(S4 Ep18) The Real McCoy (Blue Note) with guest Steve Myerson October 1967, Recorded April 21, 1967 The Real McCoy (1967) is a landmark album by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, marking his first solo release after leaving John Coltrane's legendary quartet. With a stellar lineup featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones, the album showcases Tyner's unique modal jazz style, blending African rhythmic influences and his signature wide interval voicings. The album's compositions, all written by Tyner wrote, demonstrate his incredible range as a pianist and composer, with tracks like "Passion Dance" and "Contemplation" now regarded as jazz standards. The interplay between the musicians is dynamic, with Henderson's fluid solos, Carter's solid bass work, and Jones's explosive drumming providing a perfect backdrop for Tyner's improvisations. The album balances uptempo tracks, like "Four by Five," with slower, more meditative pieces, such as "Search for Peace," highlighting Tyner's ability to navigate diverse moods and textures. The Real McCoy is widely praised for its deep emotional resonance and technical brilliance, solidifying McCoy Tyner as one of his generation's most influential jazz pianists.Signature Tracks: "Passion Dance", "Contemplation", "Four By Five" Full Album YouTube Spotify Playlist YouTube Spotify

More than 25 years ago, I met tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson who was raised in Denver Colorado and that meeting made a wonderful memory and a deep impact that still resonates with me today. It impressed me that he took the time out of his very busy and impressive career to offer his time in a very giving manner to help a small-town, non-profit radio station. But that is just the kind of person he is, one who gives back and makes a difference. He is still doing that today as the Chair of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford since 2013. Besides being a dedicated educator, Javon has also been a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; he has recorded over two dozen albums as a leader and has also recorded with such jazz legends including Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Louis Hayes and of course, Art Blakey and others. It was serendipity that led to Javon forming a friendship and collaboration with the influential poet and activist Nikki Giovanni. Giovanni was invited by Javon to lecture at the University. Discovering they had a shared love of jazz music which resulted in this duo recording an album together called ‘The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni.' The relationship between the two has only deepened through the years, and from that, other shared passions have emerged. One of them, American cinema, is referenced in the title of their recent and much-anticipated follow-up album called ‘Javon and Nikki Go to the Movies.” This is the subject of my conversation with Javon Jackson which begins with a reference to another one of Jackson's musical influences...Sonny Rollins.
Tonight's Jazz Feature is again a double header. First off is a regular feature for this time of year that is both educational and very entertaining and brings us into the "back to school" idea that is celebrated in the month of September. It is Maestro Leonard Bernstein's "What is Jazz". Bernstein through a whole variety of musical examples explains what Jazz is and what it isn't in a clear non technical way. Later on he analyses a standard pop song interpreted by a variety of Jazz players from various eras and breaks it down into simple parts that the lay person can understand. The recording was made in the mid-50's but is still valid and fun to listen to. Enjoy. Our second Jazz Feature is a lesser known album by tenor and soprano saxophone master John Coltrane who today, September 23 celebrates a Birthday Anniversary. The Jazz feature album is called "Ole Coltrane" and it was his final recording for Atlantic records before he switched to Impulse Records. Coltrane had already recorded his first session for Impulse and he was reminded that he owed Atlantic one more album. He assembled a group of musicians some who would become regular members of his working band. Coltrane assembled young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and alto saxophonist/flutist Eric Dolphy who did become a regular for several months in Coltrane's band. Pianist McCoy Tyner is heard of course and two fine bassists, Art Davis and Reginald Workman who both were part of Coltrane's regular band and of course the dynamic Elvin Jones on drums. The longest and most iconic tune on this set recorded on May 25, 1961 is "Ole" a Spanish flavoured excursion. "Dahomey Dance is the second Coltrane original and is an altered blues. McCoy Tyner's tribute to his wife is the set's ballad and titled "Aisha". A final tune added to the CD issue was Billy Frasier's "To Her Ladyship", a tribute to Billie Holiday. All in all a very fine and sometimes overlooked album by the great master John Coltrane.

Saxophonist John Coltrane (born Sept 23, 1926), is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential musical voices of the 20th Century. His influence can't be overestimated; literally every musician who followed him has been shaped by his innovations and contributions to the music. A member of Miles Davis' first great quintet, Coltrane also played with Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and many other jazz greats before forming his ground breaking quartet in 1960 with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones. Together, this band reshaped the jazz landscape as none had before or since.

Trumpeter, composer/arranger Thad Jones born March 28, 1923, was the middle son in a family that also produced younger brother Elvin Jones, perhaps best known as John Coltrane's longtime drummer, and pianist Hank Jones, who performed and recorded with almost everyone in his long career, as one of the first black musicians to have a long and fruitful career in the New York studios. Thad first made his mark on the national scene as a soloist and arranger/composer for the Basie band in 1954. When he moved to New York City in the 1960's, he founded a big band he co led with drummer Mel Lewis that still plays weekly at the Village Vanguard, still playing much of the music Thad wrote. In 1979 he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark where he lead the Danish Radio Big Band, and taught at the Royal Danish Conservatory. In 1985 he took over leadership of the Basie Band, but tragically passed way in 1986 of cancer.
We were joined by countercultural historian Pat Thomas, and Peter Hale, manager of the Ginsberg estate, and discover their new collaboration Material Wealth Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg.*A prolific poet, raconteur, activist, and thinker, Allen Ginsberg was also a prolific collector, meticulously saving letters, postcards, draft notes and manuscripts, photographs and snapshots, appearance bills and rally broadsheets, not only featuring him personally, but also his fellow poets, singers, lovers, writers, journey companions, friends, and agitators. Gathered here publicly for the first time is his personal archive of events and experiences documenting his life as a young man, breakaway poet, expansive spirit, curious intellectual traveler, and relentless enthusiast of the provocative and the profane. There are hundreds of thousands of items carefully stored and archived at Stanford University's Allen Ginsberg collection. Counterculture historian Pat Thomas, with the full cooperation of the Allen Ginsberg Estate's Peter Hale, has compiled and annotated a remarkable volume of material, unearthing in the process one astounding find after another. The result is a tome of previously unpublished historical paperwork and vintage graphics and photographs and ephemera that promises an unprecedented look inside one of the most prolific poets and agitators of cultural mores of the 20th century.*Pat Thomas is a counterculture historian and archival music producer (and liner-note writer) whose expertise and interests have helped him author such books as Listen, Whitey! The Sights & Sounds of Black Power 1965–1975 and Did It! Jerry Rubin: An American Revolutionary. He has co-curated Invitation to Openness: The Jazz & Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980, co-edited My Week Beats Your Year: Encounters with Lou Reed, an anthology of interviews about the iconic musician, and contributed to The (Original) Adventures of Ford Fairlane: The Long Lost Rock n' Roll Detective and Kerouac on Record: A Literary Soundtrack. Thomas was a consultant on the PBS documentary The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution and compiled the 3-CD box set The Last Word on First Blues for the Allen Ginsberg Estate (1970s recordings of Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, and Arthur Russell), and the 2-CD set Songs of Innocence and Experience of Ginsberg's 1969 recordings (with Don Cherry and Elvin Jones) putting William Blake poems to music with vocals by Allen.Peter Hale grew up in Italy, Germany, and then Boulder, CO where he earned a BA in Classics, Greek & Latin, from the University of Colorado, all the while attending classes in music, poetry and meditation at Naropa University. He became part of the staff at Allen Ginsberg's office in 1992, and in 1997 helped craft his posthumous estate, which he currently manages. He studied Guitar with Dave Van Ronk & Danny Kalb, and Piano with Peter Barbieri. He currently produces his own music, and djs around NYC. River Guerguerian is a percussionist and composer that has toured the world sharing and in search of sound. His parents observed his love of percussion early. He was the kid in school obsessed with transcribing drum solos by greats like Elvin Jones and Max Roach and would go on to study music from around the world. He is as comfortable with the limits of a single frame drum as he is with his world drum set including typical western trap kit pieces like bass and tom toms along with drums from around the world including the djembe, doumbek, and several other instruments. If you are reading this soon after it is released you can catch him live with his group, Free Planet Radio, in Asheville at the AyurPrana Listening Room on March 16, 2024. You can also see him performing at Big Ears Music Festival with Min Xaio-Fen for a commission from the Smithsonian Institution to compose soundtracks for two Chinese historical silent films, Romance of the Fruit Peddler and Romance of the Western Chamber. River is also the music director at Odyssey Community School in Asheville, NC and is the founder of Rhythm Asheville. Conversations with River during private music lessons were on of the inspirations for me in starting this podcast. In this hilarious episode of Comes a Time, Mike and Oteil dive into stories from Oteil's recent tour, including an epic night where he dressed up as Macho Man Randy Savage. Oteil describes committing fully to the outfit, despite how hot and restrictive the costume was, and cutting promos in character as he made his way through the crowd to the stage. He even had his tour manager Jake come out as Jake "The Snake" Roberts for the full WWE experience. Mike is thrilled to hear about Oteil embracing his silly side on tour. Mike and Oteil discuss the unique acoustics and visual experience of playing the Las Vegas Sphere, a brand new, state-of-the-art immersive venue opening soon. With no on-stage amps or monitors, the venue itself becomes the sound system. They fantasize about collaborating with visual artist Jonathan Singer to create a mind-blowing psychedelic show inside the Sphere. Oteil also shares stories of combat gigs dealing with bad sound, and how veteran performers like Elvin Jones project their sound to the back of big rooms. Looking ahead, Oteil only has one gig on the books for the rest of the year - two nights opening for Bob Weir in Florida. Otherwise, he's focused on spending the holidays with his family. Mike has stand-up shows across the country leading up to the release of his new comedy special "Don't Let Me Down" on YouTube on November 9th. Ok, it's not that hard to edit and put up one of these episodes, so why did this take so long? Well, life and how we do it is a little more confusing since Milo left the Minneapolis. But now he's in the BIG APPLE-ISS and THIS IS OUR FIRST LONG DISTANCE EPISODE! We talk about a new life in New York, which in Milo's case involves bumping into a jazz guitar legend, college, roommates, classes, pet turtles, A LOT of jazz vernacular and yes, missing home. Tonight's Jazz Feature celebrates the 97th Birthday Anniversary of John William Coltrane. Coltrane needless to say was one of the most iconic and influential saxophonists in contemporary Jazz and despite his short life which ended at age 40, he accomplished so much and left and enormous legacy. Tonight's Jazz Feature is the first official recording of Coltrane's "Classic Quartet" called "Coltrane". It was done over several sessions in April, June and November of 1962 and produced 5 selections. The "Classic Quartet" included McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums and of course, Coltrane on This album represents a formidable beginning of Coltrane's musical journey.. Tonight's Jazz Feature: the music of John Coltrane.
San Francisco movie and media critic Pam Grady joins us and she finally brings Westerns into OMFYS with ZACHARIAH (1971), a homoerotic oater starring John Rubenstein and a very young Don Johnson as star-crossed gunslingers who just can't quit each other on their road to hippy-dippy enlightenment. Billed as "The First Electric Western," Country Joe & the Fish, the James Gang and the New York Rock Ensemble show up with their late-1960s Gibson guitars and Fender stacks even though everything else about the movie takes place in the 19th Century. John Coltrane drummer Elvin Jones nearly steals the show by shooting a dude and then playing a kick-ass drum solo. ZACHARIAH is streaming on YouTube but this DVD-rip on Archive is far superior so Airplay that to your flat screen: https://archive.org/details/zachariah-1971-dvdrip-xvi-d Our second feature is the very-noir psychological western PURSUED from tough guy director Raoul Walsh in 1947. The Hollywood pothead par excellence ROBERT MITCHUM plays Jeb Rand who struggles to recall the massacre of his family through repressed memories and expressionist dream sequences. Making the past more than prologue is that the people who slaughtered the Rands are still plotting to finish the job. Also starring Teresa Wright as Jeb's love interest and sister-by-adoption (ew); Judith Anderson as the matriarch who's definitely keeping secrets; and the Skipper's dad, Alan Hale Sr. New Mexico's landscapes are brought to life in PURSUED by the breathtaking cinematography of James Wong Howe and it's all set to a sweeping Max Steiner score. Bob and Cory also discuss how Raoul Walsh got his eyepatch plus the ghastly prank the great director played on Errol Flynn, so wait for that. Maggie speaks with Grammy-winning music historian, journalist, producer, and educator Ashley Kahn about Evenings At The Village Gate: John Coltrane With Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. In 1961, the John Coltrane Quintet played an engagement at the legendary Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York. Coltrane's Classic Quartet was not as fully established as it would soon become and there was a meteoric fifth member of Coltrane's group those nights— visionary multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy. Ninety minutes of never-before-heard music from this group were recently discovered at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, offering a glimpse into a powerful musical partnership that ended much too soon. In addition to some well-known Coltrane material (“My Favorite Things”, “Impressions”, “Greensleeves”), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy's bass clarinet on “When Lights Are Low” and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane's composition “Africa”, from the Africa/Brass album. This recording represents a very special moment in John Coltrane's journey—the summer of 1961—when his signature, ecstatic live sound, commonly associated his Classic Quartet of '62 to '65, was first maturing and when he was drawing inspiration from deep, African sources— and experimenting with the two-bass idea both in the studio (Olé) and on stage. This truly rare recording of "Africa" captures his expansive vision at the time.Ashley Kahn is a Grammy-winning American music historian, journalist, producer, and professor. He teaches at New York University's Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music, and has written books on two legendary recordings—Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and A Love Supreme by John Coltrane—as well as one book on a legendary record label: The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. He also co-authored the Carlos Santana autobiography The Universal Tone, and edited Rolling Stone: The Seventies, a 70-essay overview of that pivotal decade. His latest book is entitled George Harrison on George Harrison: Interviews and Encounters. Born on June 16, 1965, in Carthage, Missouri, Javon Jackson was raised in Denver, Colorado and chose saxophone at the age of 10. At age 16 he switched from alto to tenor and later enrolled at the University of Denver before spending part of 1985–86 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He left Berklee in 1986 to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he later played alongside pianist Benny Green, trumpeter Philip Harper, trombonist Robin Eubanks and bassist Peter Washington. Jackson remained a fixture in the Jazz Messengers until Blakey's passing in 1990. In 1991, Jackson made his recording debut with Me and Mr. Jones, featuring James Williams, Christian McBride, and master drummer Elvin Jones. He joined Jones' group in 1992, appearing on the great drummer's albums Youngblood and Going Home. Jackson's 1994 Blue Note debut, When the Time Is Right, was a straight-ahead affair produced by iconic jazz vocalist and bandleader Betty Carter. His subsequent four recordings for the Blue Note label through the ‘90s were produced by Craig Street and featured wildly eclectic programs ranging from Caetano Veloso, Frank Zappa and Santana to Muddy Waters, Al Green and Serge Gainsbourg. His subsequent four recordings for the Palmetto label had him exploring a blend of funk, jazz and soul with such stellar sidemen as organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, guitarists Mark Whitfield and David Gilmore, trombonist Fred Wesley and drummer Lenny White. In 2009, Javon was commissioned by the Syracuse International Film Festival to compose a full-length score for the Alfred Hitchcock film, “The Lodger,” a silent movie based on the hunt for Jack the Ripper. The original score had its debut at the festival, performed live by Jackson's band (featuring pianist Manasia) at the film's screening in October 2010. In 2012, the saxophonist released a potent tribute to a towering influence, Celebrating John Coltrane, his inaugural release on his Solid Jackson Records which featured the venerable drummer and former Coltrane collaborator Jimmy Cobb. He followed later in 2012 with Lucky 13, which featured the great soul-jazz keyboardist Les McCann and included a mellow instrumental rendition of Stevie Wonder's “Don't You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” along with a version of McCann's 1969 hit, “Compared to What.” That same remarkably productive year, Jackson was the recipient of the prestigious Benny Golson Award from Howard University in Washington, D.C. for recognition of excellence in jazz. Jackson's debut on the Smoke Sessions label, 2014's Expression, was a live quartet recording from the Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in Upper Manhattan. On February 18, 2022, Javon will release, The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni, his fifth album for his Solid Jackson Records label. Jackson finished and received his undergraduate degree from the Berklee College of Music and obtained a master's degree from the State University of New York at Purchase, where he also taught. In 2013, he accepted the position of Professor of Jazz Saxophone; Director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz Studies at the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music, Theatre and Dance. In this episode, Javon shares his background, education, and musical journey. Thought it was a good time to do a tribute to one of my favorite indie labels, PM Records. Listening to their music is kind of like a sci-fi-jazz-adventure, where the sound isn't easily labeled but the music is taking the listener in all kinds of directions while keeping a solid groove. Hope you dig it! Tracklist: Steve Grossman, Doug Riley, Stone Alliance, Elvin Jones, Stone Alliance, Steve Grossman, Pat Labarbera, Don Thompson
The list of legendary drummers that played with the late Wayne Shorter is absolutely incredible. Mark Griffith takes us through each album and stage in Waynes career and which iconic drummer was involved at any given time.
