Spent a week on a work and mini-birthday trip, and got some serious digging in at a number of spots, both places I'd been and some I'd never been to before. Some great come-ups and here's just a few of stack I brought back with me! Hope you dig it. Thought it was a good time to do a tribute to one of my favorite indie labels, PM Records. Listening to their music is kind of like a sci-fi-jazz-adventure, where the sound isn't easily labeled but the music is taking the listener in all kinds of directions while keeping a solid groove. Hope you dig it! Tracklist: Steve Grossman, Doug Riley, Stone Alliance, Elvin Jones, Stone Alliance, Steve Grossman, Pat Labarbera, Don Thompson
This is a good word from the Good Word with Commissioner Doug Riley. Commissioner Riley is the Territorial Commander of The Salvation Army in the western U.S. You may remember him from previous episodes of this podcast on gratitude and the Christmas story. Here, he preached at the 2022 commissioning and ordination meeting of The Salvation Army in the western U.S., when the Army commissions those in training as Salvation Army officers or pastors. And he had one question: What is your purpose? While we often start with ourselves and struggle through our identity, importance and impact, Riley said we fail to see the answers are found in understanding God's reason for putting us here on earth. God's purpose, he said, is simple: To know him and to glorify him. Our purpose is found not in what we do, but who we know. WHAT'S YOUR CAUSE? Take our quiz. RECEIVE A GOOD WORD. This season, we've been talking a lot about hope in The Salvation Army. Hope, by definition, is a feeling of optimism—it's based on expecting a positive outcome. That's what Commissioner Doug Riley will tell you. He's the Territorial Commander of The Salvation Army in the western U.S. He was commissioned as a Salvation Army officer—or pastor—alongside his wife Colleen in 1995. He holds an MBA from Pepperdine University and has now spent nearly three decades in pastoral leadership. And he'll also tell you, our hope is in Christ. This is the time of year we celebrate the power of hope, the most wonderful time of the year—Christmas. And just as there was great hope for those living in the time of Jesus' birth, there is great hope for us today. Commissioner Riley is on the show today to share more about the hope we find in the Christmas story and its reminder that darkness will give way to the light. EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. A four month hiatus means an embarrassing backlog of music to share! We start with selections from our favourite recent compilations, including offerings from the Numero Group, VampiSoul, and Votary. A tribute to the late Doug Riley follows and then jazz, some obligatory Cuban cuts, and the regular Waxing Deep mix-up. Enjoy!
