Send us a textBOSS OF IT ALL (2006)Well, as the famous playwright Antonio Gambini once wrote: All good things (and Season 13 of TGTPTU) must come to a close. And what better stage for which our four hosts to give their final thoughts and review of the four directors covered this 4x4 season, as well as their general opinions of Lars von Trier, than with LvT's office comedy THE BOSS OF IT ALL (2006)? (Sorry, we can't hear you response. This isn't a radio show, and you're not live on the air and it was a rhetorical question as The House that Jack Built would have been better, your author of the Show Notes knows, but the movie was banned from discussion by the TGTPTU's boss of it all.) Before LvT's crippling depression set in (see previous episode covering 2009's Antichrist), while mainly dealing with anxiety, and in-between his second and still unmade third installment of his America Trilogy, the enfant terrible and Cannes darling challenged himself with a genre he'd yet to, and hasn't returned to, film: a comedy. While edited using his Dogme 95-influenced time-cut style, instead of hand-held camerawork by LvT himself The Boss of It All was another- first-and-only for the filmmaker in using Automavision. This LvT invented technique let a computer decide focus and movement as replacement for a cameraperson. Allowing the blame to be put on the computer instead of himself, LvT symbolically repeats the conceit of his comedy where the character of Ravn hires an amateur actor and playwright Gambini stan Kristoffer, played by Jens Albinus (mentioned previous ep), to pretend to be The Boss of It All, an absentee owner that Ravn created to pretend he did not own the company and to shunt unpopular decisions but now needs Kristoffer to pretend to be in order to sell the company. Hilarity ensues.    Join the fearsome foursome for their collective explorations of neoliberal capitalism while, individually, Ken predicts beyond the new year into the near future by betting LvT has sent drones back in time to shoot the comedy that will be Year 2025; Thomas nearly learns Danish; Ryan reveals he hates the look of a $20k engine inside a Datsun; and Jack stays awake for the entire film.  And keep listening past the wrap of our fourth movie by our fourth director to enjoy a surprise visit from a musical guest--the Boss himself--who introduces hosts' LvT four-film rankings and Season 13 reflections.THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @mrkoral.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

We've arrived at the end of our year long study of the films of Lars von Trier and we wish we could say that we hate seeing him go but it's been a very, predictably, rough year. Today we discuss his last feature film that stars a pretty ageless Matt Dillon who is a serial killer. He recounts his life of horror to the poet Virgil in 5 distinct incidents that he shares. It's “THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT” from 2018. A character study late in the career of the notorious director. The film also stars Uma Thurman, Bruno Ganz, Riley Keough and some other character actors we've seen all year long in von Trier films. What works about this study in psychopathy and what doesn't? We also revisit our scores of Lars's films over the past year and there have been some adjustments since our discussions. Join us as we say goodbye to Lars von Trier films (at least for a bit) and at the end of the episode we reveal who the director of 2025 will be that we will spend the entire year discussing their catalog. Next year's director might even be more controversial than Lars! Hear us tell of it. The plot follows Jack (Matt Dillon), a serial killer who, over a 12-year period in the late 1970s & 1980s, commits numerous murders in the Pacific Northwest. USA in the 1970s. We follow the highly intelligent Jack over a span of 12 years and are introduced to the murders that define Jack's development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack's point of view, while he postulates that each murder is an artwork in itself. As the inevitable police intervention is drawing nearer, he is taking greater and greater risks in his attempt to create the ultimate artwork. Along the way we experience Jack's descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge--a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and psychopathic explanations. The House That Jack Built is a dark and sinister story, yet presented through a philosophical and occasional humorous tale.—Zentropa Entertainmentshttps://www.facebook.com/castofthepodhttps://twitter.com/CastofthePodhttps://www.instagram.com/castofthepod/https://www.youtube.com/@castofthepodhttps://www.reddit.com/r/CastOfThePod/https://www.instagram.com/cobweb411/Call the hotline 786-763-2278https://www.twitch.tv/castofthepodhttps://www.spreaker.com/show/castofthepodhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cast-of-the-pod/id1525172143?uo=4https://www.spreaker.com/show/castofthepodhttps://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc3ByZWFrZXIuY29tL3Nob3cvNDUxNjQ0OC9lcGlzb2Rlcy9mZWVkhttps://castbox.fm/channel/id3153438https://www.deezer.com/show/1559032 takes a day to updatehttps://podcastaddict.com/podcast/3051055 https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/cast-of-the-pod-1357456 https://radiopublic.com/cast-of-the-pod-6VNjy3https://www.stitcher.com/show/cast-of-the-podMusic by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio and more

But one listen will explain why Dave Marsh included it in his list of the 1,001 greatest 45s. As a double thrill, you also get her dynamite cover of the Dionne Warwick hit from the year before on the flip. Aretha's version actually was a bigger hit on the Black chart (#3) than Dionne's was (#6). By the way, the A side is a non-album tune, while the flip is specially edited from a 3:30 album track. Note: This beautiful copy has a drillhole and comes in a vintage Atlantic Records factory sleeve. (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)

It is one of the great wonders of American business that the same handful of companies have run the movies in Hollywood, almost since the beginning. After all, how many American industries of 2023 feature a power structure that would be familiar to someone from the late 1920's? Yes, there were mergers then, like the ones that created MGM, Universal and Fox, and today there are yet more mergers, the challenges of adjusting to a streaming culture, and globalization. And yes, there is Dreamworks, but there's still Paramount, and Columbia, and Universal, and Fox, and iterations of both MGM and UA, and of course the looming shadow of Disney. And while Warner Brothers is now part of Time Warner, which is part of Discovery (SO complicated), it's still very much the powerful and influential studio that the eponymous brothers opened on April 4, 1923. After wars, depressions and recessions and other complete erasures and redrawings, those familiar logos that we and our grandparents saw as children remain. Therefore, since TCM seems to have stolen so many ideas from us (viz Episode 31 on best final films by great directors), we return the favor here by using this episode to celebrate Warners' centennial. We thought it silly to try to come up with our three favorite films by the studio, so we each came up with three (warning, there are double entries) films for which the studio was either producer, the main distributor or both, that have had the most impact on us. We also tried to avoid films we've already discussed a lot, and strike out in some new directions. So come join us as among our many stops, we ride the rails with the wild boys of the road, make a stop in Ford Country, go as far afield as Bette Davis in Malaysia and Audrey Hepburn in the Congo, and end up in space with the Mercury astronauts. We promise an amazing trip, though, as Warners' greatest star often said, we should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque…

We watched The Sadness before it was available for streaming in the US because we are a big time movie review podcast. I can easily say that this is one of the craziest movies I've ever seen, and will stick with me for a long time. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website (1:30) - Intro(7:00) -Synopsis(9:00) -Review(17:45) -Score(26:17) -Spoilers(1:23:35) - Horror Movie WHOORES https://youtu.be/VUR1DWh7eLs Synopsis The Sadness follows boyfriend Jim (Berant Zhu) and girlfriend Kat (Regina Lei) on their normal day in Taiwan. Unfortunately for our couple, this normal day is the day that the Alvin virus hits their city. The Alvin virus is a pandemic that they've been hearing about for a while but no one seems to be taking seriously. As the virus hits their hometown, people start to die, and worse, rape each other in the streets. The virus causes people to cry as they assault each other while simultaneously exhibiting total ecstasy in causing pain and torture. It seems to unlock the most reprehensible parts of people and make them capable of depravity you've never even seen in horror movies. Will Jim and Kat make it through, or will the sadness take them?  Review Canadian writer, director Rob Jabbaz brought this manga adaptation of Crossed (Garth Ennis and Alan Moore)to Taiwan to film. This is his first full-length feature film. Without question, this is one of the most depraved movies I've ever seen in terms of dialog. The violence is absolutely absurd and over-the-top. The themes are disgusting, and are meant to cast a light on the absurdities of politicizing a major health concern such as a pandemic.  I heard a little bit about The Sadness before I watched it, enough to brace myself, which was good because I don't think I would have enjoyed it otherwise. The makeup, effects, and execution is unbelievable, rivaling that of similar splatter movies like Braindead / Dead Alive. This is a slick movie that is well made, and outpaces most action movies handily. It's also so absurdly disgusting that I imagine many won't be able to finish it. Watch The SadnessWatch on ShudderClick Here to Subscribe to Shudder It takes the old premise of zombies and the morality tales that they brought to the silver screen and pops a monster truck engine under the hood before sending you to hell with tears streaming from your eyes. The Sadness is super gross, but it does have something of a point, which seems to make it easier to take in.  The non-stop themes of rape, murder, and stupendously disgusting dialog where characters describe in vivid detail the acts of violent sodomy they wish to perform made me so happy that this wasn't in English. Had I heard those words spoken in a language that I understood, I would have been sickened to my core. The only movie that I've reviewed that left me feeling almost as gross as this was The House that Jack Built. Not many will be able to get through this one and those who do will have to live with all those nasty thoughts in their head.
