Today I talked to Julia Caterina Hartley about Iran and French Orientalism: Persia in the Literary Culture of Nineteenth-Century France (Bloomsbury. 2023). New translations of Persian literature into French, the invention of the Aryan myth, increased travel between France and Iran, and the unveiling of artefacts from ancient Susa at the Louvre Museum are among the factors that radically altered France's perception of Iran during the long nineteenth century. And this is reflected in the literary culture of the period. In an ambitious study spanning poetry, historiography, fiction, travel-writing, ballet, opera, and marionette theatre, Julia Hartley reveals the unique place that Iran held in the French literary imagination between 1829 and 1912. Iran's history and culture remained a constant source of inspiration across different generations and artistic movements, from the 'Oriental' poems of Victor Hugo to those of Anna de Noailles and Théophile Gautier's strategic citation of Persian poetry to his daughter Judith Gautier's full-blown rewriting of a Persian epic. Writing about Iran could also serve to articulate new visions of world history and religion, as was the case in the intellectual debates that took place between Michelet, Renan, and Al-Afghani. Alternatively joyous, as in Félicien David's opera Lalla Roukh, and ominous, as in Massenet's Le Mage, Iran elicited a multiplicity of treatments.  This is most obvious in the travelogues of Flandin, Gobineau, Loti, Jane Dieulafoy, and Marthe Bibesco, which describe the same cities and cultural practices in altogether different ways. Under these writers' pens, Iran emerges as both an Oriental other and an alter ego, its culture elevated above that of all other Muslim nations. At times this led French writers to critique notions of European superiority. But at others, they appropriated Iran as proto-European through racialist narratives that reinforced Orientalist stereotypes. Drawing on theories of Orientalism and cultural difference, this book navigates both sides of this fascinating and complex literary history. It is the first major study on the subject. In Impermanent Blackness: The Making and Unmaking of Interracial Literary Culture in Modern America (Princeton UP, 2023), Korey Garibaldi explores interracial collaborations in American commercial publishing—authors, agents, and publishers who forged partnerships across racial lines—from the 1910s to the 1960s. Garibaldi shows how aspiring and established Black authors and editors worked closely with white interlocutors to achieve publishing success, often challenging stereotypes and advancing racial pluralism in the process. Impermanent Blackness explores the complex nature of this almost-forgotten period of interracial publishing by examining key developments, including the mainstream success of African American authors in the 1930s and 1940s, the emergence of multiracial children's literature, postwar tensions between supporters of racial cosmopolitanism and of “Negro literature,” and the impact of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements on the legacy of interracial literary culture. By the end of the 1960s, some literary figures once celebrated for pushing the boundaries of what Black writing could be, including the anthologist W. S. Braithwaite, the bestselling novelist Frank Yerby, the memoirist Juanita Harrison, and others, were forgotten or criticized as too white. And yet, Garibaldi argues, these figures—at once dreamers and pragmatists—have much to teach us about building an inclusive society. Revisiting their work from a contemporary perspective, Garibaldi breaks new ground in the cultural history of race in the United States. East of Delhi: Multilingual Literary Culture and World Literature (Oxford University Press, 2023) examines literature produced, practiced, and circulated in and out of North India, focusing on the region of Awadh, from the beginning of recorded vernacular literature in the late fourteenth century to the colonial era of the early twentieth century. This book considers texts in a wide range of genres-courtly, devotional, and popular-composed in the main languages of the region: Hindavi, Persian, Brajbhasha, and Urdu. Individual chapters focus on narratives, devotional song-poems and didactic works, local courtly literary practices, and multilingual education as recorded in biographical dictionaries-anthologies. This book suggests that the multilingual and multi-genre approach is better suited to capturing the texture, complexity, and dynamics of literature in the world, and of literary history, than approaches that focus only on global circulation or models that draw centers and peripheries on a single global map. Francesca Orsini is Professor Emerita of Hindi and South Asian Literature at SOAS, University of London. After earning an undergraduate degree in Hindi at Venice University and living in Delhi, she completed her PhD at SOAS. She taught at the University of Cambridge and SOAS and held visiting positions at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania. She was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies, Harvard, and is a Fellow of the British Academy, a regional editor of the Murty Classical Library of India, and an editor of the Cambridge Studies in World Literature series. Her previous monographs include the 2009 book Print and Pleasure: Popular Literature and Entertaining Fictions in Colonial North India and the 2002 book The Hindi Public Sphere 1920-1940, Language and Literature in the Age of Nationalism. The Letters and the Law: Legal and Literary Culture in Late Imperial Russia (Northwestern UP, 2022) explores the fraught relationship between writers and lawyers in the four decades following Alexander II's judicial reforms. Nineteenth-century Russian literature abounds in negative images of lawyers and the law. Literary scholars have typically interpreted these representations either as the common, cross‑cultural critique of lawyerly unscrupulousness and greed or as an expression of Russian hostility toward Western legalism, seen as antithetical to traditional Russian values. The Letters and the Law is the first book to frame the conflict in terms of the two professions' competition for cultural authority. Anna Schur combines historical research and literary analysis to argue that the first generations of Russian trial lawyers shaped their professional identity with an eye to the celebrated figure of the writer and that they considered their own activities to be a form of verbal art. A fuller understanding of writers' antipathy to the law, Schur contends, must take into account this overlooked cultural backdrop. Laced with the better‑known critique of the lawyer's legalistic proclivities and lack of moral principle are the writer's reactions to a whole network of explicit and implicit claims of similarity between the two professions' goals, methods, and missions that were central to the lawyer's professional ideal. Viewed in this light, writers' critiques of the law and lawyers emerge as a concerted effort at protecting literature's exclusive cultural status in the context of modernization and the rapidly expanding public sphere. The study draws upon a mix of well-known and rarely studied nineteenth-century authors and texts—with particular attention paid to Fyodor Dostoevsky and Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin—and on a wide range of nonliterary sources, including courtroom speeches, guides to forensic oratory, legal treatises, and specialized press. Fantastic and informative talk with Sara Petrosillo of the University of Evansville about her new book, Hawking Women: Falconry, Gender, and Control in Medieval Literary Culture (Ohio State University Press, 2023). Listen all the way to the end for a great description of the process of hunting with birds! While critical discourse about falconry metaphors in premodern literature is dominated by depictions of women as unruly birds in need of taming, women in the Middle Ages claimed the symbol of a hawking woman on their personal seals, trained and flew hawks, and wrote and read poetic texts featuring female falconers.  Sara Petrosillo's Hawking Women demonstrates how cultural literacy in the art of falconry mapped, for medieval readers, onto poetry and challenged patriarchal control. Examining texts written by, for, or about women, Hawking Women uncovers literary forms that arise from representations of avian and female bodies. Readings from Sir Orfeo, Chrétien de Troyes, Guillaume de Machaut, Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, and hawking manuals, among others, show how female characters are paired with their hawks not to assert dominance over the animal but instead to recraft the stand-in of falcon for woman as falcon with woman. Fantastic and informative talk with Sara Petrosillo of the University of Evansville about her new book, Hawking Women: Falconry, Gender, and Control in Medieval Literary Culture (Ohio State University Press, 2023). Listen all the way to the end for a great description of the process of hunting with birds! While critical discourse about falconry metaphors in premodern literature is dominated by depictions of women as unruly birds in need of taming, women in the Middle Ages claimed the symbol of a hawking woman on their personal seals, trained and flew hawks, and wrote and read poetic texts featuring female falconers.  Sara Petrosillo's Hawking Women demonstrates how cultural literacy in the art of falconry mapped, for medieval readers, onto poetry and challenged patriarchal control. Examining texts written by, for, or about women, Hawking Women uncovers literary forms that arise from representations of avian and female bodies. Readings from Sir Orfeo, Chrétien de Troyes, Guillaume de Machaut, Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde, and hawking manuals, among others, show how female characters are paired with their hawks not to assert dominance over the animal but instead to recraft the stand-in of falcon for woman as falcon with woman. In the avian hierarchy female hawks have always been the default, the dominant, and thus these medieval interspecies models contain lessons about how women resisted a culture of training and control through a feminist poetics of the falconry practice. David performs an excerpt from Macbeth and discusses the dramatic convention of witches, what rehearsal and performance would have looked like Shakespeare's time, analyses Shakespeare in comparison with other works of the time and his experience editing Shakespeare.  David is currently Associate Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of Shakespeare and Lost Plays, for Cambridge University Press, and Mind-Travelling and Voyage Drama in Early Modern England, for Palgrave. He's also edited Thomas Dekker's Old Fortunatus for the Revels Plays series, and Dekker's If this be not a good play, the devil is in it for the Routledge Anthology of Early Modern Drama. He is co-founder and editor of the Lost Plays Database and has edited a number of books including Lost Plays in Shakespeare's England, Loss and the Literary Culture of Shakespeare's Time, and Shakespeare and Virtual Reality. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, the BBC and the Australian Book Review and he is currently editing Timon of Athens for the Arden Shakespeare 4th series.

James O'Loghlin is a comedian, television and radio host. You might know him from shows such as The New Inventors but James is also the author of ten books, including six novels for children.James was also a lawyer in a former life and his segued that experience into his new novel, our book club for this week, Criminals.It seems like just another ordinary day...Sarah is doing bar work at the club. A nice normal job while she's on stress leaving from her job as a cop. She's tending bar when a man walks into the club with a shotgun.Mary is just trying to enjoy a quiet drink. She's always enjoying a quiet drink and doesn't appreciate the loud man in the balaklava interrupting her reverie. Daydrinking isn't exactly a long term plan and so Mary decides to do something foolish.And poor Dean. He can't understand why everybody won't just get down on the ground and give him the money. He needs this and one big score could set him up for a while.In one brief flurry of activity Criminals throws Sarah, Dean and Mary's lives together and sets them on a path to explore what it means to be a criminal and how life is more than simply a matter of Black and White.Through each of his main characters James O'Loghlin explores some fundamental ideas about crime and criminality.Sarah has always wanted to be a cop. Her single dad is her idol. A lifetime police officer she has looked up to him and all he represents. But Sarah's also been disillusioned by her time on the force and is starting to wonder if following the letter of the law is the best way to understand people.Dean went to school with Sarah. It's an uncomfortable fact as he holds a shotgun in her direction but it also gets him thinking; he wasn't always a junkie burglar waiting to graduate to armed robbery.At school Dean was a footy star, but he relied on making it to first grade and when that didn't happen he was lost. Drugs and petty crime helped Dean escape until they became the thing he has to escape from. Is it possible though that there is more to his life, and can he choose a different path before it's too late.Mary seems to have it all a middle class suburban life can offer. So why does she stand in front of the shotgun, daring the man in front of her. Mary's struggling to make sense of her life and is starting to think that these men robbing the club with such abandon know more about how to live and maybe she could borrow a leaf from their book.Criminals follows this small ensemble cast through the aftermath of the robbery and into their lives, such as they are. Questions of right and wrong loom large in each of their pasts and O'Loghlin challenges us to sort through our ideas of crime and criminality to understand how we live when these categories are not so clear cut.The novel explores mental health and the ways it can shape, even steer lives and the consequences of not getting help. It's a surprisingly nuanced look at a heavily scrutinized area and while no one book could pretend to have an answer, Criminals shows us that the conversation is essential and one we all must have.Criminals is pacy and finds a balance between its action and the introspection of its protagonists. Today I wanted to indulge us with some fun, thoughtful, edge of your seat, literary sci-fi. Now that may seem like I've just thrown a whole lot of adjectives at the wall to see what sticks (and in a way I have) but stay with me, I think I'm justified…Georgina Young's debut novel Loner won the Text Prize for Young Adult novel, was commended by the CBCA as a notable book for older readers, and was shortlisted for a Prime Minister's Literary Award.Now Georgina is back with her new novel Bootstrap and it is all the adjectives I mentioned above and more.Ginsborough's famous for its chicken and leek pies and not much else. Languishing sounds way more active than what Sweeney is doing. With nothing but Hooley Dooley's on a Friday to look forward to (and Sweeney's pashed most of the available blokes there) life is looking dire.That is until a tall, dark and very out of place bloke named Bootstrap splits into Sweeney's life saying he's come to see the night that Sweeney becomes a hero!Now I could tell you that Bootstrap is full of the most outlandish cast of characters you've met in a long time…I could tell you that the book has more twists than the highway out of Ginsborough…I could mention that this is a refreshing take on the sci-fi staple of messing with your own timeline…All of that would be true but it still wouldn't capture the enormous heart that Georgina Young has infused into the most unlikable, lovable rogue that is Sweeney and the strange and beguiling figure of Bootstrap.Sweeney feels trapped in Koornang and that's the central dramatic tension of the novel. He feels like nothing will ever happen to him and little changes when the entirety of the space time continuum seems to come crashing onto his doorstep.In a lot of ways Sweeney is all of us when we are feeling the FOMO and getting down on our lives. In a much more real way he is a young gay man who is languishing in a town that doesn't have enough to offer him and is actively trying to such the life out of him.The arrival of his best friend Marnie and the enigmatic Bootstrap are still not enough to shake Sweeney's stupor. He sees one as an excuse to get drunk and the other as a quick pash when he gets there. Marnie's on her own journey into the doldrums and can't quite seem to shake her own tendency to plant her food in her mouth. These are not the heroes we need but then again Bootstrap may not deserve saving…I loved Bootstrap as much for its high octane adventuring as for its parodying small town charm (or was it desperation? Sweeney is really unsure about his nostalgia) In highlighting that regional Australia is a tough place to grow up it also shows us a world where every corner holds a memory. It's all in stark contrast to the figure of Bootstrap who is a fugitive from his own past.There's an incredibly clever and thoughtful crop of mind bending speculative and science fiction popping up in Australia lately and I am here for it. As Aboul-ela writes in his introduction to his new translation, Warda is someone who “somehow manages to embody both the historical and the unimaginable.”  Warda is available, in Hosam Abou-ela's translation, from Yale University Press. Hosam also writes about Warda in his Domestications: American Empire, Literary Culture, and the Postcolonial Lens. Hosam's translation of Sonallah Ibrahim's Stealthis available from New Directions. Sonallah Ibrahim's Zaat, in Tony Calderbank's translation,is, unfortunately, out of print. Hosam Aboul-ela is also the editor of the Arabic list at Seagull Books, an award-winning Kolkata-based publisher. One of the first books it published was The Stillborn by Arwa Salih.
