This week, we talk to legendary actor, musician, performance artist, and writer ANN MAGNUSON (Bongwater, The Hunger, Making Mr. Right, Cabin Boy, Pyramid Club, Club 57) about the influential cinema jazz documentary Jazz On A Summer's Day.  We discuss the performances in the film (including Thelonious Monk, Anita O' Day, Chico Hamilton, Eric Dolphy to name a few performers), what it was like for Ann to inhabit Anita O'Day for the audio book of her autobiography, first impressions of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Ann's programing at the legendary NYC Club 57, Ann's new song 'Ghost Cat' with producer Don Dixon, her early life in West Virginia, D.I.Y. & Ann's SurRURALism techniques, success in the underground being a dirty word, the return of Vulcan Death Grip, being a professional walk-a-thoner, photographer & filmmaker Bert Stern, how the film brings a visceral sense of childhood for Ann, how Stern made the whole project happen with his own equipment and financing, Ann's parents and the dry Jazz club scene in West Virginia, filming Making Mr. Right and the new wave sensibility of the 80s, how Monk's performance is presented in the film, Chris scats the Anita O' Day finale of ‘Tea For Two' from his memory of repeated listening of the film at his video store, the white privilege throughout in the film, midnight Mahalia Jackson performances, how protest music is needed now more than ever and Ann reads from Anita O'day's memoir about the performance that was filmed for this movie and how it changed O'Days life. So let's never sing the same song the same way twice on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!ANN MAGNUSON:https://annmagnuson.com/https://annmagnuson.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-catVULCAN DEATH GRIP:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2_dWSpDXJEREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 6:18; Galatians 3:26"I'm ready for my birthday adventure, Grandma!" Emily said. "Where are we going?""You'll see. But you'll need this." Grandma handed Emily a big box.Emily tore off the paper, opened the box, and gasped. "A dress?"Grandma nodded. "You'll look so pretty. Go get changed, dear."Emily put on the dress and eagerly followed Grandma out to the car. After a short drive, Grandma said, "Here we are.""Is this a mansion?" Emily asked as they climbed the stairs to the front door.Grandma grinned. "It is a mansion. Long ago different families called it home. Now it's a Victorian tea room.""Is this why we're all dressed up?" Emily asked. Grandma nodded. Once inside, Emily whispered, "Everything's so fancy. And it's so quiet."A woman in a long black dress greeted them. "Hello, I'm Rachel. How may I help you?""My granddaughter and I have reservations.""You must be Emily, the birthday girl. May I say you look like a princess in your lovely dress." Rachel smiled. "Please follow me." Rachel led them to their table. "I see you've requested the birthday tea for two with lunch. Excellent choice! I'll bring out your tea first.""Rachel's so nice," Emily said. "I do feel like a princess in my dress with all the beautiful things here.""Well, Emily, whether you're here, on a soccer field, or anywhere else, you are a princess," Grandma said. Emily looked puzzled. "You are a child of the King of kings," Grandma told her. "God is your heavenly Father.""And since He's King over everything, that makes me a princess?""That's right. The Bible tells us many times that we are God's children because we trust in Jesus. He died for our sins so we could be forgiven and become part of God's family."As Emily pondered that, Rachel returned carrying a teapot with yellow rosebuds painted on it. She poured Emily's tea. "Would you like sugar or honey?""Honey, please," Emily said."Sweets for the sweet princess."Emily's eyes sparkled as she glanced at Grandma. "Rachel, can I tell you something? It's not this fancy dress that makes me a princess. I'm a princess because I'm a child of God, who's the King of kings!""I could tell." Rachel smiled. "I'm a child of God too!" –Lynda BoucherHow About You?Are you a child of God and a member of His family? When we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we become children of God. As His children, our heavenly Father gives us the Holy Spirit to guide and help us as we walk with Him. If you haven't yet trusted in Jesus, do it today, and you will become a child of the King. Justin talks to Robbie Honey; a Zimbabwe born botanist cum florist cum plants-man with a fascination for flowers and scentsThe Tea for Two series was created over the Coronavirus Lockdowns of 2020 and 2021; a moment when we desperately wanted to have someone round for a cup of tea and a slice of cake and were missing those previously taken for granted moments of human connection. A moment too where we wanted to be inspired and to learn and to do something that wasn't work, or just existing. Used to so much exposure to the brilliant minds of the interior design world, I felt stagnant and yes, like all of us did, a little lonely. Used to so much exposure to the brilliant minds of the interior design world, I felt stagnant and yes, like all of us did, a little lonely. So I decided to reach out to my network and invite them to join me for a virtual Tea for To where we discussed all things design, and life (in lockdown and outside of it). Over the series I talk to a broad range of brilliant and bold designers, artists and makers from across the globe and who impart a little of their expert knowledge and invariable humour. The series was originally formatted as instagram lives but we have taken those videos and turned them into an audio series, if you would like to watch the series they can be found on our Instagram or YouTube pages. We took ourselves off to Hawthorne Park in Brisbane's east, and set up the card table in the location that inspired the Bluey episode Cafe. Keen Bluey observers may also recognise the park from Season 1's Wagon Ride episode. Early in 'Cafe' Bandit can be heard saying to Fido that "they're a pain to maintain", and we reckon that could be a reference to the Heeler's Queenslander house - remember that bit from Hammerbarn where the gutter falls down! So we spoke to one of Queensland's most awarded heritage architects, Andrew Ladlay for a bit of Queenslander 101, and discover a bit more about this iconic Brisbane house design. And when your friend drops a bombshell and lets you know that her daughter was the star of 'Cafe', you just have to find out a bit more about what it's like lending your voice to the Bluey-verse. NB - keeping with Ludo Studios tradition of not crediting the child actors on the show, we have not identified her - we'll just call her Annie. We'll also discover what there is to get up to in the beautiful riverside suburbs of Hawthorne and Bulimba. Bluey's Brisbane is the podcast that explores the real life world of your favourite Heeler family.
