Lorcan Finnegan's wild and weird trip-fest flick The Surfer is one that's had local audiences salivating at the prospect of its arrival. That anticipation went into hyperdrive when Oscar winning actor and walking cult-factory Nicolas Cage was announced as the leading man, a bloke returning home to the South West to buy his family home, reconnect with family, and surf a little. His idea of a Christmas sojourn is scarpered when 'the locals', headed up by Julian McMahon at his career best, thwart his chance of escaping the heat and securing the home he has his eyes on.The Surfer is, admittedly, a divisive flick, with reactions ranging from comparisons to Wake in Fright, to our own critic Cody Allen voicing displeasure with it. I personally found the film akin to that of a dehydrated fever dream, as if you're continually out of reach of hydrolytes and salvation, so instead you have to resort to drinking dog shit filled water and maybe chowing down on local rodents to get by. It's sweaty, filthy, and at times, oddly representative of what it feels like to visit Margaret River and Yallingup after downing too many bevvies at Beerfarm. And yeah, those comparisons to Ted Kotcheff's flick feel apt given its presentation of masculinity, but to me it's more like a West Aussie version of the seventies thriller The Swimmer. There's something really sweaty about The Surfer, a mystery embedded in a world of mean and mad folks who each have a sly streak of cruelty, wrapped up in that familiar Aussie friendliness. I was never sure where Lorcan Finnegan and writer Thomas Martin was taking me, but I was bloody happy to be dragged along in the process. There's a risk taking mindset to The Surfer, one that pushes at the boundaries of what Aussie films or stories can be. If this is where Aussie stories told from non-Aussie perspectives might be going, then strap me in, I'm on for the whole ride.As Western Australia ramps up to becoming a full throttled filmmaking state with the 2026 arrival of our first 'film studios', it then became a good time to touch base with surrogate sandgroper Robert Connolly, this time wearing a producer hat, to talk about his role in bringing The Surfer to WA shores, what his experience of having made films like Paper Planes and Blueback brings to a major production like this one, and additionally, what his producing presence means for filmmakers, actors, and Aussie creatives. It's always a delight to be able to talk to Robert, just as it's been a delight to be able to see the global reaction to a film like The Surfer. If you're in Australia, you'll have your chance to catch the film on the big screen - just how it's meant to be seen - from 15 May, before it heads onto Stan. later in the year.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. An interesting movie mix for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director DUNCAN SKILES and his new film NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, and director LORCAN FINNEGAN and his latest THE SURFER. As different as night and day, both films showcase storytelling creativity and some incredible – and indelible – performances, most notably from Nic Cage in THE SURFER. First up, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH. Directed by DUNCAN SKILES, who you may know best for directing THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH rises and falls on the compelling mystery plot and the performances by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ed and Jack Quaid as Simon. As you will hear from Duncan in this pre-recorded exclusive interview, he was drawn to writer Sean Farley's script for its unique and heartwarming dynamic between Ed and Simon. Duncan found it sweet, bittersweet, and not overly sentimental. The script had a mix of elements – thrills, mystery, and comedy – which appealed to him, and which he brings to life with a naturalistic look and feel thanks to cinematographer Luke McCoubrey. After THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, Duncan was looking for something lighter, and this script was an easy read where he found himself rooting for the characters and wanting to spend time with them. Then we switch gears and hit the western coast of Australia with the sun and the surf with director LORCAN FINNEGAN and THE SURFER with a total mind fuck, batshit brilliant performance by Nic Cage. Needless to say, I love this movie! A psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man identified as "The Surfer" – played by Cage – returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, played by Finn Little of "Yellowstone" fame. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals led by Scally – maniacally played by Julian McMahon – whose mantra is "don't live here, don't surf here." Humiliated and angry, "The Surfer" is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point. Take a listen as Lorcan breaks down THE SURFER from Cage to story to casting to cinematography to editing to sound to score, and even the appearance of native snakes and a kookabura. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Taking inspiration from Frank Perry's 1968 film THE SWIMMER, Cage stars as a man who starts to lose everything, including his sense of self, when he faces off against a group of surfers in Australia led by Julian McMahon!

Rest assured, meron kayong karamay because we all wish we could just sit and watch TV all day. Unsay wa sa huna huna. Last but not the least, from Jeon Do-Yeon the restaurant owner in Crash Course in Romance just a few weeks ago, we now get into Jeon Do-yeon the fearsome assassin as we talk about Kill Boksoon! “I made a fake trailer as a collage project — a remake of the shoemaker and the elves, with these evil puppets — and I think that's when I realized I didn't need to describe my process.” This led him to becoming a film director. Finnegan is best known for Vivarium (Imogen Boots, Jesse Eisenberg) where “a young couple looking for the perfect home find themselves trapped in a mysterious labyrinth-like neighborhood of identical houses.” His most recent project, Nocebo (Eva Green, Mark Strong) is about “a fashion designer suffering from a mysterious illness that puzzles her doctors and frustrates her husband, until help arrives in the form of a Filipino carer, who uses traditional folk healing to reveal a horrifying truth.” In this interview, Finnegan talks about doing his own visual effects early in his career, why he hates “smash cuts” in screenplays, why some directors hate “over description,” how novice filmmakers can make interesting contained thrillers and how to make a good movie with the budget you have. Sawyer once pulled a con in exchange for an early release from prison. Ben is Jigsaw now. M. C. and Andrew are ill-prepared, albeit enthusiastic, to tackle the patriarchy. Lorcan Finnegan, you're on blast, bro. RIP Anton Yelchin
2019's Vivarium is a simple movie that is anything but. A dazzling array of beautiful imagery with terrifying implications, it's a thought-provoking new spin on the ever popular “stuck in a loop” trope. But does it work? Come along with us as we lift up the sidewalk to find out. Plus: how Dustin would react if he starred in the film, our unusual Knotfest line-up, the torture of being forced to watch Rob Schneider's stand-up live, and a lot, lot more. Listen to our episode and be released.Vivarium stars Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg, Eanna Hardwicke, and Jonathan Aris. Today Lorcan Finnegan Joins me. Lorcan is a Director and a writer. His new film VIVARIUM premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2019 in competition at Critic’s Week and won The Gan Foundation Distribution Award.Vivarium has been described as one of the best sci-fi, psychological drama movies by many viewers. Vivarium explores many ideas surrounding the human cycle of life, modernity and the disconnection with nature, and how outside expectations influence our decisions which in turn shape our lives. Featuring Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots, a couple trying to find a new place to live, Vivarium works perfectly as a metaphor on how our current society behaves. As you will listen, I loved this movie and speaking with Lorcan was a very amazing experience. Hope you go watch Vivarium as soon as you finish this episode (warning: spoilers ahead). ---Website - https://lorcanfinnegan.com--- Highlights —2:24 The inspiration behind Vivarium.6:06 Are we living in Vivarium?8: 55 The paradox of happiness.14:30 Are we connected to our community? Cucks, large adult sons, parasitic super-organisms: Vivarium has it all! Lorcan Finnegan’s surreal take on modern horror was one that we liked overall, even if some of us were underwhelmed by the ending. Trying to solve the mystery of The Boy/Martin was a definite highlight, especially unpacking the ways in which the story incorporates Irish folklore and real-world biology. The story wraps up like an old episode of the Twilight Zone, which could be good or bad depending on which of us you ask. The art direction and set design also stood out, as did the performances and imaginative use of CGI. We determine in this episode that horror for a young audience is essentially just real life, and when it comes to life there’s only one rule: good vibes only. HEAVY Mag chats to Lorcan Finnegan the director of new sci-fi horror Vivarium.
Programledare: Lisa Wall Producent: Eskil Krogh Larsson

Film critic Lisa Nesselson speaks to Eve Jackson about the week's film news, including coronavirus-safe red carpets, how to get the real cinema experience in your own home and the online retrospective of American independent filmmaker Mark Rappaport from the Munich Film Museum. She also gives us the week's film picks, including Romanian director Anca Damian's "Marona's Fantastic Tale" and Irish director Lorcan Finnegan's dystopian oddity "Vivarium."
This week we decided to feature a movie about a couple confined to their home, painfully devoid of social interaction and wasting away until their eminent death. No we weren’t just FaceTiming, we were watching Vivarium, the sci-fi/thriller from newcomer Lorcan Finnegan. For Our Week in Entertainment, we decided to chose movies that reflect the phrase “Reality Bites” interpret that as you will. Lastly, we find all the rum has mysteriously disappeared as we put the career of Captain Jack - I mean Johnny Depp, In Focus.
Join us as we dive into the Lorcan Finnegan directed supernatural-horror flick, VIVARIUM, and all the impressively whacky stuff this movie throws at you. Listen on....

We take a close look at a strange, and very disturbing film, VIVARIUM, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, which looks like a sci-fi movie but comes across more as a horror film… but one with a bizarre twist.
Alex Billington (firstshowing.net) and Mike Eisenberg reconnect for a discussion about about two small scale, contained sci-fi films: Vivarium, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, and also The Platform (aka El Hoyo in Spanish), directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, on this latest episode of The First Word Podcast. Featuring film writer John Bleasdale as our guest discussing both films and their commentary on modern society.
On this episode (once again recorded via Skype), Jim was joined by Banterflix's very own Darren Vincent and local filmmaker Jim McMorrow as they chatted about Lorcan Finnegan's Vivarium and Patrick Lussier's Trick, both of which are now available to buy or rent through various online retailers. Chilling sci fi satire on this week's episode with an interview with Vivarium director Lorcan Finnegan, appropriately atmospheric for isolated viewing. Giles and Robbie open the pod with news on the latest MakeYourFilm online summit event amid the lockdown, followed by Robbie's interview with the writer/director. Lorcan discusses his roots in graphic design, beginnings in TV, commercials and webisodes before charting his route into film with award-winning short Foxes, which gave him the kudos to launce two features, his first film Without Name and the much longer gestating Vivarium, out now on demand. For the more analytical we talk colour theory and set design, and for producers taking notes we talk finance, as Lorcan reveals the story of how the film came together from an impressive array of European funding bodies. We also discuss casting the leads, Imogen and Jesse, and how folklore and parable play into the film's story. It's Fantasia season over at The Spool, as the Montreal-based genre film festival gives us access to all kinds of spooky new treats from independent filmmakers and foreign outlets alike. One of the most exciting films to come out of the fest is Vivarium, a haunting high-concept headscratcher from Lorcan Finnegan (Without Name) about a young couple (Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots) lured to a mysterious new housing development called Yonder, only for them to get lost within its confines. Minimalist science-fiction hellscapes are a particular passion of mine, and Vivarium looks to carry all the appropriate Twilight Zone/Black Mirror vibes to explore the homogeneity of suburbia, not to mention the anxieties of taking such a big leap in a budding relationship, all through a starkly horrific lens. The production design is stippled with endless rows of eerily identical McMansions, lit with foggy dread by Finnegan's DP MacGregor, a haunting stage for the drama on display. I got to speak to Finnegan about all these concerns - how Vivarium got started, working with A-listers like Eisenberg and Poots, and just what scares him so much about suburbs. Take a listen! (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. Thanks to Overcast for sponsoring this episode!)
Following a screening of Without Name at the IFI, director Lorcan Finnegan took part in a Q&A with Mark Sheridan to talk about his supernatural eco-horror film.
