Conrad Black, Canadian Politics, Mr. Carney's Government, and Regional Challenges Conrad Black discusses the challenges facing Mr. Carney's new Canadian government, particularly the unrest in Alberta. Carney's extreme green views threaten Alberta's oil and ranching economy, leading to a significant separatist movement that could see the province join the United States if its energy exports aren't facilitated. Black notes that Carney has yet to reveal his plans to address this or the historical cultural and political challenges posed by Quebec, a wealthy province with aspirations for independence. Carney has been robust on national security, agreeing with President Trump that Canada needs increased defense spending. 1920 DIDSBURY ALBERTA

Have you felt a pull to starting and running your group private practice? Are you ready to trade the security of being an employee for someone else's business for the freedom of being your own boss? In today's episode, I speak with Dakota about why (and how) she stopped working for other people and started working for herself. She enjoyed being in a group private practice so much that she wanted to start her own! Join us today to hear more about how she made the transition, how it's going now, and about an easy trick you can use to boost your Psychology Today profile ranking online! MEET DAKOTA Dakota (she/her) is a registered social worker with a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology who owns Down to Earth Counselling and Consultation in London, Ontario. As a neurodivergent, queer, cisgender woman and White settler based in London, Ontario, she offers relational, client-centered psychotherapy to children, youth, young adults, and couples. Dakota values authenticity and connection, showing up as a human first and a therapist second. Her work focuses on fostering meaningful therapeutic relationships and supporting clients in deepening their connections with themselves and others. Learn more about Dakota on her practice website, LinkedIn, Psychology Today, and Instagram profiles. In this episode: Becoming a therapist Opening her own private practice Peer consulting with other therapists How to boost your Psychology Today profile Dakota's advice for listeners Becoming a therapist Once Dakota realized that she wanted to spend more time working in a clinical setting, she went back to school to become a therapist. Opening her own private practice Now, Dakota has launched her private practice and intends to expand it into a group practice. Dakota has surprised herself with enjoying the business side of running a private practice more than she thought she would. This aspect of being a private practice owner, the fact that you can do multiple things throughout the week, makes it more interesting, nuanced, and diverse. ‘It's nice to do therapy for a bit, run the business for a bit, the podcast for a bit, mix it up!' - Jules Smith Peer consulting with other therapists One of Dakota's values, upon which she founded her Canadian private practice, is connection, and that includes the connection she has with her clients and also with her fellow clinicians and practice owners. Dakota uses Instagram mostly to connect with other therapists, and also for her marketing efforts. How to boost your Psychology Today profile About once a week, Dakota will edit something small on her Psychology Today profile, which boosts it on webpage searches. It's not the only thing you need to do to get your marketing schedule working well! However, when you often edit and update your socials, it shows Google and other platforms that your website or listing is active, and Google favours that. When client conversions are slow, Dakota will take the time that she would have spent seeing clients into marketing her practice, broadening its reach, and increasing her efforts to find new clients in the upcoming days or weeks. Dakota's advice for listeners The growth that comes with starting a private practice often requires embracing uncertainty and learning curves! Just in time for Passover, Fern Levitt has a message of freedom for Canadian audiences—about elephants. On April 11, her new documentary, Lucy: The Stolen Lives of Elephants, will begin streaming nationwide on CBC Gem. The film casts a harsh spotlight on nearly two dozen elephants owned by parks and zoos in Canada, most notably Lucy, of the Edmonton Valley Zoo, whom protesters have called to be released in recent years due to her age and declining health. To make this film, Levitt spent three years reporting on what she and others believe are irrefutable animal rights abuses. And it isn't the first time she's done it: her last film focused on the mistreatment of sled dogs in Alaska's iconic Iditarod race. After learning that some sled dogs were gassed to death, she couldn't help but draw comparisons to the Holocaust, which had been a previous artistic focus of hers. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Levitt joins Ellin Bessner to explain why she went undercover to document the treatment of elephants around the world, including Lucy and the approximately 20 living at Ontario's African Lion Safari—whose management she says has since threatened to sue her. Just a week into the job, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet the Governor General - to dissolve Parliament and call a snap election. Journalist Craig McCulloch spoke to Corin Dann from Vancouver.
Canadian pride reached a fever pitch after the NHL 4 Nations Cup last month and it hasn't showed any signs of slowing down since. Sales of the Canadian flags are up. American liquor and beer have been pulled off the shelves in stores throughout the country. “Elbows Up”, a war cry and tribute to Gordie Howe's signature defensive move, has been trending on social media. But in a country that, according to polls, saw declining national pride for decades, what is our national identity? And how do you build a forward-looking and also inclusive, patriotic society? We wade through the good, the bad and the ugly of Canadian patriotism with David Moscrop, a freelance journalist and political scientist, and Jeet Heer, author and national affairs correspondent at The Nation. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

Friday Focus provides listeners with a focused, half-hour masterclass on the big issues, events and trends driving the news and current events. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. Rudyard and Janice begin today's show trying to make sense of Trump's tariff policy. Rudyard argues that Trump is not concerned with stock market losses if it means keeping promises to his voter base and reworking the American economy so it benefits blue collar workers, but tariffs are not going to bring their jobs back and will end up making everyone poorer. On the second half of the show Ruydyard and Janice turn to Canadian politics and the election of Mark Carney as Liberal Party leader, thus becoming Prime Minister of Canada. As much as we criticize politics in the US, here we have a PM who does not have a parliamentary seat, was not elected by the Canadian public, and is now representing Canada on the world stage. Meanwhile Canada's premiers are stepping in to negotiate trade deals with Washington while Ottawa takes a backseat. What is happening here? Canadian documentary producer Igal Hecht says he hates his new Oct. 7 film, The Killing Roads. The documentary retraces the final moments of 250 Israelis who were slaughtered by Hamas terrorists along highways 232 and 34, near Gaza. Hecht also feels this is the best work he has ever done. The film releases to the public online, for free, on Oct. 1. An in-person preview screening is set for Toronto on Sept. 30. The Toronto-based filmmaker made the movie with his cameraman Lior Cohen because he felt not enough attention has been paid to these highway victims, who met their ends in their cars, on bicycles or on foot. The victims were weekend campers, athletes, and many music festival-goers fleeing for their lives along the 70-kilometre stretch of highway between Sderot and Israel's southern border with Gaza. It's also where Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, was wounded and then kidnapped into Gaza. The Killing Roads pieces together new interviews with survivors of Oct. 7, bereaved relatives and first responders, along with hours of video taken on that day—by both the terrorists themselves and their victims. It also includes graphic, never-before-seen video from Israeli ambulance dashcam recordings, although Hecht decided to blur the victim's faces out of respect for those involved. Igal Hecht joins this episode of The CJN Daily to share why his film is different than the catalogue of Oct. 7 documentaries out so far, and what he hopes this Canadian-made movie will accomplish. What we talked about Learn more about new The Killing Roads movie and watch it for free online beginning October 1 at 8 p.m. EDT.
