Things change a little when comes to Christmas gift exchanges. (Age gets us all, doesn't it?) Ramona discusses her preferred gift-slash-love language. And then Matt terrifies her by regaling her with stories of surprise rodents darting out of Christmas trees. (Think the cat and the squirrel in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.) 01:23 - IntroductionWe start out today with a short round-table chat about Mom dressing Tyler. And cussing. And Gallagher.03:20 - MoviesWe move on to review some of our favorite movies–Christmas and Schwarzenegger. Dad thinks most Hallmark movies should just move on down the road. But then he goes on to talk about the one he watched with Mom. We learn that Pierce Brosnan has lost all of Dad's respect. When it comes to Christmas movies, Eddie shares that Christmas Vacation is one of his favorites. Dad hasn't seen it. He is a fan of Scrooged, though–especially Bobcat. Tyler shares a vote for Daddy's Home. Dad shares that he doesn't want to have anything to do with Elf. 10:50 - ABSI and TraumaTyler executes one of the oddest segues we've seen, but that does get us around to a conversation we wanted to have the last time Dad joined us. Dad was working on a project in Florida. Dad's team won the bid, but he believes they got it because the owners knew they could push his team around. Then came the RFIs. Then came the atrium–with fiber optic stars. Dad played multiple roles on this project, and he saw his schedule slipping and slipping because of work not done in the design stage. Long story short, he decided it was time to move on from that company and start ABSI.25:50 - Birth of BIM and our first exposure to TeklaEddie shares about the first times he was exposed to these new terms and software packages. Dad reminisces about the earliest computerized drawings he did. 30:47 - Lessons LearnedEddie airs some grievances about where the industry is compared to where it should be. It's the whole Jetsons flying-car thing. We speculate about why we haven't come further. Dad talks about critical paths and faxes and crickets chirping as he sought to drum up business. Eddie thinks it's largely obstinance and risk-aversion.The rest of this conversation will be in next week's episode. Matt had Laci watch the “beloved” “family” Christmas-present-hunt movie Jingle All the Way (1996). So… did she have a good time? Listener, she did not. But you'll have a good time hearing them commiserate about the experience for two hours. Why would a movie cast Arnold Schwarzeneggar to play a normal man? When is it inappropriate to buy a Christmas tree? And wouldn't this movie have been better if the quest for a coveted Turbo Man figure sent Howard (Schwarzeneggar) deep into the seedy Santa-sexual Christmas underbelly of Minneapolis? It's there in this movie if you look for it. This week we start off the rails. Jack Harlow, Dolly Parton and Christmas theme songs are on deck.David has a Christmas themed beer, a mix of spruce and hops that is What a Beaut from Cinderlands. The theming paid homage to the classic Christmas Vacation movie which happened to be where David drew inspiration for his song this week, said movie's theme track.Gary has some Jim Beam Black Extra Aged. That extra char, extra aging is just up his alley and was a hit. There were Pappy pours at cost on Black Friday, the downfall of some craft breweries and of course some football talk. This week we'll do a back to back re-air of our 2019 and 2022 reviews of "A Christmas Story (1983)" and "A Christmas Story Christmas (2022)". Corndog Loves the original for the Christmas Americana. Kibbe loved the sequel too and had JUST gone to the A Christmas Story House when this was recorded. Next week would like YOU to choose what we review this year! A few suggestions are in the show....but come up with some fun ones if you can. Remember, there has to be some automotive thread to it! Send your suggestions to email@example.com. For our final regular (non-Patreon) show of the year we will finally review the Clark Griswold Classic of Christmas Vacation. We know it's overdue...and we couldn't be more surprised we haven't done it if we work up with our head sewn to the carpet. ======================================== BIG NEWS! The tale of Ralphie Parker and his desire for a Red Ryder BB gun is ingrained in Americana, thanks in part to the 24-hour marathon on the Turner Broadcast networks beginning in the late 1990's. It's set in the late 1930's and is laid over with Jean Shephard's voice telling the tale of his youth. From fighting bullies with green teeth, to being tricked into radio commercials for Ovaltine, to his old man's desire for a MAJOR AWARD, this movie has it all and never gets old. There are even old cars, a tongue stuck to a frozen pole, and a duck that gets his head cut off. PERFECT 10 LITTLE DEBBIE CHRISTMAS TREE RATING. A Christmas Story Christmas Review: Remember when I told you in the original Christmas Story Review that the whole movie was a love letter to his dad? I was right! Ralphie is an adult now with a wife and kids of his own, and he has to deal with the passing of his Old Man at Christmas while simultaneously dealing with his own career midlife crisis. There are bar flies that will amuse you, a mom that hides from the scourge of the earth (known as carolers). Thanks to his wife and his mom Ralhie gets the win, teaches his kids how to stand up to bullies, and has a few beers with his life long friends. And fixes a Plymouth radiator with a half dozen eggs. This masterpiece is going to rival - for some - the best movie of 2022. Watch out Top Gun Maverick, and screw the crappy review that the New York Times gave. This is a classic for the rest of time! It's time to get ready for Christmas! It's time to make your list and check them twice. Time to trim the tree and hang the stockings. Time for eggnog and ugly Christmas sweaters,Chevy Chase and Christmas Vacation.Let's go!We're going to get ready for Christmas by looking at the characters in the Christmas story and asking: What are they doing there? You see, to the ancient people of the Bible, none of the characters belonged there – not Mary or Joseph, not the shepherds or the wise men. But God chose each of them for a very specific reason: Each one points to the sort of people God is always making room for. We're kicking off our new series, Make Room, by looking at a guy named John. He announced Jesus was coming, yet, at one point, John wasn't even sure he believed in Jesus! John is in the story because, for God...The Christmas story makes room for doubt. Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our 2023 Holiday Special! It all started 9 years ago with a random idea: we were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let's create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born! Every year we rekindle the past (and occasionally add a little something new), assembling some of the best moments from our hosts for the most fantastic holiday special ever! Debating what constitutes a Christmas movie and specials we love, what makes for a great Christmas movie, Christmas cliches we love, and bringing back Recasting the Classics with a look at how we would remake National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation! That's not all, oh no. The Christmas spirit kicks into overdrive as we open up and share our personal memories of the holiday season, stories that remind us of Christmas. And no holiday special would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, so get ready for as much St. Nick as legally allowed as Santa Claus drops by the studio to tell us just how naughty or nice we are, all throughout the episode! With a special game from Amanda, Santa in his sleigh, John's obsession with puppets, Scott's first Christmas Poem, and a lot of fun for everyone – This is the one podcast you don't want to miss this holiday season! The industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails is the creation of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor. While living in Cleveland in 1987, Reznor worked as an assistant engineer and janitor at Right Track Studios. He had free access to the studio between bookings, and took inspiration from Prince to play all instruments himself to produce his material. The name Nine Inch Nails comes from a quote by Al Jourgensen, lead singer of the metal band Ministry - "Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole." The debut studio album entitled Pretty Hate Machine was released by TVT Records in October 1989. It has an industrial synth feel, with dark lyrics driven by angst, despair, and betrayal. Unlike much of the industrial rock of the time, songs on Pretty Hate Machine feature catchy riffs and hooks, and the song structure employs a traditional verse and chorus approach rather than continually repeating electronics. The result would prove to be both a commercial and critical success, reaching number 75 on the US album charts.Although Reznor produced and performed all the instrumentation on the album, he soon found himself in need of a touring band, particularly when he was brought in to open for Guns N' Roses on their European Tour. Many musicians have been brought into the Nine Inch Nails over the years, but Reznor remained the only permanent member until his frequent collaborator, Atticus Ross, was brought in as a member in 2016.Lynch brings us this pioneering industrial rock album for this week's podcast. Head Like a HoleThe opening track to the album was the second and most commercially successful single, reaching number 28 on the US Alternative Airplay charts. It also took inspiration from the quote from Al Jourgensen of Ministry. The song is about the control that money has over people and the pain and suffering associated with it. Terrible LieThis song reflects the anger and despair of a person going through a bad time in their life and blaming it on God. "(Hey god) why are you doing this to me? Am I not living up to what I'm supposed to be? Why am I seething with this animosity? (Hey god) I think you owe me a great big apology."SinWhen we give in to our darker impulses, perhaps driven by desire or betrayal, we can find ourselves in a spiral of self-destruction and sabotage. The song is about the pain and destructiveness that can lurk below the surface.Down In ItThis is the debut single from the album. During the making of the video, a camera attached to a weather balloon became detached and flew 200 miles away. When found in a farmer's field the FBI was called in to investigate what appeared to be a gang or cult slaying of Reznor. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture "Christmas Vacation 3" The success of "Christmas Vacation" inspired a number of sequels. STAFF PICKS:Higher Ground by the Red Hot Chili PeppersRob's staff pick is a cover of a song Stevie Wonder originally released in 1973. While the original went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, the energetic remake by the Red Hot Chili Peppers also achieved commercial success, reaching number 26 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. It was the first RHCP song to chart.Bad Love by Eric ClaptonBruce brings us the second single from Clapton's eleventh solo studio album. This is a comeback album, as Clapton had recently become sober after dealing with alcoholism. It hit number 16 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. This song features Phil Collins on percussion and backing vocals. and would be awarded the Grammy for Best male Rock Vocal Performance in 1990. Good Work by the BoDeansWayne features a rockabilly party song from a Wisconsin group. The BoDeans have been called roots rock, heartland rock, and alternative, but their retro 50's sound and driving live performance makes them a great band to see. They performed extensively with U2 on The Joshua Tree tour, and remain popular in the US Midwest. The Last Worthless Evening by Don HenleyLynch closes out the staff picks with a hit from Henley's album "The End of the Innocence" that went to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The lyrics are a plea from an ex to just move on. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pacific 202 by 808 StateThis Manchester electronic music group takes its name from the Roland TR 808 drum machine.

God's people have always lived and been forced to reckon with the mystery of the way God works. I keep thinking I will get to the end of it and figure out what God is up too. But alas, even at my age I sometimes feel like Clark Griswold in Christmas Vacation, when his cousin Eddie shows up and asks, “You surprised to see us, Clark?” And Clark replies, “Oh, Eddie, if I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now.” The book of Habakkuk forces us to ponder the mystery of God's ways. Our problem is, we think we have a right to know how our lives, or the world, ought to go. We live limited by time and geography, in a spot the size of a pin head, in the world. We also have devices that keep up in real time to all the human atrocities in the world, and yet we have no agency to do anything about them. We're left to wonder, “How can this be?” And yet, God sees the whole story from beginning to end, and he can see and orchestrate his grand plan to glorify himself by using even the wickedness of men to praise him and further his kingdom. And, like Habakkuk, all we can do is lament. Join us Sunday, as look at how God answers Habakkuk's lament. It is not what you think—it is both comforting and confounding, a place where we find ourselves often. Hope to see you here!
A place where youth are given a second chance and find hope. Learn how Home On The Range is aiding troubled youth. Plus what hidden fees to beware of when booking hotels... And there is a new Monopoly out in time for the holidays. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 151 Details Fall is upon us now and if like Tigger & BEC, you are too trying to soak up all that fall brings which includes fall fishing. They have been fly fishing for pan fish and BEC is practicing more in hopes of eventually going fly fishing for trout. If you have a place they need to visit for such a trip, please share! NEWS BEARS ENJOY KRISPY KREME DONUTS Anchorage, Alaska may be a likely place for bears to live in the surrounding wilderness, however did you know they are fans too of Krispy Kreme Donuts? Recently a mama bear aka a sow, along with her cub were caught red-handed devouring fresh tasty donuts. A Krispy Kreme delivery driver delivering baked goods, left the door to the van open only to return to find the Mama bear and her cub raiding the van! Local law enforcement was able to chase the bears away using loud sirens. HOTEL TAXES, WATCH YOUR BILL! Some hotels have been adding surprising additional ‘incidental charges' to the hotel bill that may surprise you. Incidental Charges or sometimes called even an extra “hotel tax” or “resort fee”, are additional expenses guests may have thought were included in the hotel stay. The hotel deems these items or amenities as those that are beyond the basic room rate or standard room rate. For example, the charges could include pool use, minibar usage, parking fees, internet access as well as now we have experienced charges for daily housekeeping. Every hotel is different, but with trips to Vegas for the upcoming Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) or booking holiday travel over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, we want all advised. The reason for the incidental charge(s) is that hotels claim to be suffering tight margins in the hospitality industry thus putting these previously absorbed costs back on the consumer. So there ya have it, beware of Hotel Hidden costs and check your bills carefully upon booking and at checkout. FREE FOOD SAMPLER ABUSER Many of us who have visited stores giving out free samples of some treat, may have at least once in our life or may be guilty of being an abuser of said Free Food Samples. Costco may be curbing some of that as news was released, by The Takeout, that those who are huge fans of grabbing the freebies or feel it is part of their reason for a membership may be in for a surprise if this hasn't happened already at your local location. Costco is distributing free samples at some locations using self-serve sample kiosks, and the reason behind the change is Labor Shortage. Human product demonstrators can cost the company upwards of $15/hour and there are not a lot of people applying for the jobs. Currently, Costco kiosks in some locations are being used for samples of chips, cookies, and other pre-packaged goods. So Now You Know what else is replacing humans other than just self-checkouts or AI these days… and if you are one that often takes up a second job during the Holiday Months, it is being reported that there are fewer jobs being posted at this time for Holiday Help by nationwide retailers. NEWS HOME ON THE RANGE Guest: Jolene Obrigewitch, Development Director Home On The Range - A place where youth are given a second chance and find hope. https://hotrnd.com/ Every year a major fundraiser for the nonprofit Home On The Range is the PRCA Champions Ride Saddle Bronc Match. SPOTLIGHT TALENTED YOUTH DOING AMAZING THINGS So often we praise the talents of youth who play on a field or in a gym. Recently, we learned of two high school seniors in central North Dakota attending Wishek Public School who have been stepping up this fall and setting a great example. Javen Meidinger and Trestan Lepp have been doing just that. Thus far Meidinger and Lepp have been able to fix components on the score table, build a loft in the school's shed for extra storage, weld legs on dividing walls to stabilize better, and they have made a few carts that are being used in the shop as well as help out with other small projects. Gentlemen - you receive our Tip of the Hat and we wish you a successful future as you are already setting a great example for others. Clark. Ellen. Rusty. And...Audrey. Back in 1983, National Lampoon's Vacation featured the Griswolds as the quintessential American family attempting to have a cross-country road trip. The fact that everything went wrong only made them more endearing to movie audiences, more than quadrupling the film's budget at the box office. But now, forty years later, what's the wear and tear on this thing? Is this Chevy Chase's finest "Vacation"? Did Aunt Edna deserve better? And is a dead dog ever a laughing matter? The Old Roommates fill 'er up and revisit this 80's comedy classic through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Giff's 2nd Chance is from 1994, what he describes as minute-for-minute the funniest movie ever: Dumb and Dumber. Jim Carrey was on a roll in 1994 and Jeff Daniels stepped out of his usual style to create a comedy classic. It's also the movie that got the Farrelly brothers off and running to dominate comedy in the 90s. In our minds, this is also one of the most quotable movies ever, which will be obvious as we take you through it. So to cap off the episode, we draft our favorite most quotable movies. You'll hear some of the classics like Caddyshack and Christmas Vacation and some that have made it into the everyday lexicon like Forrest Gump. What do you like to quote? Did it make our list?
