Braga, King, and Ski talk Novocaine. Jack Quaid plays a guy who can't feel pain and tries to rescue his new love after she was kidnapped during a bank robbery. Fun action, flimsy plot points, and Ski discovers a new word. Is it any good? Listen!
Seth chose a movie that hardly anyone heard of because it wasn't in theaters long and had basically no advertising so this was a surprise.Support the show
Mary joins Caitlin to cover 2025's Companion. It's a fun movie that raises questions about AI, ethics, toxic relationships, and identity. It's got a great cast, fun soundtrack, and culturally relevant story. Tangents include: pets, Diet Coke, Jurassic World, trailers, The Sand, edging, customizing our theoretical companion bots, Jack Quaid, Sophie Thatcher, a FMK, annoyances, theaters, and Happy Meals.
The success of the latest Final Destination movie is one of the biggest surprises of the first part of the year. Even more shocking is a reported incident from Argentina that is one of the truest cases of life imitating art ever seen. Deadly truth, false internet reporting, or best marketing ever? We finally saw our first look at the It prequel series Welcome to Derry and neither of us were particularly impressed. Of course, we will be watching the HBO Max show, but the trailer was very disappointing. It as a little too familiar. That being said, we have high hopes for the show's potential. We have championed indie horror on our humble little podcast for years. And since we have watched so many small budget films, we understand some of the constraints that come with them. Production values are lower, actors are not as well known, and there is less access to resources. Knowing this, we adjust our expectations and are willing to give the benefit of the doubt. One thing we will not forgive is poor writing. A Hard Place is a decent enough idea. Criminals are caught in the middle of a war between two monster factions. There is just so much going on that nothing leaves an impact. Add in the fact that none of the many characters are developed and the end result is a film that feels pointless. For years, people have complained about the number of remakes and superhero movies. “We want new stuff!” they all scream. This is not limited to a vocal minority. Critics include it in reviews, film fans discuss it while trying to figure out their best Wes Anderson movie, and even the average person on the street has strong feelings about the topic. And then a movie like Companion comes along. Topical, cast filled with young stars, and a director working on his first feature film. And nobody went to see it. But maybe it wasn't that good? We talk about the performances, themes, and tone while trying to figure out why no one went out to see a movie that was exactly what they wanted. The animated film's producer talked about what elements of the story from the comic had to be in this movie. He talks about his voice cast including David Dastmalchian, Naya Rivera, Troy Baker, and getting Jack Quaid before his role in The Boys. What's up, humans? This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Chad and Eugene to break down the 2025 sci-fi horror film Companion. We explore the existential and ethical questions the film raises: Are sentient machines deserving of rights? What defines humanity and self-awareness? We also praise standout performances, such as Sophie Thatcher's evolution from naive companion to self-aware survivor, and Jack Quaid's portrayal of a manipulative partner. We make comparisons to Ex Machina, M3GAN, and Black Mirror, and discuss the film's major twists. Wrapping up, we, each give a Good, Bad, and Ugly, along with our final scoring of the film. We also weigh in on whether Companion adds anything new to the AI horror conversation or just reboots familiar fears with a glossy finish. Thank you, everyone, for your support. Specifically, they take a long-arc view of both franchises and compare the Danielle Harris entries of “Halloween” in the 1980s to “Scream” (2022) and “Scream VI.” The conversation highlights the importance of Sidney Prescott's character in the “Scream” series and critiques the notion of passing the torch to new characters. After some technical issues, Vikki Martin returns to the show to talk about Companion! SPOILER ALERT! We get into all aspects of this film. We wonder why Warner Brothers Discovery chose to spoil the twist in their advertising for Max. We into that great opening scene, fantastic performances by Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Harvey Guillien, how Vikki figured out the twist from the preview & noticed things Rick didn't pick up on. We also get into how excited Rick was to see his improv acquaintance, Woody Fu, in Companion, the horror of the male O face, the moviegoing experience, skynet actively trying to stop us from talking about fuckbots, send our apologies to Chelsea for how much editing she had to do & more! An interesting movie mix for you this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director DUNCAN SKILES and his new film NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, and director LORCAN FINNEGAN and his latest THE SURFER. As different as night and day, both films showcase storytelling creativity and some incredible – and indelible – performances, most notably from Nic Cage in THE SURFER. First up, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH. Directed by DUNCAN SKILES, who you may know best for directing THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH rises and falls on the compelling mystery plot and the performances by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ed and Jack Quaid as Simon. As you will hear from Duncan in this pre-recorded exclusive interview, he was drawn to writer Sean Farley's script for its unique and heartwarming dynamic between Ed and Simon. Duncan found it sweet, bittersweet, and not overly sentimental. The script had a mix of elements – thrills, mystery, and comedy – which appealed to him, and which he brings to life with a naturalistic look and feel thanks to cinematographer Luke McCoubrey. After THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER, Duncan was looking for something lighter, and this script was an easy read where he found himself rooting for the characters and wanting to spend time with them. Then we switch gears and hit the western coast of Australia with the sun and the surf with director LORCAN FINNEGAN and THE SURFER with a total mind fuck, batshit brilliant performance by Nic Cage. Needless to say, I love this movie! A psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan, a man identified as "The Surfer" – played by Cage – returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, played by Finn Little of "Yellowstone" fame. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals led by Scally – maniacally played by Julian McMahon – whose mantra is "don't live here, don't surf here." Humiliated and angry, "The Surfer" is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point. Take a listen as Lorcan breaks down THE SURFER from Cage to story to casting to cinematography to editing to sound to score, and even the appearance of native snakes and a kookabura. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
This week, the whole gang is back together! Yay! Evan and Megan start out by reviewing Paul Feig's whodunnit dark comedy, ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR (2:33), a sequel to you guessed it, A SIMPLE FAVOR. While it retains the crackling chemistry between its leads, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, the movie doesn't have much going for it other than its gorgeous location and fashions; its writing and dialogue are abysmal, and it's glacially paced. Next, we all discuss Eli Craig's horror film CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD (19:43), which is set in a small midwestern town that's terrorized by a killer clown in a cornfield. There's a lot more to this slasher than it seems from the title; it's well-paced, funny, features memorable kills, and has smart social commentary. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Drew Hancock's sci-fi thriller COMPANION, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid!
On this episode of "Streaming Without A Paddle", Andrew and Ted sit down to discuss their thoughts about HBO Max's SciFi/Thriller movie "Companion", starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as well as co-starring Megan Suri, Lukas Gage, and Harvey Gillén.
Tread Perilously settles in for a month of shows that inspired WandaVision with an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show called "Racy Tracy Rattigan". With Alan Brady out on vacation, Rob and the others must write the next two shows for guest host "Racy" Tracy Rattigan. The British actor proves to be funny and charming, but his immediate interest in Laura leaves Rob a little unnerved. It becomes full-tilt unnerved when Rattigan comes to their home under the guise of working on sketches, but ends up coming on to Laura. Will Rob's response sink Rattigan's commitment to the show? Erik returns from his own vacation with some rusty podcast skills and the wrong microphone. He and Justin get back into the swing of things via a chat about Jack Quaid and the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. The pair also fall in love with Mary Tyler Moore all over again. Justin learns the Morey Amsterdam joke and immediately warms to Rose Marie. Guest star Richard Dawson gets some flowers even as Erik tries to determine if Rattigan is supposed to be Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, or both. Though not on screen, Carl Reiner proves to be the MVP. But will a 1963 episode of the show turn out surprisingly modern?

Send us a textWe close out our “Eyes Wide Open” theme cycle with the 2009 Ti West film House of the Devil, in which a college student takes a babysitting job that turns into the night from hell. We also discuss all things babysitter: our childhood experiences with babysitters, whether any of us have been a babysitter, and some notable babysitters in movies. Karl also messes up Jack Quaid's name, and he DEFINITELY hasn't been embarrassed about it in the weeks that have followed the recording.
This week we take a look at Jack Quaid in Novocaine. we also take a look at the Climbing game White knuckle over on steam.
Up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's the DCAU Review and they're here to celebrate Superman Day a day late with a continuance of Elseworld's Finest Month and a look at the Man of Steel's most recent iteration in animation, My Adventures with Superman. The hosts pick up where they left off last May with Part II of "Adventures of a Normal Man" and discuss a plot the leans heavily on dialogue and world building while separating itself from other animated versions of Superman. The hosts also talk the main Superman theme, Jack Quaid's take on the Man of Steel, foreshadowing of Task Force X and whether they prefer their Superman capes with or without the "S." All of this and much more await on this week's all new DCAU Review! Please Consider Supporting the Podcast:Become a monthly or one time supporter of the pod at https://buymeacoffee.com/DCAUReviewSubscribe to the pod on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and please consider leaving us a 5-star reviewSubscribe to our new YouTube Channel Support the pod by picking up some merch at our shop https://dcaureview.myspreadshop.comFollow us: Twitter/X @DCAUReview Instagram @DCAUReviewFinal Scores:Plot: Cal: 6/10 – Liam: 7/10Visuals/Animation: Cal: 7/10 – Liam: 8/10Music: Cal: 7/10 – Liam: 6/10Voice Acting: Cal: 8/10 – Liam: 8/10Bonus Point: NoneFinal Tally: Cal: 28/40 – Liam: 29/40

In the gleefully grisly action movie Novocaine, Jack Quaid plays a sweet, nerdy guy who does not experience physical pain. He falls for a woman (Amber Midthunder) who's determined to get him to leave his safe, risk-averse life behind. That happens in a big and very bloody way when she gets kidnapped by bank robbers, and he sets out to rescue her.To access bonus episodes and sponsor-free listening for Pop Culture Happy Hour, subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour+ at plus.npr.org/happy.
