Together we explore whether the film successfully balances fan service with accessibility, and why its commitment to embracing the colourful, campy spirit of the source material may be its greatest strength.Highlights Breakdown: - Faithful or Forgettable? The Character Designs - Nicholas Galitzine's performance as Prince Adam and He-Man - Jared Leto's surprising transformation into Skeletor - The Supporting Cast Nobody Expected - The Tone Question - 19 Years in Development - Box Office vs. Streaming Reality - Breaking down the post-credit scenes - Can the franchise survive despite a disappointing box office performance?Along the way, Jamie and Todd debate whether the film leans too heavily into comedy, examine the challenges facing modern blockbuster cinema in the streaming era, and discuss why Masters of the Universe may ultimately find its audience long after leaving theatres. If you've ever shouted "By the Power of Grayskull!" or you're simply curious whether this nostalgic revival deserves your attention, this episode has you covered. This week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram

The dark side rises as The Commentary Booth hosts, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey, conclude their journey through the Star Wars prequel trilogy with a deep dive into Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.Widely regarded as the strongest entry in the prequel saga, Revenge of the Sith delivers the tragic downfall of Anakin Skywalker, the rise of Darth Vader, the execution of Order 66, and the birth of the Galactic Empire. But does the film truly earn its reputation, or is it simply the best of a flawed trilogy?Jamie and Corrina break down the film's darker tone, Shakespearean tragedy, and iconic moments, including Anakin's fateful turn to the dark side, Obi-Wan's heartbreaking confrontation on Mustafar, and Palpatine's masterfully orchestrated rise to power. Along the way, they discuss whether Anakin's visions of Padmé ultimately caused the very future he was trying to prevent, the effectiveness of Order 66, General Grievous' brief but memorable role, and how the film bridges the gap to the original trilogy.Highlights Breakdown: - Why Revenge of the Sith remains the standout film of the prequel trilogy - The inevitability of Anakin Skywalker's tragic fall to the dark side - Breaking down Palpatine's galaxy-spanning manipulation and long-term strategy - The emotional impact of Order 66 and the destruction of the Jedi Order - General Grievous, his unique design, and the surprising origin of his cough - Whether the story would have worked better as a prestige television series - The pair also examine the movie's biggest weaknesses, from its lengthy runtime and uneven pacing to some questionable CGI choices that haven't aged particularly gracefully. - Is Revenge of the Sith the masterpiece many fans claim it is, or simply a satisfying conclusion to an otherwise inconsistent trilogy? Ready to take my strong hand? This week on The Commentary Booth, host Jamie Apps is joined by the horror-loving duo behind the Killer Cuts podcast — ‘The Natural' Astrid Pizarro and Bobby Munson — for an uproarious celebration of the 25th anniversary of Scary Movie 2!Released in 2001, the Wayans brothers' chaotic sequel follows four college students (including icons Cindy Campbell and Shorty) tricked into a weekend "experiment" at a haunted mansion. What ensues is a relentless parade of ghostly groping, possessed weed plants, projectile vomit, and one very memorable malformed hand. But does this rushed sequel hold up? Jamie, Astrid, and Bobby debate whether the film's sketch-comedy pacing is a feature or a bug, defend the legacy of The Exorcist parody, and cringe at the jokes that aged like milk (sorry, Ray). They also break down the film's dense web of horror references from The Haunting and Poltergeist to Hannibal, and reveal wild casting trivia involving Marlon Brando and Britney Spears.Highlights Breakdown: - Does Scary Movie 2 beat the original? (Spoiler: It's complicated) - The "Strong Hand" Debate: Why everyone quotes this iconic scene wrong. - Lost Casting: The truth about Marlon Brando, Bill Clinton, and Christina Aguilera almost appearing. - The Dated Jokes: Why the Nike commercial parody confuses international fans and why the "What's Up" bit still works. - Horror References: From The Exorcist (perfect) to Hollow Man (the cigarette scene). - Looking Ahead: 17 film references spotted in the Scary Movie 6 trailer. Finally, the trio looks ahead to the long-awaited Scary Movie 6. With material ranging from Terrifier to The Substance and Get Out, they debate what the new film needs to do to survive in 2026.This week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram

The Star Wars 50th Anniversary celebration continues on The Commentary Boothas Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey dive headfirst into one of the franchise's most divisive chapters, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.Set 10 years after The Phantom Menace, the galaxy is on the brink of civil war. Anakin Skywalker is no longer the bright-eyed child destined for greatness, he's reckless, emotional, and already showing signs of the darkness to come. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi uncovers a mysterious clone army, Count Dooku begins pulling strings behind the scenes, and Padmé Amidala somehow ends up trapped in one of cinema's most awkward romances.Jamie and Corrina hold nothing back as they dig into why Attack of the Clones is widely considered the low point of the Skywalker Saga — from the notoriously painful script (locked in just three days before cameras rolled), to the all-CGI arena battle that left its own cast looking confused, to Anakin's legendary sand monologue that somehow became one of Star Wars' most iconic, even if unintentionally hilarious, moments. But it's not all criticism. The duo also celebrate what actually works: the subtle visual storytelling genius of clone troopers always moving right-to-left on screen, the sheer joy of Samuel L. Jackson demanding a purple lightsaber and getting it, Christopher Lee's undeniable gravitas as Count Dooku, the first glimpse of the Death Star blueprints, and a sly Jango Fett head-bang Easter egg that Disney has since made even better.Highlights Breakdown: - Why Attack of the Clones remains the most controversial Star Wars prequel - Breaking down the awkward Anakin and Padmé romance - The political themes and rise of Palpatine's power - Samuel L. Jackson demanding a purple lightsaber - The evolution of CGI and why parts of the film haven't aged well - Yoda's first lightsaber battle and “flippy-do” combat - Behind-the-scenes trivia about the rushed screenplay and production - Whether you're a die-hard Star Wars fan, a casual viewer revisiting the prequels, or someone who just needs to hear two people validate your feelings about this film — this is the episode for you.
What happens when a global pandemic triggers a fertility crisis, and the world stops having children? This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey dive into The Run, the gripping new Australian dystopian sci-fi thriller written and directed by Stephen De Villiers. Set in a hauntingly familiar post-COVID landscape of sealed-off towns and germ paranoia, the film follows Mac (Callan Mulvey), an aging smuggler past his prime, who is forced to protect a runaway teenager, Aliah (Charlotte Maggi), and her infant. As Jamie and Corrina break down the film's tense, low-key violence and powerful character drama, they draw direct comparisons to The Last of Us and The Road.Plus, stick around for an exclusive interview with writer/director Stephen De Villiers. He reveals why the budget forced a complete rewrite of the ending, how the COVID lockdowns reshaped the script, and the creepy story behind using the Australian classic ‘Come Said the Boy' as an unsettling anthem.Highlights Breakdown: - The Last of Us, Mad Max & The Road comparisons - Pandemic parallels, lockdowns & fertility crisis themes - Exclusive interview with writer/director Stephen De Villiers - Influences from The Last of Us and Logan - Why violence is mostly implied, not graphic - Breaking down the film's ambiguous ending - Character tension, survival themes & standout momentsIf you love Australian cinema, dystopian thrillers, sci-fi world-building, or post-apocalyptic survival stories, this is an episode you won't want to miss. The Run is available to rent or buy on digital platforms from June 17This week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram
Celebrate 50 years of horror history as Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey revisit Brian De Palma's Carrie (1976) on this week's episode of The Commentary Booth. Few horror films have left a cultural mark quite like Carrie. Adapted from Stephen King's first published novel and released just two years later, the film transformed a chilling coming-of-age story into one of cinema's most unforgettable nightmares. From the infamous prom bloodbath to Sissy Spacek's haunting performance as Carrie White, this episode unpacks why the film still resonates half a century later.Jamie and Corrina dive into the film's lasting legacy as both a horror classic and a brutally honest reflection of bullying, isolation, religious extremism, and teenage trauma. They discuss how the film holds up 50 years on, the surprisingly bold filmmaking choices of the 1970s, and the moments that still feel unsettlingly relevant in 2026.Highlights Breakdown: - Why Carrie (1976) remains one of the greatest Stephen King adaptations ever made - The film's disturbing portrayal of bullying, isolation, and religious abuse - Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie's Oscar-nominated performances - The legacy of the iconic prom scene and shocking ending - How Carrie compares to later remakes and sequels - 1970s filmmaking choices that would never happen todayThe pair also break down the performances from Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, and a young John Travolta, while exploring behind-the-scenes trivia, practical effects mishaps, Stephen King adaptation history, and whether any remake has ever come close to matching the original. If you've ever wondered why Carrie remains one of the most iconic horror films of all time, this episode is for you.

Well, this is a week we had to do something like this. We start by talking about the fake stabbing of THE ATROCITY KRULE and how it culminated in him being booted from all reputable indies during WrestleMania week after he cost everyone the Berwyn Eagles Club as a venue. Then we move on to WrestleMania week and this may have been a huge mistake! David keeps having to mute to cough as the show gets way too long! Kris loves him some Double Double E! Adam Weitsman: Scrap Metal King of Owego, New York is discussed in detail, as are the WWE talent security issues, among other things, including Joey Janela getting his flowers and Nick Gage's amazing weekend. We definitely shouldn't have gone this long yet, so...enjoy?To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. Becoming a Between the Sheets Patron will also get you exclusive access to not only the monthly themed episode of Between the Sheets, but also access to our new mailbag segment, a Patron-only chat room on Slack, and anything else we do outside of the main shows! If you're looking for the best deal on a VPN service—short for Virtual Private Network, it helps you get around regional restrictions as well as browse the internet more securely—then Private Internet Access is what you've been looking for. What happens when a movie podcast reviews a horror film about a podcaster? Welcome to the meta nightmare. This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey dive into Undertone, the Canadian supernatural horror film written and directed by Ian Tuason in his feature directorial debut. What they find is far more disturbing than your average haunting movie. On paper, it's about a paranormal podcaster receiving a series of disturbing audio recordings. But the deeper they go, the less it feels like a mystery, and more like a slow, suffocating descent into grief, guilt, and something… not entirely explainable.Jamie and Corrina examine why this film lives and dies by its sound design, and why you absolutely need headphones or a cinema-grade surround system to experience it the way Toussaint intended. For the review, Jamie watched Undertone with high-end audio, Corrina didn't, and that contrast shapes a surprisingly different viewing experience.During the episode, we break down the film's masterful use of negative space and camera work that subverts every horror trope you think you know, the career-defining performance from Nina Kiri reacting to nothing but recorded voices and whispers, and the genuinely haunting concept of a Mesopotamian fertility and miscarriage entity that makes the film infinitely more sinister. Then there's the emotional core. Beneath the supernatural elements, Undertone is dealing with caregiving, terminal illness, and the kind of prolonged grief that doesn't really have a clean ending. It's messy. Complicated. And, confronting.Highlights Breakdown: - The sound-first experience - Budget vs Box Office Result: $500K to $20M - Nina Kiri's one-woman show - The Abyzou mythology - Grief is the real horrorBy the time the credits roll, the conversation shifts to interpretation. What actually happened? Was it possession, psychological breakdown, or something in between? The film doesn't hand you answers, which might be why it sticks. If you're into psychological horror that trades jump scares for atmosphere and leaves you thinking long after it ends, this one's worth the listen.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… the hype was real. Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey strap into their pods and blast back to 1999 as The Commentary Booth revisits Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, timed perfectly ahead of the Skywalker Saga's landmark 50th anniversary and coinciding with the premiere of Maul: Shadow Lord on Disney+Two Jedi escape a hostile Trade Federation blockade, stumble upon a desert slave boy with off-the-charts midichlorians, and unknowingly set in motion the fall of the Republic — all while the galaxy's most intimidating silent villain finally steps out of the shadows. Does this prequel hold up over two decades later? Jamie and Corrina leave no question unanswered, from Darth Maul's criminally short screen time to why the film's CGI-heavy sets feel more like a sterile showreel than a lived-in galaxy.Highlights Breakdown: - The clash between practical effects and early CGI, and why it still feels “off” - Darth Maul's legacy, despite barely being in the film - The midichlorian debate and how it reshaped the Force mythology - Pod racing, politics, and pacing, what holds up and what drags - The Jar Jar Binks problem, and why he still sparks debatePlus: an exclusive interview with the creative team behind Maul: Shadow Lord, now streaming on Disney+, as they discuss the show's art style, dark themes, and what they hope Star Wars fans take away from Maul's long-overdue spotlight.Trivia, behind-the-scenes facts, a razor-turned-communicator prop secret, and a box office number that will make your jaw drop — Jamie and Corrina cover it all. Ultimately, it's better than you remember, but the franchise is about to get a whole lot worse. Buckle up for Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones next month.

Here's the text update we posted on Patreon eartlier; we get more detailed on the audio. (Where we also congratulate Steve Corino on his recent nuptials.) Plus we get into more details on how soon the banked Patreon show will come out, as well as Center Stage Chronicles among other things. But just listen to the audio to get the full update.First off: Apologies for forgetting to post this here previously. But based on the numbers, it looks like you guys mostly saw the social media updates, and we greatly appreciate the continued support, especially under the circumstances.David's been dealing with some medical issues (of the constant conflicting diagnoses kind, and we'll leave it at that for now), but the hope is that we can get back to at least the normal Patreon schedule in the next week or so. (We have Lawler/Kat part 2 already recorded from before everything went haywire, to boot.) Main show is still a little shakier, but Kris and I are gonna record a quick audio update to post on the main feed shortly. We may ease back in with a modified format, but once we're back at full power, all queued Patreon picks will be up first. Nobody's going to have to wait a year for the week to come back around or anything like that. And then we'll move back to the regular schedule once we get those done.Again, all of the well wishes and continued support are greatly appreciated. It means a lot. At least on here, you can expect more content at the normal schedule in a matter of days at the most. Appreciate all of you. We may not have the numbers of a current wrestling-focused podcast like The Flagship or a bigger nostalgia show like Lapsed Fan, but you've still pushed us to a level where we routinely get offered early access to new creator features and things like that are reserved for top creators. So we're doing something right, it seems, and at least behind this paywall, things are about to get back to normal. To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey swap the popcorn for bear spray as they dive into Grizzly Night, the 2026 survival thriller from debut director Burke Doeren. Thanks to the teams at Hold Fast Public Relations and Eagle Entertainment, the duo got an early look at this gripping creature feature, available now on DVD and VOD in Australia. But don't let the "creature feature" label fool you. Grizzly Night is less Cocaine Bear and more sobering docudrama — and that's exactly what caught Jamie and Corrina off guard.Rooted in the chilling true story of the 1967 ‘Night of the Grizzlies', the film recreates two fatal grizzly bear attacks that occurred on the very same night, just miles apart, inside Glacier National Park. It's a premise so wild that, as Jamie puts it, "if this were written as a totally made-up story, you'd be like — that's outrageous." And yet, it happened. Fact truly is stranger than fiction.Jamie and Corrina unpack the film's unusual tone, its grounded approach to storytelling, and the way it reframes the idea of who, or what, is really to blame. There's talk of low-budget limitations, surprisingly effective practical and CGI work, and a few moments that don't quite land, but also a genuine appreciation for the film's message around conservation and human responsibility.Highlights Breakdown: - Breaking down the true events behind the 1967 “Night of the Grizzlies” and how the film adapts them. - Why Grizzly Night leans more into docudrama than horror, and whether that works. - The clever filmmaking tricks that sell the tension without showing full-on attacks. - Exploring the film's core message, shifting blame from animals to human behaviour. It's not quite horror. Not fully drama either. Somewhere in between, maybe a little messy, but worth talking about.Corrina calls it her Bambi moment. Jamie calls it unexpectedly heartbreaking. Both agree: for a low-budget, straight-to-VOD release, Grizzly Night lands a message that is clear, important, and worth your time.

In this week's episode of The Commentary Booth, hosts Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey dig up the fossilised remains of the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros movie. Was it a misunderstood cult classic or a total game-over? Spoiler alert: it's the latter. What unfolds is less a nostalgic celebration and more a forensic breakdown of one of the most baffling video game adaptations ever made. From its bizarre dystopian tone to its almost unrecognisable take on beloved characters, this episode explores how a globally adored franchise somehow turned into a cyberpunk fever dream. And not in a good way.Jamie and Corrina unpack everything: the behind-the-scenes chaos, constant script rewrites, and performances that feel like even the cast knew something was off. Still, buried beneath the mess are flickers of creativity, including surprisingly strong production design and visual effects that arguably deserved a better film.Highlights Breakdown:Why Super Mario Bros (1993) feels nothing like a Mario storyThe chaotic production, constant rewrites, and cast frustrationSurprising positives, from set design to visual effectsHow this film shaped the future of video game adaptationsComparing the 1993 disaster to modern Mario successWith the Super Mario Galaxy Movie on the horizon, this is the ultimate re-watch to appreciate how far video game adaptations have come. From the iconic (but misplaced) set designs built in an abandoned cement factory to the “de-evolution” guns that were actually repainted Duck Hunt blasters, no pipe is left unturned.
This week on The Commentary Booth, we're playing hide and seek with the Le Domas family!Host Jamie Apps is joined by Corrina Mabey for her first time watching 2019 horror-comedy sensation Ready or Not, and she's wondering why she slept on this chaotic masterpiece for so long.First-time viewer Corrina brings fresh eyes to Samara Weaving's iconic performance as Grace, the bride who discovers that marrying into wealth comes with deadly consequences. There's a lot to unpack here. The film walks a strange line between horror and comedy, sometimes leaning harder into one than the other, and that tension becomes part of the appeal. It's messy, a bit absurd at times, but also surprisingly sharp when it wants to be. And then there's the family, who feel just grounded enough to be believable, until they really, really aren't.Highlights Breakdown:A fresh take on horror-comedy that still feels unpredictableSamara Weaving's performance as a modern “final girl” with biteThe chaotic family dynamic that drives both tension and humourMemorable kills, accidental or otherwise, that shift the tone fastThe ending is equal parts absurd, satisfying, and slightly unsettlingThe conversation drifts through standout moments, unexpected laughs, and the kind of brutal chaos that somehow still feels fun. There's also a bit of debate about what actually counts as horror these days, and whether this film even fits neatly into the genre at all. With Ready or Not 2: Here I Come on the horizon, this revisit feels less like nostalgia and more like preparation. Twenty-five years ago, a jet engine fell from the sky and changed cinema forever. Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey reunite in The Commentary Booth to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Donnie Darko — Richard Kelly's mind-bending, genre-defying debut that launched Jake Gyllenhaal into stardom and left audiences questioning reality, time, and the nature of a very unsettling rabbit. In this special flashback episode, Jamie brings a fresh set of eyes to the film for the very first time, while Corrina (a devoted annual rewatcher) guides him through the labyrinthine twists, time loops, and philosophical rabbit holes that have made Donnie Darko a genuine cult classic. Expect spirited debate, genuine confusion, and more than a few moments of "wait, WHAT?"They dive deep into what makes this film so endlessly rewatchable: its rich thematic layers spanning mental health, teenage alienation, predestination, nihilism, and faith; its deceptively stacked early-2000s cast featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, Seth Rogen, and Noah Wyle; and the remarkable behind-the-scenes story of how Drew Barrymore's Flower Films rescued the movie from obscurity for just $4.5 million. The pair unpack the film's troubled theatrical release, opening just weeks after 9/11, with all plane-crash marketing pulled at the last minute, and how a disastrous box office run ultimately couldn't stop Donnie Darko from finding its audience on DVD and becoming one of the most beloved cult films of its generation.Highlights Breakdown:Why Donnie Darko is "ADHD, the film" and requires multiple viewingsThe uncomfortable therapist who treats Donnie as a science experimentHow Drew Barrymore saved the movie from going straight to cableThe real-world tragedy that derailed the original marketing campaignFrank the rabbit, time travel theories, and that unforgettable endingIs Donnie Darko a story about mental illness, destiny, alternate timelines, or all of the above? Honestly, it might be a little bit of everything. One thing is certain, though. Twenty-five years on, we're still trying to figure it out.So, whether you're a longtime fan or a curious first-timer, this flashback episode will send you down a rabbit hole.

In the latest instalment of The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey continue their epic 50th Anniversary Star Wars rewatch with the epic conclusion to the original trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi.Fresh off the heels of The Empire Strikes Back's jaw-dropping revelation, our favourite rebels are back to take down the Empire once and for all.But this isn't just any rewatch. Corrina has brought her beloved Wicket backpack along for the ride, and she's ready to die on the hill that Return of the Jedi is the best Star Wars movie ever made. (Jamie strongly disagrees. He's entitled to be wrong.)In this action-packed episode, the duo dives deep into Jabba's palace (and its surprisingly moist inhabitants), the guerrilla warfare tactics of everyone's favourite space bears, and the emotional gut-punch of Vader's redemption arc. They also tackle the elephant in the room: those controversial special edition changes that added CGI singers, a very different Force ghost, and enough digital fluff to make purists weep. From Steadicam speeder bike trivia to David Lynch almost directing this thing, Jamie and Corrina leave no stone unturned. Plus, Corrina makes a compelling case for why Ewoks are actual geniuses, not just adorable fluffballs.Highlights Breakdown:

They planned for 30 minutes. They fought for 24 hours. This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey head back into the dust, chaos and moral grey zones of Black Hawk Down. Join us as we commemorate the film's 25th anniversary with a deep dive into one of the most visceral, unflinching war films ever committed to screen.Based on the true events of October 1993, when 160 elite U.S. soldiers found themselves trapped in a deadly firefight in Mogadishu, this film remains a masterclass in tension, practical effects, and authentic storytelling. In this episode, Jamie and Corrina revisit Ridley Scott's relentless war epic, not to mythologise it, but to sit with it. The noise, the panic, the mistakes, the human cost.Highlights Breakdown: - Why Black Hawk Down still feels modern despite being 25 years old - The surprisingly stacked cast and the careers it quietly launched - Practical effects, real training, and why the violence feels so confronting - The film's rejection of clean hero narratives and patriotic gloss - How the Battle of Mogadishu reshaped modern military thinkingWhat starts as a discussion about a stacked cast quickly turns into something heavier. Watching it now, the film feels less like a traditional war movie and more like a survival document, raw, exhausting, and deliberately uncomfortable. Jamie and Corrina unpack why the film still holds up visually, how its practical effects amplify the brutality, and why its refusal to offer easy heroes might be its most lasting strength. They also dig into the real-world context behind the Battle of Mogadishu, the controversial mission planning, and the moments where Ridley Scott chose emotional truth over strict historical accuracy. It's a conversation that drifts between film craft, historical reflection, and that strange feeling of realising a movie you saw years ago hits very differently now. This isn't nostalgia. It's a re-evaluation. And it hits hard.

What does one of wrestling's most intimidating forces have in common with one of cinema's coldest villains? In this episode of The Commentary Booth: Live Via Satellite, Jamie Apps is joined by former Metroplex Champion ‘Worldbreaker' Brick Savage, dialling in from Texas as he prepares for the Metroplex Wrestling Texas Rumble on February 7. The conversation spirals from the brutal deserts of No Country For Old Men into the psychology of modern pro wrestling, and it gets intense fast.Brick breaks down why the Coen Brothers' neo-Western classic has stuck with him for years, from Anton Chigurh's terrifying calm to the film's obsession with fate, preparation, and consequences. He draws clear parallels between Javier Bardem's methodical villain and his own in-ring philosophy, staying three steps ahead, never rushing, and letting inevitability do the damage.Highlights Breakdown:Why No Country For Old Men feels like a horror film without being oneAnton Chigurh as the blueprint for a great wrestling villainProactive vs reactive characters, in film and in the ringBuilding moments, not just matchesHow Texas, violence, and morality shape Brick Savage's personaWhat fans should expect from Brick at the Metroplex Texas RumbleBrick's advice on digging deep within to create an authentic and intimidating characterAthena's Influence: How the MPX owner and wrestling star is elevating the entire promotionAlong the way, the pair unpack proactive versus reactive storytelling, why violence in film can be honest rather than gratuitous, and how wrestling characters, like movie villains, live or die by the smallest details. With the Texas Rumble looming, Brick also opens up about sacrifice, intimidation, and why being a force of nature still scares people in 2026.It's part film analysis, part wrestling masterclass, and quietly one of the most revealing conversations Brick Savage has had on record.FOLLOW BRICK SAVAGE ON SOCIAL MEDIA:- Instagram- X/Twitter- Facebook- YouTubeThis week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram
Step into the ring where magic meets mayhem! In this captivating episode of The Commentary Booth: Live Via Satellite, host Jamie Apps sits down with five-time Metroplex Wrestling champion 'Shady' JD Griffey to explore how Christopher Nolan's masterpiece The Prestige mirrors the sacrifices, obsessions, and rivalries that define professional wrestling. As JD prepares for the chaotic Metroplex Wrestling Texas Rumble on February 7, he reveals how the film's themes of obsession, sacrifice, and bitter rivalry might make it one of the most unintentionally honest films ever made about professional wrestling.Discover how the magician's code is eerily similar to wrestling's kayfabe, and why the greatest performance is the one the audience never fully sees. This is more than a film review; it's a raw look at the cost of devotion and the art of deception in the world of sports entertainment. The conversation moves between film analysis and lived experience. The toll of kayfabe. The addiction to reactions. The fine line between dedication and self-destruction. There's admiration here, but also discomfort. Wrestling, much like Nolan's film, doesn't flinch from the consequences of obsession, it just hides them better.Highlights Breakdown: - The Three Acts of Wrestling: How JD breaks down matches using the film's pledge, turn, and prestige structure - Living Two Incomplete Lives: The personal cost of maintaining kayfabe and character in the modern wrestling era - Obsession & Sacrifice: Why the best performers give 100% even when audiences only perceive 30-40% - The Matthew Palmer Rivalry: How JD's greatest opponent became someone who knew him better than family - Secrets of the Craft: JD's philosophy on protecting wrestling's magic in the age of social media and shows like WWE's Unreal - Texas Rumble Intentions: His vengeful plans for the February 7 Metroplex Wrestling Texas RumbleTune in for a conversation that pulls no punches, blending film analysis with the gritty reality of the wrestling business. It's a testament to the idea that to be the best, you must be willing to disappear and come back, for your art.FOLLOW JD GRIFFEY ON SOCIAL MEDIA:- Instagram- X/TwitterThis week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram

Pro wrestling has always lived somewhere between sport, theatre, and obsession. In this Live Via Satellite episode of The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps sits down with writer and filmmaker Taleena Lee to explore that space, and the deeply personal journey behind her wrestling-themed anthology series, Australian Wrestling Story. What begins as a conversation about discovering wrestling in the most unexpected way slowly opens into something more intimate. Taleena traces her path from teenage fandom, through film school during COVID, to writing a six-part horror-infused TV series designed by a wrestling fan, for wrestling fans. Along the way, she speaks candidly about grief, creativity, and the strange comfort wrestling can offer when life gets heavy.Highlights Breakdown:How Taleena discovered wrestling through a storyline she initially hatedThe personal loss that shaped her connection to wrestling and storytellingTurning a film-school idea into a horror-infused wrestling anthologyWhy Australian Wrestling Story is being built for fans firstPaying tribute to the Australian wrestling scene and its performersThe challenges of creating independently, from writing to social mediaDrawing inspiration from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, American Horror Story, Yellowjackets, and the Australian independent wrestling scene, Australian Wrestling Story blends split timelines, psychological horror, and wrestling mythology into something that feels familiar but also unsettling in the best way. Taleena describes the show as “Dark Side of the Ring meets American Horror Story”, and once you hear her unpack it, that comparison sticks.Jamie and Taleena also dig into the realities of independent creation, wearing too many creative hats, building a grassroots audience online, and why paying respect to the Australian wrestling community sits at the heart of the project. It's a thoughtful, occasionally funny, sometimes emotional conversation about storytelling, fandom, and why wrestling continues to resonate far beyond the ring.FOLLOW TALEENA ON SOCIAL MEDIA:- Instagram- TikTokThis week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram

Later than we intended thanks to the flu, here's what was supposed to be stopgap content over the holidays. Make sure to check out the latest Patreon shows, and be on the lookout for the return of the weekly show this Monday. Now, for the original show descriptions:—Part 1:It's Thanksgiving, and you know what that means: A new Patreon deep dive, this time looking at the first ridiculous startup promotion of the post-WCW era, John Collins' Main Event Championship Wrestling. And since he was right in the thick of things, we're joined by our dear from Beau James (@kingofkingsport) throughout this first part (of two, with another episode coming in December). Topics include the initial buzz that Beau heard before the news of the startup broke publicly, Collins paying his guys to appear at shows promoted by Beau and others that he was making zero dollars from, various ridiculous interviews that Collins gave on radio shows, Bill Behrens, Mike Samples, and others publicly warning everyone about Collins' sketchiness, the MECW “TV taping” at the ECW Arena being made a free show at the last minute, Collins doing a TV pilot taping there in the first place after already having shot a separate pilot, Terry Taylor publicly flirting with a job in MECW, all of the drama with Buff Bagwell refusing to do a job for then-NWA World Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino, and much more.Like we keep saying: John Collins is like putting Paul Heyman/ECW, Herb Abrams/the UWF, and Olu Olalyemi/Joe Pedicino/the GWF in a blender. You do NOT want to miss this show. Happy Thanksgiving!Part 2:It's that time of the month, and you know what that means: The second anf final part of our deep dive into the utter disaster that was Main Event Championship Wrestling, John Collins' post-WCW/ECW startup. Topics include everything going to hell after the big "TV taping" at the former ECW Arena, flights to Evansville being cancelled and Collins blaming Paul Heyman when he just hadn't paid for them, an amazing (and lengthy!) lesson in promoting towns from Beau, Collins self-destructing on a conference call with Tod Gordon, Bob Ryder, and Dave Scherer, wrestlers showing up at Collins' home to demand their money, the simultaneous rise of fellow nebulous startups Super Fed and WrestleXpress, Collins harassing Crimson Mask from the Wrestling Classics Message Board on AOL Instant Messenger, Collins "having a heart attack" more than once, MECW's backer being under court order not to spend money since before MECW was even announced, Collins working as a heel manager on shows syndicated by Bill Behrens while Bill's own promotion has a heel doing a Collins parody gimmick, Terry Taylor's "Torch Talk" interview, Collins' SECOND promotion, the Torch's year-end quiz, Collins going to federal prison thanks to MECW, and MUCH more. This is an amazing show and we hope you enjoy it!Timestamps:0:00:00 Prologue & July 20011:55:15 Early August 20013:14:08 Late August 2001 (and Beau's lesson in local promotion)5:11:35 September 20016:19:55 October 2001 and beyondTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
