BEHIND THE LENS #475: Featuring Duncan Skiles and Lorcan Finnegan

An interesting movie mix for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director DUNCAN SKILES and his new film NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, and director LORCAN FINNEGAN and his latest THE SURFER. As different as night and day, both films showcase storytelling creativity and some incredible – and indelible – performances, most notably from Nic Cage in THE SURFER. First up, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH. Directed by DUNCAN SKILES, who you may know best for directing THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH rises and falls on the compelling mystery plot and the performances by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ed and Jack Quaid as Simon. As you will hear from Duncan in this pre-recorded exclusive interview, he was drawn to writer Sean Farley's script for its unique and heartwarming dynamic between Ed and Simon. Duncan found it sweet, bittersweet, and not overly sentimental. The script had a mix of elements – thrills, mystery, and comedy – which appealed to him, and which he brings to life with a naturalistic look and feel thanks to cinematographer Luke McCoubrey. After THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, Duncan was looking for something lighter, and this script was an easy read where he found himself rooting for the characters and wanting to spend time with them. Then we switch gears and hit the western coast of Australia with the sun and the surf with director LORCAN FINNEGAN and THE SURFER with a total mind fuck, batshit brilliant performance by Nic Cage. Needless to say, I love this movie! A psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man identified as "The Surfer" – played by Cage – returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, played by Finn Little of "Yellowstone" fame. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals led by Scally – maniacally played by Julian McMahon – whose mantra is "don't live here, don't surf here." Humiliated and angry, "The Surfer" is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point. Take a listen as Lorcan breaks down THE SURFER from Cage to story to casting to cinematography to editing to sound to score, and even the appearance of native snakes and a kookabura. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Happy Halloween! Duncan Skiles, director of the chilling The Clovehitch Killer and the forthcoming comedy thriller Neighborhood Watch, went trick or treating into the oubliette and brought back a Peeping Tom. This proto-slasher from Michael Powell, one half of the famous British duo Powell and Pressburger, emerged in the same year as Hitchcock's Psycho and explores similar territory: a handsome, unassuming man with a homicidal compulsion spurred by parental abuse. But while one film was an instant box office sensation that became a landmark in horror history, the other was savaged by scandalised critics and destroyed its director's career. Rescued from obscurity over a decade later by Martin Scorsese, Peeping Tom has become an influential cult favourite. But does it deserve to escape the oubliette with a fulsome sack of calorific treats? Or should it be thrown back with some candy corn and a rotten apple? Find out! Duncan Skiles, director of The Clovehitch Killer, returns for our special festive episode, in which we review a yuletide tale of a plucky kid who uses booby traps to repel a home invasion. No – not that one! It's the French horror/thriller Deadly Games (1989) – also known as 3615 code Père Noël and about a dozen other titles. It was released a year before Home Alone and is a lot darker. As in 'irreparable child trauma' darker. But bizarrely, it also features a cute grandpa and a gauzy montage set to an original Bonnie Tyler Christmas song. But is it a delightful, previously unwrapped Christmas gift or is it a bag of coal? Christopher Ford's rise to becoming a highly regarded Hollywood screenwriter is a story within itself.  Back in 2010, he was discovered by Eli Roth when Ford along with director Jon Watts (SPIDER-MAN:  HOMECOMING) did a short film as a yarn to get the attention of the famous director.  After deciding to produce a film based off the short, the movie CLOWN (2014) was made.  That movie jump started the careers of both Watts and Ford.  And by 2018, a hidden gem of a film (written by Ford) appeared called THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER. Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is the perfect high school student.  He's in the scouts, is an outstanding member of his church, and has a loving family.  One day when he discovers an S&M picture in the family truck, he begins to wonder if his dad is more than the great father that he had thought.  Working with his friend Kassi (Madisen Beaty) they begin to travel down a “rabbit hole” that may turn their life and their town upside down. The movie, directed by Duncan Skiles, stars Dylan McDermott in the pivotal role of Tyler's father.  With excellent acting, including Samantha Mathis as Tyler's mother, the movie feeds doubts into the thoughts of a young man about his ideal life.  What follows is the slow fall of what otherwise was a perfect family.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this very interesting film and gives their thoughts.

Duncan Skiles, director of 'The Clovehitch Killer', returns to discuss a popular source of childhood nostalgia: Disney's Flight of the Navigator (1986). It focuses on David Freeman, who falls into a ravine in 1978 and wakes up 8 years later to discover he hasn't aged, while his parents look like they've been in quarantine the whole time and his bratty little brother is now a 16-year-old hottie who says 'rad' a lot. Everything makes more sense when he's reunited with a UFO shaped like a Guylian chocolate driven by a robot who sounds suspiciously like Pee-Wee Herman and goes on the run from a strangely authoritarian NASA. This has everything you want in a kid's sci-fi movie: pioneering CGI effects, a giant eyeball that screeches like Yoko Ono and Sarah Jessica Parker hitting on a 12-year-old because he's, you know, technically 20. But does it live up to the fond memories or should it be forgotten forever? Find out by listening! COMPLIANCE!

Duncan Skiles grew up in a movie-loving family. He started off making movies with friends and family, before he took a stab at professional films. For this feature, he teamed up with Christopher Ford - hot off the script for ‘Cop Car’ - and they paired up for ‘The Clovehitch Killer.’ The mystery stars Charlie Plummer and Dylan McDermott and exists within the vein of ‘Rear Mirror’ or ‘Disturbia,’ with a twist. The official plot reads, “ A picture-perfect family is shattered when the work of a serial killer hits too close to home. McDermott stars in this chilling portrait of all-American evil.” In this interview, Skiles discusses his love of cinema, the origin story and influences behind ‘Clovehitch,’ making a disturbing movie set in daytime, the necessity of trial and error, moving from over-the-top to reserved works, and creating outcasts in film. This week, the Grue-Crew fall prey to a cult of demon worshipers and avoid the trappings of a serial killer with dastardly intentions. Two new films are reviewed this week. The first is THE HERETICS from director Chad Archibald follows a young woman who is running from her past only to be abducted once again to face a fate worse than death. The second film is THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER from director Duncan Skiles tells a coming-of-age story where a young boy suspects a notorious killer's identity may reveal the monster to be too close to home.  Doc Rotten and Vanessa Thompson from Horror News Radio along with Jeff Mohr from Decades of Horror: The Classic Era share their thoughts about this week's awesome collection of streaming horror films.  Gruesome Magazine Podcast - Episode 043 The Clovehitch Killer - The Heretics The Heretics A notorious cult kidnaps a young girl, and sacrifice themselves by the light of the locust moon. The next morning the girl awakes, caked in dried blood and surrounded by corpses...but safe - or so she thinks. Years later, the locust moon is about to rise again and the girl is captured once more by a surviving member of the cult. She is taken to a remote cabin where she learns that a demon has been growing inside of her all these years, and before the dawn, it will rise. "From beginning to end, I was engaged in the story, so yeah, kudos to the director and everybody in The Heretics!" - Vanessa "It was a fun watch. I was in it the whole way. … It’s definitely worth a watch." - Jeff "Chad Archibald did a great job and I’m looking forward to more from him. … This has definitely solidified him as one of the talents to keep an eye on." - Doc Director: Chad Archibald Cast: Nina Kiri, Ry Barrett, Jorja Cadence Release: The Heretics available on Demand November 6 and DVD January 5 from Uncork’d Entertainment. The Clovehitch Killer A shocking revelation turns a teenage boy's world upside down in this chilling look at the evil that can lurk below even the most wholesome surface. Tyler Burnside is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad. Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives in: the unsolved murders in which ten women were brutally tortured and killed by a psychopath known as Clovehitch-that rocked the community more than a decade ago. When Tyler discovers a cache of disturbing images in his father's possession, he begins to suspect that the man he trusts most in the world may be Clovehitch-and that his deadly rampage may not be over. With unrelenting tension, director Duncan Skiles crafts a picture-perfect vision of the all-American family-and then piece by piece rips it to shreds. "Two minutes in and I was in love with Dylan McDermott. I’ve never seen him do anything like this before. He’s almost completely unrecognizable because he so becomes this character." - Vanessa It’s not your everyday serial killer movie. I think the script and the acting and the direction are excellent at taking you on the journey through this film and keeping you guessing. I think Dylan McDermott, Charlie Plummer, and Madison Beaty really excel." - Jeff "This is a great surprise because it is not what the trailer suggests it is. It is a far richer, far deeper, far more interesting piece of film and the relationship between these characters is a big part of what makes this work." - Doc Director: Duncan Skiles Cast: Charlie Plummer, Dylan McDermott, Samantha Mathis Release: In Theaters, On Demand and Digital HD: November 16, 2018 from IFC Midnight

The New Romantic is a 2018 Canadian romantic dramedy, written and directed by one of today's guests, Carly Stone. It stars the luminous, lovely Jessica Barden and manages to deconstruct the dating scene in a very unexpected way. It was a pleasure to talk with the writer/director about how her personal experiences informed this story among many other topics of discussion. The Clovehitch Killer is a 2018 mystery thriller, written and directed by my other guest, Duncan Skiles. Like many of us, he developed a fascination with the horrors of the world, taking a cue from Zodiac to tell a Hardy Boys-like tale of a teenager who thinks his father may be up to no good. Charlie Plummer, Dylan McDermott, Samantha Mathis are among the excellent cast in a very unnerving tale of paranoia and obsession. Duncan has a lot of influences and favorite films that I certainly respect and agree with to boot! It was an honor to talk with two young, amicable and incredibly smart filmmakers making their debuts that will be playing either at a theater near you or via video-on-demand very soon. I recommend both titles and I know you'll get a kick out of our conversations even if you're unfamiliar with the names yet. 00:00 - 11:11 - Introduction 11:12 - 23:35 - Interview w/Carly Stone (The New Romantic) 23:36 - 43:20 - Interview w/Duncan Skiles (The Clovehitch Killer)
