“What I particularly wanted to hit was probably the most pervasive myth about autism, which is that autistic people lack empathy” – Graeme Simsion Graeme Simsion’s first novel, ‘The Rosie Project’, was outrageously successful. The film rights were sold, the book published around the world and a new career launched. Last year, several books into his life as a bestselling author, Graeme returned to Don Tillman with ‘The Rosie Result’. Graeme joined Kylie Carlson, Coordinator of Community Learning and Partnerships, for an in-conversation at Richmond Theatrette. Introduced by a performance from Tom Middleditch, Graeme went on to discuss the autism myths he hoped to challenge with ‘The Rosie Result’, diagnosing (or not diagnosing) his characters, and the challenges in getting even a bestselling novel turned into a film. Stay tuned at the end for an update on that last bit… This is an edited recording. Thanks to Graeme Simsion, Text Publishing, Kylie Carlson, Tom Middleditch and Avenue Books. Graeme Simsion is an Australian author, screenwriter, playwright and data modeller. Yes, we get nerdy and talk about Data Modelling in this chat. Graeme changed careers relatively late in life to become an author, and achieved astonishing success with his books centred around the character Don Tillman - the Rosie Trilogy, The Rosie Project, The Rosie Effect, and now most recently The Rosie Result. Graeme kindly and gently introduced the world to Don Tillman a few years ago now, a man who has a different way of going about life - it’s never really mentioned explicitly early on in the books, but Don is a genetics professor with high functioning Asperger’s Syndrome. You’ll find out in this chat why it was so important to Graeme to write about Don this way and indeed why it’s important to celebrate neurodiversity - the idea that neurological differences like autism and ADHD are the result of normal, natural variation in the human genome. I’ll let the conversation explain the rest. If you like what you hear, Graeme is on twitter @graemesimsion See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Rosie Project was an international publishing phenomenon, with more than a million copies sold in over forty countries around the world. Now Graeme Simsion returns with the highly anticipated sequel, The Rosie Effect. Don Tillman and Rosie Jarman are now married and living in New York. Just as Don is about to announce that Gene, his philandering best friend from Australia, is coming to stay, Rosie drops a bombshell: she’s pregnant. In true Tillman style, Don instantly becomes an expert on all things obstetric. But in between immersing himself in a new research study on parenting and implementing the Standardised Meal System (pregnancy version), Don’s old weaknesses resurface. And while he strives to get the technicalities right, he gets the emotions all wrong, and risks losing Rosie when she needs him most. Graeme Simsion was born in Auckland and is a Melbourne-based writer of short stories, plays, screenplays and two non-fiction books. The Rosie Project began life as a screenplay, winning the Australian Writers Guild/Inscription Award for Best Romantic Comedy before being adapted into a novel. It went on to win the 2012 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript and has since been sold around the world to over forty countries. Sony Pictures have optioned the film rights with Graeme contracted to write the script. It won the 2014 ABIA for Best General Fiction Book and overall Book of the Year.

With Mark Lawson The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion was one of the surprise hits of last year and has been published in more than thirty countries. The protagonist Don Tillman - a socially-awkward professor who may be on the autistic spectrum - has devised a questionnaire to ask women, in his quest to find love. Graeme Simsion explains how the book started life as a screenplay, and talks about writing a romantic novel from an unexpected perspective. Delivery Man stars Vince Vaughn playing another slacker character. This time he's an under-achiever who finds out that his donations to a fertility clinic have resulted in his fathering over five hundred children, with 142 of them legally trying to find out their father's identity. Journalist and broadcaster Katie Puckrik reviews. The artist Jeff Koons broke the record for the highest price paid for a work of art by a living artist, when his Balloon Dog (Orange) sold at auction for $58,405,000 last year. A major retrospective of Koons's work is opening at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York in 2014. Jeff Koons talks to Mark about whether the vast prices paid for his art affect his work, and explains why we should not be afraid of contemplating contemporary art work. As part of Radio 4's MINT Season, looking at the world's new group of emerging economies, Front Row is exploring the cultural life of the four MINT countries. Today we move to Indonesia: arts and culture critic Amir Sidharta tells Mark about the rising trends in Indonesian standup comedy and popular music. Mark asks some of Front Row's 2013 People Of The Year about their plans for 2014. David Suchet discusses whether he will play King Lear, and Eleanor Catton talks about the film of her Booker Prize winning novel, The Luminaries. Producer: Rebecca Nicholson.
