Welcome to another episode of Perspective Checks where I sit down with friends and folks from the TTRPG world and discuss what they love about this wonderful hobby! This month I'm honored to have sat down and talked with one of my absolute favorite game designers Cezar Capacle! You've heard me play multiple of his games on this feed such as Wraithound and Midnight Melodies, and believe me I will play more of them! Cezar is a Brazilian game designer now living on the island of Madeira and not only does he put out a lot of games, all of which are incredibly quality, his breadth of genres and mechanics and concepts is truly a marvel to behold. We talk about his philosophy of letting all of your ideas bounce around in your head like a game design hadron collider to his work ethic of diligent vs. inspired creativity which helps him capitalize on those a-ha moments. Honestly, if you take nothing else from this episode, this was an amazing tip to just show up and do the work so you find your groove, hone your craft, and then the rest will come easily when the muse comes to bless you with great game ideas. But most importantly, we talk about his upcoming game Mausworn: Brave Tails on Perilous Trails, a Mausritter-meets-Ironsworn game of mice adventurers on epic quests. This game feels like it was made FOR ME, and you can be I'm going to play it on this podcast when I can! Instead of just taking bits and mashing up the two systems, Cezar has carefully crafted OSR sensibilities and Ironsworn's narrative generation into a whole new thing and it. sounds. amazing. Cezar's YouTube channel has multiple videos on his process with Mausworn I highly recommend! I hope you enjoy this chat, I would love to bother and chat with Cezar every day about games if I could. Go get his games and tell me (and him!) how excellent your experience was, you won't be sorry. ----more---- Join the DMs After Dark Discord channel! I made a Ko-Fi if you feel absurdly generous and want to help cover podcast hosting costs & all the upkeep. I'm still working on whether I want to offer anything special over there or just give my extreme gratitude (maybe some stickers or something in the mail) to those who donate, but no pressure whatsoever :) Where to Follow Rene Plays Games: LinkTree | BlueSky | Threads | Instagram | Facebook | DMs After Dark Rene's Games: MECH | MECH Cities 2 | One Last Quest | I Know I Know You, But I Don't Know How... email: RenePlaysGamesPod@gmail.com Music in the Episode (in order of appearance): Rene Plays Games Theme written & produced by Dan Pomfret | @danfrombothbands

Das fragen wir Sebastian Hahn a.k.a.
This week Andrew is joined by Webby and Ben to discuss a rapid harvest and last week's brutal drop in market prices. The team question why the market hasn't reflected recent political events, and why spring barley is performing so poorly — with a 65% loss rate and considerable variability in the spec of barley coming into store. Feed wheat prices are looking up though, and Norfolk has finally had some rain.Ben and Andrew also announce an upcoming trip to Scandinavia. They turn their attention to OSR — is it still as profitable as it once was? With planting season approaching, concerns are growing for those with no plants in the ground and crop grants on the line. Food security worries across the UK and Europe also surface. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Dan and Paul, the Wandering DMs, are joined by Kelsey Dionne, creator of the award-winning Shadowdark RPG. Shadowdark has become one of the most talked-about fantasy RPGs in recent years, winning over both old-school gamers and players coming from modern editions of D&D. How did the game come to be? What were the guiding design principles behind it? And how does Shadowdark blend the fast-paced, high-stakes feel of the OSR with the accessibility and familiarity that modern D&D players expect? Join us as we talk with Kelsey about the origins of Shadowdark, its design philosophy, and why the game has resonated with so many tables. Find out more official Shadowdark info at Kelsey's site, The Arcane Library `
In this week's Bitesize, Andrew opens with an update on the winter barley harvest so far. He moves on to Ukraine hitting the Russian shadow fleet and the closure of the Azov Strait — one to watch. Andrew expects feed barley to follow the momentum of feed wheat, and shares his belief that crop sizes are shrinking. He rounds things off on a brighter note — OSR is shaping up to be the crop of the year. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Jeff made his return from an OSR stint on Sanibel/Captiva, and he brought plenty of fishing stories, tips and tricks back with him. Capt. Kevin and Capt. Finally, throughout the morning, anglers were checking in from the Greater Jax to talk about the kings they WEREN’T catching. Here's your L.V. We reviewed Troika! by Melsonian Arts Council once before — but we hadn't played it yet. Now we have. Does actually playing it change anything? (Yes. And no.) Jesse, Matty, and Chris dig into what it's actually like to sit down at the table with an acid fantasy OSR system, whether rules-light games are good for new players, and the eternal question: if story is all that matters, why try different games at all? Also: Matty fixed D&D 5e combat, Jesse ran vampires into emotional ruin, and someone pulls out a Labyrinth goblin field guide. Music by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio
What does it take to build a tabletop RPG from the ground up? This episode, we're joined by Jared Twing, creator of Of Hearth and the Harrowing, to talk about his journey from an AD&D kid to a professional RPG writer and, ultimately, an independent game designer. We discuss his years writing for Chaosium and other publishers, why he chose the BRP system as the foundation for his game, and how influences ranging from OSR sandboxes to survival games helped shape a fantasy survival horror RPG centered on exploration, community building, and carving hope from a ruined world. Along the way, we also dive into RPG layout, art direction, publishing realities, RuneQuest, Glorantha, convention life, and the many hats an indie creator has to wear once the writing is finished. If you're interested in game design, indie publishing, or discovering a new BRP powered fantasy RPG, this is a conversation you won't want to miss. You can find Of Hearth and the Harrowing by following this link:https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/560267/of-hearth-the-harrowingEmail us at titterpigspod@gmail.com with your comments, questions, or soundbites.Episode intro by the one and only, Dr. Mitch.

With Jeff out on OSR, Capt. the studio became the Captain Collection – Capt. Kevin, Capt. Kirk, Capt. Chip Wingo, and Capt. Ricky Poupore! As you would guess, fishing talk dominated the episode. On top of all the stories, tips and tricks you’d expect, the guys also got follow up reports from the #1 and #4 finishers in last week’s Old School Kingfish Shootout. You do NOT want to miss the stories they had about their experiences. The Captain Collection also had a chance to reminisce about their friend Ben, and shared some hilarious stories about him. Jeff did call in from Kentucky, though, and he brought a crazy non-fishing story with him. You’ll have to listen to find out, but it’s quite the trip (if you know, you know). Here's your L.V. Matt Gullett has been building Eldritch Wastelands for ten years, and he's finally letting the world in. An arcane apocalypse has torn a hole in reality, civilization has collapsed, and a hundred years later, psychopathic warlords and voodoo mamas rule the ruins of the Weird South. It's Gamma World's DNA filtered through Thundarr the Barbarian and seasoned with a Southern drawl — and it runs on ShadowDark. In this episode, Matt talks about why he ditched Savage Worlds mid-project, how a friend's off-the-cuff recommendation changed everything, and why the stripped-down ShadowDark engine finally let his world breathe the way it always should have. He covers his Kickstarter's blazing fast funding, his long-game vision for quarterly zines and new content, and why running games at Texas conventions has been his single best marketing tool.Along the way we get into the elegance of purpose-built game systems versus universal ones, the OSR community's genuine warmth, RPGs as a tool for social development — Matt credits the hobby with curing a childhood stutter severe enough to make ordering ketchup at McDonald's a crisis — and the stories behind some of the hobby's most generous people. This one is for anybody who wants their apocalypse with a drawl.

It’s Old School Kingfish Shootout Saturday! Capt. Kirk was doing OSR with his son, and Capt. Kevin was busy vying for the big money, so Jeff brought in Tru Luvin’ Fishing’s Domenic Paniccia and Rick Hall to fill the chairs and have some fun. Coverage began with the one and only Paul Dozier, who gave everyone the complete rundown on the tournament, and continued throughout the morning with calls from a bunch of Old School anglers – Harley Bryan from CSS, Dave Edwards, Capt. Chris Stevens, “Mullethead” Paul, and more. Here’s the bonus: not only will you hear reports about how they’re doing, but you’ll be able to pick up a lot of tips – you might need to listen to this one with a notepad. The Old School was the headline for this episode, as expected, but when you have Rick Hall in the house, you gotta talk hunting, too. So if you need a little hunting fix, you have that in this one as well. Here's your L.V. Hiers Inc gear tip of the week: Don't get caught without gas! Bring a 5 gallon gas can just in case! In fact, get yourself a few of these Flo-Fast gas cans…and according to Jeff, you have to get the pump, too! Here's your Ring Power Cat tip of the week! Kingfish season means trolling. The weather, unfortunately, has continued to be distinctly un-funny. Water conditions are still messy, wind continues to be pushy, salinity levels are still wonky…what’s an angler to do? FYI – things MAY be looking better (go ahead and cross your fingers). Now the great part about having a guy like Capt. Larry in the studio is the stories – it didn’t matter what the subject was…he had great stories for every single one of ’em. Fishing, hunting, good weather, bad weather, you name it. This is the ultimate episode for great tales. Here's your L.V. Hiers Inc gear tip of the week: For Father's Day… drop a hint to your wife or kids! Tactacam is available at Hagan Ace Hardware in Mandarin, Glen Saint Mary, Green Cove Springs and Callahan! Here's your Ring Power Cat tip of the week from Captain Chip Wingo! Chaosium is reviving the iconic The Great Pendragon Campaign for the 6th edition of the Pendragon tabletop RPG, originally created by Greg Stafford. Known for exploring 80 years of Arthurian legend, the updated campaign will be released in multiple volumes over two years, starting with Pendragon: The Boy King in August 2026. This first entry covers nearly twenty in-game years during King Uther Pendragon’s reign, focusing on a period of chaos and civil war that sets the path for Camelot’s rise. The new version is built upon notes and updates drafted by Stafford before his passing, aiming to integrate his complete vision of Arthurian Britain. MCDM has launched a free alpha playtest for their upcoming Crows tabletop RPG, a survival horror dungeon crawler set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. The game, influenced by the OSR style, casts players as “Crows” searching for treasure in ancient ruins. Key mechanics emphasize survival and attrition, featuring equipment-driven character design, treasure-based advancement (where experience is gained from bringing loot back to town), and a central slot-based inventory system. Magic is unpredictable and lethal, combat is fast and dangerous, and time in the dungeon is tracked using Dungeon Turns and usage dice for resources. The playtest is centered on the multi-level “Blood Library” adventure, and players are asked to submit feedback before June 29th, 2026. MÖRK BORG Heresy Supreme, the first video game adaptation of the apocalyptic MÖRK BORG tabletop RPG, is now available in Early Access. This is a side-scrolling action RPG featuring “souls-like” combat that is brutal, slow, and requires careful timing, where death is a constant element. The game’s premise involves a desperate attempt to stall the Apocalypse in a cursed, dark fantasy world. The developers plan to keep the game in Early Access for six months to a year, and they are actively engaging the player community to help shape future features, including voting on the next playable Class. Venger's Decks has released the physical edition of The Chaos Card Deck TTRPG, a complete, rules-light, card-based system designed for zero-prep tabletop adventuring. The game's main appeal is its extreme portability and accessibility, using a single tarot-sized deck to handle mechanics for character creation, session generation, and on-the-fly monster encounters. The Chaos supports both solo and group play through a simple structural loop (The Keep, The Realm, return) that accommodates fluctuating player counts. The physical release, which is intended as a tactile upgrade over the free digital rules, also includes downloadable assets like high-definition battle maps and printable character sheets. #pendragon #crowsrpg #morkborg #vengerdecks Mork Borg: Heresy Supreme: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3216800/MRK_BORG_Heresy_Supreme/ https://www.morbidwaregames.com/ Pendragon Campaign: https://www.chaosium.com/blogpendragon-the-boy-king-the-epic-ttrpg-campaign-returns/ MCDM Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mcdm Chaos Cards: https://thechaosttrpg.com/products/the-chaos-card-deck-tabletop-roleplaying-game Demonic Grimoire on Backkit: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/exalted-funeral/old-school-essentials-demonic-grimoire Hellblaster: Against the Cyberfiend: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/bloodstar-productions/hellblaster-against-the-cyberfiends Warmachine on MyMiniFactory: https://mmf.io/upturned Mantic Companion App: https://companion.manticgames.com/ Use our Referral code: MCTXEE Support Us by Shopping on DTRPG (afilliate link): https://www.drivethrurpg.com?affiliate_id=2081746 Matt’s DriveThruRPG Publications: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matthew%20Robinson https://substack.com/@matthewrobinson3 Chris on social media: https://hyvemynd.itch.io/ Jeremy's Links: http://www.abusecartoons.com/ http://www.rcharvey.com Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/upturnedtable Give us a tip on our livestream: https://streamlabs.com/upturnedtabletop/tip Donate or give us a tip on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/2754JZFW2QZU4 Intro song is “Chips” by KokoroNoMe https://kokoronome.bandcamp.com/

Capt. Kirk was out doing some OSR, so Capt. Kevin and Jeff welcomed in Harley from CSS Fireplaces and Outdoor Living, along with some heavy hitters for a special episode of the show. The headline story, as you know, was the blocking of snapper season by a federal judge…THE DAY BEFORE THE SEASON BEGAN. Yeah, we know. Here’s the thing: it’s complicated, so the boys brought in Brett Hastings, attorney extraordinaire, to explain a bit of it in a way we can all understand. This is a MUST-LISTEN for anyone who fishes our waters or benefits from recreational fishing in any way – which is all of us. But this story goes beyond the legal aspects, so the boys brought in Dr. Darin Willingham to talk about it, too. He talked about the fisheries and the effects of the injunction on local recreational anglers as well as the economic impact on the community. Of course, we’re all trying to figure out what to do next. Unfortunately, it’s time to wait for all the other parties to move forward. In the meantime, it doesn’t hurt to reach out to your local representative, state senators and the governor’s office to keep this a priority for them. If you need to consult an attorney, Brett is your man! Visit his firm’s website, HastingsInjuryLaw.com, to learn more about what Brett and his team can do for you. Here's your L.V. Capt. Kevin was doing some OSR, so Capt. Chip Wingo, along with Capt. Rob Robbins, took command of the vessel and immediately steered everyone into rough waters based on what Capt. Ricky had to say. But don’t feel like you have to abandon ship just yet. Listen in and check out what all the Unusual Suspects have to say about what’s been happening with them…and what coming up. Facebook
Matt and Rob discuss a very good blog post about old-school renaissance games: The OSR Onion. We ask important questions like: What is the philosophy of OSR? What kind of games does this philosophy enable? What does 'old' mean? Does anyone read blogs anymore? Castle Naerytar is the 6th chapter of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, the first book of a two book D&D 5e Adventure including The Rise of Tiamat. In Old School D&D, you got most of your XP for treasure. Not for kills — for gold. You leveled up by dragging loot back to the village, and it changed everything about how your 5e D&D sessions actually played at the table. In this video I make the case that GP-for-XP is the single most underrated rule in Old School D&D, why 5e D&D's milestone and combat-XP systems quietly trained your players to fight every encounter, and the exact rule you can drop into your 5e game this weekend to turn your dungeons from combat slogs into actual puzzles. If you're a 5e DM whose sessions feel like one fight after another with nothing in between, watch this video. If you want to see what's coming next in the D&D game I'm building, my Patreon has all the work-in-progress: patreon.com/Joethelawyer
Jeff was doing some OSR, which left a seat open for Capt. Chip Wingo to join Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk. And what were they talking about? Welll, kinda sorta everything. It was “baiterrific” in St. Augustine, with Kevin telling the boys the amount of bait was unprecedented this week. And depending on where they went, the Jacksonville guys were doing well, too. The drought conditions continue to be a source of conversation – and concern – but thankfully, the weather should be taking a turn and bringing some much-needed rain. The guys talked all about it, and what the weather could mean for summer fishing and deer season this fall. It was a great episode for all kinds of chatter…including some sideways stuff you’ll need to hear to believe! Here's your L.V. Hiers Inc gear tip of the week: A lot of anglers are using the short shank, tear drop jig heads for live shrimp and the new swing jig for fishing mud minnows and mullet. Available at Strike Zone and Palm Valley Outdoors and made by Captains Choice Tackle. Here's your Ring Power Cat tip of the week: with snapper season approaching, it's a good idea to have a good venting tool or descending device. Click here for one option on Amazon. Here’s your KirbyCo Builders’ Cooking Tip of the Week: A wonderful way to use your Nettles Gilchrist sausage is to add them to your vegetable medley of choice. We decided to use potatoes, onions and peppers. We used a small amount of olive oil, about a tablespoon. 2 teaspoons of butter and seasoning of choice. We did off setting heat on the grill or you can bake at 400 in the oven. You can use whatever medley you enjoy! Facebook
WotC didn't lose the hobby because of bad dice math or edition creep. They lost it because they treated DMs like a revenue stream instead of the engine that drives D&D forward — and when DMs burned out and walked away, nobody at WotC noticed or cared. In this video I break down exactly how that happened, why it matters, and what we in the OSR are doing about it.If you want to see what's coming next in the D&D game I'm building, my Patreon has all the work-in-progress: patreon.com/Joethelawyer

You've been roleplaying this slimeball of a merchant for 30 minutes. The Players are into the scene! They're listening to every word you say, looking at every facial expression you make, trying like hell to figure out if he's lying. You're roleplaying your ass off, giving an Oscar-worthy performance of a lifetime. They think he's lying….THEY KNOW HE'S LYING…and one player is just about to call him out on it when another player says “I roll an Insight check to see if he's lying. 25. Is he lying to us?” Where is the fun in that? Insight, persuasion deception, intimidation and all the other social skill checks take all the joy of human interaction out of your game.In this video I make the case that Insight, Persuasion, Deception, and Intimidation rolls are the single biggest reason your 5e D&D roleplay sessions feel hollow. We get into where these social skill checks came from, why old-school D&D never had them, and the simple fix you can try at your table this weekend that brings actual roleplaying back. If you've been a 5e DM long enough to feel that something's off about how social encounters resolve at your table, this one's for you.CHAPTERS:0:00 The Slimeball Merchant2:05 What Social Skills Do4:35 Engagement is a Requirement for FUN6:28 Try this in your Next GameIf you want to see what's coming next in the D&D game I'm building, my Patreon has all the work-in-progress: patreon.com/Joethelawyer
