Send us a textThe conversation with Raimana Jones from Atelier Jones Design delves deep into the heart of what makes good design truly exceptional—craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from architectural legends like Alvar Aalto and Walter Gropius, we explore how the most revered designers extended their vision beyond buildings to encompass furniture, lighting, and complete environments.Raimana shares his journey through fabrication and making, revealing the powerful feedback loop between crafting with your hands and designing with your mind. We unpack how this tactile understanding shapes thoughtful design decisions that simply can't emerge from digital processes alone. The discussion turns to a concerning trend—the gradual disappearance of workshop culture from design education, as hands-on making gives way to digital tools and 3D printing. What truly elevates this conversation is our exploration of material understanding as the essence of craftsmanship. Just as Tadao Ando mastered concrete through deep connection with the material, Romana's elegant steel kitchens showcase how intimate knowledge transforms ordinary materials into extraordinary designs. While budget realities often dictate the level of craft possible in projects, we discover inventive approaches to maintaining craftsmanship even with constraints.Whether you're a practicing designer, architecture enthusiast, or someone who appreciates the beauty of well-crafted spaces, this episode offers a compelling reminder of why material engagement matters. As James Dyson wisely noted, "The visceral experience of making things by hand is a wise teacher." Join us for an inspiring discussion about rediscovering play, embracing failure, and cultivating a deeper connection with the materials that shape our world.Key Episode Links:- https://www.atelierjonesdesign.co.nz/pages/about-usChapters:0:00 - Introduction to Craft in Design5:00 - Exploring Cross-Media Design Processes11:15 - Workshop Culture and Material Play20:25 - The Design Process: Sketching to Making27:00 - Understanding Materials Deeply33:48 - Budget Constraints and Craft Quality41:47 - Craftsmanship in Architecture48:30Please Like and Subscribe it really helps :) Follow us on @designpriciplespod on Instagram and if you wish to contact us hit our DMs or our personal pages. THIS EPISODE Trash Pandas first baseman Sam Brown joins the podcast this week to discuss his childhood in California, his journey to Rocket City, and how his family's athletic background pushed him to become a better baseball player. ABOUT THE HOST Josh Caray's baseball roots stretch from Atlanta to St. Louis to Chicago to Cooperstown. The grandson of Hall of Famer Harry Caray, son of the legendary Skip Caray, and half-brother Chip Caray is the TV voice of the St. Louis Cardinals, Josh is the Play-by-Play voice of the Rocket City Trash Pandas.
We were truly blessed to have Jim Brown join us in the studio to share his story! Jim and his family have been a cherished part of our church community for nearly 20 years. You may recognize his son, Sam, who regularly volunteers on the worship team (we've linked his story below!). In this episode, Jim and Sarah spend a few minutes catching up before diving into his story; a journey marked by faith, challenges, and the grace of God. Jim introduces a concept called The Circle of Obedience, something that shaped his own walk with the Lord and became a guiding principle he later passed on to his sons. Jim came to know Jesus at the age of six. His father worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, so the family moved often, but they always stayed connected to a church wherever they landed. It was after hearing some hellfire and brimstone preaching that Jim made the decision to follow Christ, longing to spend eternity with Him. But like many of us, his path wasn't without detours. In middle school, Jim began stepping outside that circle of obedience, not rejecting God but leaning on his own wisdom and chasing his own ambitions. His journey took him through multiple colleges and even across the Atlantic to play American football in England. Yet despite the adventure, nothing brought lasting fulfillment. Then came a turning point when his mother introduced him to Trisha, a young woman who would become his wife. Jim was returning to the faith while Trisha was beginning her own faith journey. Together, they desired to build a Christ-centered family. But the road ahead wasn't easy. Marriage proved more difficult than expected. Two years in, they welcomed their first son, Hunter, who was born with severe special needs—a reality they still navigate today. As life picked up speed with the births of their other sons, Sam and Henry, the challenges mounted. But so did God's faithfulness. What stands out most in Jim's story is his honesty. He doesn't shy away from the hard parts—but through it all, he stayed rooted: committed to God, to Trisha, and to his sons. And in that commitment, he rediscovered the fullness of life within the circle of obedience. His testimony is a beautiful reminder that life with Jesus, even in the struggle, is far richer than anything the world offers.Sam Brown's testimony (Jim's son!), Episode 86Want to share your story on The Stories Collective podcast in 2025? Send us a textWhat happens when the people who shape our cities, schools, and homes are missing from the public conversation about our built environment? Award-winning architect Lisa Webb joins us to unpack architecture's growing crisis of relevance in New Zealand.Following her thought-provoking piece in the NZIA Bulletin, Lisa shares her concerns about architects becoming increasingly sidelined in discussions about housing, climate resilience, and community building. "We have a lack of voice, a lack of mandate, and a lack of mana," she observes, pointing to recent political attacks on the profession that went largely unchallenged. We explore the disconnect between how architects communicate their value (often through beautiful images) versus what clients and communities truly value about architectural services. As one colleague noted, "Pretty pictures are scrollable but have no real sense of the agency the architect brought to bear." This insight leads us to discuss meaningful alternatives – sharing client testimonials, documenting transformed lives, and telling the stories behind successful projects. The conversation reveals a profession at a crossroads: highly trained professionals with unique holistic oversight capabilities who nonetheless struggle to assert their relevance. We discuss how smaller practices in particular face challenges being heard, while questioning whether the profession's traditional reluctance toward marketing has become self-defeating in today's media landscape.Lisa challenges listeners to move beyond waiting for someone else to advocate for architecture. Whether through greater engagement with the NZIA, strategic marketing, or simply telling better stories about what architects actually do, the path forward requires collective action from a profession that designs not just buildings, but lives.Key Links:- https://www.studiolwa.co.nz/- https://www.nzia.co.nz/member-area/resources/news/2025/architecture-in-crisis-why-our-relevance-is-fading/- https://www.nzia.co.nz/member-area/resources/news/2025/a-response-to-architecture-in-crisis/Chapters:0:00 - Introduction to Lisa Webb6:00 - The Problem with Architectural Advocacy16:40 - Lost Voices in the Housing Crisis26:30 - Architecture as Service vs. Product35:25 - Marketing Architecture: Breaking Taboos43:45 - Finding Power in the Profession54:30 - Collective Action and Moving ForwardFollow us on @designpriciplespod on Instagram. If you wish to contact us hit our DMs or email us on info@designprinciplespod.com

Townhall Review - November 2, 2024 We dive into the final days before the 2024 election. The spotlight falls on President Biden as his recent controversial remarks about Trump supporters stirred the political landscape, overshadowing Kamala Harris's own campaign push. Hugh Hewitt sits down with Matt Continetti of the Washington Free Beacon to analyze the potential impact of Biden's remarks. Matt Whitaker of the Trump campaign shares how this may sway undecided voters in the final hours. Turning to the congressional races, Hugh talks with Nevada Senate candidate and war veteran Sam Brown, who's challenging incumbent Jacky Rosen. On the House side, Orange County's 47th district is heating up as Scott Baugh campaigns to secure a GOP victory in a tightly contested California district. Hugh investigates. Former race car driver Danica Patrick shares her motivations for supporting Trump in a conversation with Charlie Kirk, signaling an interesting shift among influential voices in this election cycle. As Election Day approaches, Trish Regan closes the show with a reminder of the stakes involved, urging listeners to ensure their voices are heard at the polls. Every vote will shape the future, and this year's election could set the course for years to come.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hugh summarizes the early voting data and reviews Vice President Harris's sit down with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay with Bret Baier, David Drucker, Byron York, and Brent Gardner. Del Bigtree grew up in the "crystal cathedral" of liberalism in Colorado. But now, he's an exile from the Democratic left. Del talks to Charlie about working on the RFK campaign, becoming a backer of Donald Trump, and how the party of "my body, my choice" became the party that wants to forcibly inject children with untested shots. Plus, Nevada Senate candidate Capt. Sam Brown talks about finding God after nearly losing his life in Afghanistan, why he entered politics, and why there's so much optimism about him stealing a Senate seat off the Democrats in the Silver State. This is an extraordinary story on many levels – about the power and sanctuary of music, about what it took for bands to get noticed in the ‘70s, about how a teenager obsessed with King Crimson eventually joined the band and about the struggles of “a rabid Henry Cow fan trying to get on Top of the Pops”. Jakko Jakszyk is a fabulous storyteller, both in his memoir ‘Who's the Boy With The Lovely Hair?' and on this podcast with the two of us. Among the highlights … … two things musicians need to know. … why the divisive appeal of music and comedy is so similar. … life in a band where “Stravinsky meets the Barron Knights”. … “Who'll be the singing Jack Russell?” Doing voice-overs as a piece of toast and a baked potato with a Yorkshire accent. ... the quaint Englishness of Soft Machine, Caravan and King Crimson and why they were like “a holiday resort no-one knew about”. … why there are even more idiots in advertising than the music business. … the rigours of the Melody Maker Folk Rock Contest, aged 17, judged by Tommy Vance, Bob Harris and Brian May of Queen. … the militant wing of the Adrian Belew Fan Club. … Dave Robinson's sage advice after telling him he was “unfashionably heterosexual”. ... why Robert Fripp is more Miles Davis than Frank Zappa and the longest audition in history. …the complications of the King Crimson reunion caused by one person who shall remain nameless – “though let's call him Greg Lake”. … “two screaming lead guitars and a trumpet, what could possibly go wrong?” … and working with Pete Sinfield, Peter Hawkins, Sam Brown and Nigel Planer. In this week's episode I have Sam Brown on to share the story of the buck he recently killed in North Carolina. This story is absolutely CRAZY. As I'm sure many of you are aware, in bow hunting sometimes everything goes perfect, and sometimes it doesn't. Some hunter's who place a less than ideal shot on a deer will attempt to track the animal, and once they fail to recover the animal, the story ends there. That is not the case with this story. Sam's story is an example of perseverance and dedication to completing a harvest ethically, after making the mistake of a non-lethal shot on a deer. You definitely don't want to miss this one. On Friday's Mark Levin Show, thanks to the open Biden/Harris border we have tens of thousands of convicted illegal alien murderers and sexual criminals roaming our streets who were released from their country and sent to America. Kamala does not care about women's rights or children's rights while we have the most slavery since the Civil War. Also, we have an exceedingly immoral administration in Washington D.C. that despises Israel, from Biden and Harris to Blinken and Kirby. If Israel didn't exist we would be the ones targeted by Iran, who has already attacked our troops without any response from Biden. The government is not in service to Democrat oligarchs and we must defend it with whatever platform we have. Later, Mark is joined by military veteran and candidate Sam Brown about his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat in Nevada against a radical leftist democrat, and about his service and injuries sustained from a terrorist roadside bomb. Mark also speaks with journalist and author Miranda Devine about her new book The Big Guy: How a President and His Son Sold Out America. Learn more about your ad choices. Today Bill talks with Jessica Taylor, the editor for Senate and Governor Races at the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter. In the podcast she discussed the key Senate races for the 2024 election, including: Montana - Jessica rates this race as lean Republican, with incumbent John Tester (D) being the underdog against Republican challenger Tim Sheehy. Ohio - Jessica rates this race as a toss-up between incumbent Sherrod Brown (D) and Republican challenger Bernie Moreno. Nevada - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Jackie Rosen (D) and Republican challenger Sam Brown as lean Democratic. Arizona - Jessica rates the race between Ruben Gallego (D) and Kari Lake (R) as lean Democratic. Michigan - Jessica rates this open seat race as a toss-up between Democrat Elyssa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers. Wisconsin - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Tammy Baldwin (D) and Republican challenger Eric Hovde as lean Democratic. Pennsylvania - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Bob Casey (D) and Republican challenger David McCormick as lean Democratic. Maryland - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Ben Cardin's (D) successor, Angela Alsobrooks, and Republican challenger, former Governor Larry Hogan as likely Democratic. Overall, Jessica assesses that the Democrats currently have less than a 25% chance of holding onto their Senate majority, given the tough defensive map they face in 2024.Today Bill strongly encourages listeners to go to ActBlue.com to financially support Democratic Senate candidates that he believes are important, including John Tester, Sherrod Brown, Angela Alsobrooks, Ruben Gallego, Alyssa Slotkin, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and Colin Allred. He stresses the importance of Democrats holding the Senate in order to support a potential President Kamala Harris. SERIES 3 EPISODE 18: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump has doubled down on his defiling of Arlington National Cemetery. Title 32, Part 553, Subpart C: Memorial Services and Ceremonies at Army National Military Ceremonies will not include partisan political activities. Trump's team exploited a memorial service at Arlington on Monday, broke the law by privately photographing and filming it, physically assaulted Arlington National Cemetery staff who asked him to stop, he gave a thumbs up and smiled idiotically while literally standing on the graves of dead U-S military heroes, and now they have turned it into an online campaign advertisement – by definition, a partisan political activity. This could've been trivial. It could've been “there was a miscommunication.” Not even an apology – like anybody in the Trump campaign were human enough, or honest enough, or RESPECTFUL OF OUR WAR DEAD ENOUGH to apologize. Just “misunderstanding.” No. They blamed the Cemetery staffer, they blamed the media, they blamed Vice President Harris for not being there to commemorate the sad anniversary of deaths in Afghanistan – the commemoration Trump has illegally turned into a campaign AD – the commemoration Trump skipped last year and the year before. Because to Trump, and to this robot JV Vance, those buried AT Arlington are just another product, just another SELL, just another gimmick, just another BRAND NAME. And they got the brand name wrong. Trump thug Chris LaCivita wrote that Arlington "most hollowed" ground. Corrupted news outlets like The New York Times covered for it by claiming he wrote "hallowed." Hallowed, is Arlington. Hollowed, is Trump's brain. TRUMP IS NOW MORE DANGEROUS THAN EVER. Another new round of polls underscores: he's losing, and dragging down the down-ballot MAGA GOP: a total swing in four states of 25 points to Harris. She leads by one in Arizona, two in Georgia and Nevada, and has cut it to one in North Carolina. The Fox poll in Arizona scores the Senate as Ruben Gallego 56, Kari Lake 41. How is Kari lake going to be able to afford to buy 900 more camera filters THIS late in the race? The Fox poll in North Carolina scores the Governor's race as Josh Stein 54 Mark Robinson 43. The Fox poll in Nevada scores the Senate race as Jacky Rosen 55 Sam Brown 41. TO LEAVEN THE MOOD A LITTLE: A comedian named Dan Wilbur has done a spot-on impression of JD Vance trying to be a human for 9 minutes at a donut shop. It's better if you go watch it. It's not bad if you listen to it here. B-Block (25:31) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Texas political hitman Ken Paxton sends nine armed troops to 87-year old Democratic woman's home because she registered voters. CNN/Gary Tuchman "Uncommitted Voter" scandal worsens: the guy is now selling t-shirts. And asked about phones for kids during emergencies at school Jesse The Idiot Watters thinks that means HIS emergency when he has to call them in math class. C-Block (36:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I was talking about Bill Clinton yesterday and I think it's time to tell the entire story of how NBC tried to blackmail me into NOT quitting the Clinton-Lewinsky MSNBC show in 1998 because it made them too much money. An emissary from then NBC News President Andy Lack threatened to sue me and get me blacklisted from television AND make sure my parents wound up homeless.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
