In this episode, we are exploring the alchemy, the mystery and the magic of partnerships. For me it is such an intriguing element of creativity and of entrepreneurship. How do they work? Is it about divide and conquer? is it about contrast, connection and friendship? How are decisions made and conflicts resolved? How can you nurture and enliven them in the long term? How do they impact creativity? Can they be more profitable? Faster moving? More impactful? We are very lucky that in this episode we are joined by Arabella Preston and Charlotte Semler co-founders of two brands - Votary and Verden. Both of these brands are elegant, intelligent, considered and clean. Both have strong identities, stories and frankly cult followings. This is the story of a professional relationship that became a friendship. A chance conversation about skincare became a walk around the Selfridges beauty hall and then that moment of 'shall we?'. Skincare brand Votary was launched in 2015 and thrived. Some years later in 2021, Verden was launched offering fragrance for bath, body and home.We are going to explore these two exemplary brands, their story, their interrelationship and the partnership that binds all of this together. So if you have ever had that moment of wondering about someone that you would like to go into business with or if you are ten years down the line and simply interested to know how others share decisions, celebrate their differences and relate to risk and to failure and chance, then this is for you. According to Statistics Canada, Canadians enjoyed dining out prior to the pandemic, spending $2,775 or just over one-quarter of their total food spending at restaurants in 2019. Eating out had become a way of life. Flash forward to today and over half (51.2%) of food services and drinking places do not know how long they can continue to operate before considering closure or bankruptcy. Saddled with massive government debt, rising food costs, ongoing supply chain issues and a labour shortage, few would disagree that the restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit during the pandemic. Jessie Votary of Ramshackle Industries in Stratford, Ontario knows this all too well, and yet not a single one of the employees in her four restaurants was let go despite three government mandated shut downs. A few of her employees were even able to buy homes. Is Jessie on to something? We're finding out in this podcast as Jessie shares her people over profit philosophy with us, and her unusual relationship with her financial advisor at RBC, Tina Tamasi
In this episode of Gritty Pretty Radio, Danielle Gay (beauty director & executive editor) and Rose Garnett (beauty writer) sit down with the founder of skincare brand Votary, Arabella Preston. Six years on and Votary is renowned for its luxurious, vegan formulas that come housed in sustainable packaging. From taking the leap of faith to start her own business to the importance of sustainability and the makeup tips (and products) she thinks everyone should know about, the trio chatted about everything and anything during this episode.PRODUCTS MENTIONED:Votary Rose Geranium Cleansing Oil, $95 [https://fave.co/3krYarC]Votary Super Seed Serum, $150 [https://fave.co/3c78iBL]Votary Intense Night Facial Oil, $270 [https://fave.co/30edq4r]Votary Radiance Reveal Mask, $170 [https://fave.co/3c6cq4M]Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser, $64 [https://www.mecca.com.au/nars/pure-radiant-tinted-moisturiser/V-013475.html]Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, $43 [https://www.mecca.com.au/nars/radiant-creamy-concealer-caramel/I-015509.html]Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, $68 [https://www.mecca.com.au/hourglass/ambient-lighting-powder-dim-light/I-016173.html]Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge, $54 [https://www.bobbibrown.com.au/product/2342/20488/makeup/lips/lip-color/pot-rouge-for-lip-cheeks/new-shades#/shade/Powder_Pink]Estee Lauder Little Black Primer, $48 [https://www.esteelauder.com.au/product/631/34319/product-catalog/makeup/little-black-primertm/tint-amplify-set]Kevyn Aucoin Precision Eye Definer, $46 [https://www.mecca.com.au/kevyn-aucoin/the-precision-eye-definer/V-024172.html]We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live, work and record this podcast on, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. In this episode, Dr Louise Newson talks to Arabella Preston, co-founder of Votary skin company, about her background as a make-up artist and what prompted her to start creating cleansing and facial oils from her kitchen table. Together they discuss how to best care for your skin and how to know what products to buy among the crowded skincare marketplace. Arabella discusses the almost taboo topic of female facial hair and how to deal with it. She also talks openly about recognising her own early signs of perimenopause and what she has learnt about the impact of hormone changes on the skin. Arabella's 3 top tips for looking after your skin: Make sure you're cleansing your skin properly using a non-foaming product and a proper face cloth, every day. The best thing to do for your skin when it comes to anti-aging is to wear a good SPF (suncream) that suits your skin and wear it every day, all year round. Explore active ingredients to help your skin, like retinol and retinoids, they are a vitamin A derivative and great for menopausal skin. Dan Rosario is a local filmmaker, artist, musician and Police Detective in Worcester, MA with the best teeth in the biz. He's an amazing director, DP, Visual effects artist, and has an acute knowledge of gear and technical film language. We're always curious about his Police work as it's a very unique dual career life that he leads. In this installment of the Gosho, Nichiren recounts the days of his pardon and return from Sado. The actual events of proof of his clarity of understanding of the teachings and sutras of Shakyamuni's Buddhism. Even important leaders of Samurai are converted to Nichiren's guidance as Kamakura is once again attacked by internal revolt and Mongol invasion.
In Closing, Nichiren sums up the actions of a practitioner of MyoHoRenGeKyo and the ultimate practice of Buddhism as a proper member of society and the expectations of long held 'beliefs'. He firmly acknowledges his place in the canon of Buddhism.
Nichiren delves deeply into the historical events surrounding his remonstration to the Shogunate rulers and leaders of other Buddhist schools to correct the turmoil of Japan. The response of the attempted beheading and the following exile, the conditions in exile and the ensuing debate are all used as validation of Nichiren's preaching and the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and MyoHoRenGeKyo.
Nichiren recounts one of the many remonstrations he experienced with Hei no Saemon as a tale of upholding Buddhism and our resolve in practice in "Life".

Continuing our conversation from last week's episode about The Anti Hero, I CARE A LOT is a Netflix film with an intriguing concept about a con-woman who dupes old people out of their money. It sparked a conversation at Votary about motivation in main characters. How important is it that we understand a character's motives? Why do they do what they do? In this episode Jono, Jamin, Cody, and Mike talk about the film and it's many confusing themes, interesting or ridiculous characters, it's audacity, and if we should have named this I DON'T CARE AT ALL. SPOILER ALERT as they say! If you haven't watched the film Tenet yet, then I don't recommend listening to this episode. The team at Votary get pretty excited for new movies that come out from notable directors, so naturally we all had to see Tenet in theaters when they finally opened back up. Not only was it strange to be in a theater without anybody in there, but it was also strange to experience a movie that was so over hyped and so underwhelming simultaneously. Each of us have differing opinions on the film, but we waited to mull over them until we hit record. It's a departure from our usual marketing and video industry talks, but we hope you enjoy it.
Jed, Mike, Cody, and Jono talk about what Votary does, why we do it, why people are obsessed with authenticity, and discuss the pandemic and how it has affected us.
Jed, Jono, Cody, and Mike all talk about their experiences starting off at Votary Films. Jed talks about the struggles of starting a small business, especially during a recession. Jono talks about his desire to be a creative filmmaker in a largely corporate environment. Mike makes noises into the mic and talks about quitting his long term career of making sandwiches in order to pursue something deeper. Cody talks about texting while driving in order to send the most important email of his life - to Mike at Votary in order to work with us.

She also raves about her talented chefs and mixologists, Southern-style comfort foods like Colonel Collins’ fried chicken and waffles, and the joy of running farm-oriented, locally-sourced restaurants, run by workers, owned by workers, and shared with the community. https://www.ramshackleindustries.com A Covid World Music Video Part Of That World Music Video SUPPORT A LOCAL BUSINESS LIKE: 100 Mile Produce Mountainoak Cheese

Welcome back to my podcast! I have been busy recording with some incredibly knowledgable and inspiring guests for this season and I can’t wait to share with you! For those of you who are new to the podcast, I’m Tori Boughey a Holistic Health & Life Coach and founder of TBalance. I strive to help people connect with, value and look after themselves and my mission is to help individuals become the best version of themselves by looking at all aspects of life (relationships, career/purpose, food, spirituality & movement). One of the greatest places to start is by tuning into who you are and how comfortable you feel in your skin. Which allows me perfectly to introduce my first guest in this series; Marie Hansen. Marie is one of the most beautifully radiant and glowing people I know - yet she has struggled massively over the years with skin conditions ranging from rosacea to eczema. In this episode she talks about how the environment she lives in, the way she fuels herself, her state of mind and most importantly what she puts on her skin is imperative to how it looks and feels. Since recording this episode I have gone au-naturel with my skincare products & supplements. Here’s a list of what I’ve been using: Votary skincare (I’ve actually used this for a while, it’s incredible):CleanserDay oil Night oil Better You Vitamin D sprayDoTerra Essential oilsJojoba Carrier oil Kingfisher Toothpaste You can find Marie on Instagram @marietheresehansen or @aeviwellness
