Episode Summary: In the "Business of Dance" podcast, Menina Fortunato converses with Paul Becker, known for choreographing "The Last of Us," and "Disney Descendants." Paul shares his evolution from breakdancing to choreography, starting when an unexpected chance to choreograph a commercial fell into his lap. The discussion provides insight into Paul's collaborative efforts with Kenny Ortega on "Descendants," turning it from a straightforward film into a celebrated musical. His talent for adapting dance for actors and weaving storytelling into choreography underscores his inventive flair. Paul is candid about past hardships, such as the financial crisis that cost him his home and led to a job at a toy store where he met Ortega, spurring collaborations that shaped his career. Offering wisdom on the dance industry, Paul underscores the importance of character and storytelling. His journey underlines the power of adaptability and grabbing opportunities, serving as motivation for creative industry aspirants. Show Notes: ● (00:01:37) Introduction to Paul Becker ● (00:02:26) Early Years and Self-Taught Dancing ● (00:03:36) Transition to Choreography ● (00:09:07) Financial Crisis and Personal Challenges ● (00:15:51) Working with Non-Dancers and Tapping into Smaller Roles ● (00:28:00) Philosophy on Education and Career Evolution ● (00:33:38) Reading the Room and Professional Etiquette ● (00:35:29) Building Connections and Relationships in Dance ● (00:49:03) Advice and Encouragement to Dancers ● (00:50:23) Impact of Social Media and Art ● (00:50:56) Thanking Paul Becker ● (00:51:27) Conclusion of the Podcast Biography: Paul Becker is a distinguished figure in the entertainment industry, carving out a stellar career as a director, choreographer, writer, and producer. His ascent from an impassioned self-learner in dance to an acclaimed choreographer exemplifies dedication and artistic innovation. From the streets of Victoria, British Columbia, Becker's affinity for movement was ignited by the rhythmic pulses of breakdancing and hip-hop during his early teens. By the age of 19, he had already made his choreographic debut, a transition fueled by his experience on the set of "Chicago," a film that won accolades for its choreography. Becker's choreographic imprint spans over 300 projects, including high-profile films like "Deadpool 2," "Disney's Descendants," and the "Twilight" series. His television credits are equally impressive, featuring popular series such as "The Last of Us," "Riverdale," and "American Horror Story: Hotel." His knack for storytelling through dance and the transformation of non-musical works into dynamic musical spectacles speaks to his ingenuity and versatility. His contributions to the art of dance have been recognized with nominations for three world choreography awards and an MTV award victory for "Best Musical Number" in 2021. Moreover, he has been honored with the Leo Award for his outstanding choreographic achievements in film. Expanding beyond choreography, Becker has produced and creatively directed "Canada's Got Talent" and co-produced the Inaugural Celebration for President Joe Biden. His directorial flair was also showcased at the Pan American Games' closing ceremonies in 2015. However, Becker's path was fraught with hardship. He recounts the loss of his home during the financial crisis, a period during which he worked at FAO Schwartz Toy Store. It was this twist of fate that connected him with Kenny Ortega, sparking collaborations that propelled him to new heights. Paul Becker's narrative is more than a chronicle of professional success; it's a source of inspiration, showcasing the fruits of passion, ingenuity, and an unwavering spirit. His ongoing work in the realm of dance and choreography continues to motivate those who dream of a life in the creative arts. For our first episode in two months (), we've come back with a bit of a heavy one…mental health representation in horror. Starting with Scream 6 (2023) and working our way back to Psycho (1960), we talk about the negative effects certain representations of mental health in horror films have had. We're not mental health experts but two avid horror fans who believe this is an important conversation. While movies of the past can't be (and shouldn't always be) erased, what responsibility does the film industry need to shoulder when it comes to the representation of mental health in horror? Content warning: discussion of mental health and some specific mental health conditions (relative to their portrayal in certain films) Films/TV shows mentioned in this episode: Scream VI (2023) Split (2016) American Horror Story: Asylum (2011) Black Swan (2010) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Psycho (1960)
