Dans son premier récit paru aux Éditions Marchialy, le journaliste Hugo Nazarenko Sas retrace avec brio l'histoire rocambolesque d'un vaste réseau de voleurs de cornes de rhinocéros, qui a sévi un temps en Europe et au-delà. Une histoire savoureuse et tragique à la fois. C'est un récit qui commence tel un polar, par une découverte terrifiante au milieu d'un champ de tournesols du Loiret, en France. Là, au beau milieu de ce champ, un agriculteur découvre avec stupeur, au sol, la tête mutilée d'un animal jamais vu dans ces contrées, les deux cornes coupées : une tête de rhinocéros. À partir de là, se déploie une toile et une histoire parfaitement vraie, captivante, qui nous emmène de zoos en petits muséums d'histoire naturelle français, chez des taxidermistes américains aux douanes françaises jusqu'en Irlande, en passant par le Vietnam, les grands parcs nationaux africains ou la Chine.  Et c'est bien cette ampleur internationale, ce réseau hallucinant, progressivement mis à jour par le journaliste français spécialisé dans les crimes environnementaux dans Le Gang des voleurs de Cornes, qui fait le sel et le grain de son livre…  Car il nous révèle ou rappelle des routes insoupçonnées : celles du trafic d'animaux sauvages, quatrième marché illicite le plus lucratif au monde ; un trafic mondialisé et sans scrupules, à l'image de notre monde, qui vient aussi puiser ses racines dans la colonisation et un certain rapport à l'Afrique, perçue comme un terrain de chasse et de prédation.  Au fil de son livre, il nous embarque aussi à la rencontre de la communauté des « Travellers », des nomades indigènes d'Irlande, dont certains membres ont parcouru l'Europe, à partir de 2010, en quête de cornes et de trophées de chasses coloniaux dans les musées ou châteaux d'Europe et constitué ce fameux gang de voleurs. We also look at investor recoupment, how a small indie film might calculate its potential rental revenue, and why filmmakers should work backwards from realistic distribution revenue when setting a movie's budget. If you're financing, producing, or distributing an independent movie, understanding the economics of VOD can help you make much smarter decisions before production begins.

Harry Dodge and Silas Howard talk with Mike about By Hook or By Crook, their 2001 queer-cinema landmark, now touring U.S. theaters and streaming on VOD in a new 4K restoration. The pair met working at a dyke-run cafe in late-1980s San Francisco, and trace the film's origin story to an absurdly literal turning point: Dodge getting a cigarette-littering ticket that forced a thirteen-hour drive to Portland and back, during which the idea for a buddy story about Shy (Howard) and Valentine (Dodge) started to take shape.They talk about writing the script out of their own friendship rather than research, shooting for thirty days on dot-com money borrowed from newly flush friends, and staffing the crew almost entirely with fellow San Francisco artists and musicians. Berner talks with Mike about Splash City, the crime thriller he co-wrote, co-directed, produced, and financed himself — inspired by San Francisco's real-life "bipping" (smash-and-grab) epidemic. The Bay Area rapper and Cookies cannabis founder describes handing his own outline to co-writer David to build into a full screenplay, turning over most of the directing to his creative partner Alex, and stepping behind the camera himself for six scenes when the shoot ran out of money.He talks about the film's ballooning budget (from a planned $500,000 to $2 million), the two-year in-house edit at his own Cookies offices, scrapping and re-recording the score until it felt right, and the wild disparity between a quiet industry screening at Lionsgate and the 640-person standing ovation at Oakland's Grand Lake Theater.Splash City is now available to rent or buy on digital and VOD, following a limited theatrical run and a cross-country tour-bus screening tour. JUST PLAY DEAD marks a different sort of challenge for Martin Campbell. The director, best known for GOLDENEYE, CASINO ROYALE and THE MASK OF ZORRO, is used to staging rough-and-tumble fights, car chases, fiery explosions. But JUST PLAY DEAD posits its tension around a couple whose marriage gasps its last breath in service of a wicked game of wits.In JUST PLAY DEAD, Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Wolfe, a career criminal whose empire looks to crumble as the feds will indict him for financial frauds within a few months. Nick's plan is to fake his own death and pocket the life insurance payout with his wife, Nora (Eva Green), whose lover Chad (Jason Fernandez) will be framed. One problem: Nora actually wants Nick dead.But Nick didn't get to this age, wealth and notoriety by being naive. Nora didn't spend 11 years married to Nick without also knowing that he would grow wise to whatever plan she'd concoct. It's in this back-and-forth that JUST PLAY DEAD shines. These people are not "good" people but they surely don't hate each other. One moment where Nora lays in bed with her other lover, a cop, has her bemoaning that she could have any stud in bed. The trick, she says, is finding someone she can talk to.For as much as the husband and wife cross each other, they find a sick sense of play in it. Campbell could easily toss a chessboard in the middle of the living room, if he were a worse director. It's in Jackson and Green's banter that Nick and Nora's marriage takes its last gasping breaths, a look into what qualities attracted them together and ultimately, lead them to mutual admiration and even, if I dare say it, respect. But there's no way they'll stay together. Jesus Christ, what a nightmare.In our interview, Campbell discusses the joys of crafting this kind of marriage, the process of leaning into its gauche beachside melodrama and the fearlessness required of any actor to engage with this goofy-ass world, something that Eva Green, especially, handles with aplomb.
