“I just had the unpleasant sensation of hearing you referred to as my husband.” – It Happened One Night (1934)This week, returning guest Andrew Daniels joins us to break down the original screwball sensation: Frank Capra's It Happened One Night. As the first film to ever sweep the “Big Five” Oscars, this charming romantic comedy set the template for the genre, with pitch-perfect performances from Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, and enough innuendo, wit, and roadside bickering to fuel decades of imitators. We explore how Capra's Depression-era romance struck a chord with audiences, changed the course of Hollywood stardom, and remains as irresistibly funny and tender today as it was in 1934.Episode Notes:It Happened One Night (1934) was directed by Frank Capra and stars Clark Gable and Claudette ColbertSelected to the National Film Registry in 1993First film to win all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and ScreenplayNotable for:Launching the screwball comedy genreIconic scenes like the hitchhiking lesson and the “walls of Jericho”Bridging escapism and social commentary during the Great DepressionDiscussion topics include:The film's influence on romantic comedies for generationsHow it reshaped the public personas of Gable and ColbertCapra's blend of populist ideals and sharp dialogueWhy the film continues to resonate with modern audiencesFeaturing returning guest:Andrew Daniels, author of The Barstool Book of Sports: Stats, Stories, and Other Stuff for Drunken Debate Follow the Show:TwitterInstagramWebsite Music by Mike Natale

It's spring break, but of course Capeside's biggest nerds aren't going to Fort Lauderdale: they're heading to Vermont for what is apparently their traditional visit with Dawson's Aunt Gwen (Julie Bowen!). Pacey wasn't going to come, but the kids' old and previously never-mentioned friend Will Krudski (Rodney Scott) made a surprise visit to pull a Jake Hanson-- er, tell us all his deal as a working-class ne'er-do-well with daddy issues and a heart of gold and then leave for his own show (spoiler?), and since there's nothing to do in Capeside, they're going to an even smaller and duller town. Also joining is Andie, because someone has to have a crush on Will to make us think he's a viable leading man. Will Dawson stop thinking about his own reinvention long enough to notice all the eye-fucking Pacey and Joey are doing? Apparently not before their first night at Gwen's, because the sleeping arrangements end up putting Joey and Pacey in the one bed together for It Happened One Night high jinks. Back in Capeside, Fresh Fish server Shelley (Sarah Lancaster) has the hots for new busboy Henry, and Jen's not just telling her they're dating because otherwise they wouldn't have a plotline; and the surprise death of a longtime friend has Gale and Mitch reflecting on what they've lost...and could possibly regain? Opposites attract with magnetic force in this romantic road-trip delight from Frank Capra, about a spoiled runaway socialite (Claudette Colbert) and a roguish man-of-the-people reporter (Clark Gable) who is determined to get the scoop on her scandalous disappearance. The first film to accomplish the very rare feat of sweeping all five major Oscar categories (best picture, best actor, best actress, best director, and best screenplay), IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is among the most gracefully constructed and edited films of the early sound era, packed with clever situations and gags that have entered the Hollywood comedy pantheon and featuring two actors at the top of their game, sparking with a chemistry that has never been bettered.

So first thing, we have to apologize about the audio quality on this one, there was an issue with Katie's mic, and I tried to clean it up as much as possible, but it doesn't sound great, so that sucks. Hopefully it won't bother you too much, and we'll definitely do our best to prevent this from happening in the future. That said, here's It Happened One Night! Reaching back to 1934, this classic movie started the Screwball Comedy craze in Hollywood, which would eventually evolve into the Romcoms we all know and love. In this episode, Emma and Katie spend most of their time thirsting over Clark Gable, but also get around to talking about the Hayes Code, The Postal Service, Oscar bait movies of 2023, and which gashouse palooka really is the Bad Boy of the Skies.

Episode 60: PARASITE Listen in this week as break into the top ten with the 2019 South Korean film Parasite. It's our second straight movie about the conflict between rich and poor, but that's probably the extent of its similarities to It Happened One Night. Well, that and the fact that they're both great. Song Kang Ho plays the head of a very poor family in Seoul. Their prospects begin to turn around as they infiltrate a very wealthy household one-by-one. And then things take a turn. Parasite was the first and so far only non-English language film to win Best Picture. It ranks #10 on our countdown.* Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. Come back next week for the number nine, Milos Foreman's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.

Despite repeated mysterious technical difficulties, Brooke and Jeff persevered to bring you the 30th installment of this very important podcast. Was it worth all of the trouble? Of course the answer is no, probably not. But we begin with the aftermath of a date between Gil and Janice, the Nicolette Cignet photographer and Edda's friend and rival from the dance company we met way back in Episode 24: They Wanted You to Model Because of Sitzfleisch Allure (https://www.9chickweedrage.com/024). Gil is getting advice from Seth and Mark and tells them that he did not in fact bone Janice at the end of the date (which was their expectation), but instead kissed her on the left corner of her mouth. This move, according to Mark, is akin to "lighting a sensual fuse." Edda doesn't believe it, but Amos tries it and transports them to a series of famous romantic movies. First La Dolce Vita, then From Here to Eternity, Casablanca, It Happened One Night (which Jeff mistakenly places in 1939 instead of 1934, sorry!), before veering to North By Northwest and settling into the Tarzan canon. There are so many Tarzan strips, guys. It's all very, very stupid. But we soldiered on through multiple glitches and made it happen. Just for you! Also, Jeff tries really hard to explain Schrödinger's Cat to make a metaphorical point, only to fail in his explanation and then to fail to remember exactly why he was trying to make the point in the first place. The Chickweed strips we discuss this episode: You can find all of the strips either on Twitter by clicking here (https://x.com/9chickweedRAGE/status/1718430506940059796?s=20) or on Instagram by clicking here (https://www.instagram.com/p/Cy9o0MipPU7/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==). Frank Capra is well-known for such top-ranked classics as It Happened One Night, Lost Horizon, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life.  However, his 1941 film, Meet John Doe, starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, deserves more love. It's often very funny but deals with some of the darkest issues of American democracy and demagoguery.   While sometimes labelled corny, its characters grapple with moral choices and the depths of despair – all while taking on surprisingly contemporary issues of fake news, voter manipulation, mass layoffs, mob rioting and the media's craving for sensationalism.  So does this 82-year-old film speak to a new generation of film lovers?
