices in 2016. The Task Force issued a report that provides judges, lawyers, and court personnel guidance in the law related to fines, fees, and bail as well as best practices. In Ohio, she has advocated for reform to ensure people are not held in jail prior to resolution of their case simply because they cannot afford bail. She strongly advocated for the creation of a statewide criminal sentencing database and the implementation of a uniform sentencing entry to establish standardized data for felony sentencing. She believes that judges, lawyers, and the public will benefit by being informed about the pattern of criminal sentencing in Ohio and the need for uniformity to insure a fair justice system across the state.  She created a task force on conviction integrity to look at policies and practices to determine equity, fairness, and advise the judiciary and the legislature. From 1985 to 1993, O'Connor served as Magistrate, Summit County Probate Court. From 1993 to 1995, she served as Judge, Summit County Court of Common Pleas, and was elected as administrative judge of the court. Serving in local and trial courts, she learned that many of society's most difficult problems are manifested in the legal issues that come before the courts. As chief justice, it became clear that the emerging opioid abuse and its impact on court dockets needed a more collaborative response across state lines. An eight-state initiative to combat the opioid epidemic was created in which information sharing and best practices were not constrained by state boundaries. She has increased the role of specialized dockets, to bring community resources together to provide an opportunity for a second chance, where warranted. She holds trial courts in esteem for the challenging work they do and the opportunities they create. Chief Justice O'Connor left the Summit County bench to serve her community as Summit County Prosecuting Attorney from 1995 to 1999 and was honored by Cleveland State University with the Distinguished Alumnae Award for Civic Achievement and received numerous other awards. In 1999, she was elected with Governor Bob Taft to serve as Ohio Lieutenant Governor and Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. After 9-11, she became the state's first liaison with the newly formed U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security. As Ohio's leader in Homeland Security, she chaired the State of Ohio Security Task Force and the State Building Security Review Committee. Chief Justice O'Connor joined the Court in January 2003, was re-elected as an associate justice in 2008 and elected twice as Chief Justice in 2010 and 2016. She was unopposed for reelection as chief justice in 2016. Since her retirement in December of 2022, she has been a leader for the effort in Ohio to amend the Ohio Constitution to create a redistricting commission with members selected from the citizens of our state. There will be no politicians or lobbyists eligible for appointment to the commission. The goal is to end gerrymandering and establish fair districts for both the Ohio Legislature and our congressional districts. The amendment will b...

Dr Paul Malchesky, with a Master's degree in Chemistry and a Doctorate in Engineering, has been working with apheresis since the 1970's. This is a blood filtration or ‘cleaning' therapy we offer at Neuroveda Health as plasmapheresis (also called plasma exchange, PLEX and TPE (total or therapeutic plasma exchange)). There's been a lot of recent excitement regarding treatment of Long-COVID and as a ‘biohack' for longevity, but the truth is that it's been nearly half a century since the FDA approved this therapy for auto-immune and neurodegenerative conditions. The technology has come a long way and Dr Malchesky has been there the whole time. Of note, Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, also recognizes the value of detox and blood cleansing, making plasmapheresis a type of ‘rakta moksha'. This is a modern tool with ancient roots, our favorite kind of therapy. Today, we get into the history and mechanics to describe what this therapy is doing and how broad it's use can be. We discuss: ·     3:30 What is apheresis? ·     4:19 What is the history of apheresis? ·     11:56 What is in blood? What are the components of blood? ·     13.20 About anti-coagulation ·     15:53 Ayurvedic use of blood cleansing called ‘rakta moksa' ·     18:06 Dr Malchesky's personal history with apheresis starting with 1972; Reporting up to 40 diseases treated by 1981. ·     24:40 Comparison of dialysis vs plasmapheresis filtration ·     29:00 Late 70's/ early 80's, efforts to identify the specific proteins associated with certain diseases; findings and curiosity about cryoproteins- precipitates triggered by cold. ·     36:57 Treatment to remove high cholesterol to prevent atherosclerosis. ·     40:29 Description of the last 15 years of apheresis: applications & guidelines have really diversified by geography (centripetal in US & German; membrane for Japan), technology and disease state ·     42:58 Safety of this procedure ·     43:52 Difficulties with this procedure are most typically associated with venous access and sometimes blood pressure changes and/or anti-coagulant use ·     44:40 Recognition that the macromolecules produced as ‘toxic' can present in every silo of medicine: oncology, rheumatology, neurology, and therefore, also make sense to use these treatments for longevity & anti-aging ·     49:43 In studying the toxins removed, it's evident that these toxins removed impair cellular function, so removal can allow cells to perform more of their regular functions. ·     51:08 The goal at Neuroveda Health is that plasmapheresis is part of a larger medical and wellness program to renovate the health from the ground up. ·     51:38 Discussion of Lp(a). ·     53:24 Designing clinical trials using historical experience of the questions and initial clinical trial endeavors with rheumatoid arthritis patients BIO: Dr. Paul Malchesky holds a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from St. Francis University, M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University and in Chemical Engineering from Cleveland State University and a Doctorate in Engineering from Cleveland State University. He is President of the International Center for Artificial Organs and Transplantation (ICAOT) and consults for the chemical and medical industries. He has published extensively nearly 500 publications, holds 35 patents, and was co-editor of four books on apheresis. He is active in various professional societies and is the former Editor-in-Chief of Artificial Organs and Managing Editor of Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis. He is a Past-President of the International Society for Apheresis. He is an Elected Fellow to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and The Ohio Academy of Science.  Recently he developed the web site icaot.org that discusses the history of the International Center for Artificial Organs & Transplantation and includes Milestones in the field and invites contributions to its Virtual Collection.

I've been a huge proponent of the Cleveland creative community since starting this podcast — seriously, go back to the early early episodes — and Kyra Wells is continuing the legacy of hard work, perseverance, and great design that only comes from the 216. Kyra is a true creative professional, whether it's through her own studio Seven Pillars Design Co., teaching at Cuyahoga Community College, leading campaigns as a creative marketing designer at American Greetings, or through her community efforts as co-president of AIGA Cleveland. We talked about both her day job and her freelance work, and she shared how both experiences have shaped her voice and find her calling as a designer. She also told her story of growing up in Cleveland, attending Tri-C before then going to Cleveland State University, and even spoke a bit about the role of AIGA for the modern designer.Kyra's enthusiasm and passion for supporting young designers and helping them overcome self-doubt is truly inspiring, so if you're looking for a little pep talk at the start of the year, then you're in the right place. “The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection” is one of the most important contributions to the corpus of design history, and I'm so glad this week to have the book's managing editor, Anne H. Berry, on Revision Path to talk about it. I caught up with her while she's on sabbatical from Cleveland State University, where she's an associate professor in the department of art and design. Our conversation began with a discussion about the state of education and teaching over the past few years, and what it means for students and the general culture. Of course, we also talked about the book, and Anne shared how the super team of editors and contributors came together through the power of a shared vision. Anne also spoke on her 2021 exhibit, Ongoing Matter: Democracy, Design and the Mueller Report.Thank you to Anne for helping push the conversations around Black design forward!LinksAnne H.
