Jeff was out on OSR this week, so Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk got things going themselves this episode. But they didn’t end it that way – Capt. Paul Dozier joined them to talk a whole lot of fishing, including kingfishing (what else would the mastermind of the Old School talk about?) and naturally progressing into some really cool trolling talk. They were talking offshore, and of course, when anybody talks about going offshore, the conversation shifts to sharks. Quite the interesting discussion ensued about how many are out there…and how much protection they really need. Talked a little hunting, too…spawned by a very “interesting” story from a caller who caught a look at an intimate moment. Here's your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Capt. Cory Sparks hooked up Capt. Kevin for Christmas with the Black Sierra 7″ Outdoor firepit. He's been using it and burning all the pine cones. Perfect for doing s’mores, too! Capt. Kevin was off on some New Year’s OSR, but he checked in via the wonders of modern technology…to find Tru Luvin Fishing’s Domenic Paniccia sitting in his chair at the studio! As you can imagine, lots of fun and fishing talk ensued. Capt. Kirk shared the audio of a pack of yotes going BONKERS on his property…and why? Because something was in there with them, and one of those seems to have met an untimely end thanks to the beast that growls at the end of the clip. What was it – a bear? panther? BIGFOOT?!?!?!? Not sure what brought it up (maybe the New Year’s fireworks?), but the guys got to talking about flashlights and kicked around all kinds of recommendations. That led to this episode going really gear-heavy. Flashlights, artificial lures, knives…and more. Here's your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Chris got the Handy Heater for Christmas this year. He was skeptical, but it really works! Cranks out the heat in a hurry, variable temp setting, auto shut-off, and a timer, too! Facebook
Ever wondered what beer chemistry, emo vampires, and broom mechanics have in common? Neither did we—until this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast! We're diving deep into RPG madness, from the grimy charm of Shadow Dark to the chaos of Warhammer's magic (spoiler: it's messy). Then, we tackle Symbaroum, where sweeping is serious business, and Vison, the perfect game for overachieving detectives. Horror fans, brace yourselves! It's eldritch chills with Call of Cthulhu, slapstick terror with Pulp Cthulhu, and Appalachian nightmares with Old Gods of Appalachia. Oh, and don't forget Vampire: The Masquerade, where brooding has never been so stylish. Summary Join the RPGBOT hosts as they embark on a tabletop odyssey filled with epic quests, fermented wisdom, and dice-fueled shenanigans! In this episode, they sip on the heady brew of beer chemistry before stumbling into the Old-School Renaissance of Shadow Dark—where dungeons are grim, and death is always just a dice roll away. The adventure takes a quirky turn with Symbaroum, a game where sweeping mechanics finally get their moment in the spotlight, and spirals into the arcane depths of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay's magic systems (spoiler: it's like herding chaotic cats). Mystery lovers, rejoice! They dissect Vison, an RPG that dares players to think—and maybe overthink—its clever puzzles. For horror fans, it's a double feature: Call of Cthulhu's sanity-shattering frights meet Pulp Cthulhu's lighthearted antics (think Indiana Jones with an eldritch twist). The hosts then dive fang-first into Vampire: The Masquerade and the brooding drama of World of Darkness, where players face the ultimate challenge: emo roleplay. To cap it off, the crew gets their candles snuffed out in Ten Candles and pulled into the spine-tingling Appalachian horrors of Old Gods of Appalachia. Whether you're rolling a nat 20 or a nat 1, this episode celebrates RPGs in all their weird, wonderful glory. What happens when a player can't make it—and the story needs them? In this episode of Jaunty Mantis, Jesse, Matty, and Chris tackle one of tabletop gaming's most frustrating problems: last-minute absences. From running flashbacks and side games to stealing scenes, leaning into OSR one-shots, and even letting story beats happen without the missing player, the crew shares hard-earned advice, devilish ideas, and genuinely practical GM techniques.Music by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio
Hex crawl, point crawl, dungeon crawl... pub crawl?

Send us a textIn 2023 I was already neck deep into my Kickstarter obsession when I saw an advertisement for a brand new OSR style roleplaying game called Shadowdark. It was the creation of Kelsey Dionne and it looked very cool. The book was large and black with silver script and silver artwork of what I thought was a beholder.I immediately backed it. But to be fair I was immediately backing a lot of things back then. When I turned on my YouTubes I got blasted with a social media blitz unlike any I had seen before. All of the TTRPG sites that covered anything even remotely different than D&D were all over this game. The superlatives seemed to match the online excitement and soon it had garnered 1.4 million dollars on Kickstarter.I couldn't wait to get the book. But while I was reading the .pdf and waiting for the hardback to arrive I had the chance to watch Kelsey Dionne herself walk backers through her creation process of the ranger class. I also got to see a number of interviews with her regarding the product. Again, I just kept getting more and more excited. When the book finally came it sat on my bookshelf. Now don't be sad for the game, that's what tends to happen to most of the stuff I grab off of Kickstarter. But, it was on a short list of games to be played. Finally, my Masks of Nyrlethotep came to a shuddering, bumbling halt and I wanted something fast, easy, and different as a palette cleanser. Enter Shadowdark. I quickly brushed up on the rules and set the date for my group. This was about the same time that the Glass Cannon Podcast announced they were going to be using Shadowdark as the rules for their next big live play. Yep, stoked again. We dove head first into Shadowdark. And it was … Ok … I guess. Not the resounding plug you thought I was going to give.If you are fans of the game, stick around because we are diving deeper than that. There are some really good things about this game. Some really bad things about this game. And a lot of mehh things about this game. In this episode Mike, Christina, and I are going to walk you through all of that and give you our honest review of the game.

You know that moment when your players spend ten minutes searching a room, roll a 5, and you sigh before saying, "You find… nothing"? Yeah, we're done with that. In this episode, the RPGBOT crew grabs the Dungeon Master's Guide by the binding and asks the real questions: Why are searches so boring, and why do your players keep looting every chair leg like it's the Ark of the Covenant? It's time to make treasure exciting again — and maybe throw in a cursed spoon or two for good measure. Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts dive into using random treasure and how to make it fun. Not ready for the burden of homebrewing every magical baubel the players find? Still want treasure to feel cool and exciting instead of handing out 2d4 silver pieces? Grab a random treasure table and listen in. They cover: How to curate random treasures so rewards feel tailored, not tacked on. Procedural generation and OSR-style loot tables for DMs who want surprise without chaos. The psychology of reward design—why a potion of healing can feel more exciting than a +1 sword. How Pathfinder 2e's treasure parcel system solves common D&D loot issues. Turning random loot into story hooks that feed back into your worldbuilding. Whether you're running a gritty hexcrawl, a dungeon delve, or a modern urban fantasy, you'll walk away with tools to hoard of treasure hoards and make every treasure feel earned. Key Takeaways Roll less, describe more. Replace meaningless Perception checks with interactive exploration and sensory clues. Random doesn't mean meaningless. Curate your treasure tables around your campaign's themes. Passive Perception is your pacing tool. Use it to keep exploration snappy without robbing players of agency. Economy matters. Gold, consumables, and downtime rewards all affect campaign health. Player engagement > item rarity. Surprise players with creativity, not just loot value. Procedural tools save prep time. Random tables and generators can be incredible when you understand their purpose. Reward discovery, not just dice. Make your players feel clever when they find something hidden — even if you planned it all along. If you've ever caught yourself saying "You find nothing," it's time to level up your DM game. The Thaumaturgical subject today involves a method for creating minor magic items and scrolls in your OSR game through the spell, Embed.
Listening back to my last Monday Milieu, I realized I had completely forgotten one of my favorite settings, and maybe the best one created in the OSR era - the Midderlands by Glynn Seal of Monkeyblood Design. I also do a thumbnail on his adventure, Chewer of Fingers. Sounds pretty creepy for Halloween!
This week I'm joined by 2 parts of the creative team behind Duginthroat Divided, which is an adventure location designed for Old School Essentials. It's a modular, drop-in location for lots and lots of old-school adventuring fun, and would easily port to any OSR system of your choice! It's currently on Kickstarter, though if you're coming to this later, it will release in the usual places as well! A ramble about published campaign settings, both in the “official “ TSR era, plus the independent and OSR sphere. I talk about what I look for (and dislike) in a setting, and why I usually decide to make up my own.
For week 2 of #OSRtober I talk what I believe to be the most overlooked OSR monster, and a couple overlooked settings.Share your thoughts via:

Get in touch with us!Stakes make stories breathe. We sit down with Jon Cohen - writer, host, and designer behind Tale of the Manticore and One Shot in the Dark - to explore why consequence beats comfort, how a hybrid format turns solo play into gripping audio drama, and what it takes to build a one-shot that actually ends in one sitting. Jon walks us through the creative risks, the craft, and the quiet discipline that keeps a polished episode shipping every 10 days without losing the sting in its tail.We also talk about One Shot in the Dark, John's rules ultra-light dungeon crawl where cards prompt the map you draw, four hapless adventurers push forward through three levels, and a final boss waits at the end. It's emergent narrative with real replay value and a surprisingly welcoming on-ramp for kids and new players. If you're interested in checking out One Shot in the Dark it can be found here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/366526/one-shot-in-the-darkLikewise, Tale of the Manticore is here: https://www.taleofthemanticore.com/Hawaii Travel & Vacation GuideDiscover Hawaii's Best local spots and travel tips!Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyContact us at:EMAIL: roll.to.save.pod@gmail.comFACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/rolltosavepodWEBSITE: https://rolltosave.blogHOSTS: Iain Wilson, Steve McGarrity, Jason DowneyBACKGROUND MUSIC: David Renada (Find him at: davidrendamusic@gmail.com or on his web page).TITLE, BREAK & CLOSEOUT MUSIC: Xylo-Ziko (Find them on their web page).
A brief look at what fantasy books, movies and art developed my tastes in fantasy gaming. These are possibly what keep me focused on what you might call OSR gaming. My (abbreviated) Appendix N?
The World of Eora: an Avowed & Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast
The World of Eora is a news & lore podcast about the fantasy setting created by Obsidian Entertainment for their cRPG series, Pillars of Eternity, and their action RPG: Avowed. This week is more of a "stream of consciousness" talk, with lore discussed throughout. A looooong time ago I talked about infusing the world of Eora into tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons (specifically 5th Edition). However, what if you were playing games more in line with the OSR ("Old School Renaissance") style of play, such as Cairn, which I've recently gotten into. It's a much less measured approach, but one that seems more intuitive...and one that seems easier with Avowed, I might add.So I discuss the biggest ideas in Eora that we see in the games that need to be considered when approaching OSR style TTRPGs. This might be the first in a couple episodes dedicated to this topic, but it won't be a long-running thing, since we want to focus on different lore here over time. But I think it's valuable nonetheless.worldofeora@gmail.com@worldofeorako-fi.com/worldofeora
