fWotD Episode 2952: 1880 Republican National Convention Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 4 June 2025, is 1880 Republican National Convention. The 1880 Republican National Convention convened from June 2 to June 8, 1880, at the Interstate Exposition Building in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Delegates nominated James A. Garfield of Ohio and Chester A. Arthur of New York as the official Republican Party candidates for president and vice president in the 1880 presidential election.Of the 14 men in contention for the Republican nomination, the three strongest leading up to the convention were Ulysses S. Grant, James G. Blaine, and John Sherman. Grant had served two terms as president from 1869 to 1877, and was seeking an unprecedented third term in office. He was backed by the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party, which supported political machines and patronage. Blaine was a senator and former representative from Maine who was backed by the Half-Breed faction of the Republican Party. Sherman, the brother of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, was serving as Secretary of the Treasury under President Rutherford B. Hayes. A former senator from Ohio, he was backed by delegates who did not support the Stalwarts or Half-Breeds.With 379 votes required to obtain the nomination, on the first ballot Grant received 304 votes, Blaine 285, and Sherman 93. Balloting continued for several days without producing a nominee. After the thirty-fifth ballot, Blaine and Sherman switched their support to a new "dark horse", James Garfield. On the next ballot, Garfield won the nomination with 399 votes, 93 more than Grant. Garfield's Ohio delegation chose Chester A. Arthur, a Stalwart, as Garfield's running mate. Arthur won the vice presidential nomination with 468 votes, and the longest-ever Republican National Convention adjourned. The Garfield–Arthur Republican ticket narrowly defeated Democrats Winfield Scott Hancock and William Hayden English in the 1880 presidential election. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:40 UTC on Wednesday, 4 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 1880 Republican National Convention on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Olivia.
Tough economic conditions have forced the closure of dozens of capital city hospitality stalwarts, but some green shoots are starting to show through. One success story is a new bakery, which has opened four stores in ten months. Volco is the creation of businessman and former professional tennis player Tony Parun, along with his son Anthony. They started by rebranding their German bakery, Brezelmania, in Kelburn midway through last year. They've since opened up three more stores throughout the city, each with slightly different menus. The latest is only a few weeks old, offering a full-blown brunch menu alongside their wide selection of pastries and pies. Business lead Anthony Parun and head chef Kirran Buckland speak to Kathryn.

What does it mean to be a Stalwart? In history, it's just a name for political machine pros seeking jobs and being corrupt. But it was more. While telling how Chester Arthur became the nation's most famous fired civil servant, we explain politics in the 19th century. The real battles then were inside the party. "He eats Mumbai cricket, he sleeps Mumbai cricket and he breathes Mumbai cricket." The description fits Milind Rege, a stalwart! A prolific allrounder and a multiple Ranji Trophy champion. Rege recovered from a heart ailment to return to lead Mumbai. After retiring early in quest of a prospering corporate career, Rege thrived as a selector. The Sullivanians:Through a Blue Window ((c) 2019 shelley feinerman's Podcast
Initially, the group was a vibrant blend of energy—artists, musicians, writers, actors, politics, and interpersonal drama. Serena left the apartment, and Sandra Aguilar, the only minority in the group, was added to the mix. In the group, there was an elite hierarchy among the trainees, the therapists of the institute, and the people they dated, who were given preferential placement in the burgeoning Marxist classes. In this episode, you'll learn about the conflict created by Annie's decision to hire and then fire Steve Berman, a non-Sullivanian, as an instructor of Intro to Marxism based on the directive of Annie's therapist. This is another example of Annie's intractability and a foreshadowing of events to come as heard in the Aug 30, 2023, Through a Blue Window( getting out) episode. The episode takes an intimate and harrowing turn as it recounts the dictate given to me by my therapist after a call from my sister, the support I did receive, and the emotional wasteland I still can find myself wandering in a lifetime later. In the immediate aftermath of leaving the Sullivanians, in the quiet of my new apartment, I wrote an eulogy for my mother. This was the first step in helping me shape the trajectory of my life and 45 years later I still turn to it when I feel her presence and profound absence. Join me as I navigate these deeply human experiences, with insights that may resonate with your journey facing the complexities of life and relationships. The complete documentary Through a BlueWindow can be seen on my youtube channel shellfein1. There's just nothing better than taking a deep dive with a player that has been through the fire, and Dan Evans fits that bill. In August Dan came out of a six match losing streak and won his second ATP tournament in Washington DC, defeating Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov en route to the championship that got him to his career high ranking of 21 in the world. The flashy shotmaker followed up the DC win with a virtuoso performance in a losing effort to Carlitos Alcaraz in the 3rd round of the US Open, wowing the crowd and Carlitos, himself. Just a couple weeks later he put the British Davis Cup Team on his back coming off the mat twice to lead his team to victory over France in one of the moist electrifying scenes we've seen all year. It was a triumphant moment for a player that had been banned from the tour for a failed drug test six years ago, in the prime of his career- and we discussed it all.
