Good morning from Pharma Daily: the podcast that brings you the most important developments in the pharmaceutical and biotech world. Today, we delve into a rapidly evolving landscape marked by significant scientific breakthroughs, regulatory shifts, and strategic business maneuvers. The pharmaceutical and biotech sectors are buzzing with renewed vigor, as evidenced by an impressive resurgence in mergers and acquisitions. A recent analysis by PwC reports that M&A activity has reached over $65 billion in deal value during the first quarter of 2026, marking the strongest quarter since 2020. This uptick underscores a robust confidence within the industry, with companies strategically leveraging these mergers to bolster their pipelines and explore new therapeutic territories. Eli Lilly's acquisition of non-opioid pain drugmaker 4E is a case in point, as it reflects a broader industry shift towards precision medicine and non-opioid pain management solutions—a response to growing concerns over opioid addiction. On the regulatory front, notable developments include Colorado's drug import plan receiving FDA approval. This marks a bold step in curbing drug costs across the U.S., although implementation challenges remain due to complex logistical and regulatory landscapes. Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk is expanding its global manufacturing footprint with a new plant in the Czech Republic for diabetes and obesity drugs, alongside a $29 million investment to upgrade its Chinese facility. This expansion aligns with Novo's strategic preparation to seek Chinese regulatory approval for its Wegovy pill, potentially transforming the obesity treatment landscape. In a move that could reshape vaccine development, Moderna is advancing its mRNA-based influenza vaccine candidate through regulatory channels. The FDA's favorable reviews ahead of an advisory committee meeting highlight the growing acceptance of mRNA technology beyond COVID-19 vaccines. This technology holds promise for transforming vaccine development across various infectious diseases. Precision oncology continues to grapple with translating scientific discoveries into practical applications that genuinely improve patient outcomes. The ASCO 2026 conference emphasized this critical transition from discovery to implementation as essential for advancing precision medicine. Turning to gene therapy, UniQure is preparing for a significant milestone—submitting an accelerated Biologics License Application for its Huntington's disease therapy. This follows a reversal by the FDA, which now considers UniQure's Phase 1/2 trial data sufficient for submission. Should this therapy gain approval, it would be groundbreaking as the first genetic medicine for Huntington's disease, setting a precedent for future gene therapies targeting other genetic disorders. In another strategic partnership, Jazz Pharmaceuticals has teamed up with AbCellera to develop T-cell-engaging antibodies for oncology indications, illustrating the potential financial rewards associated with innovative cancer therapies. This collaboration could yield up to $820 million per program and highlights how partnerships are crucial in expediting drug development timelines. These stories reflect broader industry trends emphasizing innovation and strategic partnerships while navigating complex regulatory landscapes. The focus on precision medicine and advanced biologics continues to drive scientific advancements, with companies like Vedana Therapeutics targeting unmet needs in neurology through novel therapeutic approaches. Meanwhile, international collaboration is gaining traction in regulatory processes. The newly launched transatlantic liaison program between the FDA and MHRA aims to accelerate drug approvals and foster innovation across borders—an initiative that underscores the importance of collaborative frameworks. However, not all news is optimistic. Be Biopharma's decision to terminate its hemophilia B cell therapy trial highlights the challenges companies face in competitive therapeutic areas. Despite previous optimism, similar withdrawals by Pfizer and BioMarin indicate the necessity for robust clinical data and clear market differentiation strategies. Furthermore, Merck's recent agreement with Protillion Technologies marks an increased focus on integrating artificial intelligence into drug discovery processes—a trend promising accelerated timelines and improved trial success rates. As these developments unfold, it's evident that the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors are at an intersection where scientific innovation meets strategic business decisions. The potential approval of UniQure's gene therapy could catalyze further advancements in genetic medicine—while M&A activities suggest an industry poised for transformative growth. For stakeholders—from researchers to executives—the ability to adapt to these dynamic changes will be crucial in shaping the future of drug development and patient care. In conclusion, these stories collectively paint a picture of an industry evolving through scientific breakthroughs while adapting through strategic business decisions. As new technologies integrate into this space alongside regulatory advancements in gene therapy, this period of transformation holds promising implications for addressing unmet medical needs and enhancing therapeutic outcomes globally.Support the show

What happens when our need for certainty quietly disconnects us from the very meaning we're trying to find?   In this episode, live-recorded first session of a three-part conversation series with Taylor, Ethan, and John Vervaeke, the group introduces a format combining an hour of dialogue with a follow-on Zoom practice led by the featured guest. Centering on "theory into practice and practice into theory," John links Plato's cave cycle, Aristotle's move from sophia to phronesis, and 4E cognition to explain a continual movement between embodied activity and abstract reflection. They discuss Dialectic Into Dialogos practices that surface gestures and metaphors, difficulties when participants get stuck in propositional knowing or relational "vibe," and a cultural tendency toward self-help and private meaning. John emphasizes communal meaning-making, relevance realization, holy listening, trust as adaptive risk, and resisting instrumentalization, dependency, and commodified techniques through ritual, memory, and transfer into everyday life.     Taylor Barratt is the Director of Practice and Education at the Vervaeke Foundation. Collide-A-Scope: How the Internet is Fusing Our Brains and Changing Therapy, Culture and Politics

How do you know the blue you see is the same blue I see? We use the same word, but do we share the same experience? This ancient philosophical puzzle has become the defining crisis of our time. We're living through a moment where people use identical words and mean completely different things—where the same sentence can be a factual claim, a tribal signal, a joke, and a weapon simultaneously. In this episode of The Mirror World series, clinical director and psychotherapist Joel Blackstock, LICSW-S, explores the "collide-a-scope"—the moment when parallel realities can no longer stay separate through reflection and begin grinding against each other like gears that don't mesh. Read the Article THE FUSED BRAIN What happens when you surgically connect multiple living brains? They synchronize. They reorganize. They form a collective organism. This thought experiment from qEEG brain mapping provides the perfect metaphor for what's happening to us now. The internet has wired us together into a vast neural network—and just like an individual brain can develop neuroses, this collective brain is experiencing profound cognitive dissonance. THE DUAL LANGUAGE OF THE INTERNET Media theorist Walter Ong predicted that electronic media would thrust us into "secondary orality"—combining the permanence of print with the participatory rhythms of oral culture. The internet meme is the ultimate artifact of this fusion: mythic archetypes paired with hyper-literal text, operating on two frequencies simultaneously. We have never before spoken different languages using the same words. THOUGHT AS A SYSTEM Quantum physicist David Bohm warned in 1994 that thought is not something we do—it's something that happens to us. Collective thought has become so automatic that our individual thoughts are increasingly controlled by the collective without our noticing. And that was before social media, before smartphones, before algorithmic amplification. The system has been turbocharged. THE SOCIETY OF THE SPECTACLE Guy Debord saw it coming: all that was directly lived has become mere representation. The spectacle isn't just entertainment—it's a social relationship between people mediated by images. It colonizes everyday life, structures our thought, captures even our resistance. You can know social media is manipulating you and still be manipulated, because the knowing happens within the spectacle. THE COLLECTIVE PATIENT Here's the radical claim: collective psychology now functions like individual psychology. Pathology, personality disorders, grandiosity, delusions, splitting from reality—they're happening at the collective level, in near real-time. Groups of humanity can now be analyzed almost the same way you'd analyze a patient in therapy. You can identify the defenses, trace the trauma, watch the collective do exactly what an individual does when confronted with something they can't face. DIGITAL COLONIZATION The Steve Bannon, Trump, 4chan, alt-right phenomenon wasn't just politics—it was networks of the collective brain expanding, sussing out weaker regions, finding wounds and grievances, colonizing them at the speed of thought. Traditional colonialism needed ships and armies and decades. Digital colonization happens before resistance can organize. The neural pathway is laid before anyone notices. THE STAGES OF DEFLECTION Watch humanity move through the same defense mechanisms as a therapy patient avoiding change: It didn't happen Okay it happened, but it's not real Okay it's real, but it doesn't matter Okay it matters, but we can't do anything about it Okay maybe something could be done, but someone else will do it Okay it's not getting solved, but it's someone else's fault Okay it's going to take us all out, but we deserve it Watch climate discourse. Watch inequality discourse. You'll see these exact stages playing out collectively in real time. THE MIRROR WORLD The parallel objectivities aren't just tribal disagreements—they're self-contained systems of representation that are coherent and reproducible but not valid. They don't point back to anything real. When official metrics say the economy is doing well while patients can't afford a $30 copay, those metrics are reliable but not valid. We feel this disconnect—but we've been convinced the solution lies inside the metrics. This is gaslighting at civilizational scale. THE 1960s PARALLEL "Turn on, tune in, drop out" recognized the system was sick. And they weren't wrong—the institutions were corrupt, the Vietnam War was built on lies, consumer society was producing alienation. But the counterculture won the cultural war and lost everything else. By 1980, rebellion had become a marketing strategy. Symbolic victory was captured and neutralized while material defeat was total. We're at risk of making the same mistake. THE COLLISION Peter Sloterdijk described modern life as "foam"—countless bubbles providing micro-environments, each its own immunological container. The bubbles worked for a while. But material crises don't care which reality you inhabit. Climate change crosses all boundaries. Pandemics don't check your epistemological commitments. The bubbles are colliding now. Not reflecting—colliding. Grinding like gears that don't mesh. In a kaleidoscope, mirrors create beautiful patterns. In a collide-a-scope, the mirrors themselves are moving, crashing, shattering. THE WAY THROUGH The biggest step is recognizing that trauma treatment is self-evidently necessary—not as luxury, as foundation. Trauma fuels the blind spots. The parallel realities are trauma responses at collective scale. Therapy itself has to change. We have to learn to actually live together—not manage or avoid each other. Western history is largely the story of managing avoidance: tolerance as sophisticated avoidance, transactions as connection without vulnerability, rights as protection from rather than relationship with. Connection without internal avoidance. That's the task. The parts of yourself you can't face become the parts of others you can't tolerate. We need to see ourselves as multiplicities—communities of parts—and stop splitting thought from emotion. The Cartesian divide is part of what broke us. The mirrors are shattering. The gears are grinding. The collision is here. What we build from the fragments depends on whether we can finally stop avoiding—ourselves, each other, reality itself. This series examines ideas such as panpsychism, pantheism, idealism, 4E cognition, animism, perspectivism, and non-human intelligence, while also engaging with extraordinary phenomenologies found in psychedelic experiences, mystical states, and anomalous consciousness.TIMESTAMPS:(00:00) – Introduction: The Mind-at-Large Project – Consciousness Beyond the Brain(02:30) – Setting the Stage: Bridging Science, Philosophy & Mysticism(06:10) – What Does “Mind-at-Large” Mean? Ann Kennedy is Associate Professor at Scripps Research Institute and runs the Laboratory for Theoretical Neuroscience and Behavior. Among other things, Ann has been studying how processes important in life, like survival, threat response, motivation, and pain, are mediated through subcortical brain areas like the hypothalamus. She also pays attention to the time course those life processes require, which has led her to consider how the expression of things like proteins help shape neural processes throughout the brain, so we can behave appropriately in those different contexts. You'll hear us talk about how this is still a pretty open field in theoretical neuroscience, unlike the historically heavy use of theory in popular brain areas throughout the cortex, and the historically narrow focus on spikes or action potentials as the only game in town when it comes to neural computation. We discuss that and I link in the show notes to a commentary piece Ann wrote, in which she argues for both top-down and bottom-up theoretical approaches. I also link to her papers about the early evolution of nervous systems, how heterogeneity or diversity of neurons is an advantage for neural computations, and we discuss a kaggle competition she developed to benchmark automated behavioral labels of behaving organisms, so that despite different researchers using different recording systems and setups, analyzing those data will produce consistent labels to better compare across labs and aggregated bigger and better data sets. I've been so looking forward to sharing this conversation as it is an area that I am particularly passionate about. I feel very strongly that the way we think and talk about learning, teaching and education is so rooted in Behaviorism and Cognitivism and the dominant language of training and metaphors of the brain as a computer. And there is a still a widespread lack of awareness of the emerging insights of cognitive science - often called 4E cognitive science, referring to embodied, embedded, extended and enactive cognition. This is the idea that our understanding, thinking and learning in the world happen in our relationships with each other, our environments, the tools we use, and our bodies, not just as abstract representations in our brains. And there is no-one better to be talking about this with than Andrea Hiott who among other fantastic work, is the host of the Love and Philosophy channel and substack. All of her life, Andrea says, she has been motivated towards the same goal: "Finding ways for us to move beyond either/or mindsets, and to explore our multiplicity."Andrea is a philosopher, cognitive scientist and writer and is currently a researcher at numerous universities, she is also the author of various books, including Thinking Small and her latest book ‘Holding Paradox: the navigational approach to mind and consciousness' is out in 2026.Andrea's website: https://www.andreahiott.net/Andrea's Love and Philosophy channel: https://lovephilosophy.substack.com/Andrea's community philosophy Substack called Waymaking: https://communityphilosophy.substack.com/Just released: Andrea's latest paper on 'Radical Embodied Relation at any Scale, from Remembering to Navigating' - https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11245-025-10256-7Useful paper on 'What is 4E Cognitive Science?' by Cameron Alexander: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11097-025-10055-w

Laurence Kirmayer is one of the most influential figures in cultural psychiatry today. A psychiatrist, researcher, and theorist, he serves as James McGill Professor and Director of the Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry at McGill University and Editor-in-Chief of Transcultural Psychiatry. Across decades of work bridging anthropology, psychiatry, and cognitive science, Kirmayer has advanced a complex view of mental health as inseparable from culture, history, language, and political power. His research ranges from Indigenous youth resilience and narrative medicine to the diagnostic metaphors—such as “chemical imbalance” or “trauma”—that reshape identity and possibility. He has helped pioneer integrative approaches that unite phenomenology and neuroscience, including a biopsychosocial model grounded in enactive and embodied cognition, as well as a person-centered, ecosocial framework for understanding suffering beyond reductive biological paradigms. His critiques extend to how psychiatric categories reflect colonial histories and obscure social causes, as well as how attempts to localize mental health interventions may still impose Western norms. Kirmayer's scholarship on narrative, metaphor, and cultural psychiatry aligns with ongoing efforts by Indigenous psychologists and anthropologists to reframe trauma and healing through culturally grounded practices, as reflected in recent collaborative work calling for a decolonial turn in psychology. Drawing on 4E cognitive science, he proposes that metaphors are not simply rhetorical tools but embodied and enacted processes embedded in local social worlds. These shape how people experience distress and how clinicians make sense of it. His forthcoming book, Healing and the Invention of Metaphor: Toward a Poetics of Illness Experience (Cambridge University Press, July 2025), extends these themes by exploring how metaphor, narrative, and imagination shape suffering and healing across cultures, while offering a critical account of the symbolic and political frameworks embedded in contemporary psychiatric and biomedical practice. In this wide-ranging conversation, Kirmayer explores the politics of diagnostic language, the structural roots of suffering, and the poetic potential of metaphor to disrupt conformity and open new avenues for healing. From the medicalization of culturally normative expressions of distress to the reification of trauma, Kirmayer shows how dominant frameworks can limit imagination, flatten complexity, and displace political realities with individualized solutions. He calls for a psychiatry that listens not only to symptoms but to the metaphors and metaphysics that animate people's lives. *** Thank you for being with us to listen to the podcast and read our articles this year. After learning about the amazing work of my guest this week, I had an idea that I wanted to test out. Perhaps our current obsession with Large Language Models is revealing of our historic obsession with a narrow cognitivist view of how human learning happens (and, therefore, how schooling is structured)?!Memorise the largest possible bank of static data and then output plausible propositions, in response to prompts from a teacher or a standardised exam! Obviously that's a bit of an unfair caricature of the industrial schooling system, but also not a million miles from the truth! As you will have seen from my explorations over the last few years in episodes on ecological psychology, play, movement, active inference and 4E cognitive science, I believe that there is an emerging understanding of how radically embodied and embedded in place and in relationships human learning is actually is. So that's why I was so excited to learn about a vastly different approach to artificial intelligence that is based on a sensorimotor learning framework and Jeff Hawkin's Thousand Brains theory of the neocortex. Dr Viviane Clay is Executive Director of the Thousand Brains Project and a scientist with years of experience in neuroscience, AI and machine learning. She has a PhD in Cognitive Computing. The Thousand Brains Project grew out of decades of research at Numenta, a leading company in neuroscience-based AI technology, and is developing Monty, a new type of artificial intelligence based on the sensorimotor principles observed in the brain. Numenta's co-founder Jeff Hawkins is Research Advisor and Board Member of the Thousand Brains Project. You can find links to additional information about Monty and the Thousand Brains Project below:https://thousandbrains.org/ https://linktr.ee/1000brainsproj2 page overview: https://thousandbrains.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/TBP_Overview.pdfhttps://www.youtube.com/@thousandbrainsproject

The company generated $411 million in free cash flow in Q1 2025, marking its fifth consecutive quarter of improved results.Cockerill has implemented a streamlined "4E" strategy—Employees, Excellence, Exploration, and Expansion—focusing on operational efficiency and disciplined cost management. Despite industry-wide inflation, Endeavour has maintained stable costs over six quarters through initiatives like centralized procurement. The company offers investors a rare combination of high yield and substantial growth potential. With a dividend yield of approximately 6% and planned production growth of 30-35% by 2030, Endeavour appeals to both income-focused and growth-oriented investors. In 2024, the company returned $277 million to shareholders and has already guaranteed a $225 million dividend for 2025, with additional share buybacks expected.Driving Endeavour's growth strategy is the Assafou project in Côte d'Ivoire, described as "the best discovery in West Africa over the last decade." This tier-one asset holds 4.3 million ounces in reserves with a 15-year mine life and is expected to produce over 350,000 ounces annually at an all-in sustaining cost below $1,000 per ounce.Exploration remains central to the company's approach, having discovered nearly 20 million ounces in the past eight years at under $25 per ounce. Current production stands at approximately 1.2 million ounces annually from five mines across three West African jurisdictions, with plans to reach 1.5 million ounces per year by 2030.While acknowledging perceived risks in West Africa, Cockerill emphasizes Endeavour's long-standing local relationships and operational stability. Originally written by Gary Gygax to humble overconfident players and their min-maxed murderhobos, the Tomb has become a rite of passage for generations of adventurers who thought they were smart. They weren't. The hosts dive into the legacy, design philosophy, and gameplay experience of Tomb of Horrors, from its origins in early tournament play to the sadistic joy it brings DMs and the crushing despair it brings players. They analyze why this deathtrap dungeon still matters today, how to survive it (hint: you won't), and what modern lessons GMs can learn from its brutal design. Spoiler alert: There are puzzles. There are traps. There is no mercy. The Origins of the Tomb Written by Gary Gygax in 1975 for tournament play at Origins I. Designed specifically to kill off characters run by smug powergamers. (Conversation recorded on November 25th, 2024)   The crises that our world is facing seem to be constantly growing, leading to enormous and devastating systemic effects across the globe. Yet, the ripples of the human predicament are also reaching our personal lives in unexpected ways – through chronic loneliness, loss of coherence to reality, and a widespread feeling of insignificance.  How do we begin to navigate the crisis of meaning that seems to accompany modernity, exacerbated by feeling out of control in the broader world we live in?  In today's conversation, Nate is joined by professor of psychology and cognitive scientist John Vervaeke to discuss the state of ‘the meaning crisis', including the social and cultural contexts that have fostered such pervasive loss of connection and purpose. Vervaeke also unpacks the key practices that he and others have found most effective in regaining wisdom and direction while living in the modern era.  What can cognitive science tell us about the role of spirituality and religion in living a life that is rich in relationships and clarity? How do flow states, rituals, and lifelong learning contribute to strengthening mental health and fostering adaptability? And perhaps most importantly, how might reconnecting with a sense of humility, wisdom, and shared humanity help guide us toward a more meaningful, collective existence?   About John Vervaeke:  John Vervaeke, Ph.D. is an award-winning professor at the University of Toronto in the departments of psychology, cognitive science, and Buddhist psychology. He currently teaches courses in the Psychology department on thinking and reasoning, cognitive development, and higher cognitive processes. John is also the director of the Cognitive Science program where he teaches additional courses on Cognitive Science and consciousness, wherein he emphasizes 4E (embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended) models of cognition and consciousness. Additionally, John is the director of the Consciousness and Wisdom Studies Laboratory. He is also the co-author of the book Zombies in Western Culture: A 21st Century Crisis, which integrates Psychology and Cognitive Science to address the meaning crisis in Western society.  He is the author and presenter of the YouTube series Awakening from the Meaning Crisis.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   ---   Support The Institute for the Study of Energy and Our Future Join our Substack newsletter Join our Discord channel and connect with other listeners

In December 2018, we meet Rudy Coyle, a bar owner's son from Flushing, Queens, in the throes of a major quarter-life crisis. Cut out of the family business, he gets a Hail Mary job as a night doorman in a storied Park Avenue apartment building, where he comes under the wing of the family in 4E, the Cohens. Jacob "Jake" Cohen, the fast-talking patriarch, is one of a generation of financiers who made hundreds of millions of dollars in the cutthroat taxi medallion industry in the early 2000s, largely by preying on the hopes and dreams of impoverished immigrant drivers. As Jake tries to stop the bleed from the debt crisis now plaguing his company, clawing back his assets from an increasingly dangerous coterie of Russian American associates, Rudy gets promoted from doorman to errand boy to bodyguard to something like Jake's right-hand man. By turns a gripping portrait of corruption and a tender family dramedy, Atta Boy (U Iowa Press, 2024) combines the urban cool of Richard Price with the glossy, uptown charm of Taffy Brodesser-Akner. Here is a novel richly attuned to its time and place, but with something for everyone--high-wire prose and a story wedding ripped from the headlines, social realism with the warmth, angst, and humor of its indelible voices. Cally Fiedorek is the winner of a Pushcart Prize and an alumna of The Center for Fiction / Susan Kamil Emerging Writer Fellowship. Atta Boy is her debut novel. She lives in her native New York City with her family. Recommended Books: Kevin Berry, The Heart in Winter Paul Murray, Beesting Paul Murray, Skippy Dies Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Associate Professor at Ithaca College. He writes criticism on contemporary global literatures. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature, is forthcoming with Bloomsbury Publishing. He is the co-director of The New Voices Festival, a celebration of work in poetry, prose, and playwriting by up-and-coming young writers. Learn more about your ad choices. Today we discuss topics from her new book, The Brain Abstracted: Simplification in the History and Philosophy of Neuroscience. She largely argues that when we try to understand something complex, like the brain, using models, and math, and analogies, for example - we should keep in mind these are all ways of simplifying and abstracting away details to give us something we actually can understand. And, when we do science, every tool we use and perspective we bring, every way we try to attack a problem, these are all both necessary to do the science and limit the interpretation we can claim from our results. She does all this and more by exploring many topics in neuroscience and philosophy throughout the book, many of which we discuss today. Mazviita's University of Edinburgh page.
