Mikey Garcia, VP of Advertising Engineering at Wurl, joins host AdTechGod to explore how AI, contextual intelligence, and FAST are reshaping connected TV advertising. They discuss scene-level targeting, smarter CTV signals, ad relevance, overlay ads, and why contextual advertising could unlock the next wave of CTV ad spend. Takeaways: AI is making scene-level contextual targeting in CTV more accurate and scalable. FAST enables real-time contextual signals that can better match ads to what viewers are watching. Whirl found viewers changed channels 60% more when ads were irrelevant. Contextual works best alongside audience targeting, adding relevance and improving performance. Better content intelligence could drive more transparency, smarter buying, and greater CTV ad spend. When the wild turns on you, instinct is all you've got. Sharks, chimps, gators, lions — and now bears step into the spotlight. Grizzly Night, the new survival thriller that clawed its way onto VOD on January 30th, 2026, brings that primal fear front and center. The film draws its inspiration from a chilling true story first told in Jack Olsen's 1969 bestseller Night of the Grizzlies. The heart of the movie beats with a real historical nightmare. As IMDB recounts, “On August 12th, 1967, in Montana's Glacier National Park, the unthinkable happened: On the same night, nine miles apart, there were not one—but two—fatal grizzly bear attacks.” It's the kind of event that reshapes how we think about the wilderness.Directed by Burke Doeren and written by Katrina Mathewson and Katrina Bean, the film brings together a cast that blends horror pedigree with fresh energy. Scream queen Brec Bassinger leads the charge alongside Jack Griffo, Charles Esten, Oded Fehr, Josh Zuckerman, and Matt Lintz. With critics and audiences giving it solid marks, your co‑hosts dive in to see whether the movie lives up to its terrifying legacy.
I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with a very familiar face in the indie horror scene. His latest film, My Best Friend's Dead, takes us to a remote New England town where a desperate attempt to resurrect a loved one unleashes a terrifying demonic presence. He plays Brent, a character caught directly in the crosshairs of missing persons, dark secrets, and bloody chaos. His performance as Brent adds such a great layer of tension to the farmhouse's growing body count. For everyone watching or listening at home, make sure to queue up My Best Friend's Dead, which is currently available on VOD and digital platforms. Keep your eyes on Dylan Grunn's upcoming projects because he continues to be an absolute powerhouse in modern genre cinema.
Evan Hayes is an Academy Award-, BAFTA-, and Emmy-winning film producer whose nearly three-decade career has included major studio films and acclaimed documentaries, with credits on projects such as Everest, Burn After Reading, and Les Misérables. He reached the pinnacle of his career producing Free Solo, which won the 2019 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, and has since continued producing both documentary and scripted projects. Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageJim Orr is President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution at Universal Pictures. He began his career at Paramount and joined Universal in 2016 after leading distribution at Focus Features and MGM. Brandon Purdie is Executive Vice President and Head of Theatrical Distribution at Angel Studios, the audience-funded studio behind Sound of Freedom, where he helped build a community-driven model that puts greenlight decisions in the hands of its 2.4 million members. Host Kevin Goetz brings the two together for a wide-ranging conversation on how films find audiences in an era of theaters, streaming, VOD, and direct fan engagement. From Del Monte to Distribution (08:41): Orr recounts talking his way into a sales job at Del Monte out of college, then cold-calling studio distribution heads until Paramount hired him on the spot. The Roadshow Era and the First Wide Break (11:36): Orr traces distribution's earliest days, when prints traveled by car with regional reps, through to the thousand-plus theater breaks standard by the time of Star Trek.Content Is Still King (23:02): Both guests agree the movie itself remains the deciding factor in box office success, with Purdie noting a quiet week usually just means there isn't a film people want to see yet.Building Angel Studios from a Membership, Not a Subscription (30:02): Purdie explains Angel's founding principle: no executive can greenlight a film without approval from the Angel Guild, whose members vote on projects and get free tickets to every release.Pay It Forward and the Sound of Freedom Phenomenon (34:06): Purdie details how Angel's "Pay It Forward" ticketing model generated more than $20 million in donated tickets, helping turn Sound of Freedom into a summer 2023 box office surprise. The Green Book Playbook (44:27): Orr points to Green Book as his proudest Universal moment, explaining how a deliberately limited release avoided split grosses and let the film build week over week toward a Best Picture win. What Keeps Them Up at Night, and the Next Five Years (49:26): Purdie names human apathy as Angel's biggest threat. Orr predicts modest theater consolidation and growth in premium formats, while Purdie sees Angel continuing to scale its guild and slate.Host: Kevin GoetzGuests: Jim Orr and Brandon PurdieProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Jim Orr and Brandon Purdie:Jim Orr (Universal Pictures): https://www.universalpictures.com/leadership-team/?name=jim-orrJim Orr (LinkedIn): https://www.linkedin.com/in/jim-orr-50ab7b8/For more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com
Will & Jared sit down with their friend and comic book store manager Deric Sullivan to discuss the newest entry in the James Gunn DC verse: Craig Gillespie's Supergirl.Does Supergirl prove that DC movies still have the juice? Making Erupcja in Warsaw, Poland, with Charli XCX and a small, experimental production model How SAG's Global Rule One affected the budget of an international indie production Premiering at TIFF and navigating sales conversations with CAA and multiple distributors Why Pete chose One Two Special based on alignment, communication, and “vibes” Building a release around Q&As, theatrical events, and in-person audience engagement Creating playful marketing assets, including a zine, a voicemail phone line, and fan-edit materials Releasing trailer stems and encouraging remix culture around the film How theatrical box office expectations were framed for a movie made under $100,000 The limits of relying on actors or stars to carry indie film promotion Why filmmakers should treat Q&As as another form of storytelling The idea of “regional filmmaking” and creating meaningful local releases Finishing and releasing projects as part of sustaining a long-term filmmaking practice Memorable Quotes: “We went to Poland in August of 2024 for two weeks with half of an outline and shot the movie in order.” “If the numbers were better or the percentages were better, but the vibe was worse. No Film School's GG Hawkins talks with filmmaker Shane Brady and producer Emily Zercher-Brady about turning a devastating real-life hack into the revenge comedy-horror feature Hacked: A Double Entendre of Rage Fueled Karma. The conversation covers the couple's filmmaking origin stories, how losing $20,000 sparked the movie's premise, why they pushed forward after their budget was cut in half, what it took to shoot between Los Angeles and Florida during the SAG strike, and how they approached building a collaborative low-budget set. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins, Shane Brady, and Emily Zercher-Brady discuss... How Shane's early love of horror movies, theater, magic, and performance led him into filmmaking Emily's background in performance, leadership, and problem-solving as the foundation for producing How Shane and Emily began working together through Camp Hollywood short films with young actors The real-life hack that drained $20,000 from their savings and became the emotional starting point for Hacked Calling the FBI, dealing with law enforcement limitations, and channeling frustration into a revenge story Why they decided to keep going after the movie's budget was cut in half just weeks before filming How Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer production story inspired them to get scrappy Navigating the SAG interim agreement process while Emily was pregnant Splitting production between Funko Studios in Los Angeles and locations in Tampa, Florida Creating a “socialism set” where cast and crew were treated as equal creative collaborators Working French hours, offering hot meals, and protecting crew morale on a low-budget shoot Building festival relationships that helped lead to their distributor, Scatena & Rosner How they are thinking about audience outreach, VOD, and asking viewers to support independent filmmakers Memorable Quotes: “The absolute number one thing I want in my life is to be remembered, and when I'm gone and in the dirt, people can put on a film or a TV show or a recording of a play or something.” “Make it work and nobody can know that anything is going wrong.” “We have the money to film the thing.” “Everyone is equal playing fields and cast and crew, like you all mean everything and are a special piece of the puzzle.” “Everything that you work towards and someone just goes click.” Guests: Shane Brady Emily Zercher Resources: Hacked: A Double Entendre of Rage Fueled Karma on IMDb Where to watch Hacked: A Double Entendre of Rage Fueled Karma Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram

Welcome back to the podcast, everyone. Today, we are examining the architecture of memory, trauma, and the blurred lines of reality. Hitting theaters and VOD on June 12, 2026, is a film that I promise is going to get under your skin. It's called This Tempting Madness, a breathtakingly tense psychological thriller that marks the feature directorial debut of Jennifer E. Montgomery. Now, if you think you've seen all sides of Bridgerton superstar Simone Ashley, think again. She delivers a raw, bold, and genuinely transformative performance as Mia, a woman who awakens from a coma with a fractured memory, a grievously injured body, and the devastating realization that the man she loves is completely missing. Alongside an incredible supporting cast, the film takes us directly inside Mia's disoriented mind as she tries to piece together a past she can no longer trust. But what makes This Tempting Madness truly unforgettable is where the story came from. This isn't just a Hollywood script; it is deeply inspired by a harrowing true story. Director Jennifer E. Montgomery wrote the film with her longtime collaborator and spouse, Andrew M. Davis, after living through her own firsthand tragedy. Years ago, Montgomery watched her own best friend's life quietly collapse over a period of six months—culminating in an act of severe violence. When her friend finally woke from a coma, those entire six months of memory were completely gone. Instead of making a straightforward documentary, Jennifer and Andrew built an immersive cinematic landscape that mirrors how trauma actually works—in loops, contradictions, and shifting colors. From a custom score built literally out of Simone Ashley's own vocal tones to vintage Panavision lenses that make the frames feel like unpredictable memories, every single detail of this film was crafted to make us question what is real right along with Mia. We are incredibly lucky to have the mastermind behind this phenomenal film with us today. Joining me to talk about the immense responsibility of turning personal trauma into art, pushing cinematic boundaries, and running towards the fire of complex storytelling... please welcome the director and co-writer of This Tempting Madness, Jennifer E. Montgomery!
