What if gene editing treatments become commonplace? Explore a world where a single DNA letter gets fixed with just three little shots, transforming deadly genetic disorders into manageable conditions. Babies born unable to clear toxic ammonia from their bodies now thrive after a simple genetic correction. Future treatments could target everything from sickle cell anemia to cystic fibrosis with similar precision. Imagine celebrating your bar mitzvah with a shot that cures your ancestral lactose intolerance, or future space travelers editing their genes for better bone density in zero-G. Just one microscopic change – like fixing a computer program's typo – can mean the difference between a short, painful existence and a normal, healthy life. What if you could build up a resistance to absolutely anything through repeated exposure? Inspired by the real-life story of Tim Friede, who injected himself with increasing doses of snake venom until he developed immunity, this episode explores a world where humans can become resistant to gravity, car crashes, or even anvils to the head. From specialized training centers at the mall that progressively drop heavier objects on your skull to high school gym classes where kids graduate from Barbie cars to full-sized vehicles, discover how society would transform if human biology could adapt to literally anything. We explore how careers would change - plumbers resistant to bad smells, electricians handling live wires with bare hands - and how regional human subspecies might emerge based on local hazards. Would the Upper East Side elite compete to make their babies anvil-proof before their first birthday? In this world, your skull thickness might become your most valuable credential, and Halloween costumes would reflect our vastly more diverse physical appearances. Based on "Universal Anti-Venom May Grow Out of a Man Who Let Snakes Bite Him 200 Times" by The New York Times, May 2, 2025 https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/health/snakes-universal-antivenom-tim-friede.html?unlocked_article_code=1.F08.AC2O.wGyVMwaME67R&smid=url-share Philip will be holding a 90-minute virtual workshop "Introduction to AI for Creative People" with Women in Film San Francisco Bay Area on May 17th. We also discuss whether, as creative people, we expect our friends and family to read, watch, or listen to what we create. When Azzedine Downes became President and CEO of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in 2012, one thing was clear to him: "Talking to people who already agreed with us just isn't enough to get real results." As IFAW's Executive Vice President since 1997, Azzedine had worked closely with experts from across the sciences and decision makers from around the world. But when he became President, IFAW started bringing together what Azzedine likes to call “the unusual suspects.” Seamstresses in Malawi. Auction houses in China. Working together, IFAW's eclectic network is now helping animals and people thrive together in more than 40 countries. Azzedine has led IFAW through a groundbreaking period of geographic expansion and strategic consolidation. He's helped open offices on four continents, including IFAW's first office in the Middle East. Azzedine has also influenced international policies to create positive change on the ground. In Azzedine's first year as President, IFAW signed a historic lease agreement with a Maasai community near Amboseli National Park in Kenya, securing 16,000 acres of precious habitat for elephants. Months later, Azzedine helped establish a first-of-its-kind cooperative framework between IFAW and INTERPOL's Environmental Crime Program. For years, Azzedine has served as the Head of the Delegation to the CITES Conference of the Parties. And recently, he directed IFAW's successful campaign for membership to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).Before joining IFAW, Azzedine served as the Chief of Party for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Jerusalem and Morocco, as well as the Acting Regional Director for the United States Peace Corps in Eurasia and the Middle East. In 2015, Fast Company named Azzedine one of the “The Most 100 Creative People in Business,” and he has been listed among The NonProfit Times's “Power and Influence Top 50.” He is a member of the Global Tiger Forum Advisory Council, and he currently sits on the U.S. Trade and Environmental Policy Advisory Committee. Named to the prestigious Council for Hope of the Jane Goodall Legacy Foundation in 2023, Azzedine joins a group of prominent global thought and business leaders committed to using their influence to improve the world around us. A graduate of Providence College and Harvard University, Azzedine is fluent in Arabic, English, and French. His personal memoir, The Couscous Chronicles: Stories of Food, Love, And Donkeys from a Life Between Cultures, was published in June 2023.

This week, Cassie and Erica walk through the interview process from both a talent (job seeker) and brand (hiring manager/HR team) perspective. They've narrowed down their best interview and offer negotiation tips from their years of experience on both sides as well as all of the conversations they've had over the years as mentors to young professionals, with friends in the industry, and among the Marketing Happy Hour community to share in this episode. Here's what we're diving into: Tips for navigating the interview process as a job seeker both in person and over Zoom: the importance of preparation, being presentable and engaged, and showcasing your accomplishments alongside your personality. Tips for hiring managers conducting interview processes: the impact of transparency and caring about the talent experience (check out the Alma careers page referenced here), how to navigate assignments, and what to include in your job descriptions to narrow down your applicant pool to the *right* talent. Tips for negotiating an offer from the talent side: what you can negotiate outside of salary, and why backing up any negotiation ask with clear quantitative data is important (check out our recent episode with Tori Dunlap of Her First $100K to learn more). + For hiring managers: how to ensure your offer will be accepted! Whenever I fly, I see people on the plane who look like they are doing important work on their laptops. That may actually be a really bad idea because it is hard to do high quality work at 30,000 feet. Listen as I explain why. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22357419 We have become a pretty wasteful world. We waste a lot of food, we create a lot of packaging that goes to waste and despite our best efforts we only recycle a fraction of all the things we could. There is likely no one big solution to any of this but there are some interesting things being done you should hear about that are making a difference. Here to explain these solutions and reveal the magnitude of the waste problem is Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Edward Humes. He is author of over two dozen books. His latest is Total Garbage: How We Can Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World (https://amzn.to/3K3tXvx). Creativity sounds so magical – like it is some mystical gift some people were given that allows them to create the most wonderful things. However, creativity has been studied and the science of it is less magical and more practical. Being more creative and accomplished at anything is a skill we can all develop. We may not become the greatest or most creative at a chosen skill, but we can all become better at anything we put our mind to if we understand how. Here to explain is Anna Abraham. She is a professor and the Director of the Torrance Center for Creativity and Talent Development at the University of Georgia and author of the book, The Creative Brain: Myths and Truths (https://amzn.to/3QReQcn) When it comes to family dinner, many parents serve different food to their children – like mac and cheese or chicken nuggets because kids seem to prefer it. Is that a good idea? Listen as I reveal the dangers of dumbing down your kids' meals. https://www.npr.org/2006/11/02/6418289/break-your-childs-mac-n-cheese-diet PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! About Azzedine Downes and International Fund for Animal Welfare: When Azzedine Downes became President and CEO of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in 2012, one thing was clear to him: "Talking to people who already agreed with us just isn't enough to get real results." As IFAW's Executive Vice President since 1997, Azzedine had worked closely with experts from across the sciences and decision makers from around the world. And recently, he directed IFAW's successful campaign for membership to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Before joining IFAW, Azzedine served as the Chief of Party for the U.S. IFAW explores new ways to improve conditions for animals, people, and the place we call home—and we've been leading the way for over 50 years. The problems we confront are urgent, complicated, and resistant to change. Solving them requires fresh thinking and bold action. So we look at the issues from different angles, make unexpected connections, and challenge the way things are done. Partnering with local communities, NGOs, and governments around the globe. we create real-world solutions that make an immediate and lasting impact.

What's the first thing that goes through your mind when I say “creative person”?Depending on your experiences, your initial thoughts may inspire warm ideas like “collaborative, open, possibility thinker” or maybe, on the other side, some less positive ones like “difficult, prima donna, or snobby.”In my book Herding Tigers I wrote about five persistent myths about creative people that often lead to challenges in the workplace. On this episode, we're going to address and bust these myths. Why is busting these myths so important? First of all, perpetuating stereotypes can discourage people from embracing their own creative potential. If you've been led to believe that you can't be analytical and creative at the same time, for instance, you might shy away from opportunities that allow you to use both sets of skills. Second, these myths can impede collaboration and communication. If you're a manager who believes that creative individuals are flaky or unreliable, you might hesitate to entrust them with important projects—missing out on their unique skills and perspectives. And third, let's face it—most of us enjoy a bit of myth-busting; it's refreshing to challenge our own perspectives and grow as individuals.Today, we'll be exploring five of the most pervasive myths about creative people. We'll dissect each one, delve into its origins, and, most importantly, unveil the truth. And, if you want to delve deeper into this topic, check out chapter two of Herding Tigers, which is what I'll be reading from today. Welcome back to another episode of the Plant Based News podcast. I am joined today by renowned American author, teacher, and vegan educator Camille DeAngelis, best known for her acclaimed novel "Bones and All”. Originally from New Jersey and currently based in Washington, DC, Camille considers herself a writer for all ages. Her previous work includes novels, practical philosophy, and the Moon Guide to Ireland, which she regularly updates. She is the author of two books of nonfiction: Life Without Envy: Ego Management for Creative People and A Bright Clean Mind: Veganism for Creative Transformation. Her best known work to date – the award-winning novel “Bones and All” – was first published in 2015 and was recently turned into a film, starring Timothee Chalamet, which premiered in 2022. The novel tells the story of a young woman named Maren, who is plagued by a compulsion to eat the bones of the people she loves. The book explores themes of love, obsession, and the nature of family, as the protagonist sets out on a journey to understand her condition and find a way to live with it. After being a longtime vegetarian, Camille became vegan in 2011. She pursued her interest in the vegan movement further and in 2013 became a certified vegan lifestyle coach and educator through Victoria Moran's Main Street Vegan Academy.
