On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down in person with drummer Joe Dyson, the first in-person conversation I've recorded for the show, and it couldn't have been with a better musician or person. Joe is currently on the road with Pat Metheny, and we talk about the experience of being inside that music night after night, how the band continues to grow, how chemistry develops on the road, and what it truly means to live inside the music. We begin at the very beginning, Joe's earliest connection to the drums, growing up in church, watching his family play, and learning through imitation long before formal instruction. That foundation, playing with purpose, listening deeply, and serving something larger than yourself, continues to shape everything he does today. From there, we dive into the cultural impact of growing up in New Orleans and the moment Joe realized just how unique that musical environment is. His reflections on culture, identity, and the preservation of tradition are powerful and deeply personal. One of the most meaningful parts of this conversation centers around mentorship, specifically his relationships with Alvin Batiste and Donald Harrison. Joe shares incredible stories about how these mentors shaped him, not just musically, but philosophically, and how their lessons continue to reveal themselves years later. We also spend time talking about listening, not just as a musical skill, but as a life skill. Joe makes a compelling case that listening is at the center of everything: collaboration, groove, communication, and even being a better human being. We get into his artistic philosophy, how he balances honoring the lineage of great drummers like Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, and Philly Joe Jones while still pushing forward creatively. His perspective on imitation, emulation, and innovation is something every musician can learn from.Joe also shares the incredible (and almost missed!) story of how he connected with Pat Metheny, starting with an email he nearly ignored, and what it's like working with an artist of that level in both live and studio settings. We wrap up by talking about his debut album, Look Within, and how stepping into the role of a bandleader changed his perspective, not just musically, but also in how he approaches collaboration and supports other artists. This is a conversation about growth, humility, and the lifelong process of becoming a musician.Key TakeawaysJoe Dyson explains why listening is the most important skill a musician can develop—on and off the stage. He shares how growing up in church shaped his sense of purpose and connection to music.Joe reflects on the unique cultural identity of New Orleans and its lasting influence on his playing. He discusses the profound impact of mentorship from Alvin Batiste and Donald Harrison.Joe breaks down the process of musical growth: imitation → emulation → innovation. He tells the story of nearly ignoring the email that led to working with Pat Metheny.Leading his own band gave him a deeper respect for collaboration and the responsibilities of being a bandleader.Music from the EpisodePious Walk - Joe DysonForward - Joe DysonFleeting Faith - Joe DysonIn On It - Pat Metheny Side Eye IIINaysayers - Joe DysonAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is my chance to sit down with musicians, composers, songwriters, and creative artists I admire for honest conversations about craft, collaboration, and the deeper musical ideas that shape their work. Milestones: Deep Dive Analyses of Landmark Albums with Angélika Beener
On the latest episode of Milestones: Celebrating the Culture, acclaimed trumpeter Jeremy Pelt joins host Angélika Beener for a conversation that bridges generations of jazz artistry. Pelt convenes a multi-generational ensemble of jazz voices, honoring a defining tradition of the music: the artist as a witness to, and shaper of the times. With his latest album, With Our Community Will Not Be Erased, Pelt offers a deeply felt statement grounded in love, resilience, and collective spirit, reminding us that jazz remains as much about community as it is about individual expression. The conversation also marks the 60th anniversary of Speak No Evil, the 1966 masterpiece by Wayne Shorter that stands as one of the defining works of post-bop music. Featuring an extraordinary quintet of Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones, the album blends haunting lyricism with daring harmonic exploration. Separated by six decades, these two recordings are explored in equal measure as we continue to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Jazz Appreciation Month.

En el centenario del nacimiento de John Coltrane recordamos el disco que el saxofonista grabó en marzo de 1963 con el cantante Johnny Hartman acompañados por Mc Coy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (contrabajo) y Elvin Jones (batería): 'The say it´s wonderful', 'Dedicated to you', 'My one and only love', 'Lush life', 'You are too beautiful'' y 'Autumn serenade'. Para completar la hora, 'I just dropped to say hello', disco que Hartman grabó unos meses más tarde, con los guitarristas Kenny Burrell y Jim Hall, el pianista Hank Jones o el saxofonista Illinois Jacquet, y que contiene canciones como 'Charade', 'In the wee small hours of the morning', 'Don´t you know I care', 'Kiss and run', 'If I´m lucky', 'I just dropped to say hello', 'Stairway to the stars' y 'Don´t call it love'.Escuchar audio
On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Larry Goldings—keyboardist, organist, composer, and one of the most respected musical collaborators working today. Larry has built a career that stretches across jazz, pop, film, television, and session work, but what really stands out in our conversation is his deep commitment to serving the music first. We start by talking about some of the projects currently on his plate. From a new recording with his organ trio featuring Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart, to an unexpected and joyful children's album with tap-dance legend Melinda Sullivan, Larry's creative world is constantly expanding. Whether it's instrumental jazz, singer collaborations, or more experimental projects, his curiosity keeps pushing him into new musical spaces.A major part of the conversation centers on his long-running role in James Taylor's band. Larry shares how he first connected with James in the early 2000s and what it takes to serve those songs night after night at the highest level. Playing alongside musicians like Steve Gadd, he reflects on what he's learned about feel, restraint, and the kind of deep musical trust that makes a rhythm section truly work. From there we head down the rabbit hole into Scary Goldings and Scary Pockets, the groove-driven projects that have introduced Larry to a whole new generation of listeners online. He talks about how those sessions began, why the format encourages spontaneity, and how collaboration and curiosity remain the driving forces behind the music. For the gearheads and music nerds—myself included—we also revisit a memorable moment from the Michael Brecker “Time Is of the Essence” sessions. Larry recalls the experience of playing alongside Elvin Jones, navigating the nerves of the session, and the unforgettable moment when the music suddenly locked into place.Along the way, we also get into the craft of organ playing itself—especially Larry's approach to left-hand bass, and why bass players have influenced his musical language just as much as other organists. At the end of the day, everything comes back to the same principle: serve the feel, serve the song.Key TakeawaysLarry Goldings's current creative projects, including a new organ trio record with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart. The unexpected collaboration with tap-dance legend Melinda Sullivan on a children's album. How Larry joined James Taylor's band and what he's learned from years on that stage. The musical philosophy of rhythm sections built on feel, restraint, and trust, especially alongside Steve Gadd. The origins of Scary Goldings and Scary Pockets and how those sessions reached a global audience online.A behind-the-scenes story from the Michael Brecker “Time Is of the Essence” recording sessions with Elvin Jones. Why Larry's organ language is shaped as much by bass players as by other keyboardists.Music from the EpisodeThe Shakes — Scary PocketsTimeline — Michael BreckerSolid Jack — The Larry Goldings TrioDisco Pills — Scary PocketsArc of the Pendulum — Michael BreckerAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a long-form conversation podcast where host Brad Williams sits down with some of the most thoughtful musicians, composers, and artists working today.
Ravi Coltrane with Marcus MillerMarcus Miller interviews Ravi Coltrane about his musical evolution and the dual legacy of his parents, Alice and John Coltrane. This insightful and candid talk, recorded live on the Journey of Jazz cruise, covers the challenges of growing up under the shadow of a jazz icon and finding one's own voice through the music.Key TakeawaysThe episode is a conversation between host Marcus Miller and guest Ravi Coltrane, focusing on Ravi's development as a jazz saxophonist.Ravi's father, John Coltrane, passed away in 1967 when Ravi was 2 years old, leaving Ravi to be raised by his mother, Alice Coltrane. Ravi notes that his father's instruments are currently in his stateroom.Ravi began his musical journey playing the clarinet throughout junior high and high school. He switched to the soprano saxophone at age 16 after his mother gave it to him for his birthday as a hint, later moving to the tenor saxophone.Ravi did not initially feel pressure from his famous last name because, during the 1970s in the San Fernando Valley where he grew up, John Coltrane was still considered "underground" or "counter culture".The death of Ravi's older brother, John Jr., in an automobile accident when Ravi was 17, caused a "void" that Ravi later filled by studying his father's music. Ravi began listening to his father's records to gain answers for questions asked at parties, and through this, the music "hit" him.Ravi worked with key members of the John Coltrane Quartet, including joining drummer Elvin Jones's band in 1991 (though he felt he was "prematurely" ready) and later working with pianist McCoy Tyner in the 2000s.Ravi and Marcus discuss the meaning of being "ready" to perform at a high level, noting that it means being "prepared to do the job properly" and recognizing that evolution and learning are continuous processes.Host and Guest InfoHost: Lee Mergner (introduction), Marcus Miller (interview).Guest: Ravi Coltrane. This talk was recorded during the Journey of Jazz cruise. Marcus Miller provided the theme music, which is a clip from his song "High Life" on his album Aphrodesia on Blue Note. The talk was captured by Brian Ratchkco and his production team.Send us a text

A Grammy-winning saxophonist who's been on the cover of DownBeat magazine multiple times (as well as many others), a Blue Note Records legend with 25 releases, a Berklee alum, and he holds the Gary Burton Chair in Jazz Performance at Berklee College of Music, which he's had since 2001. He also happens to be my cousin and one of the biggest inspirations and mentors in my life. This was our first time ever doing something like this together. A 3-hour deep dive interview that covers (nearly) his entire career. We go into our family history, growing up in Cleveland, our Sicilian roots, his father Tony “Big T” Lovano, and how that shaped his sound and spirit. We talk about his time with Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Esperanza Spalding, Michael Brecker, McCoy Tyner, Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, Hank Jones, Dave Holland, Joshua Redman, Al Foster, and many more. Joe shares lessons from decades of leading bands, developing tone, mentoring young players, and living a full creative life with his wife of 50 years, Judi Silvano.

This is a rare treat: a former subject of Deep Focus becomes the guest. In 2016, drummer Will Calhoun was our guest for a Deep Focus on one of his heroes, Elvin Jones. Will brought a cassette of a set of music that he had heard as a teenager at the Village Vanguard. At the time, Elvin had an emerging guitarist with a sound entirely unlike that of anyone else who had ever picked up the instrument. For the audience and for this young man, every note that he played brought an amazed sense of wonder and discovery. Little did Will know that, in the years to come, the world would discover Jean-Paul Bourelly's talent, and that he would become a lifelong friend and collaborator. Jean-Paul's music, informed by his Haitian and Chicago Blues roots, as well as hip-hop, West African traditions, and his own unbridled creative imagination, is still immediately recognizable and entirely beyond category. The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

(S4 Ep18) The Real McCoy (Blue Note) with guest Steve Myerson October 1967, Recorded April 21, 1967 The Real McCoy (1967) is a landmark album by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, marking his first solo release after leaving John Coltrane's legendary quartet. With a stellar lineup featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones, the album showcases Tyner's unique modal jazz style, blending African rhythmic influences and his signature wide interval voicings. The album's compositions, all written by Tyner wrote, demonstrate his incredible range as a pianist and composer, with tracks like "Passion Dance" and "Contemplation" now regarded as jazz standards. The interplay between the musicians is dynamic, with Henderson's fluid solos, Carter's solid bass work, and Jones's explosive drumming providing a perfect backdrop for Tyner's improvisations. The album balances uptempo tracks, like "Four by Five," with slower, more meditative pieces, such as "Search for Peace," highlighting Tyner's ability to navigate diverse moods and textures. The Real McCoy is widely praised for its deep emotional resonance and technical brilliance, solidifying McCoy Tyner as one of his generation's most influential jazz pianists.Signature Tracks: "Passion Dance", "Contemplation", "Four By Five" Full Album YouTube Spotify Playlist YouTube Spotify

More than 25 years ago, I met tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson who was raised in Denver Colorado and that meeting made a wonderful memory and a deep impact that still resonates with me today. It impressed me that he took the time out of his very busy and impressive career to offer his time in a very giving manner to help a small-town, non-profit radio station. But that is just the kind of person he is, one who gives back and makes a difference. He is still doing that today as the Chair of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford since 2013. Besides being a dedicated educator, Javon has also been a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; he has recorded over two dozen albums as a leader and has also recorded with such jazz legends including Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Louis Hayes and of course, Art Blakey and others. It was serendipity that led to Javon forming a friendship and collaboration with the influential poet and activist Nikki Giovanni. Giovanni was invited by Javon to lecture at the University. Discovering they had a shared love of jazz music which resulted in this duo recording an album together called ‘The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni.' The relationship between the two has only deepened through the years, and from that, other shared passions have emerged. One of them, American cinema, is referenced in the title of their recent and much-anticipated follow-up album called ‘Javon and Nikki Go to the Movies.” This is the subject of my conversation with Javon Jackson which begins with a reference to another one of Jackson's musical influences...Sonny Rollins.
Tonight's Jazz Feature is again a double header. First off is a regular feature for this time of year that is both educational and very entertaining and brings us into the "back to school" idea that is celebrated in the month of September. It is Maestro Leonard Bernstein's "What is Jazz". Bernstein through a whole variety of musical examples explains what Jazz is and what it isn't in a clear non technical way. Later on he analyses a standard pop song interpreted by a variety of Jazz players from various eras and breaks it down into simple parts that the lay person can understand. The recording was made in the mid-50's but is still valid and fun to listen to. Enjoy. Our second Jazz Feature is a lesser known album by tenor and soprano saxophone master John Coltrane who today, September 23 celebrates a Birthday Anniversary. The Jazz feature album is called "Ole Coltrane" and it was his final recording for Atlantic records before he switched to Impulse Records. Coltrane had already recorded his first session for Impulse and he was reminded that he owed Atlantic one more album. He assembled a group of musicians some who would become regular members of his working band. Coltrane assembled young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and alto saxophonist/flutist Eric Dolphy who did become a regular for several months in Coltrane's band. Pianist McCoy Tyner is heard of course and two fine bassists, Art Davis and Reginald Workman who both were part of Coltrane's regular band and of course the dynamic Elvin Jones on drums. The longest and most iconic tune on this set recorded on May 25, 1961 is "Ole" a Spanish flavoured excursion. "Dahomey Dance is the second Coltrane original and is an altered blues. McCoy Tyner's tribute to his wife is the set's ballad and titled "Aisha". A final tune added to the CD issue was Billy Frasier's "To Her Ladyship", a tribute to Billie Holiday. All in all a very fine and sometimes overlooked album by the great master John Coltrane.

Saxophonist John Coltrane (born Sept 23, 1926), is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential musical voices of the 20th Century. His influence can't be overestimated; literally every musician who followed him has been shaped by his innovations and contributions to the music. A member of Miles Davis' first great quintet, Coltrane also played with Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and many other jazz greats before forming his ground breaking quartet in 1960 with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones. Together, this band reshaped the jazz landscape as none had before or since.

We were joined by countercultural historian Pat Thomas, and Peter Hale, manager of the Ginsberg estate, and discover their new collaboration Material Wealth Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg.*A prolific poet, raconteur, activist, and thinker, Allen Ginsberg was also a prolific collector, meticulously saving letters, postcards, draft notes and manuscripts, photographs and snapshots, appearance bills and rally broadsheets, not only featuring him personally, but also his fellow poets, singers, lovers, writers, journey companions, friends, and agitators. Gathered here publicly for the first time is his personal archive of events and experiences documenting his life as a young man, breakaway poet, expansive spirit, curious intellectual traveler, and relentless enthusiast of the provocative and the profane. There are hundreds of thousands of items carefully stored and archived at Stanford University's Allen Ginsberg collection. River Guerguerian is a percussionist and composer that has toured the world sharing and in search of sound. His parents observed his love of percussion early. He was the kid in school obsessed with transcribing drum solos by greats like Elvin Jones and Max Roach and would go on to study music from around the world. He is as comfortable with the limits of a single frame drum as he is with his world drum set including typical western trap kit pieces like bass and tom toms along with drums from around the world including the djembe, doumbek, and several other instruments. If you are reading this soon after it is released you can catch him live with his group, Free Planet Radio, in Asheville at the AyurPrana Listening Room on March 16, 2024. You can also see him performing at Big Ears Music Festival with Min Xaio-Fen for a commission from the Smithsonian Institution to compose soundtracks for two Chinese historical silent films, Romance of the Fruit Peddler and Romance of the Western Chamber. River is also the music director at Odyssey Community School in Asheville, NC and is the founder of Rhythm Asheville. Conversations with River during private music lessons were on of the inspirations for me in starting this podcast. Ra Kalam Bob Moses spent his youth growing up in New York City and living in the same building as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Elvin Jones, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. This early experience had a profound effect on this young musician. Ra Kalam would go on to work with jazz luminaries such as Gary Burton, Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow, Jack DeJohnette, Tisziji Muñoz and many others. He was also a member of the group The Free Spirits in the 1960's, considered one of the first Jazz rock bands ever. Many were introduced to Ra Kalam's drumming by way of Pat Metheny‘s very first solo record Bright Size Life in 1976 with Jaco Pastorius on bass. Ra Kalam is also a composer and leader on many recorded projects, going back decades. In this episode, Ra Kalam talks about: His thoughts on the documentary being made about him Growing up in the same building as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Elvin Jones, Rahsaan Roland Kirk in New York Getting beyond your tendencies and patterns His relationship with teacher and musical collaborator, Tisziji Muñoz The origin of his name “Ra Kalam” Reconciling his own legacy Upcoming recordings

In this hilarious episode of Comes a Time, Mike and Oteil dive into stories from Oteil's recent tour, including an epic night where he dressed up as Macho Man Randy Savage. Oteil describes committing fully to the outfit, despite how hot and restrictive the costume was, and cutting promos in character as he made his way through the crowd to the stage. He even had his tour manager Jake come out as Jake "The Snake" Roberts for the full WWE experience. Mike is thrilled to hear about Oteil embracing his silly side on tour. Mike and Oteil discuss the unique acoustics and visual experience of playing the Las Vegas Sphere, a brand new, state-of-the-art immersive venue opening soon. With no on-stage amps or monitors, the venue itself becomes the sound system. They fantasize about collaborating with visual artist Jonathan Singer to create a mind-blowing psychedelic show inside the Sphere. Oteil also shares stories of combat gigs dealing with bad sound, and how veteran performers like Elvin Jones project their sound to the back of big rooms. Looking ahead, Oteil only has one gig on the books for the rest of the year - two nights opening for Bob Weir in Florida. Otherwise, he's focused on spending the holidays with his family. Mike has stand-up shows across the country leading up to the release of his new comedy special "Don't Let Me Down" on YouTube on November 9th.
