American Psycho is a 2000 satirical horror film directed by Mary Harron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner. Based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, it stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a New York City investment banker who apparently leads a double life as a serial killer. Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, Justin Theroux, and Reese Witherspoon appear in supporting roles. The film blends horror and black comedy to satirize 1980s yuppie culture and consumerism, exemplified by Bateman. Director Mary Herron and her co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner did what 'American Psycho' author Bret Easton Ellis thought was impossible: made a film of his controversial, considered-unfilmable 1991. novel.  And the lens through which they espied Patrick Bateman proved exactly the right way to gain something meaningful out of what, frankly, is a pretty unreadable and repetitive novel. The astonishing lead performance from Christian Bale catapulted him to the stardom and rarified air he continues to occupy as an actor today.  And the performance is a wonder to dissect, if you'll pardon the pun. Featuring a wonderful assortment of supporting actors like Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Justin Theroux, Reese Witherspoon, Reg E. Cathey, Josh Lucas, Matt Ross, Jared Leto, Cara Seymour and Samantha Mathis, the film is one of the most essential films about NYC in the 80's.

Although this film hasn't held up that well over the years, we will give it points for trying to think outside the box with the source material. The 1993 movie "Super Mario Bros." is a live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise. The film follows Mario Mario (played by Bob Hoskins) and Luigi Mario (played by John Leguizamo), two Brooklyn plumbers who find themselves in a parallel dimension known as Dinohattan. In this alternate world, King Koopa (played by Dennis Hopper) rules with an iron fist. The brothers join forces with Princess Daisy (played by Samantha Mathis) to stop Koopa's evil plans and rescue the missing Daisy's father. The movie takes creative liberties with the source material, incorporating elements of science fiction and dystopian urban landscapes. Despite its departure from the video game's whimsical and colorful tone, "Super Mario Bros." has gained a cult following over the years, appreciated by some for its unique and eccentric take on the Mushroom Kingdom.Check out the merch:  http://shop.backinthedaypodcast.comFriends of the Show1 Man Mafia (twitch.tv/1man_mafia)Jayke The Gamer God (twitch.tv/JaykeTheGamerGod)IB Best Gaming (https://www.tiktok.com/@ibbestgaming)Intro for the shopSupport the show'Beavis and Butt-head' Cover art created by Joe Crawford

Matt's Movie Lodgecast

There was a Pet Sematary prequel that came out late last year! A prequel to the Pet Sematary (2019) remake, to be precise, which was a remake of the 1989 film based on the 1983 Stephen King book. So Bloodlines is a prequel of a remake of an adaptation that went straight to Paramount Plus. We covered the Pet Sematary remake way back in Episode 43 of the Lodgecast. Bloodlines scored a woeful 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, which sealed our fate that we had to cover it. This movie is set in 1969 and stars Jackson White as a young Jud Crandall who discovers the secrets of the cemetery. This movie stars some other heavy hitters, including Henry Thomas, David Duchovny, Samantha Mathis, and Pam Grier. The cast is rounded out by Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Natalie Alyn Lind, and Isabella Star LaBlanc. While "sometimes dead is better," we're not ruling out future installments of the Pet Sematary franchise!

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer (in her directorial debut), and co-written by Beer and Jeff Buhler. Serving as a prequel to Pet Sematary (2019), which in turn was based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Stephen King, the film stars Jackson White, Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Henry Thomas, Natalie Alyn Lind, Isabella Star LaBlanc, Samantha Mathis, Pam Grier and David Duchovny. Set in 1969, 50 years before the events of the previous film, the plot follows a young Jud Crandall as he discovers a local cemetery where the dead can live again, without imagining the horror that will affect his life. After the commercial success of Pet Sematary in 2019, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura had plans for a prequel explaining the mythology and universe of the film. In February 2021, the film was green-lit, with Buhler and di Bonaventura returning in their roles as screenwriter and producer, respectively. Beer signed on as director in May 2021 and principal photography began in August of the same year. Fox, among others.“The American President” stars Michael Douglas as President Andrew Shepherd, a widow, who falls in love with an environmental lobbyist, played by Annette Bening, while he also runs for re-election and attempts to pass major legislation. The film is both a romantic comedy, depicting the president's courtship, and a political drama, depicting the effort to win votes, dodge criticism and shore up the White House's political position. The tagline for “The American President” is “Why can't the most powerful man in the world have the one thing he wants most?”“The American President” is available for rent or purchase on Amazon and iTunes. Our next episode will on the 1995 science-fiction thriller, “Twelve Monkeys.” Connor Lynch produced this episode. In 1993, Hollywood adapted Super Mario Bros., then a hit Nintendo video game, into a live-action movie starring Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper. It was the first time a video game would make the leap to the big screen, but it certainly wouldn't be the last. In 2023, Nintendo tried it again, this time teaming with Illumination for an animated take on their most famous franchise. It took the world by storm, becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. This week, Matthew and Brian discuss the new release, and are joined by Max as we take a trip down memory lane and re-examine the 1993 attempt. It's weirder, darker and yes, gayer than you probably remember, but how do the two movies hold up? Join us as we discuss video game movies, Bob Hoskins' mustache and much more!

Book Vs. Movie: How to Make An American Quilt Whitney Otto's Debut Novel Vs the Winona Ryder MovieThe 90s were an incredible time for what became known as “Chick Lit”--or just books that featured women writers and characters. Whitney Otto's How to Make an American Quilt told the multilayered story of generations of women who are in a quilting group in Grasse, California. Our main protagonist Finn is a graduate student who is engaged to her longtime boyfriend but is experiencing cold feet. The book is a mixture of quilting instructions and the life story of several characters with the many ups and downs of their interpersonal relationships. Everything is discussed from cheating spouses, interracial dating, the ennui of motherhood, and having a parent that disapproves of your life choices. The film is a tour de force of incredible actors from Winona Ryder to Ellen Burstyn to Alfre Woodard. It's sweet, warm, and sexy. It had women behind the scenes and made four times the budget. Yet Hollywood still doesn't produce more of them. Because…show business is sexist. So, between the original story and the 1995 film-which did we prefer?
