In this episode of The African American Folklorist, we honor Dr. Ebony Bailey as Folklorist of the month of May. Dr. Bailey is a dynamic scholar, writer, and cultural worker whose groundbreaking research intersects Black Literature and Folklore. Dr. Bailey explores how African Americans have historically been both represented as “the folk” and how they have powerfully redefined that term through literature, activism, and cultural intervention. We dive into her acclaimed article, (Re)Making the Folk: Black Representation and the Folk in Early American Folklore Studies (Journal of American Folklore, 2021), and discuss her public talk, Re(Making) the Folk: The Folk in Early African American Folklore Studies and Postbellum, Pre-Harlem Literature. Through this dialogue, Dr. Bailey highlights how early Black writers and intellectuals used folklore as a site of resistance, cultural affirmation, and narrative control. She also shares insights from her work as a museum researcher with Kera Collective and her leadership in equity-centered initiatives within the American Folklore Society. As a contributor to The African American Folklorist platform, Dr. Bailey helps shape the future of folklore by amplifying Black voices, reclaiming tradition, and challenging dominant narratives.Join us for a rich and necessary conversation on race, representation, and the reclaiming of folk knowledge.

In this episode, we explore the rich cultural legacy of Black American music, focusing on the evolution from slave seculars—non-religious songs of survival, work, and resistance—to the development of the blues. Through stories, historical insights, and music, we uncover how enslaved African Americans used music to communicate, preserve their identity, and confront hardship. They also used their traditional expression to resist and revolt against ideologies and beliefs not part of their traditions. We also highlight the contributions of early folklorists, musicians, and modern artists who continue to keep these traditions alive. Join us as we celebrate the resilience and creativity that shaped American music and culture.

Ever heard of these mystical guardians and tricksters?

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

We've crawled out of Halloween Humpfest but the creeping dread continues for just a little bit longer because it's time for another discussion in our overarching director topic for 2024. Yes, it is still a “dreary Year of von Trier” and what shit-hole year it's been. Heading down the final stretch, it's safe to say that the overall feeling of dread may bleed into the following year but we will be done with Lars von Trier, at least, until he gets around to making the third of his USA-Land of Opportunity trilogy. Today, we discuss the first of that trilogy and our introduction to Grace Mulligan in von Trier's twisted take on American Folklore with his 2003 film “DOGVILLE” and it has a hell of cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Stellan Skarsgård, Cloe Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall, James Caan and that's only half of them. John Hurt narrates a tale of Grace who is on the run from mobsters and cops. She stumbles upon a strange tiny town. The town is skeptical but they give her a chance to be part of the village if she proves herself helpful by doing labor for each member of the town. When the heat turns up and questions continue they may need a little bit more from Grace to justify her presence. Then a little more. Just a little more. If this all becomes too much can Grace escape? We see the clues along the way (dude is reading “Tom Sawyer”) but when it's all said and done, can glowing optimism make space for a sense of justice? All this within a minimal set design in which walls only exist within the minds of the characters. You know who made this movie so you should have specific expectations. That's right. Call the in-laws. It's movie night. In this episode, Geoff and Katrina fly into the world of witches, thanks to an article by folklorist Kay Turner. In her article titled, "The Witch in Flight" published in the Winter 2023 addition of the Journal of American Folklore, Turner discusses some of the reasons why we encounter so many winged females in myths, folklore, and fairy tales. Katrina describes some of the mythical magical flying females and how cultures have shaped how we view witches in the modern day. And then she tells the Norwegian tale of Tatterhood and the many witches and their personalities on display in the story. In 1900, Depot Charlie, Chief of the Tituni-Joshua people—whose ancestral lands are situated in southern Oregon—narrated the creation story of his people to an anthropologist, who subsequently documented it in Volume 28 of the Journal of American Folklore.  The Tituni-Joshua people had significant interactions with European settlers in the late 1700s, though the extent to which these encounters shaped Chief Charlie's account remains unknown. The Tituni-Joshua creation narrative is particularly significant for its depiction of the creator residing on the primordial waters in a sweat lodge, the mention of a foundation stone, the involvement of the First Man in the creation process, and the portrayal of the creator imparting instructions to the First Man prior to his ascension to the sky.Join us for this episode and visit us on the web at theancienttradition.com and www.youtube.com/@theancienttradition for more amazing comparative religion.

Folksongs of Another America: Field Recordings from the Upper Midwest, 1937–1946 (University of Wisconsin Press) first appeared in 2015 when it comprised of a hardback book, five CDs, and one DVD. It went on to win the “Best Historical Research in Folk or World Music” award from the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, was nominated for a Grammy for “Best Album Notes,” received universally superlative reviews, and sold out within a year. The project has now been re-issued as a paperback, albeit without any accompanying discs; instead the related tracks and film footage are now available for online access care of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library. It's not hard to fathom why this monumental work received so much acclaim. A groundbreaking multimedia endeavor, Folksongs of Another America is the product of decades of work by the distinguished folklorist, James P. Leary. Leary is, amongst other things, Professor Emeritus of Folklore and Scandinavian Studies and Cofounder of the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a former editor of the Journal of American Folklore, and a native of rural Wisconsin, which is one of the three states – along with Michigan and Minnesota – whose rich musical bounty is explored in this study. Leary sifted through over 2,000 field recordings, made by fieldworkers Sidney Robertson, Alan Lomax, and Helene Stratman-Thomas during the 1930s and 40s, to select the 187 tunes and songs that feature here. Together the chosen pieces create the impression of a region populated by immigrants from a host of different lands, as well as by Native Americans, all with their own musical traditions. For every track, Leary offers extensive documentation, information about the performers, and full lyrics (including in the original language with English translation as necessary which, given that the collection includes twenty-five languages, is often the case). The recordings themselves, which have been wonderfully restored and remastered, provide vivid aural experiences. Folksongs of Another America is, as noted by a reviewer for Deutschlandradio Kultur, “an exceptional achievement that demonstrates for the first time the full worth and cultural wealth of the Upper Midwest for music listeners.” Rachel Hopkin is a UK born, US based folklorist and radio producer and is currently a PhD candidate at the Ohio State University. Are zombies real or just something Hollywood is into nowadays? If you've ever seen the movie The Serpent and the Rainbow, you know the question is legitimate. That movie was based on a book by Wade Davis, who earned his PhD in part on the basis of his research into “zombification” in Haiti. Davis and others theorize that zombies are real, and that they are the result of specific drugs given to individuals against their will that produce zombie-like states and behavior. The modern drug Flakka is a current, frightening example. Other researchers disagree, noting that zombie lore is very old and encompasses notions that sound a lot like demonization and possession.Readings:Ackermann, Hans-W & Gauthier, Jeanine, “The Ways and Nature of the Zombi,” The Journal of American Folklore 104:414 (1991): 466-494Murtaugh, “Constructing the Haitian Zombie: An Anthropological Study Beyond Madness”William Booth, “Voodoo Science,” Science new series, 240:4850 (April 15, 1988): 274-277Neurophilosophy (Science Blogs), “The ethnobiology of voodoo zombification,” Sept 13, 2007Wade Davis, “Zombification,” Science new series, 240: 4860 (June 1988): 1715-1716Natalina, “Indonesian Zombie Photo: Real, Fake, or Misunderstood?” Extraordinary Intelligence blog, Sept 20, 2010YouTube: Zombie Drug BRAZIL ‘Cloud Nine‘ (2017)

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: October 26, 2018“Samhain” (pronounced "sow-in," with the "ow" like in "cow," or “sow-een,” with “ow” as in “glow”) is an Irish Gaelic term for the time of "summer's end,” as well as a festival to mark the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter which, in the Gaelic / Celtic calendar, marked the beginning of the year. Because the Celtic day began and ended at sunset, not sunrise, the festival was traditionally celebrated from October 31 to November 1. Sanhaim is the ancient backdrop to Halloween, not only in terms of the calendar, but also in terms of basically all the modern elements of that holiday. This episode investigates the history of Samhain and its curious links to the ancient biblical worldview of demons, giants, and the realm of the dead.Articles for this episode:In public domain, via archive.org, from Hastings' Encyclopædia of Religion and Ethics (ed. Sometime Between Dusk and Dawn Ghost Stories

Welcome to Sometime Between Dusk and Dawn Ghost Stories. This episode is written and produced by me, Jannette Quackenbush, with folklore drawn from many resources, including Uncle Remus Returns, Brer Rabbit and the Witch-Rabbit African American folktales collected by Joel Chandler Harris and The Journal of American Folklore.  There is more than just this podcast. You can buy my book series on Amazon and other bookstores. Today's story is Tailypo. An old woodsman finds there can be disastrous consequences when he takes something that does not belong to him.    The Y-City Cryptid Festival at Zane's Landing Park in Zanesville, Ohio, is coming up on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This family-friendly event is a mix of cryptid creatures near Muskingum County and pop culture. There will be craft vendors, various other vendors, food trucks, art, a beer garden, and much more, including me with my books to sell. When most think of local cryptids, they think of Bigfoot or Grassman. In years of old in Zanesville, this story was told around the hearth and based on old folklore of a creature called Tailypo and what happens if you take something that is not yours! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/betweenduskanddawn/support

Paul Bunyan is a giant lumberjack and folk hero in American[2] and Canadian folklore.[3] His tall tales revolve around his superhuman labors,[4][5] and he is customarily accompanied by Babe the Blue Ox, his pet and working animal. The character originated in the oral tradition of North American loggers,[2][4][5] and was later popularized by freelance writer William B. Laughead (1882–1958) in a 1916 promotional pamphlet for the Red River Lumber Company.[6] He has been the subject of various literary compositions, musical pieces, commercial works, and theatrical productions.[2] His likeness is displayed in a number of oversized statues across North America.[7][8]

A special shop talk episode featuring a historical perspective of the UFO field with Gene and cohosts Curt Collins and Tim Swartz. Among the topics that will be discussed is the possibility that some UFOs — certainly not all sightings — might have resulted from flights (or crashes?) of test aircraft. And what about possible government mind control experiments involving some flying saucer contactees and abductees? Among other cases, Curt has taken a particular interest in the 1980 Cash-Landrum Texas UFO Encounter. After a career in retail management Curt began writing about UFOs, with a special interest in re-investigating that paradoxical case, from which the eyewitnesses evidently suffered from an assortment of injuries and illnesses. Curt has written entries for such books as "American Myths, Legends, and Tall Tales: An Encyclopedia of American Folklore," "UFOs: Reframing the Debate," and "What's Wrong with this Picture," examining the “Roswell Slides” fiasco.
