Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey's Interview with SujataSujata is a British-Indian singer and songwriter based in London. Raised in Calcutta by her musical family and steeped in the Bengali Folk Music tradition, her focus moved to Pop and Rock soon after she settled in England. Inspired by Janis Joplin, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, George Harrison and her own cross-cultural upbringing, Sujata's songs present a unique fusion of Rock, Pop, Blues and Indian sounds – sitars and tablas with guitars and drums. Her powerful, potent lyrics reflect the challenges of life and honour the human spirit. Welcome to another in our Backstage episode of Roots Music Rambler. These are short interviews Frank and Falls are able to grab backstage (or just somewhere in person rather than on our virtual, longer-form interview episodes) and catch up briefly. This week, Falls caught up with his fellow Pikeville, Ky., product Brandon Scott Coleman, a multi-genre virtuoso guitarist who plays said instrument for the new Cincinnati-based folk rock band Barnweaver. They released their self-titled debut album this summer and it is fantastic. Coleman told us the story of how the band started in a chance meeting between singer/guitarist Kyle Swensen and bass player Bennet Miller in a Kroger. When they brought Coleman and drummer Andrew Gillum in to be session players for what was to be an album for the duo, the chemistry clicked and they knew instantly this was a four-piece band instead. The “guitar virtuoso” label isn't just a hyperbole, either. Coleman regularly plays with Kentucky-based cellist Ben Sollee, has toured with Grammy-award winner Dan Pugach, plays in his own jazz fusion trio, and has worked as a producer, arranger, music publishing house editor and free-lance musician for many years. Two Pikeville boys talking on a podcast will inevitably bring up some inside-Pike County references, so prepare yourself for that. (Do you know how to pronounce “Marrowbone,” properly?) Multi-instrumentalist Zoh Amba is widely known in the avant-garde jazz world for their remarkable talent as a saxophonist. Having cemented their reputation as a natural improviser, they now turn their attention to seemingly new territory that is really a homecoming: gritty, Appalachian folk-rock music. In their debut singer-songwriter record, titled Eyes Full, Zoh Amba studies the culture of their hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee, picking up the guitar as a main instrument for the first time. With every voice-cracking cry, Zoh Amba embodies the troubles of hardworking small-town people, telling their stories in musical settings that are not sophisticated, but raw and authentic instead. Can you believe it! Six years ago I started this podcast at the height of COVID on a complete whim. Never thought I'd be doing this for more than a few weeks let alone six freaking years! And what a way to celebrate by bringing back my first-ever guest, Staunton, Va.-based singer-songwriter Scott Miller. Scott cut his teeth in the mid-90s during the burgeoning alt.country or no-depression or insurgent country scene that never truly got off the ground. Signed to country legend Steve Earle's E-Squared Label, Scott's band the V-Roys released two dynamite albums before the band split and Scott started his prolific solo career. In this episode, Scott catches us up on what he's been up to since he last joined awhile ago. We talk about his latest single the ingenious Like a Simile from his forthcoming new record. Scott also touches on a new vinyl-only compilation album and dishes on how he balances his music career with his life on his Shenandoah Valley farm. Brooklyn-based folk-rock band The Lone Bellow have stuck through thick and thin for the past 15 years. Their creative output has been fairly consistent, only disrupted recently by a burglary on the road. Strangely, the thieves who broke into their tour van stole the hard drives containing the vocal takes for their latest record and left the precious instruments behind. Still, the financial burden was significant enough to delay the release of What a Time to Be Alive. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, the trio had their second shot at realizing their vision.  Now back on the road after a short break to promote their new album across the US, The Lone Bellow is once again ready to welcome “the alchemy of everybody together in the room” on stage. Rob interviews guitarist/vocalist Thom LaFond from the Colorado based band BANSHEE TREE! *** BIO: BANSHEE TREE is an indie psychedelic pop/rock band with sharply-written songs, jazz-inspired guitar solos, saxophone textures, and grooves that nod to the dance floor, they've spent nearly a decade evolving their sound. That fusion reaches a new peak with Bad Luck, a restless and unapologetically diverse album that captures a celebrated band chasing down new horizons. For years, Banshee Tree's evolution took place not in the recording studio, but onstage. A weekly residency at a speakeasy in Boulder, Colorado, gave the musicians an opportunity to reach beyond their origins as a swing band, while the addition of new members — including veterans of Denver's funk and punk-rock scenes — helped broaden the group's influences. Banshee Tree began gigging in other cities, too, busking with street performers in New Orleans and sharing late-night jam sessions with bands in the Pacific Northwest. In this episode, I shine the spotlight on The Unfaithful Servants through a conversation with singer, guitarist, and songwriter Dylan Stone From Vancouver Island's roots scene to a week immersed at IBMA in Chattanooga, the Servants have built a sound that slips past easy labels: tight three- and four-part harmonies, fearless arrangements, and a blend of bluegrass, folk, alt-country, and Americana that still feels unmistakably like one band.Dylan walks me through the Servants' arc: his partnership with mandolinist Jesse Cobb (a founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters), the jolt of energy when fiddle phenom Quinn Etheridge-Peddon joined, and the final puzzle piece in bassist Mark Johnson. We discuss the chemistry that's palpable onstage and how trust enables them to push beyond genre boundaries while always prioritizing the song.Their new album, Fallen Angel (out October 17), captures that identity. The band converted Quinn's basement into a studio. Who is David Ackles??  He was a groundbreaking singer-songwriter in the late 1960s and early 1970s who released four critically acclaimed albums and then seemingly disappeared.  We speak with author Mark Brend who has written a great book on David's life called Down River In Search of David Ackles.

Auf dem folgt er konstant dem musikalischen Stil seines Debütalbums („Everything Has A Life“, 2023) – einer Champer-Pop Mischung zwischen Folk-Rock, Psychedelia verwoben mit Synthesizern, Streichern und Piano. Beeinflusst von Künstler*innen wie Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens oder Bright Eyes, hat J Mahon mit „Begin Again, Again“ zwölf neue Tracks kreiert, die ihn zudem als wunderbaren Geschichtenerzähler herausstellen.
