Worldly Church Girl
Episode 115 – Montell Jordan

Worldly Church Girl

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2023 43:03

History:The Billboard Top Ten Songs chart for 1995 contains the following names: Coolio, TLC, Seal, Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and a man named Montell Jordan. This Is How We Do It was a breakout new jack-swing song that topped the Hot 100 for seven weeks and R&B charts for eight. Jordan, tall and handsome with a silky-smooth voice, established himself as a powerful presence in music, brimming with talent, savvy, and charm. Over his nearly twenty-year career in music, Jordan has released seven studio albums, and fourteen singles, and is a Grammy-nominated artist, selling more than 10 million records worldwide. Origins:From South Central Los Angeles to Pepperdine University in Malibu, Montell was on course to attend law school when a professor said one of his biggest regrets was missing the chance to pursue music. In a flash, Montell recognized that if he was ever going to take a shot at music, he needed to do it then. He put together a demo, which eventually landed in the hands of Def Jam Records and Russell Simmons. This Is How We Do It took off, and his first of many number-one singles was born. Following years of awards, achievements, and accolades that never seemed to satisfy, Montell learned that without music, he's a husband, a dad, and a friend. He stepped away from the music business for many years in search of significance over success. “I had to learn who Montell was outside of music to determine that I make music and music doesn't make me.” In that time away, Montell was able to reevaluate his priorities and ultimately find his passion. This was found as he connected with his childhood faith. Ministry:Montell began to realize the difference between gifting and calling. He was gifted with music, but he was called to minister. Speaking, teaching, mentoring, counseling, and writing are some of the many ways Jordan is fulfilling his purpose in ministry today. Jordan now does music again as he has determined both what he is gifted to do and what he is purposed to do and allowed those worlds to meet. Montell served more than 14,000 people from 140 nations around the world each weekend for the last decade as an executive pastor of music, marriage, and men's ministry at Victory World Church in Norcross, GA. He continues to redefine sound through Victory, an ideal place that builds families transforms communities, reconciles cultures, and impacts nations. In his musical past, Montell had already shown an ability to stretch boundaries of genre and style and uses this same ability to influence, impact, and inspire today. Jordan's musical achievements are still recognized worldwide, and he and his wife of 20+ years, Kristin Jordan released a marriage book in October 2017 titled, “Marriage Masterpeace Inc! Making Your Marriage A Masterpeace.” Jordan released his autobiography, “Becoming Unfamous” during the summer of 2016. Montell brings the word of God and personal experience from the music business to provide a practical and applicable understanding of music and worship to light. He still tours on occasion to bring the love of Christ outside the four walls of the church to concert venues all over the world. Montell and Kristin is now a marriage missionary and has founded Marriage Masterpeace Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that seeks to help marriages all around the world by helping men and women reconcile with God and then to each other in efforts to eradicate divorce by taking the option off the table. Music:Montell Jordan's latest single, “When I'm Around You” feat. Grammy award-winning rap artist Lecrae is his first R&B song in nearly ten years! The new song is available NOW on all digital platforms and is currently charting on Urban AC radio! The single is modern R&B with a soulful relevancy easily identifiable as classic Montell Jordan. This new song and album are created to be the soundtrack for married couples (and those who desire to be married) by assisting them in keeping passion alive in their re...

Welcome my friends to season 3 of the Determined to Dance podcast. My prayer is that you'll be encouraged to persevere daily in our chaotic world. Show Notes: An Interview with Jeff Walling Part 2 Today I'm honored to share part two of my interview with Jeff Walling: author, speaker, and the Director of the Youth Leadership Initiative at Pepperdine University. We've spent this season learning from his wonderful book, Daring to Dance with God. Now on to part two… Jennifer: One thing I wondered about because it's something as a fiction writer people ask me is what is your favorite quote in the book? And I know there are probably tons of them. But is there one that really stands out? Jeff: I may have to get back to you on this. That's kind of a frightening thing after thinking back all those years. I know there are some quotes in that passage on letting the Lord lead, you know, the importance of doing that and how control is the hardest thing for us to let go of. Ideas, yeah. Quotes? As a writer, you're just busy trying to get it from your brain out through your fingertips. You challenge me to go back and say is there a passage where I say, “Oh, God, you did a good job on that one.” I'll get back to you. Jennifer: My favorite story in the book is the one about you manning the record player. That one stood out to me more than any of them. Jeff: Yeah, a few years ago, quite a while now, I found a time in my life where I was burned out, tired of marching, I knew it was because I was tripping over stuff I shouldn't be tripping over. And I remember going to a therapist, a Christian therapist, and telling him about that experience and about the record player. And he gave me a new perspective. He said, “Wow. That was your way of hiding and coping. That was your way of making a joke out of it. Let's somehow make this fun. And you talk about a quote, he said, “Jeff, you like many people don't enjoy sitting in pain.” We learn so much more, I know this, through pain than we ever do through pleasure. And yet we try to eradicate pain just as quickly as we can. I have probably eight different kinds of Advil or Tylenol or aspirin in my cabinet because why should we hurt, even for a moment? Spiritually, oh my goodness, to be able to just listen to the voice of God in the pain. That's the only reason that the prodigal son got home. If he had managed to make himself some kind of pig slop taco, he'd have stayed where he was. But the pain, the agony of man, this is not what God wants for me is what helped him make the turn. Jennifer: I totally agree. It seems like, especially when I'm frustrated when I finally get to that point of saying, “Okay, God. I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing here. He says, “Okay. I've been waiting for you to say that. Now let me tell you what you're supposed to be doing here.” Pain, aggravation, frustration—all of it brings me to that point. Jeff: Amen. We need to be like the woman who had spent all her money on the cures, right? Who was still bleeding. Who'd gone on the misery-go-round over and over and over again, and finally, she was willing not only to go out in public in a crowd—where she wasn't supposed to be—but to just reach out and touch the hem of his garment. I love that picture. I hope your listeners will hear the voice of God saying, “Don't be ashamed. You might not dance like somebody else, and somebody may look at you like you're goofy but just look into my eyes and dance with Me. Let me guide you in celebrating life, using your gifts and skills even when dancing through the pain.” Jennifer: That was a good chapter. And we have about six or seven more episodes on the podcast. I plan on doing some filling in and at the end, I'm going to deal with the last chapter. We've already been touching on a lot of trust and faithfulness. This week's podcast was on the end. The end time. Getting ready to meet our Savior, tying on to where I'm going.

This classic format episode of the Power Line podcast features Steve Hayward all by himself, and breaks some news: Steve is returning to Pepperdine University this academic year as the Edward Gaylord Visiting Professor at the School of Public Policy. Steve will be filling the large shoes of the late Ted McAllister, who passed away earlier this year, leaving a big hole in the SPP program. Pepperdine's SPP Dean Pete Peterson asked Steve to offer the faculty address to this year's incoming class of graduate students during orientation last week, and he spoke on the relevant contemporary lessons from Max Weber's famous lecture "Politics as a Vocation," which intersects perfectly with Karl Rove's Wall Street Journal essay over the weekend on how America has sometimes been in much worse shape than today. True, but not exhaustive, and supposing natural cycles of history will take us out of our current funk is likely a mistake, akin to fiddling while Rome burns. In one sentence, Steve's message to incoming students is that they'll need to step up their game even more than they might have thought. That's what Weber told students in 1919, and his lesson didn't fully take.

It's 1999. I'm attending Pepperdine University for my MBA program when I ask myself, “What else can I do?” I decide to learn computer programming at UCLA. In my first class there, I'm sitting in a room filled with other students and realize two things: First, I'm one of only three female students in a class of over 40 people. And second, I love everything about this training and want to learn more! So I start reading books and learning as fast as I can, noticing all the while that there aren't many female authors and role models in tech. Yet, I'm still hungry to learn as much as I can and want to accelerate my training. Thanks to a magazine ad, I sign up for the Web 99 Conference in San Francisco and listen in fascination to Lynda Weinman talk about Flash technology. It makes me realize that I want to do this for my career. I walk up to her after her Talk to introduce myself and discover she's holding her first-ever workshop on Flash in Ojai, California. She personally invites me to sign up, and I go for it! Thanks to Lynda's guidance, I move from that workshop to teaching classes for her, writing two books on Flash technology, running a Flash-focused tech event, and co-founding my own software company. My story changed just from casually taking a computer class in college… and all because someone believed in and opened doors for me. And my special guest today has made it his business to do the same for others. New attention from historians and journalists is raising pointed questions about the founding period: was the American revolution waged to preserve slavery, and was the Constitution a pact with slavery or a landmark in the antislavery movement? We have long needed a history of the founding that fully includes Black Americans in the Revolutionary protests, the war, and the debates over slavery and freedom that followed. We now have that history in Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Edward J. Larson's insightful synthesis of the founding. Throughout Larson's brilliant history, it is the voices of Black Americans that prove the most convincing of all on the urgency of liberty. Shermer and Larson discuss: Was America founded in 1619 or 1776? • What is/was an “American”? • Founding Fathers attitudes toward slavery • What was the justification of slavery? • constitutional convention and slavery compromises • U.S. Constitution and slavery • Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments • Atlantic slave trade • Fugitive Slave Act and Clause • Native Americans • monogenism vs. polygenism • slavery abolition • Quakers push for abolition • Three-fifths Compromise • The Dread Scott Decision and the Civil War • Abraham Lincoln and his rational argument for ending slavery • the future of race relations in America. Edward J. Larson is the author of many acclaimed works in American history, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning history of the Scopes Trial, Summer for the Gods. He also authored Franklin and Washington: The Founding Partnership, The Return of George Washington 1783-1789, A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800—America's First Presidential Campaign, An Empire of Ice: Scott, Shackleton, and the Heroic Age of Antarctic Science, To the Edges of the Earth: 1909, the Race for the Three Poles, and the Climax of the Age of Exploration, and the textbook Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory. Accepted's med school admissions quiz can give you a quick reality check. Complete the quiz, and you'll not only get an assessment, but tips on how to improve your chances of acceptance. Plus, it's all free.  Dr. Katherine Ruger earned her undergraduate degree at Northwood University, her master's in counseling and sports psychology at Wayne State, and her PhD in education and organizational leadership from Pepperdine University. She started at MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine as an admissions' counselor in 2009 and has assumed increasing responsibilities ever since. Since August 2022, almost exactly a year ago, she has served as a senior associate dean of admissions and student affairs at Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Dr. Ruger, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [1:40] Thank you, Linda. Can you give us, just to start, an overview of MSU's DO program, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [1:54] Sure. I'd love to. MSUCOM, which is what I'll refer to it during the course of the session, is a really special place. I think it has a lot to do with the type of people that we recruit and attract, both from an admissions' perspective as well as faculty and staff. Certainly, it's a college of osteopathic medicine, and so our training really revolves around that holistic approach and focusing on preventative medicine. But we're looking for students and faculty and staff who have a commitment to service, a heart for leadership. That type of community just inspires a lot of growth, curiosity, excitement. It's a really wonderful place to be, and I know that I'm biased in saying that perhaps. But I think something that sets us apart is that we are part of Michigan State University, and we have a lot of wonderful access to resources as part of the university. Our college is committed to local community outreach as well as international outreach. A lot of reasons why folks want to be part of our community is because they get to serve different populations of people. We have street medicine, which is where our students, in partnership with clinicians, get to go and work with individuals who are experiencing homelessness. That's more on the local level. Then from an international perspective, we have renowned faculty that are trying to cure malaria in Malawi. We have students going out there and doing medical missions. We have them going to Peru and Guatemala. It's really fun to be able to get them involved in a lot of different ways. It tends to be a reason why, again, folks want to be here. You mentioned the community focus as well as the international focus. That's a balancing act I assume, but I noticed that you have three campuses. You also mentioned that it's obviously an osteopathic school. How do both the ability to study on three different campuses and the osteopathic nature of the program affect the educational experience for MSU students? [3:43] Good question, and one that I've not been asked. The first thing I thought of was the interconnectedness of systems, which is the osteopathic philosophy in general. Because students can start their preclinical years or years one and two of medical school in Detroit, in Clinton Township, or in East Lansing, Michigan. They have the opportunity to select their geography. Certainly the vibe, if you will, across those campuses. But at the same time, there's an interconnectedness,

We've spent this season learning from his wonderful book, Daring to Dance with God. Jeff, I'm so glad you've joined us today. Jeff: Well, thank you, Jennifer. It's a blessing to be with you and so encouraging that your podcast listeners have been walking through the book. I do pray that God used it to bless them. Jennifer: It has. This has actually been my best season yet as far as downloads and stuff. I think a lot of people have listened to it and also the podcast is heard on internet radio, Christian Mix 106, in over fifty-five countries. So, there is no telling who all is hearing it. Jeff: Wow. I wasn't nervous about being on your show until that moment. Thank you. Jennifer: Anyway, so who knows? Someone over in Ethiopia or China could be listening and buying your book right now. Jeff: Well, God has a way of putting us where we need to be, and in this wonderful day and age something I wrote—oh goodness, I hate to even think of it now—twenty-plus years ago continue to resonate and has people reach out to me about it. God deserves all the praise. Jennifer: Amen. First, go ahead and tell us a little about your ministry and your family. Jeff: Sure. Sure. I am blessed to have been a preacher for forty years now. And my sweet wife, she and I are celebrating forty years together also. We have three sons; one of which is a minister himself, Taylor. He is about to start a new ministry out here in California: a church focused on reaching young people here on the Pepperdine campus. My middle son and Taylor will both be living here in Southern California and my youngest son is in Denver. They are all married and I am blessed to have four grandkids and two granddogs. It's a lot of fun. I work here, trying to raise up the next generation of young Christian leaders. I preach as a teaching pastor for Shepherd Church about eight to ten times a year which is a church here in the Los Angeles area. Jennifer: Okay. That sounds really interesting and like a much-needed mission in that area. Jeff: Blessed to be involved with it. Jennifer: Going back to the book—as I was telling Jeff earlier—the book meant so much to me when I was younger and I read it. I'm so excited to do a podcast about it. Can you explain to my listeners the central idea discussed in Daring to Dance with God? Jeff: Well, I'll give it a shot. The very first chapter of the book tells about how I was raised in a home that believed that dancing was not a thing that Christ would want us to do. And it was a big shock to me and I immediately called my mom the first time that I really took a look at the beautiful parable called the parable of the prodigal son. When the father comes out from the house, where there is the sound of music and dancing emanating. And the scripture uses the word there for dancing. And that father has always represented to me: God. So, here is God coming out here to this older son, who doesn't want to come in and celebrate what has happened to his younger brother. To think that God would come out and say, “Come dance with Me. Come dance with us.” This idea that God invites us, not into a drudge march or inviting us to get in line. But this idea of dancing. Dancing to me has always carried a sense of joy and getting connected with something bigger than yourself. I mean, if you've been to a wedding recently, right, you see a lot of people who never dance any place else dancing at a wedding. And quite frankly, I'm one of them. It's wonderful to see folks who are all connecting in different ways to the same piece of music. And I guess that idea of trusting God enough to step ou...

Did you know it's possible to trick your skin into functioning like it did when it was younger? Just like lifting weights helps build muscle and aerobic exercise helps improve your cardiovascular health, using active ingredients like retinol and vitamin C can actually change the function of our skin as we age. Welcome to another episode of the Biohacking Beauty podcast brought to you by Young Goose Skincare! In this episode, host Amitay Eshel, the CEO of Young Goose, is joined by Darnell Cox to discuss how small lifestyle changes can have a profound impact on skin health. We dive into Darnell's comprehensive approach to maintaining a youthful appearance and lifestyle, and the importance of a holistic approach to skincare. Plus, we cover the complexities of skincare protocols and how to find the perfect balance between effectiveness and safety.Darnell Cox is an expert when it comes to living young. She holds a masters in psychology from Pepperdine University and is certified in Integrative Nutrition and Health. Darnell is the brain behind Live Young Lifestyle, a comprehensive resource for all things anti-aging, from diet and exercise to skincare and wellness. From running the L.A. Her enthusiasm for learning and sharing knowledge on how to live young is truly infectious, and it has resonated with thousands of people worldwide. What we discuss:(0:00:10) - Ways to maintain a youthful appearance and lifestyle(0:11:13) - Tricking your skin for a more youthful appearance(0:25:18) - Skincare protocols and lifestyle hacks(0:31:20) - Balancing skincare and longevity(0:39:08) - The importance of sun protectionKey Takeaways:Taking care of your body plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin. It starts with being mindful of what you put into your body and how you move it. Drinking excessively, lack of sleep, insufficient exercise, and failure to use sunscreen can undermine the benefits of any skincare procedure. Paying attention to all these aspects forms a solid foundation for promoting healthy, radiant skin. It's essential to understand that there is a limit to how much you can engage in certain skincare procedures without causing harm to your skin. Overdoing radio frequency or microneedling can exhaust the skin and disrupt its ability to repair itself. Just like when you tear muscle fibers during a workout, it is important to give your skin time to heal.Exposing your skin to sunlight in moderation can have a positive impact on our internal clocks and sleep-wake cycles. However, when it comes to protecting the skin from damage caused by the sun, it is important to take extra precautions and use sun protection. To learn more about Young Goose:Website: https://www.younggoose.com/Instagram: @young_goose_skincareGet 20% off your first purchase by using code PODCAST20 at www.younggoose.comTo learn more about Darnell Cox:Website: https://www.liveyounglifestyle.com/Instagram: @liveyounglifestyle
