Dave Tough: Award-Winning Producer / Engineer / Educator (Empire, Glee, CSI)Embark on an auditory adventure with Dave Tough, a man whose life is a melody composed of jazz drum beats and executive decisions. As Jay's guest, Dave shares the symphony of his career, highlighting his transition from the rhythms of drumming to the boardrooms of the music industry's elite in Los Angeles. He offers us an intimate look at his evolution into a producing and engineering virtuoso in Nashville, reflecting on collaborations with legends like Alan Sides and Bruce Swedien, and his own battle with serious health issues, including a heart transplant.Dive deep with us into the heart of music creation, where Dave lends his expertise on the transformative power of artist development, the 'Bluebird Cafe approach' to songwriting, and the delicate interplay between crafting a hit and capturing an artist's true essence. The conversation takes a turn through the process of selecting the perfect studio environment, revealing how the choice between the grandeur of Oceanway Nashville and the tranquility of a home setup can dramatically influence an artist's creative journey. Dave's insights bridge the gap between technical mastery and the personal touch that defines the magic of music production.Amidst the tales of musical prowess, we reveal the sobering realities and profound gratitude of a life sustained by the gift of organ donation. Dave's story isn't just a chronicle of professional triumph; it's an inspiring narrative of human resilience, an intimate encounter with mortality, and a celebration of second chances. Swing to Bop records made by members of Woody Herman's First Herd in 1944-46 . . groups led by Harris (with Conte Candoli, Alvin Burroughs and Phillips), Berman (Harris, Phillips, Serge Chaloff) and Phillips (Neal Hefti, Harris, Aaron Sachs and Bill Shine) with a more or less steady rhythm section of Ralph Burns, Billy Bauer, Chubby Jackson and either Dave Tough or Don Lamond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support
Great small groups using Woody Herman's musicians (Conte Candoli, Bill Harris, Flip Phillips, Billy Bauer, Tony Aless, Arnold Fishkind, Dave Tough, Shelly Manne, Mel Zelnick, Frank Socolow and Emmett Carls) and some guests including Howard McGhee and Denzil Best. These sides are on the cusp of Bebop, done for Keynote, Prestige and Esquire in 1945, 47, 48 and 49. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support
The Benny Goodman Sextet (actually a septet) performed with the big band during the second half of Charlie Christian's tenure with the band in 1940 until he had to leave in the summer of 1941 due to ill health. With Cootie Williams, Georgie Auld, Artie Bernstein and a mix of Count Basie, Kenny Kersey, Milt Raskin and Johnny Guarnieri on piano and Dave Tough, Harry Jaeger and Nick Fatool on drums, the small group had superior jazz talent as well as great arrangements built on the riffs of Christian and his electric guitar. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support
Some oddly constructed small groups featured by Goodman on his regular radio broadcasts in 1939. This was the time between when Gene Krupa and his replacement Dave Tough left and Charlie Christian appeared and Goodman was obviously trying different things, including using Leonard Ware and George Rose on electric guitar. Also unique was a duo between Goodman and bass player Artie Bernstein on "Tea For Two." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support

The first of the jazz albums presented George Avakian when he was still a college student! This one was devoted to the white musicians active on the Chicago Jazz scene in the 1920's who were still playing in 1940. These were players who were teenagers in the 1920's and who haunted places like the Lincoln Gardens to hear the music played by great New Orleans players. Sessions led by Eddie Condon, Jimmy McPartland and George Wettling and featuring Max Kaminsky, Pee Wee Russell, Bud Freeman, Boyce Brown, Dave Tough and Joe Marsala demonstrate how the style grew. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support
