Poland has one of the world's most vibrant shanty scenes. In 2023, we performed at the Port Pieśni Pracy festival in Tychy, Poland where we were introduced to Marek Szurawski. Marek is a former merchant mariner and journalist who was instrumental in introducing shanties to Poland in the 1980s on his radio program Kliper siedmiu mórz. He still performs regularly as a solo act and with Stare Dzwony ("Old Bells") and we were told he was the 'Oracle of Polish Shanties'.James and Stefan sat down with Marek in the summer of 2022 in Tychy and recorded this interview.⚓︎ Shanties featured:Northwest Passage, by Stan Rogers, arr. and translated into Polish by The SmugglersThe Maid of Amsterdam, trad. arr. by Marek Szurawski⚓︎ Find out more about Pressgang Mutiny here:pressgangmutiny.comfacebook.com/pressgangmutinyTikTok, X, and Instagram: @pressgangmutiny

Chapman dropped out of school in 1966 to pursue playing in a rock and roll band. In 1968, his band, The Bluesmen Revue, signed a recording contract with Columbia Records in the U.S. that saw the release of "Spin the Bottle". The band split up in early 1969 after their record deal ended following a disagreement with their U.S. management company and their dissatisfaction with Columbia's plans for the band. In 1970, Chapman joined Canadian showband Leather and Lace and eventually played bass for rockabilly legend Ronnie Hawkins in 1972. In 1972,Chapman and partners started a musician management company and opened Springfield Sound Studios, where, among others, folk musician Stan Rogers recorded his albums Turnaround and Fogarty's Cove. After having toured with his own band in the early 1980s, in 1986 Chapman returned home to London and built another recording studio. He started a second jingle company where he wrote and recorded the "Tear 'Em Up Tigers" theme song for the London-based Detroit Tigers farm team. It gained international recognition as an anthem for the organization on its way to a US Eastern League baseball championship in 1989, in addition to getting local media coverage and raising thousands of dollars for charity. In 1988, Chapman was contracted to write novelty songs for Peter Garland's top-rated morning show on CFPL 980 Radio. Some of his songs were heard across Canada on the CBC, including "Stand Up for Canada, Eh!", recorded by the True Grit Band that at times included Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and future City of London Mayor Joe Fontana, and used as the theme for a nationwide campaign to promote Canadian unity during the 1995 Referendum. In 1992, Chapman was offered a job as a talk show host at London's CJBK Radio. After a year there, and a subsequent two-year stint at CKSL, he returned to CJBK as the host of Talk of the Town. He was later hired as a news commentator on CFPL television and also hosted the thrice-weekly Jim Chapman Show interview show evenings on the Rogers TV Network for several years. He was a columnist with The London Free Press and Business London magazine for two decades, and was the first person in London media to host his own radio and TV shows while also writing regular newspaper and magazine columns.Chapman had an unsuccessful run in the Ontario Provincial Election for the Progressive Conservatives. In 2023 Chapman was inducted into the London Music Hall of Fame along with his fellow 1960's Bluesmen Revue band members.Near-death experienceIn 1999, Jim Chapman suffered a fatal heart attack and was left brain-dead in a local ER. He was eventually resuscitated, but not before having a near-death experience. Emergency surgery after a second serious heart attack just days later left him very ill and incapacitated for several months. He used the time to tell the story of what he called his "adventure" in a book, Heart and Soul, that became a regional bestseller and generated thousands of dollars for charity. For the next few years, in addition to his media work, Chapman travelled extensively, speaking about his near-death experience and its aftermath. After a serious illness in 2005, Chapman was inspired to write another book, Come Back to Life, that related the story of the years since his near-death experience and how his life in the interim had been affected by it. www.jimchapman.caBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.

Dark Windows Podcast ep. 288: This week we are doing something a bit different than normal. Kevin C. found a couple of North American Folk singer / songwriters that have a couple of things tragically in common. I grew up listening to Jim Croce with my dad and found Stan Rogers as an adult and listen to him with my son, both of these guys were fantastic song writers and I would put money on the fact that just about everyone has heard some of their work even if they didn't realize it. https://pdcn.co/e/traffic.megaphone.fm/AOR1464637139.mp3?updated=1719535119 Check us out on Patreon and get every new episode early and ad free for $1 or if you want that PLUS a bonus episode every week that's only $5! patreon.com/darkwindowspodcast Learn more about your ad choices. A young musician from Pasadena is doing his first solo show this weekend. If you love folk music, and Stan Rogers in particular, you will want to be there.17-year-old Jay Adey-Rideout has been performing with his dad for many years, but his current obsession with the music of Stan Rogers led him to decide that his first solo show would be a Stan Rogers tribute. It's happening Saturday night at the Rotary Arts Centre in Corner Brook.
This week's installment is SUMMERFOLK - Then and Now! It features the music of performers from Summerfolks past and present including: the The Duhks (theme); David Wiffen; Matt Andersen; Tom Rush; Angelique Francis; Rory Block; Mimi Obonsawin; Loreena McKennitt; Kailey Jane Hawkins; and Stan Rogers.
This weeks installment is all about work songs: the love of work; the struggle; the joy. Songs by Rita Mac Neil; Matt Andersen; Tim Harrison; Gordon Lightfoot; AnnMarie Rowland; Stan Rogers; David Mallett; Si Kahn; and JP Cormier and Dave Gunning.
It's been 40 years since Stanley Allison Rogers lost his life. He was on an Air Canada flight where a fire had broken out as he was making his way back home from a show in Texas. He was just 33 years old. But what a legacy he's left us through his recordings and songs. Even though he was born in Hamilton, Ontario, he had a connection to the Maritimes, spending summers in Guysborough County. His debut album, Fogarty's Cove contains the original song that has become a staple around pubs, clubs and campfires. Barrett's Privateers is a perfect example of a modern folk song using a traditional sea shanty as inspiration. And many musicians have been inspired by Stan's rich baritone and his knack for writing songs that would make you believe he was a farmer, a fisherman and a celtic bard. Later this summer is the 26th edition of the festival named in his honour July 20th-23rd. Troy Greencorn is the festival founder and artistic director of The Stan Rogers Folk Festival.

Welcome to the Apocalist Book Club. I'm Nella, and I know it's been a while. Before we get back to it with season 2, I have some other work to wrap up on our sister podcast. See, in 2007 a supernatural horror book by Dan Simmons was published and by 2016 the story was adapted by AMC for a 10 episode season called THE TERROR. Now, I'll grant you, it's not an apocalypse. But it is a fictionalized version of what might have happened to the Franklin Expedition. And listeners, you know how this podcast feels about Doomed Polar Exploration. I have joined my wife Joy and our friend Danielle on Binge O'Clock as guest historical enthusiast and resident Franklin Expedition obsessive. You can follow along over at Binge O'Clock on Spotify starting May 22, and new episodes will be released every 2 weeks. Enjoy this early access to the introduction episode--fter all, it was on May 19th, 178 years ago, THAT 129 officers and crewmen under the leadership of Sir John Franklin left England. Their mission was to bridge the gap on British maps, and complete the Northwest passage. Spoilers: they all died. So I hope you'll pick up a copy of the book, give the series a watch, play that Stan Rogers song on repeat, and join us as we unpack the rats nest of book vs show vs historical record.
This week's show looks at the human voice and acapella singing. It features Windborne; The Watersons; Gordon Lightfoot; Ojibway Square Dance; Home Free; The Nylons; Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss; Lou Killen; Kathy Keknek and Janet Aglukkaq; The Young Tradition; and Stan Rogers.
A look ahead at the summer around the corner. The playlist doesn't run in chronological order but, for the sake of your calendar, here's what's on the show: Andy Elliott (Hami G + Lakewater, May 18 Heartwood) The Sadies (June 17, Marsh Street Center), Rufus Wainwright, Feist, Jeremy Dutcher and Weather Station (July 7-9, Mariposa Folk Fest), Daniel Lanois (July 20-21, Meaford Hall), Owen Pallett, U.S. Girls, Witch Prophet and Hayden (July 28-30, Hillside Festival) and Boogey the Beat (July 18-20, Riverfest Elora) the same weekend as Summerfolk, which gets a few nods on today's show, including a Stan Rogers tune with a local connection.

Jaka oszczędność paliwa i czasu? Prawda? I niektóre z nich poczyniły pewne odkrycia. Zainspirowała go własna podróż, jaką odbył koncertując z zespołem. Sail Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: „Northwest Passage” w wykonaniu Stana Rogersa z zespołem, słowa i muzyka: Stan Rogers „Northwest Passage” w wykonaniu Grzegorza „GooRoo” Tyszkiewicza, słowa: Dorota Potoręcka, muzyka: Stan Rogers
Having been recently rescued from their own troubles by Mari-Elin, Tric and Heppa repay the favor by helping the human carter in return. Scene 3Scene 4 GM Notes Part of this arc was inspired by The Mary Ellen Carter by Canadian folk music legend Stan Rogers. I'd had the idea for this encounter bumping around in my head for a while, but I had no specific plan to use it in this arc. However, when the bats were getting the better of the PCs at the end of last episode, that seemed the perfect time to bring Mari-Elin into play. We're about to take a few weeks off, but before we do that, let's cover some listener requests! While not themed, per se, they both deal with the hustle and bustle of the winter holiday season. "Winona Ryder Hates Christmas" by Fake Shark Real Zombie is a song that takes its inexplicably silly premise seriously, while "At Last, I'm Ready For Christmas" by Stan Rogers deftly injects some sincerity into a silly-sounding scenario. The ranking music in this episode is "Dear Abby" by John Prine. Thank you to Scott and Knut for these requests!
Michał is a member of the Polish shanty group Perły i Łotry and a sitting Member of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. Shanties play a special role in the Polish music scene, which is surprising given the country is largely land-locked! Michał talks to us all about how shanties came to be so popular in his country and what makes shanty singing in Poland different from anywhere else in the world. We also get his on-the-ground perspective on the war in neighbouring Ukraine.⚓︎ Shanties featured:- Opening credits: Paddy Doyle's Boots, trad. arranged by Pressgang Mutiny- Live song: Donkey Riding, trad. arranged by Michał Mrozik and Pressgang Mutiny- Live song: Burza (Bully in the Alley), trad. arranged by Perły i Łotry- Live song: Northwest Passage (Polish), English version written by Stan Rogers, arranged by Perły i Łotry feat. This episode we talk about four underrated Christmas songs - from No Doubt, through Stan Rogers to Jethro Tull. There are also some honourable mentions, and even our most disliked Christmas songs!
This is the first episode of a genre swapping series - I make a playlist for a friend, and they make one in return, based on music that we know little about! I am joined by my friend Felix, and he has given me some UK Drill to listen to, while I have given him some trad folk. Definitely an odd contrast. in this episode we talk about the artists: SL, FOLHIO, Digga D, Dave, Tion Wayne, June Tabor, Martin Simpson, Daoirí Farrell and Stan Rogers
William “Grit” Laskin is not only one of the world's most talented and respected makers of steel-string, classical and flamenco guitars, but he expertly adds unique designs to the guitars he builds through intricate engraved inlay artwork. His fans include legendary guitarists such as Rik Emmett, Tom Cochrane, k.d.lang, Jesse Cook, Garnet Rogers, and Stan Rogers. Stan Rogers is arguably the most underrated folk musician of the 1970s. He had it all: the voice, the lyrics, the songs and the attitude. Tragically, he died at the age of 33 in a plane crash at his creative peak. Luckily for us though, he left us a brilliant body of folk music, ranging from sea shanties to traditional ballads - all brilliantly performed and recorded. In this episode I talk to my brother about Stan's musicianship, and the skills of those who recorded with him.
OK, so this is a weird one. But basically, a few months ago I tried to think of a song with a name in for each letter of the alphabet. For example: Annie's Song for A, Barbara Ann for B. This is the first in a series of podcasts introducing some of these songs to my friends. We're starting at the beginning of the alphabet (crazy, I know), with A, B & C. The songs discussed here are: Alucard by Gentle Giant; Barrett's Privateers by Stan Rogers; and Carmelita by Warren Zevon.
Continuing the trend of odd episode themes, this time I am talking to my brother about similar songs, and comparing them. Not rip offs, per se, but similar in theme or subject matter... you'll just have to listen to see what I mean! Either way, where else are you going to hear a classic Kate Bush song and the Pina Colada Song mentioned in the same breath?
