Big DJ gigs with an intense lightshow and a strong focus on visuals have been there for a while – but it seems like they are having a new peak. With DJs like Anyma selling out the Sphere in Las Vegas, it sparks the question: Has it become more important how a show looks than how it sounds? In this episode, we are joined by cultural commentator and journalist Cameron Cook to talk about how visuals changed in the past years, what the trend is right now and how the future could look like. We're back for our first episode after the summer break. Or shall we say... Brat Summer break? With her sixth studio album, BRAT, released this last June, Charli XCX sparked what was arguably the biggest pop culture trend of the social media age so far. From underground producers serving up remixes to brands (and presidential candidates) jumping on the meme bandwagon, the British pop star with rave culture roots was just about everywhere all summer. In early September, Charli herself ended Brat Summer with a post on X. But is it really over? What will remain of it? How does the hype compare to other pop culture phenomena in recent times? And what's next in this hyper-paced era of mega trends and micro genres? Electronic Beats host Kikelomo and Juba sit down to serve up their very own takes on everyone's subject matter of the summer.
Joining our host, Gesine, for this Electronic Beats podcast is Mura Masa, a British artist hailing from the little island of Geurnsey in the English Channel. Since debuting in 2017 Mura Masa has amassed an array of accolades for his music, from multiple Grammy nominations to producing for Stormzy and Octavian, winning a grammy for his remix of Haim's ‘Walking Away', an Ivor Novello ‘Best Contemporary Song' nomination and much more. Throughout this podcast Mura Masa discusses his life on a secluded island, acoustic instruments and his many musical influences. As well as touching on working with Gorillaz creator Damon Albarn, the importance of friendship and community in the music industry and his first club experiences. Tune in for an excursion through the mind of this exciting songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
The guest in this Electronic Beats Podcast is Hania Rani, an award-winning pianist, composer and singer hailing from Gdansk in Poland. Hania was initially inspired to study classical music and was later introduced to jazz and electronics at music school, widening her interests and as she puts it, “mixing Chopin & Schostakovitch with Dave Brubeck and Moderat”. Other inspirations include composers such as Max Richter, Esbjorn Svensson, Miles Davis, Nils Frahm, Murcof, Portico Quartet, Radiohead and even The Beatles. But Rani's inspirations aren't just musical, she has drawn inspiration from places she has lived and visited. Over the past few years Rani's music has gained widespread recognition, earning many acclamations such as the Sanki Award as the “New Face of Polish Music” and Transatlantyk Golden Ark Award for “Best Young Polish Composer” amongst others. Recent years have seen Hiani scoring soundtracks for several movies, collaborating with the likes of Portico Quartet and Christian Löffler and performing live shows for ARTE and Cercle, her unfaltering drive has made Rani one of the most intriguing artists in the contemporary classical world. In this episode our Host Lindi Delight speaks with her about initial spark for her love for music, first touch with the piano, meaning of improvisation, classic and neoclassic music, Melancholie and much more.
