Who is the authentic you? Some people feel like they remember being an authentic self at some point, and I feel many never experienced it. But I feel we all long to just be comfortable being us. What does that look like? How does it feel? Following is a conversation I had with Dr Thema Bryant. Thema is a clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at Pepperdine University. She's an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She earned her doctorate from Duke University and completed her postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. In the world of academia and psychology she is royalty. When we recorded this conversation, Thema was president-elect of the American Psychological Association. She is now president. Other top psychologists look to her for guidance. Thema has half a million people following her on instagram because she is her authentic self. You'll find her dancing and see her efforts in-play to decolonize traditional psychology and meld science, spirituality and faith, and our very humanity. Thema has a book called, Homecoming: Healing Trauma to Reclaim Your Authentic Self, and here we take a very base look at the real world issues and hope for today's mental health desires. This week, IAQradio will interview Dr. Jake Avila, Associate Professor at Middle Tennessee State University, to discuss his work at MTSU's School of Concrete and Construction Management. The question for the restoration industry is, will its chance at a 2nd Act with higher education advance the practice and trade of restoration and damage repair, to be recognized by government and general industry as a profession? Tune in this week for an engaging interview with Dr Jake as he discusses a plan the restoration industry can embrace and build off the lessons learned from its first act with Purdue to advance the business of restoration to become a recognized profession! LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio+. Dr. Avila's industry experience spans over seventeen years in the construction industry where he worked primarily in general management. Prior to his transition to academia, he served as executive vice president and general manager of CA Construction, a family-owned construction firm specializing in disaster restoration and government contracting. As general manager he oversaw the business operations as well as construction and consulting services to government agencies, homeowners, property managers, law firms, AEC firms, third-party administrators, and major insurance carriers. He is a scholar-practitioner and is committed to enhancing the work of restoration industry professionals through applied research. The underlying goal in all his work is to help disaster restoration firms build capacity by systematically advancing the understanding of industry dynamics, improving the design and application of best practices, and strengthening connections between scholarly and professional activities. His research recently examined family business dynamics in the restoration industry and, in collaboration with faculty at Purdue University; he is currently the principal investigator of a study that is examining employee burnout and engagement in the restoration industry. Since 2008 Dr. Avila has taught in business, engineering, and construction programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Prior to coming to MTSU he served two other institutions as an associate professor, business department chair, MBA program director, and program director in a college of engineering. Dr. Avila holds a bachelor's degree in industrial/organizational psychology from Pepperdine University, a master of business administration from California Baptist University, and a doctorate from the University of Southern California. As an undergraduate he studied at ITESM in Guadalajara, Mexico, and while pursuing his master's degree he studied at Regent's Park College of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. Gene Eidelman, Cofounder of Azure Printed Homes, has proven this with a groundbreaking approach to construction. Using recycled plastics, his company is addressing the housing crisis while reducing environmental impact.Gene's journey started six years ago with a simple idea: to build homes that are more affordable and sustainable. After two and a half years of experimentation, he and his team developed a prototype during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The unit we developed actually is the one that's in the video now,” he shared in today's episode. “It's a backyard studio that can be built very quickly in our factory. It takes us 24 hours to print and five days to finish.”From these modest beginnings, Azure Printed Homes has expanded its scope. Today, the company produces a range of units, from luxury eco-resorts to affordable housing subdivisions and even villages for the unhoused. “This whole spectrum of products… [is] coming out from our factory,” Gene said. “It's just been an incredible journey.”What sets Azure apart isn't just the technology—it's the mission. By repurposing recycled plastic, the company builds homes 70% faster and 30% cheaper than traditional methods. With construction being one of the largest contributors to global waste, this innovation is a game-changer.Gene also shared exciting news: Azure was recently named a winner in Pepperdine University's Most Fundable Companies competition, an accolade awarded after a rigorous review of companies from across the country. This recognition highlights not just the company's innovation but also its potential to scale.Azure Printed Homes is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder, offering everyday investors a chance to join their journey. “Crowdfunding democratizes the investment,” Gene explained. “People… understand good design, affordable housing, [and] sustainability.”Gene's story isn't just about building homes—it's about building solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges. By combining sustainability, innovation, and a clear social impact, he's creating a blueprint for a better future.tl;dr:Gene Eidelman cofounded Azure Printed Homes to build faster, cheaper, and sustainable homes using recycled plastics.Azure's innovative units range from eco-resorts to affordable housing for the unhoused, addressing critical needs.Recently named one of Pepperdine University's Most Fundable Companies, Azure's success continues to grow.Gene credits his relentless work ethic and crowdfunding campaigns for raising over $7.2 million.Azure's WeFunder campaign, closing October 15, is the last chance for non-accredited investors to join. How to Develop Relentless Work Ethic As a SuperpowerGene's superpower, as he explained in today's episode, is rooted in his relentless work ethic and determination. Reflecting on his childhood as a refugee from Ukraine, he shared lessons from his father: “You don't know whether you're smarter than the person next to you. But one thing you can do, you can outwork them.” This philosophy fueled his success, from arriving in the U.S. with no English to launching a groundbreaking company. Gene emphasized, “Just never give up… no matter how tough it is.”Illustrative Story:Gene shared how his perseverance shaped Azure Printed Homes' journey. During a challenging time for venture funding, the company turned to crowdfunding, despite Gene initially doubting its feasibility. Over six successful campaigns, Azure raised over $7.2 million, with a third coming from everyday investors. Gene's commitment to his vision kept him pushing forward, even when traditional funding sources dried up. This unwavering determination allowed Azure to scale and achieve recognition as one of Pepperdine University's Most Fundable Companies.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Don't Give Up: Pursue your goals relentlessly, even when faced with repeated setbacks.Seek Product-Market Fit: Validate your ideas by talking to potential customers early and often.Embrace Rejection: Treat every “no” as a step closer to a “yes.”Leverage Crowdfunding: Democratize access to funding by inviting community support for your vision.Work Harder: Outwork others to gain an edge in achieving your goals.By following Gene's example and advice, you can make a relentless work ethic a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileGene Eidelman (he/him):Cofounder, Azure Printed HomesAbout Azure Printed Homes: Azure Printed Homes is fundamentally changing the construction industry by leveraging 3D printing technology using recycled polymers and fiberglass to prefab tiny homes, ADUs, affordable homes and units for housing after natural disasters 70% faster and 30% less expensive than existing construction methods. In this episode of On Boards, Dr. Keith Dorsey an executive coach, author, active board member, and expert in leadership development and corporate governance. joins hosts Joe Ayoub and Raza Shaikh His book, The Boardroom Journey: Practical Guidance for Women to Secure a Seat at the Table, provides insights and strategies for women aspiring to become board members. Keith holds a doctorate in Organizational Change and Leadership from the University of Southern California and serves on multiple boards including Vimly Benefit Solutions, Pacific Crest Trail Association and Pepperdine University's Graziadio Business School. He discusses his research-based concept of “optimal diversity,” which couples demographic diversity and diversity of thought. His work has been widely published including the Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management, Forbes and Fast Company. Key takeaways 1.Keith's life in 3 chapters Keith started his career in the U.S. military and the Air Force, followed by nearly 30 years working in corporate America. In 2019, he went back to school to get a doctorate in organizational change in leadership from the University of Southern California. Now, he serves as an executive advisor to lead corporate leaders to optimize boardroom practices. 2. What is optimal diversity? While getting his doctorate, Keith started to research the lack of gender and ethnic diversity on corporate boards. He discovered the concept of “optimal diversity” - the combination of observable diversity and/or demographic diversity along with diversity of thought. This idea encourages people to reflect beyond their observable traits and dive deeper into how their lived experiences and perspectives can contribute to diversity. 3. Pre-vetting: It's about who knows you, not who you know Keith found through his studies that executives who serve on boards, were very often seated through their network. When it comes time to recruit another board member the question that is often asked is: “who do we know.” When it comes to joining a corporate board, it's about who knows you and understands your experience and skills. In addition to giving your “autopilot intro” while networking, he encourages aspiring board members to take a few extra seconds to go beyond the details of your day-to-day job and tell them what you're looking to do. 4. Five different “capitals” Keith's book dedicates a chapter to each type of capital: human, social, cultural, director, and commitment. During his research, Keith found that women often take the approach of presenting themselves as exceptional executives but not as exemplary board members. He encourages people to optimize their human capital. During board interviews, exhibit the type of behavior that they would want to see in the boardroom. Quotes ” Optimal” diversity forces people to really reflect and to think about the things that make who they beyond just their observable demographic traits, including their lived experiences. “It's best to look out the front windshield and be able to say what's beyond that S-curve and that sharp right curve ahead by asking thought provoking questions based on your human capital…instead of looking through the rear-view mirror and shouting your praises.” “ Figure out who you are and what your superpowers and secret sauce actually are and then incorporate that in a way of getting your name out there so more people know you than you know” Links https://www.boardroomjourney.com/ The Boardroom Journey: Practical Guidance for Women to Secure a Seat at the Table How Board Sourcing Approaches Contribute To The Corporate Diversity Problem—And What To Do About It Guest Bio Dr. Keith D. Dorsey is a researcher, author, advisor, and active board member focused on issues of diversity, governance, and strategic growth for private and public corporate boards. His recent research examined women executives' pathways to securing corporate board seats, yielding powerful insights about the barriers and facilitators unique to women candidates seeking these positions. His book, The Boardroom Journey: Practical Guidance for Women to Secure a Seat at the Table, combines his research insights with his extensive executive, board, and industry experience. He speaks on topics related to governance and navigating the path to the C suite and boardroom. As an executive advisor, he is focused on increasing Optimal DiversityTM within corporate senior management, executive, and board-level roles.

How are LGBTQ+ Jews navigating today's overlapping crises in Israel and in America? In this Z3 Podcast episode, Rabbi Amitai Fraiman speaks with Hila Peer and Asher Gellis about the impact of rising antisemitism and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment at a moment when community feels both more fragile and more essential than ever. But Flower Turbines, led by CEO and Founder Dr. Daniel Farb, is bringing wind power innovation to urban spaces, making it more accessible and efficient than ever before. At the heart of this transformation is what Daniel calls the “cluster effect” or “bouquet effect.” This patented technology allows small wind turbines to enhance each other's performance when placed together. “Each turbine that you add to a group makes the whole group perform better,” Daniel explained during today's episode. “If you have two turbines, they perform 50 percent better than if you had two separate ones… Four turbines, it's double the amount of power.”This unique capability doesn't just improve efficiency—it makes wind energy viable in more places, from urban rooftops to residential neighborhoods that typically couldn't accommodate traditional large-scale turbines. Daniel's tulip-shaped designs are compact, quiet, and visually appealing, making them a perfect fit for densely populated areas.Flower Turbines is also scaling beyond technology development into project financing. The company recently launched a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign via Honeycomb Credit, raising $250,000 in a single week. The campaign aims to fund larger installations of these turbine clusters, offering investors the opportunity to earn dividends from specific green energy projects. “This is the first time that it's available for wind,” Daniel said, emphasizing the importance of democratizing access to clean energy investment. The urgency of this work is clear. Federal subsidies for renewable energy are set to expire soon, making cost-effective technologies like Flower Turbines' cluster effect essential for the industry's future. “What we're doing is reducing the cost of electricity at the point of use,” Daniel noted, highlighting the practical benefits of deploying turbines where energy is consumed. This innovative approach not only helps Flower Turbines expand its impact but also provides everyday people with a meaningful way to support and profit from the transition to clean energy. If you're interested in learning more about Flower Turbines or investing in this groundbreaking opportunity, visit s4g.biz/flower to explore the details.tl;dr:Flower Turbines' cluster effect technology boosts efficiency, making small wind turbines viable in urban spaces. The company has raised over $17 million and is scaling projects with a crowdfunding campaign.Daniel highlighted the importance of developing technology that works without relying on subsidies.Regulated crowdfunding allows investors to earn dividends from specific green energy projects.Daniel's superpower, persistence, helped him overcome early financial challenges to build Flower Turbines. How to Develop Persistence As a SuperpowerWhen asked about his superpower, Daniel described persistence as his defining quality. “If I believe in something, I'll do it,” he said, reflecting on his commitment to Flower Turbines. He also highlighted the importance of resilience during tough times, sharing that persistence often requires faith. Whether facing financial uncertainty or the challenges of scaling a new technology, Daniel's steadfast belief in his mission has been the cornerstone of his success.Illustrative Story:In the early days of Flower Turbines, Daniel often faced financial uncertainty while growing the company. He recalled authorizing purchases for inventory, not knowing if there would be enough money the following week. Despite these nerve-wracking moments, he relied on faith and persistence to move forward. His ability to endure those challenges enabled him to raise funds, develop over 30 patents, and establish Flower Turbines as a leader in small-scale wind energy.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Cultivate self-discipline through activities that challenge you physically or mentally, such as sports or academics.Set clear goals to maintain focus during challenges.Develop resilience by embracing tough times as opportunities for growth.Practice faith in your vision, even when the path forward is unclear.Learn to balance persistence with flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.By following Daniel's example and advice, you can make persistence a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileDr. Daniel Farb (he/him):CEO and Founder, Flower TurbinesAbout Flower Turbines: Flower Turbines is an innovative small wind turbine company with the ambition to become a major global force in renewable energy. With over 30 patents, the company has solved the technology and design problems holding small wind back from being as large an industry as solar. One of its biggest innovations is the cluster effect, whereby the turbines, when placed close to each other correctly, make the whole group perform better. For example, 4 turbines together produce as much energy as 8 separate ones.Website: flowerturbines.comX/Twitter Handle: @flowerturbinesCompany Facebook Page: facebook.com/flowerturbinesOther URL: invest.honeycombcredit.com/campaigns/Flower-Turbines-Project-Series-1-LLCBiographical Information: Dr. Daniel Farb is the CEO of Flower Turbines, a fast-growing wind energy company pioneering small-scale turbines designed to be both efficient and aesthetically appealing. This encore episode features passionate human rights advocate Annette Oltmans, and we're talking about covert emotional abuse, one of the most insidious and overlooked forms of domestic violence. If you're in it, have been through it, or suspect something's not right in your relationship, this is one you don't want to miss (or re-listen to). Annette shares her personal experience of prolonged emotional abuse in marriage, along with what she's learned through years of recovery and deep field research. Her work around Original Abuse and Double Abuse® led her to found The M3ND Project in 2016, an organization dedicated to helping survivors name what's happening and start to heal. What you'll hear about in this episode: What motivated Annette to found the M3ND Project Some of the definitions of covert emotional abuse like blame-shifting or minimization of the victim's perspective Annette shares the four pillars of abuse and what drives abusive thinking Realizing you are a victim and changing the worldview of your relationship with your abuser brings on a new layer of stress Abuse recovery and insights and advice for those thinking about repairing their relationship after their partner has begun therapy Learn more about Annette Oltmans: Annette Oltmans is a philanthropist and passionate human rights advocate. Annette's personal experiences of prolonged emotional abuse in marriage and her extensive journey of recovery including comprehensive field research into the topics of Original Abuse and Double Abuse® ignited her passion to founding The M3ND Project in 2016. While seeking the help of professionals and responders, she experienced Double Abuse® in the form of spiritual and institutional abuse. These harmful encounters compelled Annette in her relentless pursuit for solutions that involved interviews with hundreds of victims and survivors. She uncovered common threads that cause victims prolonged states of confusion as well as what ultimately led them towards healing. Her journey also involved interviews with hundreds of faith-based leaders and therapists which led her to discover that most are untrained and ill-equipped to identify and help victims of emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse. In working to prevent and remediate such harm, Annette developed protocoled models that are now being taught and implemented with therapists, churches and professional organizations across the United States. She consulted with esteemed experts in abuse, trauma, and healing to ensure the materials align with the highest professional standards. Annette also serves on the Board of Pepperdine University's Boone Center for the Family and is a Board of Trustee member of Northrise University in Zambia. Her writing on these topics of abuse, domestic violence, and bullying has been published in the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), Teen Vogue, and numerous other publications. Diana Tucker, CEO of SenoGuard, is leading the charge with an innovative alternative to post-lumpectomy radiation. Using advanced cryoablation technology, SenoGuard freezes the cavity where a tumor is removed, eliminating residual cancer cells in one procedure.Radiation has been the standard of care for decades, but it comes with significant physical, emotional, and financial costs. Diana explained in today's episode, “Radiation is horrible both clinically and cosmetically. It changes the shape, size, and feel of the breast. Many women face long-term emotional and physical side effects.” She shared the tragic story of a young breast cancer survivor whose radiation treatment ultimately damaged her heart. “I am very passionate about eliminating radiation if at all possible,” she said.SenoGuard's approach simplifies treatment. “The patient goes in for her tumor excision, and immediately we freeze the cavity where the tumor has been removed,” Diana said. “It's one and done. The patient can go back to work the very next day.” This innovation not only reduces the physical toll on patients but also addresses significant disparities in access to care. Many women forego lumpectomies because daily radiation sessions are unaffordable or inaccessible, especially in rural areas. Diana noted, “Almost 30% of women who qualify for a lumpectomy choose mastectomy instead because they can't afford the time or cost of radiation.”To bring this groundbreaking technology to market, SenoGuard is raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder. Diana emphasized the importance of public support, saying, “Everybody knows someone who has had breast cancer. By investing, people feel they are not just supporting a cause but making a difference for society.”SenoGuard's cryoablation technology has the potential to transform breast cancer treatment, making it less toxic, more accessible, and kinder to patients. By supporting their crowdfunding campaign, you could help bring this life-changing innovation to millions of women.tl;dr:Diana Tucker shared how SenoGuard's cryoablation technology eliminates the need for post-lumpectomy radiation.Radiation's side effects often force women to choose mastectomies, highlighting the need for better options.SenoGuard's innovation reduces treatment time, costs, and disparities in accessing breast cancer care.Diana described her relentless passion and how it drives her to overcome challenges in her work.SenoGuard is raising funds via a WeFunder campaign to bring this life-changing technology to market. How to Develop Relentless Passion As a SuperpowerDiana Tucker's superpower is her relentless passion for solving problems she truly believes in. As she explained in today's episode, “When I have a sincere understanding, I become very passionate, enthusiastic, and relentless to get that…across the finish line.” Her superpower drives her to tackle challenges with unwavering determination, especially when the stakes are high.Story Illustrating SuperpowerDiana shared a story from her early career, where she was tasked with bringing a French ophthalmology solution to the U.S. market. “The CEO told me, ‘If you can figure out how to bring this over to America, you have a job. If you can't, you're fired.'” Fueled by determination, she successfully introduced the technology, which became the standard of care. Years later, an ophthalmologist recognized her contribution with heartfelt gratitude, highlighting the profound and lasting impact of her work.Tips for Developing the SuperpowerFind Your Passion: Identify problems that deeply resonate with you to fuel your enthusiasm and drive.Share Your Vision: Build a team by inspiring others with your passion and clear vision.Never Give Up: When faced with roadblocks, find creative workarounds to keep moving forward.Believe in Yourself: Confidence in your abilities is key to overcoming challenges and achieving your goals.By following Diana's example and advice, you can make relentless passion a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileDiana Tucker (she/her):CEO, SenoGuardAbout SenoGuard: SenoGuard is pioneering a transformative approach to breast cancer treatment by offering a radiation-free alternative following lumpectomy. One of America's growing problems is the openness of antisemites to bring their evil message to the public square. It's bad enough there are antisemites in the nation. But the fact they have been so open with their antisemitism on college campuses in recent months points to a bigger concern: where is this headed? If the antisemitism isn't nipped in the bud and countered with truth, then it won't be long before America turns against its greatest friend in the Middle East -- Israel. Pete Peterson, dean of public policy at Pepperdine University, talks about a new college-level course that teaches the next generation of leaders how to advance foreign affairs that doesn't harm Israel and harm America, and that is based on biblically sound truths.

Give to help Chris continue making Truce I made these episodes a few years ago, but since it is the 100th anniversary of the Scopes "Monkey" trial, I thought we should revisit them! Tennessee was the first state in the United States to crack down hard on the teaching of evolution in public schools. Others had dabbled, but Tennessee went all the way. The ACLU wanted to challenge the validity of the case in the courts. In order to do that they needed an educator to teach it, get busted, and be brought to trial. At the same time, the town of Dayton, TN, needed a boost. After the biggest employer closed down, it faced serious economic trouble. What if the men of Dayon could manufacture a court case to draw the attention of the nation? They found a young teacher named John Scopes and convinced him to participate in their scheme. They booked Scopes, even though he probably never taught evolution. The ACLU had its case. Soon, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow hopped on board, and it went from a publicity stunt to something for the history books. This is the event that some historians (wrongly) point to as the death of Christian fundamentalism in the United States until it was revived by the Moral Majority. One man fighting for the biblical idea of creation and another for godless atheism. But the real history is far more complex. Edward Larson, professor at Pepperdine University, joins us to discuss the trial and his Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Summer for the Gods”. Why did the ACLU feel they had to try the Tennessee Law? Who should decide what is taught in schools? Teachers? Parents? Lawmakers? Or some combination? October 7th exposed to everyone what many in and around the academy have known for years: American universities—not all, but many—are failing catastrophically to educate the next generation about the history, cultures, and politics of the Middle East. Instead of producing students versed in the region's complexities, these institutions have become factories for ideological activism. And nowhere is this truer than in the case of Israel and its history: Zionism in the modern university classroom is rarely examined as a movement of national liberation but instead as a caricature of colonialism, racism, repression, and occupation. And outside of the classroom, we've seen the most prestigious campuses in the United States transform into nodes of anti-Israel activism and Jew hatred. These are immense and long-standing problems. But instead of just diagnosing their sources and discussing their perils, today we're going to talk to someone who's actually done something about it. Robert Satloff saw this crisis clearly. Having published back in 2001 the eminent historian Martin Kramer's short volume on the corruption of Middle East Studies, Ivory Towers on Sand, Satloff has spent decades watching the field drift toward anti-Israel political advocacy. As the executive director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, he decided to stop complaining and found his own professional master's program. Working with Pepperdine University, the Washington Institute has established a completely new graduate program designed to train policy professionals with rigorous scholarship and historical accuracy, without anti-Israel bias. The program offers full scholarships, accepts no foreign funding, is fully accredited, and will convene its inaugural cohort in Washington, DC this fall.
Today, I am so excited to introduce two special guests, Julie Scelfo and Julie Fruman, from Mothers Against Media Addiction (or MAMA). I believe so much in MAMA's vision and mission for healthier tech and healthier families. I can't wait for you to meet them. You'll Learn:How a simple shift helped my guest's son love reading. Why the era of anxious parenting is making it even harder for parents to say no to screens.Short and long term risks of media overuse.3 ways to help your kids develop healthier relationships with screensWhy community is the key to battling media addictionThis episode is full of simple, practical ways you can help your family have a healthier, more balanced relationship with screens and media. So sit back and listen to us talk about the hope for an environment where media does not infiltrate everything and our kids can grow up without overexposure to media and screens.------------------------------------------Meet the MAMAsJulie Scelfo is the founder and executive director of MAMA, and she has created a chapter-based grassroots movement of parents who are fighting back against media addiction. Her goal is to create a world in which real life experiences and interactions remain at the heart of a healthy childhood. She is an award-winning journalist, a former New York Times staff writer, a media ecologist, and a parent. She says, “MAMA grew out of my own frustration as a parent trying to keep my kids safe online and realizing that the problem was beyond anything I alone could manage as a parent. At one point, I signed them up for software that was going to let me know anytime they were exposed to something dangerous. And I started getting over 100 emails a day. And I realized there's no way that I could manage all of that alone.”Now, MAMA has a 3-part mission to educate parents, get smartphones out of schools, and advocate for basic safeguards on technology products. Julie Fruman is the leader of the local chapter of MAMA in my community. For more than a decade, Julie has provided mental health support to individuals, couples and families. She holds a Masters degree in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice. She hosts frequent workshops for parents, teens and tweens, encouraging safe, intentional, balanced technology use through the Conejo Valley Chapter of MAMA.She says, “When MAMA first launched, I heard about it and I knew immediately I wanted to get involved. I loved the idea of having other parents around me and not doing this work solo. I like being with other parents who want the same things for our children and for the community, too. I wanted to do this hand in hand and not by myself.” Effects of Media Addiction & OveruseIf you're like a lot of moms I talk to, you just feel a little “off” when it comes to screens and tech. You know something doesn't feel quite right, but you're not sure why or what exactly to do about it. Scelfo says, “We as a society right now are completely addicted to media and screens. Think of all the places we have screens. They are in our restaurants, they are in our cars, our elevators, our gas pumps. There's almost no place that you can go anymore and just enjoy the natural setting without being bombarded with information.”And this constant exposure comes with some downsides. Acute RisksWe know what dangers look like in the “real world”, but we can't always see what's happening online. Social algorithms often promote content that includes...

Last month's M&W set at Green Bar will be uploaded in a future episode, in order to make way for this month's special "Cali-Jentes West Coast Smooth Jazz" opening set by none other than Markus Jentes, whose birthday we'll be celebrating this upcoming Wednesday July 16.BACKGROUND -For those who aren't aware, Markus (a.k.a. Mark Cali-Jentes) and I, Elian, go way way back. We first played together a Bellissima in the Fort Strip where we were introduced by common friend Wendell Garcia in 2003. As for Inés, she's known Mark as long as I have, maybe even longer, and we're all still the closest of friends today.Aside from being a great DJ, Mark is today one of the Philippines' most engaging artists. You can find his exquisite paintings exhibited in galleries around Manila or on his website at www.markusjentes.art Having studied the visual arts at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles in the 90s, he fell in love with California's brand of smooth jazz, listening to the likes of Bob James, David Benoit, Lee Ritenour, and David Sanborn, to name a few. This is the vibe that Mark recreates in his set for this week's podcast. DJ SETS -Mark and I happen to be performing together this Friday July 11 at the closing party of Chotto Matte in BGC starting at 6pm sharp. So come join us for Happy Hour if you're in the area! We're also celebrating Mark's birthday this upcoming Wednesday July 16 at M&W Green Bar in Legaspi Village, Makati, starting at 5pm. The conversation transitions into discussing Sikhism when Daniel prompts Dyron Daughrity to explain this relatively young religion originating from India. Gajinder Shah Singh shares his personal history, including his journey to the United States in 1971 and his work in Los Angeles. He elaborates on his family's long-standing connection to Sikhism, specifically through the contributions of his forefather to the construction of the Golden Temple. Mr. Singh emphasizes the importance of truth and morality in Sikh teachings and the role of Sikh gurus. The conversation shifts to discuss the similarities and differences between Sikhism and Christianity. Daniel McCoy and Dyron Daughrity note that both religions emphasize a personal relationship with God. However, Christians focus on salvation and faith in Jesus Christ, whereas Sikhs emphasize following the "Five Ks" and living through the teachings in the Guru Granth Sahib. Mr. Singh acknowledges Jesus Christ as a significant religious figure who promoted truth and fought against sin, drawing comparisons to Sikh gurus who also advocated for righteous living. The episode also explores common misconceptions about Sikhs, such as assumptions based on their appearance. Mr. Singh recounts instances of ignorance and highlights the importance of hospitality in Sikh culture. He points out that visiting a Gurdwara (Sikh temple) offers non-Sikhs insight into the Sikh way of life and provides opportunities for building interfaith understanding. Dyron Daughrity further promotes interfaith dialogue by urging listeners to visit local Gurdwaras and experience the welcoming nature and communal meals (langar) provided there. Mr. Singh notes that langar serves practical and symbolic purposes, rooted in agricultural traditions and promoting community and equality. Overall, this episode serves as an enlightening and comprehensive introduction to Sikhism, highlighting the religion's core beliefs, practices, history, and the shared human values of hospitality and truth. The conversation underscores the value of interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding in fostering global harmony.
