Send us a textWe're gargling out the taste of comic book fare on our 104th episode yet still swimming the turbulent oceans of their inspiration, the source of their epic power and mystery: Homer's Odyssey!Yes we're going to compare and contrast two versions of the Odyssey as seen through the eyes of Italian filmmakers starting with 1954's Ulysses directed by Mario Camerini and starring Kirk Douglas, Silvana Magano and Anthony Quinn up against 2024's The Return directed by Uberto Pasolini and starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Charlie Plummer and Marwan Kenzari. My guests today are my two stodgy, nose-in-the air, advanced-degree holding, cohorts, kid sis and lit major Roseanne Caputi and Master Thespian, the mellifluous voice behind the most famous Hard Mountain Dew Code Red spot of all time, Gordon Alex Robertson! Before we dig in, the synopses:Ulysses (1954): A mythical adventure following the Greek hero Ulysses as he embarks on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War, encountering mythical creatures and divine beings before coming back to his wife Penelope. The Return (2024) delves into the emotional journey of Odysseus returning to Ithaca after his long absence in the Trojan War, finding his kindome in ruins, a strained relationship between him and Penelope and his son Telemachus, and the challenges of reintegrating into family life after years of war and separation.Which is the grandest telling of the classic poem?Find out! Watch the podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/AkDJke7ldRo

Director Nabil Elderkin shoots music videos and films governed by vision, collaboration and diversity. While thematic similarities connect the dots between his projects, each video is different and a product of the stellar combination of the right artist, the right lighting, and maybe most importantly - the right feel. Growing up in a multi-cultural sphere, dictated by several international moves, led to an open-mindedness and an adaptability which did not hurt his transition into film. Surfing was the context which facilitated his portal in, and although he spent more time on the beach than in the water, the education he received, through direct exposure shooting his friends, was invaluable. His photography interest and experience developed further when he settled in Chicago, and came into Kanye West's orbit. Soon after, he started shooting music videos for a dossier for artists which continues to expand, and includes The Black Eyed Peas, Common, Seal, Bruno Mars, Foals, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Dua Lipa and Kendrick Lamar. For his work on Swim Good and Mercy, which feature Frank Ocean and Kanye West, respectively, Nabil received 3 VMA nominations, including Best Direction in a Video and Best Hip Hop Video for the latter. Among his feature films are the Ugandan breakdancing documentary, Bouncing Cats, and the gut-wrenching exploration of trauma - Gully - which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 and stars Charlie Plummer, Amber Heard, Jacob Latimore, Terrence Howard and John Corbett. In our conversation, we discussed the kernels of his film beginnings; working with actors like Willem Dafoe and Don Cheadle; collaborating with friends like John Legend; upcoming music video and narrative concepts he is developing; and a memorable encounter with Snoop Dogg.Opening Credits: HoliznaPATREON - Green Again ( LoFi) I CC BY-NC-ND 4.0; Anitek - Gnats I CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US. The Master of Disaster director Roland Emmerich has returned with a $140 million sci-fi disaster movie called Moonfall. It was a total bomb at the box office with terrible reviews, so we had to see it in IMAX! The stupid plot involves the Moon as a megastructure built by aliens that is now on a collision course with the Earth. Only Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, and John Bradley flying the Space Shuttle Endeavour into the hollow Moon can save the Earth from total annihilation. This hilariously brain-numbing movie drew mixed reactions, but certainly angered one particularly hotheaded Lodgecast host. The movie also stars Michael Pena, Charlie Plummer, and Kelly Yu, with a cameo by Donald Sutherland. Screw the Moon!!

The film is directed by Hollywood's favorite big-budget disaster flick helmer, Roland Emmerich, which means it is filled with worldwide destruction, an illogical story, and shallow characters, but that's what you're expecting. Right? Grab a bucket of popcorn, sit back, try not to think about it, and just enjoy the devastation. But were we able to do that? Was that enough for us? This week's episode takes us back to the good old days. You know, when we would have a review that started off on track and it would just ever so slowly veer off the rails. Yes, we're back and more spontaneous than ever. We watched "Spontaneous" starring Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer. It's been awhile since we've seen Katherine on the screen, but she has made her return to playing a ~quirky~ girl who's just trying to graduate without combusting. Literally. We never get an answer as to why the senior class is exploding, but you get a few answers of our least favorite things: words, articles of clothing, and comedy shows that can't get with the times. Sometimes (a lot of the times) Rotten Tomatoes is a liar. Luke and Hamza are honoured by Katy Schutte's (katyschutte.co.uk) presence. The legendary improviser suggested Spontaneous, Brian Duffield's romantic black comedy. Starring Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, Hayley Law, Piper Perabo, Rob Huebel and Yvonne Orji, it shocks and delights. The story about exploding high school students brings up our own memories of arrogantly exploding at school, and a deep dive into late 80s/early 90s weird culture. The secrets of flying saucers,  Hamza's elite training as part of Vendetta, the source of Katy's hat-making skills and why Luke is the intellectual great-grandson of Albert Einstein. More stuff > here! One Night in Miami (Prime Video)Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Eli Goree as Cassius Clay, Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown, and Leslie Odom Jr. as Sam Cooke, One Night in Miami is a fictionalized version of what happened between the four icons in a Miami hotel room on the night Cassius Clay beat Sonny Listen to become the Heavyweight Champion of the World. One Night in Miami gets a ton of buzz as the theatrical directorial debut for Regina King. King is becoming a Hollywood powerhouse in both TV and movies in front of the camera. We're old enough to remember her as Brenda, the little girl on the steps on 227 We've followed her career closely. From Boyz n the Hood, Jerry Maguire to American Crime, and of course Watchmen. As she builds her reputation as a director, she is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. Spontaneous EPIXDirected by  Brian Duffield from the novel by  Aaron Starmer, Spontaneous stars Katherine Langford who we last saw in Knives Out-recommended on a previous episode. The strong supporting cast includes Charlie Plummer. Rob Huebel, Piper Perabo play the parents, along with Chelah Horsdal, who we loved as Helen Smith in one of our favorites, The Man in the High Castle.  Riverdale fans will recognize Hayley Law. Much more than a teenage sci-fi story about an exploding senior class, Spontaneous is a black comedy, social commentary, love story, political statement, and coming of age nightmare. We can't recommend it highly enough.

After a brief lament about the lack of reviews from disabled readers, we dig into the book, which we think is doing pretty solid work, and the film, which takes a few Hollywood shortcuts, but is also decent.Up for discussion: a gentle male friendship for Brenna, Canadian stunt casting, the visual depiction of schizophrenia in the film and why we would politely like to recommend Charlie Plummer to refrain from taking any more "Bang roles".Wanna connect with the show? The time has come to cover the fall season's buzziest YA adaptation, in which high school seniors are mysteriously popping! And the verdict is: both texts are fine. Lol.For this episode, we're asking the hard hitting questions:-What happens when a book about friendship becomes a movie about romance? (Bye Tess!)-Why do so many wealthy, successful people have bad hair? Charlie Plummer -What's more distracting: the way Katherine Langford's body is shot or her atrocious wig?-Did Starmer have a plan for this story beyond its great hook?Plus: great parents! A terrible role for Insecure's Yvonne Orji! And, finally, egregious Dude Bro voice!Wanna connect with the show? Spontaneous will have you simultaneously contemplating your own mortality and igniting your need to seize the day [Interview with writer/director Brian Duffield ] Director Brian Duffield talks about how he keeps a positive vibe on set, his experience working with the A-Team cast of Katherine Langford, Piper Perabo, Hayley Law and Charlie Plummer and the difficult balance of keeping a movie about exploding teenagers light and breezy Here's what happened. Rob was like "Ohmigosh... we're going to talk to Brian Duffield next week about his new movie Spontaneous!" **Crickets** "Jane Got a Gun?" **Crickets** "The Babysitter?" **Crickets** "Underwater...Kristen Stewart? Oh c'mon, you're on a movie podcast!" So as you can imagine, I was super psyched to check out this dude's movie, who apparently everybody knows, by the way.  Per usual, I didn't watch the trailer or read a single thing about the film before starting, which I'm convinced really does make for the best viewing experience.  I can't tell how weirdly excited I got when Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why/ Love Simon) came on screen.  I love her. Like, love love, her.  I'm certain we would be the kind of best friends that snuggle and drink cocoa together on a chilly Fall day. Katherine Langford in Spontaneous I digress. Spontaneous is an absolutely bonkers movie.  It's not a spoiler to say that the premise of the movie is that high schoolers are randomly and asymptomatically, spontaneously combusting.  It might surprise you to know that this fact ends up being very little of what the movie is about. Instead, Spontaneous explores love and friendship and how you treat every moment differently when you realize that every moment that follows might be your last. Post-spontaneous combustion of a classmate. You never feel overtaken by extreme emotions.  Duffield balances tragedy with humor and grief with the possibility of tomorrow.  We discuss the importance of not overwhelming the audience, with what is a very grim story. At the same time, Duffield aims to infuse just enough shock, that you leave feeling compelled to live your life a little differently. We hope you enjoy listening to Brian Duffield as much as we did.  Spontaneous is available October 2nd on October 6th on VOD.

After The Fault in our Stars and Paper Towns, Brenna and Joe are checking back into Manic Pixie Dream Girl territory with John Green's problematic first novel Looking for Alaska, which was just adapted by The O.C. and Gossip Girl scribes Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage into an eight episode Hulu series. Up for discussion: does the book contain enough sign posts that protagonist Miles' perspective should not be trusted? Does the book suffer without its titular object of affection? And how has the controversy around this novel driven Green's entire career? Meanwhile, in the film (as Brenna keeps referring to it), we discuss an odd case of streaming creep, the decision to re-structure the novel's "Before" and "After" section and Brenna dives into the adaptation's iffy track record on race and class. The official plot reads, “ A picture-perfect family is shattered when the work of a serial killer hits too close to home. McDermott stars in this chilling portrait of all-American evil.” In this interview, Skiles discusses his love of cinema, the origin story and influences behind ‘Clovehitch,’ making a disturbing movie set in daytime, the necessity of trial and error, moving from over-the-top to reserved works, and creating outcasts in film. The second film is THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER from director Duncan Skiles tells a coming-of-age story where a young boy suspects a notorious killer's identity may reveal the monster to be too close to home.  Doc Rotten and Vanessa Thompson from Horror News Radio along with Jeff Mohr from Decades of Horror: The Classic Era share their thoughts about this week's awesome collection of streaming horror films.  Gruesome Magazine Podcast - Episode 043 The Clovehitch Killer - The Heretics The Heretics A notorious cult kidnaps a young girl, and sacrifice themselves by the light of the locust moon. The next morning the girl awakes, caked in dried blood and surrounded by corpses...but safe - or so she thinks. Years later, the locust moon is about to rise again and the girl is captured once more by a surviving member of the cult. She is taken to a remote cabin where she learns that a demon has been growing inside of her all these years, and before the dawn, it will rise. "From beginning to end, I was engaged in the story, so yeah, kudos to the director and everybody in The Heretics!" - Vanessa "It was a fun watch. I was in it the whole way. … It’s definitely worth a watch." - Jeff "Chad Archibald did a great job and I’m looking forward to more from him. … This has definitely solidified him as one of the talents to keep an eye on." - Doc Director: Chad Archibald Cast: Nina Kiri, Ry Barrett, Jorja Cadence Release: The Heretics available on Demand November 6 and DVD January 5 from Uncork’d Entertainment. The Clovehitch Killer A shocking revelation turns a teenage boy's world upside down in this chilling look at the evil that can lurk below even the most wholesome surface. Tyler Burnside is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad. Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives in: the unsolved murders in which ten women were brutally tortured and killed by a psychopath known as Clovehitch-that rocked the community more than a decade ago. When Tyler discovers a cache of disturbing images in his father's possession, he begins to suspect that the man he trusts most in the world may be Clovehitch-and that his deadly rampage may not be over. With unrelenting tension, director Duncan Skiles crafts a picture-perfect vision of the all-American family-and then piece by piece rips it to shreds. "Two minutes in and I was in love with Dylan McDermott. I’ve never seen him do anything like this before. He’s almost completely unrecognizable because he so becomes this character." - Vanessa It’s not your everyday serial killer movie. I think the script and the acting and the direction are excellent at taking you on the journey through this film and keeping you guessing. I think Dylan McDermott, Charlie Plummer, and Madison Beaty really excel." - Jeff "This is a great surprise because it is not what the trailer suggests it is. It is a far richer, far deeper, far more interesting piece of film and the relationship between these characters is a big part of what makes this work." - Doc Director: Duncan Skiles Cast: Charlie Plummer, Dylan McDermott, Samantha Mathis Release: In Theaters, On Demand and Digital HD: November 16, 2018 from IFC Midnight

The New Romantic is a 2018 Canadian romantic dramedy, written and directed by one of today's guests, Carly Stone. It stars the luminous, lovely Jessica Barden and manages to deconstruct the dating scene in a very unexpected way. It was a pleasure to talk with the writer/director about how her personal experiences informed this story among many other topics of discussion. The Clovehitch Killer is a 2018 mystery thriller, written and directed by my other guest, Duncan Skiles. Like many of us, he developed a fascination with the horrors of the world, taking a cue from Zodiac to tell a Hardy Boys-like tale of a teenager who thinks his father may be up to no good. Charlie Plummer, Dylan McDermott, Samantha Mathis are among the excellent cast in a very unnerving tale of paranoia and obsession. Duncan has a lot of influences and favorite films that I certainly respect and agree with to boot! It was an honor to talk with two young, amicable and incredibly smart filmmakers making their debuts that will be playing either at a theater near you or via video-on-demand very soon. I recommend both titles and I know you'll get a kick out of our conversations even if you're unfamiliar with the names yet. 00:00 - 11:11 - Introduction 11:12 - 23:35 - Interview w/Carly Stone (The New Romantic) 23:36 - 43:20 - Interview w/Duncan Skiles (The Clovehitch Killer)

This week on TIFF Long Take, Rob and Geoff sit down with celebrated director Andrew Haigh. Over the last decade Haigh has established himself as one of the most daring new filmmakers in the industry, writing and directing films 'Weekend', and '45 Years', as well as creating the HBO series 'Looking'. His latest film, 'Lean on Pete', was released earlier this month to critical acclaim. Haigh discusses his early struggles as a filmmaker, why he prioritizes creative control over a higher budget, and what the decline of the “mid-budget film” means for filmmakers at his level. He also talks about why, to this point, he’s only directed his own scripts, what attracted him to ‘Lean on Pete’, and how he approaches working with a great young actor like Charlie Plummer.

Academy Award-nominated director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, The Martian) joins me on the podcast to discuss how he saved his movie ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD from the Kevin Spacey scandal by making the unprecedented decision to recast the role with the legendary Christopher Plummer and reshoot much of the film just 6 weeks before it hits theaters.  He talks about the late billionaire J. Paul Getty, why the richest man in the world refused to pay his own grandsons’ ransom, and what the oil magnate’s heirs have had to say about the film.  Then actor Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire, The Dinner), who plays Getty's kidnapped grandson talks about the unimaginable wealth and privilege that came with being a Getty and what it was like to re-enact the gruesome moment when the real-life John Paul Getty III got his ear chopped off. ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD opens in theatres on Christmas day 12/25.  To find out more visit www.allthemoney-movie.com.  Today's episode is sponsored by Grasshopper.  Please subscribe to Kickass News on Apple Podcasts and take our listener survey at www.podcastlistener.com/KICK.

Inside Out had its Hollywood premiere last week, gearing up for its U.S. wide release this Friday. On this week's episode of Inside The Mouse Castle, we hear from the film's director, Pete Docter, and the some of the voice cast including Amy Poehler, Bill Hader and Lewis Black.   Tim expects Pixar's journey into the mind of an 11-year old girl to be a sure-fire hit while Anthony thinks the film, as good as the early reviews are, is going to under-perform at the box office. It won't do as bad as Tomorrowland, though, not by a long shot. The Brad Bird film starring George Clooney is having a dismal run in theaters and could put Disney in the red $140 million or more.   And, Disney or not, no movie conversation this week is complete with mentioning Jurassic World, so we'll touch on that too, plus these other mind-bending topics: In the story that won't die, is Asa Butterfield really out of the running to be the next Spider-Man? Are Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz the new favorites? Who knows? Because apparently Marvel and Sony can't agree on anything concerning the franchise. We now know the voice cast for Pixar's The Good Dinosaur. After a series of production delays, including a director change and a reworking of the story, the film will open in the U.S. on November 25th. Have you seen the new teaser trailer for Zootopia yet? Tim thinks it looks cute. Anthony, not so much. Frozen Ever After is coming to Epcot's Norway pavilion next year, taking over the space once occupied by Maelstrom. Guests will be able to experience a "Winter in Summer Celebration" courtesy of Queen Elsa in the kingdom of Arendelle. That includes a trip to Elsa's ice palace. Two new restaurants are coming to the Disney Springs (aka the revamped Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World): The Edison and STK Orlando. They're the latest in a long list of new shopping and dining establishments being added to the area. Is it starting to be too much of a good thing? Disney Springs is a far cry from the quaint Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village us old-timers remember from the 1970s and 80s. Star Wars will be in Hall H of this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel will not. Next. Goodbye, Phineas and Ferb. We'll miss you. Well, we'll be missing new episodes. We're sure you'll be rerunning on Disney Channel and Disney XD for a long time to come. J.K. Simmon is joining the voice cast of Gravity Falls. We hope he doesn't throw a chair at Grunkle Stan. Enjoy! www.TheMouseCastle.com
