For the Ninth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories I'm joined by guest Tommie Sunshine representing stories from Chicago, Atlanta, New York."Tastemaker to tastemakers, curator and shapeshifter, Tommie Sunshine is renowned for his reputation of being consistently ahead of the curve bridging the worlds of Rave, Disco, Tech House, and House while still standing firmly in the zeitgeist. Establishing his name as a fixture throughout the American Rave scene during the '90s, he became one of the most recognizable figures of the Electroclash movement during the early 2000s, his Rock & Pop remixes made him a key figure in the Blog House scene ('06-'09) and helped set the stage for the EDM boom of the 2010s. 31 years as a DJ and 37 years as a clubber gives Sunshine his unique perspective on the business & informs his present Rave Revival sound.Set apart by his iconoclastic productions, he is regarded as one of today!s most prolific remixers providing club-ready makeovers for countless household names, including Billie Eilish, Bob Marley, Katy Perry, Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Kim Petras, Nicki Minaj, Rosalía, Dua Lipa, Sofi Tukker, Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Presley, Lizzo, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kelly Clarkson, Major Lazer, Santana, and Fall Out Boy. Tommie"s original production career spans collaborations with artists such as Oscar nominated and Grammy winner Junkie XL, Chocolate Puma, Grammy winner James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, legendary producer Arthur Baker, House Music pioneer Felix da Housecat, Peaches, The Disco Fries, and many more. His music has been released on all of the biggest Dance labels in the world including Spinnin!, Ultra, Armada, Musical Freedom, Heldeep, Size, Revealed, Mixmash, Dim Mak, and Mad Decent amongst others. On Spotify alone his original production has reached 26 million listeners & 127 million streams. Tommie also wrote and recorded 9 tracks for several editions of Konami!s classic arcade game Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Now well beyond its 600th release, his label Brooklyn Fire provides a platform to young producers just getting started in the business giving their music mass exposure, DJ support from the biggest in the game & streams into the millions.Whether as a Producer, DJ or Artist, Tommie brings a unique enthusiasm to his craft; fueled by his encyclopedic (if not obsessive) knowledge of Underground and Pop music spanning the last half-century. His TV show After The Raves on Netflix took him around the world speaking intimately with Fatboy Slim, Solardo, Hardwell and Paul Oakenfold, and his deep musical knowledge and outspoken views have landed him airtime on numerous talk shows and radio programs. Sunshine, also known as a social media provocateur, has been known to cause an uproar in his firm stance on many issues most won't dare talk about & his activism has landed him on TMZ for gun control. Tommie served as an entertainment surrogate for the 2016 & 2020 Presidential campaigns of Bernie Sanders. He served 3 semesters and counting as adjunct professor at NYU - Tisch School Of The Arts - Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music & serves the Recording Academy as a voting member of the Grammys."Support the show

The complete EXTENDED mix (2 hours 40 minutes) of electroclash mayhem. This mix was a true labor of love, designed to give a decent impression of what the hipster electro scene was really like back in the early 2000's. It wasn't just new tracks being played — there was a whole 80's revival that happened, and this mix tries to capture the sounds that were in fashion, frequently mixed together, and influenced the sound of that time. Some of the tracks included were specifically NOT popular and are impossible to stream today — but they were underground records that I ...
Here's my much-anticipated interview with NYC DJ extraordinaire Dan Selzer (@newyorkendless) a/k/a Karen O.'s “friend Dan from Oberlin” about his role as a DJ in the so-called #indiesleaze movement and what the scene was *actually* like in reality. Dan is an amazing storyteller and some of his stories felt all too real to me! This is Part 2 of a multi-episode series on the #indiedance and #electroclash scenes from the early 2000s as depicted in the Lizzy Goodman's book, “Meet Me In The Bathroom.” BONUS: Listen to an excerpt from Dan's 2006 "Golden Limo" ...

De Australía tenemos a The Presets, combinando New Wave, SynthPop, Disco y Pop. Aquí escuchamos el temazo “This Boys's in Love” publicado en 2008. What happens if you combine Crystal Castles, Bark Psychosis, Claude Young, L.S.G, Daft Punk, Tiësto and Deftones? You get ‘End Of Sleep' by Baby Blue!Sophia Briggs is the mind behind an album that really peaked our interest earlier this year - a sort of mid-90's trance dream shot through the nightmare of the beginning of the start of the pandemic in 2020. After sharing some laughs over an Alanis Morisette comparison and having our interest peaked even further after discovering the album is constructed of no less than 500 samples, we new we had to invite Sophia on the show, which she kindly accepted!Over the course of this interview, we discuss Sofia's early years, getting into DJing, the Canadian music scene and her involvement in running the party s.M.i.L.e. We then move onto Sofia's relationship with Planet Euphorique, the story behind ‘End Of Sleep', her approach to sampling, production techniques and her vast pool of influences, from the likes of Detroit masters such as Claude Young and John Beltran, mid 90-s & early 2000's Tresor records, Trance, Electro and Electro Clash. We finish by discussing Sofia's plans for the future and some of her favourite current music, which you can support via the Buy Music Club link below. Special thanks to Sofia Briggs and Planet Euphorique for allowing the use of clips from ‘Lineman' and ‘Plastic Glass Wall' at the beginning and end of this episode.—SUPPORT BABY BLUE:‘End of Sleep': https://planeteuphorique.bandcamp.com/album/end-of-sleepInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/baby__blue_/Bandcamp: https://babybluelovesyou.bandcamp.com---SUPPORT ARTISTS HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS PODCAST: https://buymusic.club/list/awakeallhours-insights-015-baby-blue---SUPPORT AWAKE ALL HOURS: Patreon: www.patreon.com/awakeallhoursSoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/awk-all-hrs?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/

Producer and DJ are just a couple of Tommie Sunshine's passions that lead his life. Also, count on him being involved in activism, teaching at NYU, being a husband, and sober for the last 16 years! Tommie takes us through some of his journeys as a world-traveling DJ, what convinced him to get sober, and what he is doing to contribute to making a difference for the greater good. Tommie Sunshine Official Bio: Tastemaker to tastemakers, curator, and shapeshifter, Tommie Sunshine is renowned for his reputation of being consistently ahead of the curve bridging the worlds of Rave, Disco, House, and EDM while still standing firmly in the zeitgeist. Establishing his name throughout the American Rave scene during the '90s, he became one of the most recognizable figures of the Electroclash movement during the early 2000s and helped set the stage for the EDM boom of the 2010s. 29 years as a DJ and 35 years as a clubber gives Sunshine his unique perspective on the business & informs his present Rave Revival sound. Set apart by his iconoclastic productions, he is regarded as one of today's most prolific remixers providing club-ready makeovers for countless household names, including Billie Eilish, Bob Marley, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Sofi Tukker, Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Presley, Lizzo, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kelly Clarkson, Major Lazer, Santana, and Fall Out Boy. Tommie's original production career spans collaborations with artists such as Oscar-nominated and Grammy winner Junkie XL, Chocolate Puma, Grammy winner James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, legend Arthur Baker, House Music pioneer Felix da Housecat, Peaches, The Disco Fries, and many more. His music has been released on all of the biggest dance labels in the world including Spinnin', Ultra, Armada, Musical Freedom, Heldeep, Size, Mixmash, Dim Mak, and Mad Decent amongst others. Tommie wrote and recorded 9 tracks for several editions of Konami's classic arcade game Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Approaching its 600th release, his label Brooklyn Fire provides a platform to young producers just getting started in the business giving their music mass exposure, DJ support from the biggest in the game & streams into the millions. Let´s celebrate the end of 2021 with a Hi NRG mix I played back @PARKS for the Feminist Futures Salon. It is an hommage to the old gay club sound which was shaped by the queer icons Sylvester James and Patrick Cowley. Hi NRG will always be connected with the tragedy of the Aids pandemic, which took so many queer lives too soon. This mix highlights some of the most important tracks of that time and coats them with a swirl of Electroclash, which itself is a revival of the old gay disco club sound.
The legendary and loquacious DJ Sammy Jo came to my NYC headquarters in 2019 to talk the importance and history of queer NYC nightlife, Jackie 60, Daniel Nardicio, Michael Schmidt's Squeezebox, Johnny Dynell & Chi Chi Valenti, Justin Vivian Bond, joining the Scissor Sisters circus, the birth of Electroclash, Larry Tee, “Top Choppers”, hott garbage, getting banned from the Barcelona W, Click'N'Drag, Matt Dillon's evergreen hotness, bottle service bummers, DJ Nita's secret after hours bops, Mattachine, the brilliance and loveliness of Detox, Faye Dunaway's special beverage service, Club Cumming, and quite possibly Jake Shears

First, I refocus my plans to stick to routines that help my mental heath and overall functioning. Then, I talk about subcultures and online communities. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
We thought this week it would be super fun to talk about some of the Hipster subcultures and the trends behind them. Specifically the Scenesters, Electroclash, Ye Oldes, DIY and Freak Folk. We also have some great messages from Dani and Kristen!
'Shadow in the Cloud' composer Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper is the guest. Plus, Canadian electronic artist Mecha Maiko joins for a new, probably regular segment. Also featuring new music by Blanck Mass, Desire, and Hannah Peel, along with some gems from SOPHIE (RIP) and Marcos Valle & Azymuth.

Phil Manley is a west-coast based rock musician and producer. He runs El Studio in San Fransisco, and he handles the guitar, keyboards, bass, and vocals in bands Trans Am, Life Coach, Terry Gross, and Oneida among others. His band Trans Am spearheaded the Electroclash movement in the 90's and continues to melt faces around the world. We had very pleasant chit chat in his studio about recording very loud bands, Krautrock vs. punk rock, missing the "normal days" of Bush, touring in Europe with a Bush mask on, and how to sheild your kids from the apocalypse. Episode sponsor: Mother Earth. Opening music: Marchandise by Fugazi, performed by Pierre de Gaillande with James Fletcher, drums. Songs: Orlando, 4738 Regrets, Bagged Agenda, Night Dancing, Cocaine Computer, Alles Verboten, Climbing Up the Ladder, Thing, Washington, DC, and Uninvited Guest by Trans Am. Earthen Sculptor and Abide by the Fucking Champs. Fireball by Life Coach. Shameless Impostor by Terry Gross. Outro music: Nickels and Dimes by Golden. elstudiosf.comthrilljockey.com/artists/trans-am
