It's impossible to distinguish between Randy Weston's musical innovations and his conception of the world he was born into. To say that the roots of jazz are in West Africa is hardly a groundbreaking statement nowadays, but it was a mostly unfamiliar notion when he started to say it in the 1950's. It's easy to hear it now, especially when you listen to Weston's 6+ decade discography. It's in his percussive compositions and it's in the story of his life, making music with players from throughout the African diaspora. To this day, musicians are walking through the doors he opened, more than 6 years after his death at age 92. Pianist Vijay Iyer chose Randy Weston for this Monday's Deep Focus with host Mitch Goldman. What inspired him to make that choice? Was it Weston's distinctive touch on the piano? The warmth and humanity that he exudes? Or maybe just pure admiration for one who always charted his own path? Jazz legend, Randy Weston, more than any contemporary jazz artist, understood, honored and explored the roots of American music in Africa. He lived there, traveled there often, and spoke of his connections to his African ancestors in every interview during his 92 years. In this program, we revisit our musical conversation with Weston in 1998, and sample some of his late solo piano recordings. Produced by Sean Barlow and Banning Eyre. APWW #789
Gnawa musicians have carved out a unique niche within Moroccan society, as people with revered spiritual power who use music and movement to heal the sick. The Gnawas' ancestors came to North Africa as slaves. Today they are an elite class of musicians and spiritualists, celebrated in an annual festival that attracts some 400,000 fans, and invited to collaborate with such notable international artists as jazz legend Randy Weston. In this program, originally produced in 2009, author and scholar Deborah Kapchan guides us through the history, practices, music, lore and unique contemporary stature of the Gnawa, both in Morocco and on the world stage. Interviews with Hassan Hakmoun, historian Mohammed Ennaji, and gnawa scholar Tim Abdella Fuson. Produced by Banning Eyre. APWW #580

Did you know that Sonny Rollins didn't actually write “St. Thomas”. And that Randy Weston recorded this traditional folk song before Rollins, but under the name of “Fire Down There”? And another piece of information: Thelonious Monk's “Japanese Folk Song” wasn't really a folk song—as the writer was known. But it has entered an oral…Continue reading Episode 240:Jazz Interpretations of Folk Songs Part 2

In this episode, musician Nduduzo Makhathini and I talk extensively about African spirituality and cosmology and their influence on his creative process. We discuss the effects of apartheid in South Africa and what it was like for him to grow up in racialized townships. American jazz was an early inspiration; we touch on the legends—including Andrew Hill, McCoy Tyner, Don Pullen, Alice Coltrane, and Randy Weston—who continue to inspire him today. Nduduzo delves into how he approaches live performance and why it's important to him to incorporate history, culture, ritual, and chanting in his shows. Lastly, he shares what it's like being signed to the iconic Blue Note label.
Born in 1967 to the late, great bassist Jamil Nasser, Muneer 's exposure to the jazz idiom was early and powerful. In 1976, "My dad took me to see Dizzy Gillespie at the Village Gate and Dizzy blew the place apart. I had to get a trumpet and weeks later I did." In 1979, he went to the International Art of Jazz Workshop for college students. Dave Burns, a trumpeter in Gillespie's Big Band, had reservations about his age. Muneer's talent, however, overshadowed this concern. "Mr. Burns acceptance fortified my confidence and I began studying with him." Muneer also received private instruction from George Coleman, Jimmy Owens, Oliver Beener, and Webster Young. These workshops and lessons taught him the basics of jazz improvisation, which were tested at serious jam sessions conducted by Eddie Henderson, Ted Curson, Tommy Turrentine, Barry Harris, C Sharpe, and Gil Coggins. "If you couldn't play, they would bench you with quickness and give you a homework assignment." As a youngster, Muneer saw many masters in concert such as George Coleman, Randy Weston, Lou Donaldson, Woody Shaw, Roy Eldridge, and Phineas Newborn.Support the show

Horace Parlan was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and came to prominence with the 1958/59 edition of the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop. after leaving Mingus he recorded prolifically as a sideman and signed a contract with Blue Note Records. His albums did well and he was a busy pianist. He developed a unique style of playing because of a handicap brought on by childhood polio which paralysed two fingers on his right hand. His albums for Blue Note sold well and yet this fine session was never issued until 1986 even though it was recorded in 1963. It was given a catalogue number and advertised but never issued at the time and this is the reason it is being spotlighted as part of our unissued Jazz Features this month. The music is superb and features a great band with Parlan leading on piano, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Booker Ervin on tenor saxophone, Grant Green on guitar, Edward "Butch" Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. 6 original tunes are played by Parlan who wrote 2, Ervin who did 1 as did Johnny Coles and 1 by pianist Randy Weston. The intriguing opener called "Home is Africa" was penned by Sun Ra bassist Ronnie Boykins. The album is called "Happy Frame of Mind" and it's tonight's Jazz Feature.

Before You Go co-host Nicole Franklin has the honor of inviting her longtime friend Juanita Smith who shares memories of her composer husband Hale Smith with Bryant Monteilh and the audience. It's a walk through musical history as Hale Smith's work in the genres of classical, jazz and spirituals brought him, Juanita and their family from Cleveland, Ohio to New York City. Upon arriving in NYC, Juanita quickly found work at the United Nations and Hale was surrounded by a nucleus of talent which included Kathleen Battle, Randy Weston, Melba Liston, Dizzy Gillespie, Ron Carter, Ahmad Jamal and more. Juanita is now the publisher of her late husband's spiritual arrangements and because of her impeccable memory, her stories are filled with evidentiary facts and fascinating encounters. “Fire Down There" Randy Weston Trio: Get Happy (Riverside, 1956) Randy Weston, Sam Gill, Wilbert Hogan. Tonight is our final Feature with drummer/leaders for the month of May. Our Feature artist tonight is one of the most widely recorded drummers in Jazz, Arthur Taylor. After a long career playing and recording with just about every Jazz musician of importance. Arthur Taylor headed for Europe for many years and continued to play with many American ex-pats. Upon his return home he formed a band of young and energetic musicians and resurrected the band name "Taylor's Wailers" that he had used in the 1950's when he gigged as leader. This young band is tonight's Jazz Feature. The album was recorded in 1991 and consisted of Willie Williams on tenor saxophone, Abraham Burton on alto saxophone, Marc Cary on piano, and Tyler Mitchell on bass and Mr. A.T. (aka Arthur Taylor). The band cooks and is all driven by Arthur's amazing big beat. There is a great selection of tunes like the title track written for Arthur by fellow drummer Walter Bolden called "Mr.A.T." Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly" is here along with Mal Waldron's beautiful ballad "Soul Eyes". There are many other highlights on "Mr. A.T." so check it out tonight. "Taylor's Wailers-Mr.A.T.".
This was trumpeter Johnny Coles' debut album under his name and this begins a series for August of rare and sometimes hard to find recordings by artists well known or more obscure. Coles lies in the middle as he like many musicians should be better known. His distinctive approach to the trumpet marked him as being a superbly individual voice. Johnny was widely admired but never achieved that legendary status. This rare date is a fine example of his work and should have placed him in the top rank of trumpeters but instead it became a "collector's item". It was done for Epic Records (a Jazz subsidiary of Columbia Records in 1961. Epic put out some fine dates and some became famous but some remained obscure, this was one of them and it didn't deserve that fate. Johnny picked pianist Kenny Drew for the date as well as John "Peck" Morrison on bass and Charli Persip on drums. At Johnny's request pianist/composer Randy Weston was invited to supervise the playing and interpretation of some of his tunes and on the final two selections Randy takes over the piano chores from Kenny Drew. Randy performs on his song "Where?" and his delightful "Babe's Blues". All in all this was an auspicious debut for Johnny Coles, it's just too bad few people heard it at the time. Hear "Little Johnny C." at his best tonight and enjoy "The Warm Sound".
Trombonist Locksley Wellington Hampton was nicknamed "Slide" as he mastered the trombone. Slide mastered other horns as well but also writing and arranging. He formed a hip working band in the early 60s called "The Slide Hampton Octet". Eight strong pieces but when budgets and circumstances allowed, Slide would augment the Octet for a bigger sound. It is thus with this album called "Sister Salvation" A few horns are added for a bigger sound and more involved writing. The results are a very disciplined recording but even with the tight ensembles and nice background riffs, the air of a small group prevails with lots of inspired solos by a young Freddie Hubbard, tenor saxophone master George Coleman, powerhouse baritone saxist Jay Cameron, Bernard McKinney (aka Kaine Zawadi) on euphonium and Slide Hampton himself on trombone. There is no guitar or piano in the rhythm section but Nabil (Nobby) Totah is a powerful bassist and Pet LaRoca (aka Peter Sims) is a killer drummer. This is a satisfying album for it's combination of small group freedom and the discipline of a big band all thanks to Slide Hampton. Of the 6 tunes, Slide arranged four and composed 3 of the pieces including the gospel flavoured title tune. Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly" is rendered a fine arrangement by Billy Frazier and George Coleman's arrangement of Gigi Gryce's "Minority" is a standout. Sister Salvation is refreshing and fun date and it's nice to know that Slide is still with us.
Obo Addy was one of a kind. The Ghanaian master drummer, bandleader, and teacher who made Portland his home for over 30 years, passed away in 2012, but his influence in Portland and the Pacific Northwest continues. Having spawned a love for African music in musicians and listeners alike, Obo's greatest contribution was his tireless work in the region's schools --providing exposure to African music and culture for generations of children. By the time he died he had performed for over 1 1/2 million people in the United States. And taught tens of thousands of children about the beauty and significance of Ghanaian cultural traditions and music. Susan Addy continues her husbands important work through the Obo Addy Legacy Project. Addy was renowned as a leader, a teacher, an entertainer and an artist of numerous genres. Under his leadership and vision, the Obo Addy Legacy Project concentrated its efforts on producing major artistic performances, teaching in both K-12 schools and at the college level, and writing compositions. “Through his music and teaching, Obo affected hundreds of thousands of lives in the Pacific Northwest and beyond,” said Susan Addy, executive director of The Obo Addy Legacy Project. “His legacy is being written through his commitment to share his talent with young people around the country.” Founded by Obo and Susan Addy in 1986, Homowo African Arts & Cultures originally existed as a virtual cultural center with offerings in schools, parks, community centers and performance venues all over the country. The Obo Addy Legacy Project continues Homowo's valuable work of adding to the quality of life, the diversity and the creativity of the Northwest. “The organization's name has changed, but the vision of Homowo remains the same,” stated Susan Addy. “We will bring meaningful programs to communities encouraging cultural connections, providing a different view of the world and growing as a music and dance professional company as we reach world class status.” Obo Addy Legacy Project, based in the Northwest, provides the world with a non-profit organization which offers authentic experiences with the music and dance of Ghana, West Africa. We create cultural awareness and understanding through our educational offerings and performing groups that tour the world. Obo collaborated with many local, regional and national artists during his storied career, from Randy Weston to Kronos Quartet to Mic Crenshaw, and showed the world that though music and shared culture, we find the bridge back to our shared humanity. We are honored to celebrate his life, work and legacy. Find out more at: http://oboaddylegacyproject.org
