Cinema's dirtiest little secret is that it's designed to make you want something you can never have.In this episode of Celebrating Cinema, host Laura Gommans and Tom Ooms — LAB111's Head of Cinema — talk about what cinema's fixations have done to them. Laura learned to write in Elvish because of The Lord of the Rings. Tom is still working out how much of his idea of relationships comes from Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958). We have all spent more time thinking about actors and characters we will never meet than is probably reasonable. Parasocial attachment used to be the strange edge of fandom. Now it's the default condition of watching. The conversation moves through 60 years of films about obsession — Vertigo, Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960), and what they made possible: Misery, Perfect Blue, La Pianiste, Whiplash, Babygirl — but the question underneath is the one cinema doesn't like to answer. What does this kind of looking do to the people being looked at? The actor engineered into someone else's ideal. The face that turns into a brand. And whether cinema knows what it's done to us, or is still pretending it doesn't.A film podcast from LAB111 — Amsterdam's arthouse cinema for independent and cult films. Programmed alongside the Can't Get You Out Of My Head season. Produced by Elliot Bloom. Tickets at lab111.nl/obsession.

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's April, so that means it's time for our “No EscApril” series, where we celebrate the wonder of thrillers! Not quite horror, not quite action, that sweet spot in the middle where danger is afoot, and lives are still on the line! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest K-Tron discuss Brian De Palma's 1984 entry in the “pro-peeping tom propaganda” subgenre, Body Double! Excessive voyeurism! Open disdain for subtlety! Inept cops! A hotdog-shaped hotdog store! A bizarre and touchy acting class/therapy session! Troy McClure's weird Chemosphere house from The Simpsons! An insane Frankie Goes To Hollywood music video in the middle of the movie! Hide and seek-related trauma! A claustrophobic sardine who can't scream! A platinum blonde 80s vampire! Motion sickness-inducing bed drinking! A blatantly labeled door! Cultural insensitivity! A dizzying and confusing makeout session! A disturbing drill with a surprisingly short power cord! The Gone with the Wind of adult films! A random Nostromo hat from Alien! R-rated end credits! Rear projection and matte paintings! Great cinematography and camerawork, including several split diopter shots! An excellent musical score from Pino Donaggio! A fun cast that includes Dennis Franz, Barbara Crampton in her first role, Craig Wasson being convincingly pervy, and a fearless Melanie Griffith! All that and more in this unapologetically 80s thriller that explores the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, and may be the pinnacle of HitchSchlock! In addition, Tim recommends Sam Raimi's Send Help, K-Tron discusses the trippy 1961 film The Mask, while Alex gives his spoiler-free thoughts on Lee Cronin's The Mummy, the new Faces of Death, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and the Netflix shark thriller Thrash! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris and Tim Gardiner, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from two filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Twitter, Bluesky, or Letterboxd @actionharris. You can follow K-Tron on Letterboxd @puddingtaco. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. Episode 1960: Evan, Rémy & Marcs break down Peeping Tom (1960), the controversial film that wrecked Michael Powell's career before being rediscovered as a foundational proto-slasher and a deeply disturbing psychological profile of its killer. We dig into its voyeuristic horror, and critical backlash. If you are able to support Tom Fitzgerald, please sign up for the OFH Patreon: http://patreon.com/onefuckinghour
In this episode, we take a deep dive into Peeping Tom, the chilling and controversial psychological thriller directed by Michael Powell. Upon release, the film was condemned, misunderstood, and effectively ended Powell's career in the UK. Decades later, it's recognized as a foundational work of modern horror and a precursor to the slasher genre. We unpack the story of Mark Lewis, a withdrawn cameraman who films the fear of his victims as he murders them—turning the audience into uneasy accomplices. Along the way, we explore how the film forces viewers to confront their own voyeurism, the ethics of spectatorship, and cinema's power to manipulate. The episode examines:How Peeping Tom weaponizes the camera as both a literal and psychological toolThe disturbing father-son experiment at the heart of Mark's traumaThe film's influence on later works like Psycho and the entire slasher traditionThe themes of voyeurism, repression, and the act of watching as complicityWe also discuss Powell's stylistic choices, the use of color and framing, and how the film blurs the line between filmmaker, character, and viewer in a way that still feels unsettling today._____________________________________________________________Feel free to email at silverscreenvideopodcast@gmail.com with any comments or thoughts. On episode 148 of the Director Watch Podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter discuss the final film in their Powell and Pressburger series, Peeping Tom (1960). Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. After decades of working together, the Archers split up towards the end of the 1950s, ending one of the greatest cinematic partnerships of all time. For both, they went on to make more films, but none of them reached the heights of their collaborations, with Pressburger being the less successful of the duo. For Michael Powell however, he made one key piece of art from the two of them that lasted in Peeping Tom, a provocative thriller about a killer who stalks his pray and films the murders of his victims. Shocking for the time, it basically forced Powell into retirement, but is now revered as a champing of pushing the medium forward, and being a masterclass in directorial creation of tension. Ryan and Jay break down their thoughts on the film and the controversy surrounding it, the break-up of Powell and Pressburger, if the shocking nature of the film has aged well, and their complete rankings of the films of the Archers, while also previewing their next films series. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen on the AW YouTube page. This podcast runs 2h03m. The guys will be back next week to begin their series on the films of Charles Burnett with a review of the film, Killer of Sheep. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. On episode 147 of the Director Watch Podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter are joined by Pop Culture Confidential host Christina Jeurling Birro to discuss the latest film in their Powell and Pressburger series, The Tales of Hoffmann (1951). Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to break down, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. In a massive pivot in the type of film the Arches have made before, comes the film that was the last great film from them before their partnership broke. The Tales of Hoffmann follows a poet's glamorous, gorgeous journey of recounting his past failed romances, and in doing so, the directors examine, in excellent fashion, the cost it takes to make art, and the sacrifices it takes to collects along the way. Ryan, Jay, and Christina break down their thoughts on the film, how meta the opera is for the directors, the crumbling of the Archers relationship, preview Peeping Tom, and go over the three sections of the film that make the film so elegant. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen on the AW YouTube page. This podcast runs 1h55m. The guys will be back next week to conclude their series on the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger with a review of the film, Peeping Tom. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. December was a rough month off-mic, fighting illness and holiday chaos, but we're back now to finally ask: What if the found footage was real…and the scariest thing wasn't the monster, but the filmmaker? This week, we're digging into Butterfly Kisses (2018), Erik Kristopher Myers' razor-sharp found footage deconstruction that asks a deeply uncomfortable question: how far will an artist go to be believed? The film follows Gavin York, a documentarian who stumbles upon a box of tapes left behind by two film students investigating an urban legend known as Peeping Tom. What starts as a forgotten student project quickly spirals into obsession, as Gavin sets out to “prove” the footage is authentic—dragging his own film crew (and his sanity) down with him. Part found footage, part academic critique, Butterfly Kisses plays in the same sandbox as The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and The Last Exorcism, then calmly turns to the camera and asks whether we actually want these stories to be true. It's less about jump scares and more about ego, credibility, and the uniquely modern horror of needing proof at any cost. Found footage skeptics welcome. Film nerds encouraged. Peeping Tom is watching either way. We also talk about hockey, Primate, and Strange Harvest. We're girls of simple taste.
A controversial classic that's just as weird and off-putting now as it was when we started this podcast. And we watched Peeping Tom!

This week, the boys drink some whiskey and head to 1960 to discuss the less famous slasher movie of the year, “Peeping Tom”! Directed by Michael Powell, this film was a major inspiration for Martin Scorsese and a terror to the people of England, leading to its removal from theaters after only 5 days. Unlike “Psycho”, it was subsequently banned from many other countries… yet today, this movie feels like a tone poem of modern culture. In Part 5 of this multi-part docu-series, award winning host Kelly Jennings brings you into the sleepy community of St. Francisville, Louisiana where single mother Collette Walker became a victim of numerous incidents of stalking at the hands of Derrick Todd Lee (DTL) including a Peeping Tom incident in which Colette's children were suddenly missing. Her interactions with DTL would culminate with Lee standing in her bedroom in the middle of the night, awakening herself and her boyfriend, and resulting in Lee' disappearing into the night through the woods of St. Francisville. Derrick Todd Lee (DTL) terrorized the Baton Rouge and Lafayette Louisiana. A Serial Killer who took the lives of at least (7) women in the late 1990's and early 2000's, Lee's reign of terror finally ended in late May of 2003 when he was captured in Atlanta, GA after being linked by DNA to several of the murders. This is DTL Hosted by Kelly Jennings and produced by the experts at Envision Podcast Productions. For Media or Advertising Inquiries Envisionpodcaststudios@gmail.comTimestamps05:41 The Chase for Justice09:29 The Elusive Evidence11:07 A Shocking Confession13:28 The Night of Surveillance15:18 The Fear of Colette Walker19:56 The Encounter27:13 The Nightmare Unfolds29:28 A Mother's Desperation31:15 The Cycle of Violence33:09 The Aftermath of Abuse35:57 Derek's Obsession Returns#DTL #podcast #DerrickToddLee #BatonRouge #SerialKiller #unspeakable #Serial #stfrancisville #ColetteWalker

Our main feature is Frankenstein. We're also reviewing Predator: Badlands, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Deathstalker (2025), Killing Faith, Caveat, and Peeping Tom.
Frankenstein Created Woman (1967), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969), Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974) Continuing our quest to get through the rest of Hammer's Frankenstein films which starred Peter Cushing, we cover the last three titles that Hammer made. Cushing loved to play this character, and he's done it like no one ever had, or ever has. Along with the screenwriters, Cushing made this character his own, and really made him the real monster in this series. While these films might be well covered by others, sometimes we forget just how good some of these are, as well as what we might be missing the first time or two that we watched it. And as we've mentioned many times before, watching them in sequence in a relatively short time, more things can come to light. Films mention in this episode: Brides of Dracula (1960), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Curse of the Werewolf (1961), The Evil of Frankenstein (1964), The Exorcist (1973), Frankenstein Created Woman (1967), Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969), Horror of Dracula (1958), Horror of Frankenstein (1970), Kiss of the Vampire (1966), The Mummy (1959), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Peeping Tom (1960), Psycho (1960), Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), Rosemary's Baby (1968)

The definitive, in-depth look inside Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window—the all-time classic of voyeurism, paranoia, and murder that became one of Hollywood's greatest achievements and turned generations of viewers into “a race of Peeping Toms.” A must-read for film buffs, Hitchock fans old and new, and fans of classic movies and Hollywood insider history.Out on September 30, 2025.Forgotten Hollywood is on Facebook and the books are on Amazon!
