What an absolute honor it is today to have the first ever African American Rockette, the fabulous Jennifer Jones, here with me to talk about her new book Becoming Spectacular: The Rhythm of Resilience from the First African American Rockette, which comes out February 18. What a powerhouse woman Jennifer is. The Radio City Music Hall Rockettes had been in existence for 62 years in 1987, when Jennifer broke barriers and became the first African American Rockette. She made her debut with the Rockettes on January 31, 1988—which was also Super Bowl Sunday, which was in San Diego that year. Jennifer takes us inside that moment in today's conversation; she writes, poignantly, “Making history rarely feels like it in the moment.” Jennifer talks about the struggles she faced and her rock-bottom moments as she worked to achieve this dream; what it was like to be the first; dance and what it has meant to her life; what life as a Rockette was like—and Jennifer would know, as she was one for 15 years; her life after the Rockettes, including joining the cast of the acclaimed Broadway production of 42nd Street; her diagnosis with cancer and how she made it to the other side; and how, in her words from the book, “As I age, I feel more alive than ever.” Quick correction: I said in the episode that Jennifer was given five months to live; it was actually five years to live—but she beat the odds regardless. The Rockettes are an iconic dance troupe, but Jennifer is an iconic woman, and I know you're going to fall in love with her as I did in this conversation. She is a Tony Award-winning dancer, a staunch advocate for equal rights in the arts, and her work has been celebrated by the Harlem School of the Arts, Radio City Music Hall, and Madison Square Garden. She is a survivor of colon cancer, and she fiercely promotes early screenings. She's also written a children's book called On the Line, and there exists a Limited Edition Dancing Jenn Doll, which is reflective of her dedication to the arts. I am so thankful to now know her.Becoming Spectacular: The Rhythm of Resilience from the First African-American Rockette by Jennifer Jones

From it's early days in the 1920's news was an important part of radio. The first newscasts were little more than announcers reading press releases and police reports. In the 1930s and 40s, network newscasts evolved into audio versions of newspaper columns. During the World War Two and into the 1950s there was the arrival of the radio news anchor, who presented reporters on the scene, with commentary confined to the people actually making the news. You're hear this transition develop over decades of radio news coverage. Elmer Davis on CBS Radio in 1939 HV Kaltenborn on NBC Radio in 1940 Walter Winchell in 1941, American Radio's most popular newsman at the time, and was heard on the Blue Network, which later became ABC. Fulton Lewis Jr on the Mutual Radio Network in 1942. Raymond Gram Swing on ABC Radio in 1945 Mutual Newsreel Digest in 1950 Taylor Grant suffers the news anchor's nightmare on ABC in 1953. The legendary Edward R. Murrow on CBS Radio in 1957. Frank Bourgholtzer on NBC Radio in 1961. Charles Osgood before he became famous in 1966 on ABC Radio Bill Maher Jr, father of the famous comedian on Mutual Radio in 1969. Mike Stanley on CBS in 1969. James Limbach on Associated Press Radio in 1977. Al Williams on the Mutual Black Radio Network in 1978. David Leslie on ABC in 1978. Pat Prescott on the National Black Network in 1981. Becky Bailey on Mutual in 1988. Jim Lounsbury on the United Press International radio network in 1989. Sheri Preston on ABC radio in 2004. More at KRobCollection.com

hom Hartmann is an American radio personality, author, former psychotherapist, businessman, and progressive political commentator, whose talk show has been rated in the top 10 shows for over a decade by Talkers Magazine. His most recent book is “The Hidden History of the American Dream?” America, primarily thanks to FDR and unionization, was a catapult for the middle class until the early 1980s. The Reagan influence of Neoliberal economics contributed to the decentralization of regulations, race to the bottom, union busting and globalization for cheaper wages. The National Relations Labor Act legalizing unions was some of the most substantive legislation supported by FDR.  Five suggestions to reactivate the American Dream: 1) encourage unionization and National Labor Relations Act; 2: raise top income bracket for the rich; 3) raise top corporate income tax to reduce bogus tax deductions; 4) reestablish inheritance tax; and,  5) guarantee social safety movement with health insurance.

Hello and welcome back to Chit & Chat; encouraging one another podcast. Today my guest is Michael Powers, and Michael was born in New York City in 1960, but grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. His musical career began as therapy, when at the age of 15 he took up strumming the guitar to strengthen his wrist after a skateboard accident. Following his graduation from Berkeley High School when he was 15½, he moved to Seattle and frequented local jam sessions, keeping his fingers on the guitar strings and his mind on making his music reach a wider audience.  His style was also influenced by a diverse group of musicians which includes Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Charlie Parker, George Benson, Stanley Jordan, Miles Davis, and Kevin Eubanks. He has met so many incredible musicians in the industry that have help him create his very unique style, also please Check out Michaelpowersmusic.com, for more info about his and his schedule as well. I am so excited to speak with him today and get his story and who has encouraged him throughout his career, and he has meet so many incredible people along his journey it's insane, he could write a book of all the people he has met. Not only am I a sharing 2 of his songs, "Return of Summer" but also "Miles From Home" , I am also playing music by: The Chris Jones Band called- American Radio, you can follow Chris at www.chrisjonesband.com Demi Michelle- Follow my Compass; Demi's website is www.demischwartz.com and Jason Biddle called I see the Cross; his website is Jasonbiddlemusic.com As always I am so appreciative of my amazing sponsors. So please check out these amazing local businesses that are in the Kitsap County area. You can find each of these businesses on Facebook and when you check out my website at www.chitnchatpodcast.com, you have the ability to click on each link for their business. From Silverdale Washington, Taquiza & Taquiza Street they have some really good authentic Mexican food, and are locally owned and operated, amazing staff and friendly service and my favorite is the Grilled Jalapenos!! Also Thank you to Double D's BBQ & Smokery, they are a food truck out of Kington, Washington. With some of the best tasting BBQ in the area, they locally owned by Navy Veterans. Finger licking BBQ everytime. Lone Star Donuts with 3 locations in Port Orchard, Silverdale and now in Poulsbo Washington. Great tasting, made fresh every day Donuts!! With nearly 50 kinds they are so so delicious.
