Has it really been over a year since we've covered D&D 3E? It sure has. So, Kendra's bringing us everything about 4E, why it's considered to have "radical" changes, and why you either love it or hate it. We also definitely didn't forget that it's the last Thursday of the month and we should be reviewing a movie...Music: Eric Skiff - Jumpshot - Resistor Anthems - Available at http://EricSkiff.com/musicSupport the show
I was recently hipped to "Revenge of the Iron Lich" by someone on Discord. It was given extremely high praise and, as it is currently FREE on DriveThruRPG, I thought: what do I have to lose? Join me on a jaunt into a mid-level dungeon from the forgotten edition that was 4E!Show Notes:* Revenge of the Iron Lich on DTRPG: https://hxpr.to/1ihiqwLike this content? Convos with Creative People is a podcast about creative paths and processes. Each episode features interviews with creators of all genres and mediums, and discussions on writing, art, design, marketing, music, podcasting, and more. Hosted by me, Brian LeTendre. In this episode I reach all the way back into the 2008 archives of the Secret Identity podcast, for a conversation with the creator of the Forgotten Realms, Ed Greenwood. Way back in April of 2008, my friends Alana Abbott, Max Saltonstall and I traveled to the Dungeons and Dragon Experience (DDXP) convention, to get a preview of the upcoming 4th edition of Dungeons & Dragons. We got to meet, interview, and play games with some of the architects of 4e, and it was an amazing time. One of the highlights of the show was getting to sit down with the legend himself, Ed Greenwood, the creator of the Forgotten Realms. We got to talk about the Realms being the base setting for the new edition, what was new and different with the Realms in 4e, and some of the projects Ed was working on at the time.Maybe my favorite part of this interview from a creative standpoint, was hearing Ed’s take on the Living Forgotten Realms initiative, and how it contributed to the richness of the stories being told around that world. Fantastic stuff. As I said in the intro for this episode, these old interviews are great to revisit, and provide a time capsule of what was happening at any given point. This time in particular was a very exciting one for D&D and the Forgotten Realms, and it’s fascinating to see what part of WOTC’s plans for 4e came to fruition, what didn’t, and how that informed a lot of what we see with 5e today.Anyway, I hope you enjoy this interview from 2008! James Introcaso sits down with Michael Long, the creator of the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition Facebook group, the co-founder of Tribality, and an all-around amazing human!
HJRP1702 Your Hosts: Stu, Kimi, Stork Show Notes! Alervant writes in with a GMing question about introducing NPCs, DiceOff asks about world building. Hour Eleven asks a thought-provoking question: do we need combat? GM Zack asks for rules heavy system recommendations. and Jonathan tells us of his DnD4E experiences and gives us a horror story.
HJRP1111 Your hosts: Stu, Stork, Tyler and Curtis If you haven't check out Tyler's other podcast, Your Book is Why Daddy Drinks, you should. Each month this intrepid band of podcasts tackle one horrible novel and review it. Hilarity ensues. Show Notes! We welcome Curtis (DT Pints on our forum). We revisit the topic of on-line gaming, the domination of Google + Hangouts, Roll20.net and where on line gaming is going. Rabbiddoggie writes in to discuss how he's rekindled an old campaign with (mostly) new players. Riff writes in to ask which game he should run, considering the fact that his players want to run one, and he wants to run something else. Trent writes in to tell us about Monster Hearts and asks about complicating the PC's lives in a social setting. Yehuda writes in with a question about his Edge of the Empire game. Slye writes in to spend a bit of time defending DnD4e. And Tom the Pedantic writes in to describe how he brought back an old retired PC as an NPC.
HJRP1012 - Growing the Hobby Your hosts: Stu, Tyler, JiB, Gina Show Notes! We discuss growing the hobby, and the party we (hobbyists) can play in that endeavor. Grant from Saving the Game writes in about another reason role-playing stops when combat starts. Jonas writes in to point out that Stu's criticisms of DnD4e's combat length might have to do with a huge playing group, rather than the system. Tom the Pedantic writes in to chime in on changing systems of a campaign mid-game. Michael from Minnesota writes in with a guygasm about Stan Rogers, and may create a game based on Barrett's Privateers (a Stan Rogers tune). Ryan writes in with the opposite of a gaming nightmare, and Drayle88 gives us a pretty horrific gaming nightmare to close out the evening. Our next episode will be Saturday, August 31st, at 8:oopm, live from Gateway 2013. If our internet speed allows, we'll stream it on Google Plus Hangout, which you'll be able to view at happyjacks.org/live.
HJRP0918 Your hosts: Stu, Stork, Gina, Jib Update: The Free RPG Blog has a guide to writing a free RPG. Show Notes! -- First, we discuss crafting a scene in an RPG, as we all consider scenes to be the building blocks of an adventure. Stu goes off on Kickstarter, after hearing about yet another chronically over-due Kickstarter project mentioned on a recent episode of the Bear Swarm Podcast. A summary of said rant is available at the Douchydm.com. Grayson emails about two things: designing your own RPG, when you lack the money to purchase one and avoiding cliches when improvising. For the first question, we suggest the Free RPG Blog, where one can find numerous free RPGs. Ryan writes in to ask us about pacing, as his players have told him his game runs too slow. Adam from Texas asks us about his DM's DnD4e encounters, which he considers blisteringly difficult. MJT chimes in on some pointers for conflict in RPGs. Jayden suggests www.printablepaper.net and generatedpaper.com for some handy on-line resources. He also asked about disparate tech levels in Traveller and how and why they'd be maintained. Mike emails us about a story of a wonderfully defective D20, JFever warns us from playing the WWF RPG and Brad treats us to a gaming nightmare and a gaming success story.
Season 09 Episode 01 Your hosts: Stu, Stork, Jib Tom from Minneapolis emails us about good metagaming, which we discuss. Bullgod discusses accents (how limited travel and a lack of mass electronic communication insulated groups and regions, creating numerous accents) and compliments Stu on his spot-on Retired British Army Officer(tm) accent. Chad writes about his DnD4E game and how to go about bringing a vampire character into the mix. Drayle88 talks about the RPG he's writing and that it's in beta. Tom suggests (in answer to a previous request for a game with DnD flavor without the compexity) DnD Next (ie, 5.0). He finds it to be an improvement on 4E and says combats take much less time.
The Strange Assembly crew talks about printing problems with Emperor Edition, floor rules changes (including prize splitting and cut systems), the new Kotei Pack cards, and more ruminations on DnD4E.
