An interesting movie mix for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director DUNCAN SKILES and his new film NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, and director LORCAN FINNEGAN and his latest THE SURFER. As different as night and day, both films showcase storytelling creativity and some incredible – and indelible – performances, most notably from Nic Cage in THE SURFER. First up, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH. Directed by DUNCAN SKILES, who you may know best for directing THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH rises and falls on the compelling mystery plot and the performances by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ed and Jack Quaid as Simon. As you will hear from Duncan in this pre-recorded exclusive interview, he was drawn to writer Sean Farley's script for its unique and heartwarming dynamic between Ed and Simon. Duncan found it sweet, bittersweet, and not overly sentimental. The script had a mix of elements – thrills, mystery, and comedy – which appealed to him, and which he brings to life with a naturalistic look and feel thanks to cinematographer Luke McCoubrey. After THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, Duncan was looking for something lighter, and this script was an easy read where he found himself rooting for the characters and wanting to spend time with them. Then we switch gears and hit the western coast of Australia with the sun and the surf with director LORCAN FINNEGAN and THE SURFER with a total mind fuck, batshit brilliant performance by Nic Cage. Needless to say, I love this movie! A psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man identified as "The Surfer" – played by Cage – returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, played by Finn Little of "Yellowstone" fame. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals led by Scally – maniacally played by Julian McMahon – whose mantra is "don't live here, don't surf here." Humiliated and angry, "The Surfer" is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point. Take a listen as Lorcan breaks down THE SURFER from Cage to story to casting to cinematography to editing to sound to score, and even the appearance of native snakes and a kookabura. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Happy Halloween! Duncan Skiles, director of the chilling The Clovehitch Killer and the forthcoming comedy thriller Neighborhood Watch, went trick or treating into the oubliette and brought back a Peeping Tom. This proto-slasher from Michael Powell, one half of the famous British duo Powell and Pressburger, emerged in the same year as Hitchcock's Psycho and explores similar territory: a handsome, unassuming man with a homicidal compulsion spurred by parental abuse. But while one film was an instant box office sensation that became a landmark in horror history, the other was savaged by scandalised critics and destroyed its director's career. Rescued from obscurity over a decade later by Martin Scorsese, Peeping Tom has become an influential cult favourite. But does it deserve to escape the oubliette with a fulsome sack of calorific treats? Or should it be thrown back with some candy corn and a rotten apple? Find out! More serial killers!! This week we watched two films about secret serial killers discovered by their families: Trap and The Clovehitch Killer Trap (2024) - Directed by M. Night Shyamalan A seemingly ordinary man takes his daughter to a concert, unaware that a massive police operation is underway to capture a notorious serial killer. As the night unfolds, the man finds himself caught in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with the authorities. The Clovehitch Killer (2018) - Directed by Duncan Skiles A seemingly perfect family is shattered when evidence linking their father to a notorious serial killer surfaces. As the son investigates the disturbing truth, he must confront the possibility that the man he admires is a monster. Spoilers start around 5:30

WoHos! The theme this time is "Loss of Innocence". We reviewed THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER from the US & THE INNOCENTS from Norway. We enjoyed the exploration of the distance that grows between a child and parent during adolescence in THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER. Everyone can relate to that feeling, but thankfully only a few will ever know the horrifying reality our protag Tyler feels in THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER.In THE INNOCENTS the inherent powerlessness is what is examined in a world where children suddenly discover they have spernatural powers. CW: Cat harm and cat death--also kid harm and kid death--also parent harm and parent death. Also surprise spoiler for THE DEN at We had a good discussion about some missteps the directors take, the use and misuse of does the dog die website, the depiction of a character with nonverbal autism and whether or not this depiction was problematic, Mac, Quinn, and I have all been sick this season. It's Q's turn currently, but when she is better, we will do a Quinnisode on maybe my all-time favorite movie? FARGO.Next on the main show we will be looking at movies involving mental illness with JACOB'S LADDER from the US & THE BABADOOK from Australia. If you are enjoying the show, please get in touch and tell all your friends all about us.Stay healthy, our WoHos!And remember: We love you and DON'T go into the basement!! WoHos!This week, Rob and Ben from The Every Movie EVER! podcast joined us to discuss a movie that Means the World of Horror™ to them: MAY from 2002.Topics discussed: Learning you are autistic and having it be no surprise to family members, podcasting as a mental health check-in, serendipity in finding movies, Netflix' old model for DVD through-the-mail service, watching horror at an inappropriately young age, the manic pixie dreamgirl/boy trope, surrealism and fantasy in film and how nice it is not to know what genre of film we are in.Disclaimers for spoilers and adult language.Mille grazie (I can be pretentious, too!) to Ben & Rob, who have a a delightful podcast which you should all check out. You should all alsoRemember we love you and DON'T go into the basement!!PS. I think I really misunderstood what Rob was saying that Blank was Frank from DONNIE DARKO. Also, I think Rob conflated THE CREEPING FLESH with TERROR TRAIN? But in the end, I think we were mostly sympatico through most of this pod, so what's a little muddle among friends?PPS. I put a video version of the podcast up on our YouTube Channel. #163 Triangle of Sadness, Watcher, The Bourne Identity Halloween winds down with a hefty dose of horror flicks in Recent Discoveries and our review of a thriller. Watcher is about the unnerving feeling of being watched and becoming a watcher yourself as an American tourist; as a serial killer is on the loose, beheading women. Triangle of Sadness is a tearing down of the social order and class structure set on a yacht first, then on an island. Does power always corrupt? The Bourne Identity celebrates its 20th anniversary as a stellar and unique action film with a cool ‘amnesia' premise. Our eternal friends the Dom Deluise Patreon Pals are in on the mysterious fun with us this week as we review three of their (semi-)mystery movie picks! Up first! It's Louis Malle's 1958 debut Elevator to the Gallows, a strikingly photographed French film noir with a Miles Davis soundtrack. Picked by Listener Luke! Next up! We double dip on the French tip with another franco-feature, the sparse but bloody Revenge (from 2017)! It's more or less what you've seen from prior rape/revenge flicks, but with vastly more shots of butts and open wounds on Frenchmen's feet. Thanks to Aaron for picking it! Finally! Of course, it's 2018's The Clovehitch Killer, because we already reviewed The Office Killer, The Killer Tomatoes/Klowns/Bimbos/Workouts/Sharks, The Driller Killer, The Thrill Killers, Honeymoon Killers, and Fearless Vampire Killers - and didn't want ol' Clovehitch to feel left out. Stars Dylan McDermott. Picked by Travis. All this plus the Garfield poop update, Parker & Sam: A Love Story, casting for the next Dorito's packaging, Benedict Cumberbatch? I hardly knew her batch, Kevin's minority opinion corner, Kevin's off-mic snickerdoos, Parker's moving furniture, Sean's stuck in a fuzzy Skype session, checking your bagel qualifications, Miles on the track, donut shop payphones, James "King" Hong, nerd news and even more! Duncan Skiles, director of The Clovehitch Killer, returns for our special festive episode, in which we review a yuletide tale of a plucky kid who uses booby traps to repel a home invasion. No – not that one! It's the French horror/thriller Deadly Games (1989) – also known as 3615 code Père Noël and about a dozen other titles. It was released a year before Home Alone and is a lot darker. As in 'irreparable child trauma' darker. But bizarrely, it also features a cute grandpa and a gauzy montage set to an original Bonnie Tyler Christmas song. But is it a delightful, previously unwrapped Christmas gift or is it a bag of coal? A completely “under the radar” movie entitled THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND appeared on Netflix on March 11, 2021. The film plays out early as an environmental thriller but quickly turns into something much more. Quickly buried among Netflix's huge catalog, co-host Eric found it and watched it “on the blind.” When fish begin to wash ashore upon the beaches of Rhode Island's Block Island, Audrey (Michaela McManus) is sent by the EPA to check out the circumstances. Originally an islander, she stays with her father Tom (Neville Archambault) and brother Harry (Chris Sheffield). Soon her father disappears at sea, and Harry begins to do his own investigation that may show a connection between his father's disappearance and the animal deaths. The movie was co-written and directed by brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus. After a run at festivals (including Fantasia), the movie quickly received quality reviews from numerous outlets. THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND was even noticed by such outlets as the Austin Chronicle. Dark Discussions takes a look at this interesting film and are joined by actor https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0501738/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 (Dan Lench) to get further perspective. Christopher Ford's rise to becoming a highly regarded Hollywood screenwriter is a story within itself. Back in 2010, he was discovered by Eli Roth when Ford along with director Jon Watts (SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING) did a short film as a yarn to get the attention of the famous director. After deciding to produce a film based off the short, the movie CLOWN (2014) was made. That movie jump started the careers of both Watts and Ford. And by 2018, a hidden gem of a film (written by Ford) appeared called THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER. Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is the perfect high school student. He's in the scouts, is an outstanding member of his church, and has a loving family. One day when he discovers an S&M picture in the family truck, he begins to wonder if his dad is more than the great father that he had thought. Working with his friend Kassi (Madisen Beaty) they begin to travel down a “rabbit hole” that may turn their life and their town upside down. The movie, directed by Duncan Skiles, stars Dylan McDermott in the pivotal role of Tyler's father. With excellent acting, including Samantha Mathis as Tyler's mother, the movie feeds doubts into the thoughts of a young man about his ideal life. What follows is the slow fall of what otherwise was a perfect family. Dark Discussions takes a look at this very interesting film and gives their thoughts.

Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! This week on the show we discuss a friendly neighbourhood superhero in, Spider-Man: Far From Home. Reeling from the events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) must deal with the loss of Iron Man as well as deal with an ‘Avengers level threat' in the form of strange elemental beings. That, coupled with an awkward romance with MJ (Zendaya) makes things a little tough for the webslinger. Have a listen to the show to find out what we thought. We also review Ari Aster's, Midsommar. A group of friends travel to Sweden to join in on what promises to be a fun celebration. This being an Ari Aster film though, things don't go as expected for the friends. Yikes! There's also a look at Danny Boyle's new film, Yesterday. A film about a singer/songwriter who is the only one in the world who remembers the songs of The Beatles after an accident. What does he do? Have a listen to the show to find out more :) On Anniversary Corner we take a look back at Lars Von Trier's, Anti Christ, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, The Bone Collector, Fist of Legend and The Trial of the Incredible Hulk. On Hidden Gems this week we bring you The Clovehitch Killer (2018) - a Hitchcockian thriller about a son who suspects his devout church going dad of being serial killer who may have murdered 10 local girls years before. Gripping stuff! Listen on to find out more. If that wasn't enough for you we've even thrown in movie news, new trailers to watch and what you can catch on Blu-Ray and streaming.
