Together with the new folk rock phenomena Gangar, Mattias Thedens has made a ruckus in the Norwegian folk scene recently. The band's irresistible blend of Norwegian folk tunes, old-school rock, youthful energy and unapologetic stage presence is definitely making people pay attention. In this conversation with Mattias we speak about the idea behind the band, how folk rock essentially is a bit silly and how to use that to your advantage. Mattias shares some of his experience when it comes to stage presence and showmanship, and how this plays in to getting people dancing and partying. There's a moment in singer/songwriter Nora O'Connor's new album My Heart when you realize just how special her talent is. By admission, the Chicago-based musician is more comfortable in the background, singing backup and playing various instruments with such Americana luminaries like Neko Case, the Decembrists, Robbie Fulks, among others. But for the first time in 18(!) years, Nora is back with a solo album—her third—called My Heart, released in early October. And it's about midway through the fourth song on the album “Cambridge Cold” when you understand why My Heart is such an impeccable listen, and is exactly the kind of music the world needs. Indeed, Nora's songs make you feel at home, no matter where you are. With a soothing voice reminiscent of Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and Stevie Nicks, Nora has been an in-demand harmony vocalist for two decades, and when she sings you feel like everything is going to be okay. In this episode of For Songs, Nora provides a refreshing take on her music, her career, and how a decade-plus of supporting Neko Case and others made her want to dip back into her own musical well. We discuss about four songs from the album—Sore, Cambridge Cold, the album's one cover It's Alright Now, and Fare Thee Well. Nora walks us through how these songs came to be and how performing outdoor shows during the COVID lockdowns unlocked her creative juices. So sit back and listen in as Nora O'Connor joins me for this episode of For Songs!

On this episode of The Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is joined by Jory Avner! Jory describes his music as lyrical, narrative, sentimental with transitions into angry, expressive rock music. Jory speaks about how he uses music and performing as a form of therapy and how he tends to escape from everything going on around him when he begins performing for a live audience. Pipeman and Jory talk about how if the artist can get lost in their own music, the audience will never be able to. Jory share how he writes for himself and he always makes music that he wants to hear as opposed to aiming to create big hits that he doesn't even enjoy performing. Make sure to follow Jory Avner on all major social media platforms so you can stay up to date with new releases and live events: www.instagram.com/joryavner/?hl=enYou can find Jory's music through his website here: https://www.joryavner.com/ SOFT ROCK WITH FOLK AND SYNTH INFLUENCES JORY AVNER TO RELEASE POWERFUL NEW SINGLE ‘PLAYTHING' ON SEPTEMBER 16thLos Angeles, CA (Friday, September 16) -- Jory Avner is a solo singer-songwriter based out of Chicago, Illinois. By blending highly stylized lyricism and guitar with synth/rock soundscapes he strives to create an atmosphere that is deeply textured, thought-provoking, introspective, and yet succinct in terms of narratives that make you want to dance. Jory's latest single ‘Plaything' is a departure from his traditionally faster-paced tunes: it showcases his contemplative style as well as reflects the collective challenges of the last few years. Beautiful, honest and powerfully emotional, ‘Plaything' wastes no time getting right to the heart with immediately relatable lyrics and ballad-esque instrumentals to support. “Plaything” was mixed, recorded and produced by Dean Dichoso.Watch the official lyric video for “Plaything” on YouTube: PLAYTHING FULL BANDhttps://youtu.be/-7KIk0wEiwUPLAYTHING Acoustichttps://youtu.be/QaVF_3iy0Gw"Working on this new single and upcoming EP has really been a transformative journey,” Jory says. “The last few years have really thrown a lot at me, and at us all really, and the evolution of my song writing has followed suit in a lot of unexpected ways that I'm feeling really excited about." Dean, his producer, has been vital to bringing about Jory's new vision for his music and his work. “He's been a mentor, and even more so, a friend to me during these wild times and I'm truly ecstatic for what we've been cooking up together." Dean agrees that working with Jory has been inspirational. “After listening to Jory for 2 years before I got to produce this single - it was nice to be able to unlock a lot of new types of creativity and song writing within him and watch it materialize. We had a great time expanding his sound into the realm of ambient sounds and finding ways to still bridge high production and the spirit of indie folk into the song.” Fans would describe his work as patient, moody but at times high energy. “The stories he tells,” says one fan on Discord, “are amongst some of the most heartfelt and honest ever written. His voice exudes the passion in which his art form has blessed many fans and friends." Another fan hits the mail on the head describing Jory's music: "Whether I'm enjoying a summer road trip or need something to cry to, Jory's music always brings strong emotions that suit the occasion." Another fan echoes those sentiments: “Jory's singing and song writing has a way of finding that one spot in your heart you didn't know needed some attention. In just a few words he can grab your attention and hold it forever.”“Jory Avner is a true songwriter in every sense of the word – a craftsman of dynamic, intricate narratives and soothing soundscapes, delivered with smoky vocals that lie somewhere between Bob Dylan, Spoon, and Passenger,” says Adela Skowronski of TheUnderbelly Hours. Jory's influences indeed include Bob Dylan, as well as Leonard Cohen, Townes Van Zandt, Conor Oberst, Jason Isbell, Gillian, Welch, Iron and Wine and Wilco. “By far the words are what I focus on the most when it comes to writing or listening to a song,” Jory says. “I guess I hope people walk away from my songs with their mind sort of activated, and in the best case scenario maybe feel a little moved. I always love when songs do that for me.”About Jory:Jory Avner is a solo singer-songwriter based out of Chicago, Illinois. By blending highly stylized lyrical storytelling that's often confessional in nature, and guitar with harmonica and synth/rock soundscapes, he strives to create an atmosphere that is deeply textured, thought-provoking, introspective, and yet succinct in terms of narratives. Originally born in Ohio, Jory's music is a moving combination of melancholic and bittersweet, with soft-spoken but hard-hitting lyrics that will grab your soul and never let go. Writing and performing music for over ten years, Jory has headlined shows across the United States and Canada and continues to play in and around the Greater Chicago area. His third studio album, 'Far and Away,' was released March 9th, 2018 with live performances on Radio DePaul, WZRD 88.3FM Chicago, and WRSE 88.7FM The Underbelly Hours.Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. Hailing from Birmingham, AL and drawing inspiration from many genres and eras , including The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Grateful Dead, Vampire Weekend and John Mayer we welcome Folk Rock Band 'Certainly So' to the show. Celebrating a delightfully bite-sized “mini” LP called Dreams of Green (Out NOW) , the band (Tanner Gray, Colby Wilson, Chase Porter and Zach Corder) has also been busy on the road in 2022 with venues including Nashville's iconic 'The 5 Spot' among many more. The music that comes from Certainly So has always boasted blood harmonies as well as thoughtful, invoking lyrics and all has come to fruition in a relatively short period of time. After Certainly, in January 2020, the group was introduced to producer/engineer Toby Hulbert. Hulbert had spent the last 8 years at Abbey Road in his hometown of London, England, and was currently in Nashville working alongside hitmaker Dave Cobb. Upon hearing the ‘Certainly So' demos, he felt a similar sentiment as Porter and Corder did- he must be involved. Hulbert joined the team as producer. Certainly So and Hulbert gained access to East Avalon Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals through RCA's Colin Lott during April 2020. Over the next two months, Hulbert and Lott teamed up to produce and engineer four weekend sessions, recording what would be the band's debut album Future Self Only Dreams- Released in March of 2021. Join us to learn about this special group, who in a short period are already creating quite a buzz in Nashville and beyond. For more info and tour dates, visit: www.certainlysomusic.com

JUST TALKING Returning Guest Catherine Barnes joins JUST TALKING with her Folk Rock band entourage Calamity. When a Vegas club gig at the Cavern goes south the ladies make a break for the Mexican border in this comedy action radio play “Trouble a Calamity Adventure.” Nisha Catron and Cathryn Beeks started the project with Catherine Barnes after watching a James Bond solo show. Inspired by true shit hitting the fan it wasn't difficult for the band to create an action, murder drama comedy radio play about calamity—it actually happened! Radio plays are making a revival. Batman Unburied “baterangs” Joe Rogan from Spotify's number 1 podcast—holy WTF Batman! “There's something amazing about listening, painting an image in your mind, plus it's way cheaper than CGI — Calamitization!” Rumor has it there's a Harry Styles rock musical in development. If it's true he'll fit in with Calamity's 5 lady ensemble nicely. “Trouble… it always finds us…” Follow, support and enjoy at : https://www.opendoorplayhouse.org/plays/thecalling57-s9np6-fneh9 STRIKE A CHORD Vocalist Chris Hoffman of Wolf Rd. joins STRIKE A CHORD to speak on love, loss and rock. Wolf Rd's new single “Way Down” is about picking up the pieces after getting your heart broken during a pandemic relationship — where's the vaccine for that? Everybody hates Chris… or is it everybody loves to break up with Chris? Whatever—social media can be a cruel reminder that your EX is having more fun without you in the Metaverse. Technology can offer digital salvation in an analog world —BUT the future is “sex dolls!” When was the last time you had a good song? “As Good As It's Gets” is a cathartic pop punk track—AND the music video has a hidden message for the fans. Here's a hint. It's a park in Chicago and #606. Follow, support and enjoy at: https://www.wolfrdband.com
