TRANSCRIPT Welcome to Popeular History, a library of Catholic knowledge and insights. Check out the show notes for sources, further reading, and a transcript. Today we're discussing another current Cardinal of the Catholic Church, one of the 120 or so people who will choose the next Pope when the time comes. Ignatius Suharyo HARDJOATMODJO, who is generally addressed with the Suharyo part, was born on July 9, 1950 in Sedayu, a community right near the middle of the southern shore of the Island of Java. Home to over 150 million souls and therefore the most populated island in the world, Java hosts over half of Indonesia's population, with the remainder spread out across the other 17,000-odd islands that together make up the archipelagic nation, which was newly independent from the Dutch colonizers when Ignatius was born. More Muslims live in Indonesia than in any other country, leaving relatively little room for any other faith. Christians Make up about 10% of the population, with Catholics in particular being about 3% of the overall total. Ignatius' father had come from a Muslim family, being the only Catholic in the lot, while Ignatius' mother had originally practiced Javanese folk religion with her family, though she later became Catholic. When Ignatius' convert parents embraced Catholicism, they ran with it, resulting in four of their ten Children entring the Church: two of his sisters became nuns; one of his brothers entered a Trappist hermitage, and of course Ignatius himself, who will be our focus today. Ignatius' seminary studies were done locally, first at the St. Peter Canisius Minor Seminary in Mertoyudan, then at the Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta, where he got a degree in theology and philosophy in 1971. In 1976, Ignatius Suharyo was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Semarang by Cardinal Darmojuwono, who incidentally was the first Indonesian Cardinal. My sources are pretty thin after that, but I assume he did priest stuff in Indonesia until he went off to study in Rome, which I guess still falls under the umbrella of priest stuff. in any event, he wound up with a doctorate in Biblical Studies from the Urbaniana in 1981. When he came back to Java he took on several teaching roles at various institutions in Yogyakarta, eventually becoming dean of Theology at Holy Dharma University from 1993 till 1997. I did a double take when I saw that name, Holy Dharma. Dharma is definitely more of a Hindu and Buddhist concept. So I took a closer look, and as near as I can tell–there are some discrepancies so take this with a grain of salt– but certainly it looks like the Jesuits are involved, which makes all the sense in the world if you know the Jesuits. Speaking of Jesuits, in 1997 when Father Suharyo's white phone rang and JPII appointed him the Archbishop of Semarang, it was the Jesuit Cardinal Darmaatmadja, Indonesia's second Cardinal, who consecrated him. In 2006, Archbishop Suharyo got a second hat when he was made the Military Ordinary for Indonesia, a post he still holds at time of recording. Not much later, in 2009, he was made the coadjutor Archbishop of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, a city larger than New York. The following year, his predecessor retired and Archbishop Suharyo dropped the coadjutor part of his title, and from here on out he's Archbishop of Jakarta. There's a bit of an interesting wrinkle though, as Indonesia is actually in the process of moving its capital entirely, off the crowded island of Java–and away from polluted Jakarta–onto the roomier and healthier island of Borneo. Seriously, Borneo is about 40 times less densely populated than Java, though of course the plan is to draw about 1.9 million people to the new scene there, so that's going to put a dent in the ratio. The new capital, Nusantara, is set to be opened on August 17th, 2024, which is, incidentally, after I'm writing this but before this gets released, so you can let me know how that went. It'll be interesting to see how the Church handles the new arrangement, I expect the new Capital will get its own Diocese in time, but the Church isn't known for turning on a dime, and even after the transition is complete, smoggy Jakarta will still be Indonesia's largest city by far. In 2012, Archbishop Suharyo was elected President of the Episcopal Conference of Indonesia, a post which he held until 2022, and in 2014 he was made a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Archbishop Suharyo, who had been ordained by Indonesia's first cardinal and consecrated by its second, was made Indonesia's third cardinal in October 2019, though he didn't take formal possession of his titular church until August 28th 2022, the day after that year's consistory. Something something COVID, something else something else, when in Rome. In 2020, Cardinal Suharyo was added to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialog, which makes sense, given his placement in a country where the majority of the population is Muslim. Speaking of, the Cardinal has noted that having prayers available in the vernacular language has a special appeal to Indonesians, as the local Muslims pray in Arabic even though they don't speak it. Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo is eligible to participate in future conclaves until he turns 80 in 2030. Today's episode is part of Cardinal Numbers. Stay tuned to see if today's Cardinal gets selected for a deeper dive in the next round! Thank you for listening; God bless you all!

Gizem Üstüner is an artist and researcher based in Amsterdam, whose work is a direct confrontation with the realities of precarity, migration, and womanhood. In recent years, she's been traveling to Yogyakarta, Athens, Istanbul, and back to Amsterdam for the long-term ‘Low Budget Projects'. Wherever she goes, Gizem seeks to build solidarity through one-on-one exchanges with peers navigating struggles similar to hers. Over coffees, cigarettes, nights out, or moments of protest, she listens, connects, and shares in the everyday tactics and resistance strategies that cultural practitioners develop in response to the cultural, economic, and political infrastructures they inhabit. In this podcast, we discuss the different chapters of Low Budget Projects, and what they tell us about transparency, solidarity, humor, and resistant joy among art workers' communities. Gelombang penolakan terhadap revisi UU TNI masih santer meski sudah diketok DPR menjadi undang-undang. Unjuk rasa bahkan kian meluas ke berbagai daerah seperti Majalengka, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Palangkaraya, Balikpapan, Semarang, Lumajang, Makassar, hingga NTT. The Channel: A Podcast from the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS)
This episode features a conversation about contemporary Indonesian politics, with a special focus on the role of Islam. In October 2024, Prabowo Subianto was sworn in as the president of Indonesia. In the Presidential election back in February 2024, he had quite handily defeated his two competitors, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, with 59% of the popular vote. This 2024 election was the third time that Prabowo tried to become president, after he lost in 2014 and 2019 against Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. The political competitions between Jokowi and Prabowo on occasion turned quite ugly. Not infrequently, it was accusations that the other was the "wrong kind" of Muslim that made it ugly – with the effect that the two candidates always appeared like irreconcilable opponents. But when Jokowi could no longer compete in the 2024 elections after his second term was up, he surprised many spectators by endorsing none other than Prabowo as his successor as president. Prabowo, in turn, selected Jokowi's son, Gibran Rakabuming, as his running mate. This episode is hosted by Dr. Verena Meyer, an Assistant Professor of Islam in South and Southeast Asia at Leiden University. She is joined by three colleagues with expertise in Islam and politics in contemporary Indonesia: (1) Dr. Zainal Abidin, who teaches at at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and also serves as Director of the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies; (2) Dr. Saskia Schäfer, Head of a Research Group about Secularity, Islam, and Democracy in Indonesia and Turkey at Humboldt University in Berlin; and (3) Dr. Taufiq Hanafi, postdoctoral researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) in Leiden. Welcome to the three of you, and thank you for joining us. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Kencan Dengan Tuhan - Senin, 6 Januari 2025 Bacaan: "Hati-hatilah supaya jangan engkau melupakan TUHAN, Allahmu...." Amin. (Dod).

The Papal Visit In early September, Pope Francis visited Indonesia as part of a tour of the region. It was the third papal visit to the country after tours by Pope Paul VI in 1970 and Pope John Paul II in 1989. This trip included Indonesia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and Singapore. The theme of this visit to the world's largest Muslim nation was ‘Faith, Fraternity and Compassion' and appeared to build on an earlier visit to the United Arab Emirates in 2019. On that trip the Pope and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar co-signed a statement known as the Abu Dhabi document, in which they declared a shared commitment to promote reconciliation, fraternity and with the aim of universal peace. The three-day visit to Jakarta was declared a success by the Vatican and Indonesian observers alike, with the Pope highlighting and praising Indonesia's commitment to interfaith harmony. So, what was the aim of this papal tour for the Vatican and the Catholic Church in Indonesia? What were the Pope's key messages and how was he received? And what lingering influences might this visit have for this minority religion of 9 million people, but also for society more broadly? In this week's episode Jemma chats with Bagus Laksana, the Rector of Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta. He is author of 'Muslim and Catholic Pilgrimage Practices: Explorations Through Java' (Routledge, 2016). In 2024, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jemma Purdey from the Australia-Indonesia Centre, Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales and Tito Ambyo from RMIT. Barcelona. Venice. Paris. Amsterdam. Bali. Machu Picchu. The Great Barrier Reef. These are all popular tourist destinations - maybe even TOO popular. How has overtourism impacted a city? Is overtourism a pro or a con?During Leah's most recent travels to the Netherlands, she hung out with friends that lived outside of the popular, Amsterdam. A large discussion was had when they told her about the minor changes being done to prevent more overtourism in the city. This led to learning and hearing more from locals, articles, etc. about the impacts of what tourism can do for the people living there. What are your thoughts of overtourism while traveling, and what feasible suggestion(s) do you have to help combat the negative effects of it?Timestamps:0:58 Episode intro2:40 Coffee and Tea of the Episode4:20 Start of main episode - How do you define Overtourism?7:30 Oxford Dictionary Overtourism definition8:05 Overtourism in Barcelona18:40 Overtourism in Amsterdam32:30 How Copenhagen is handling overtourism37:44 Overtourism in Venice44:45 EU's ENTIAS Entry Fee 45:30 Overtourism at U.S. National Parks49:00 Thailand's Visa Entry updates Links mentioned in episode:• Why you should have a Latin American Summer• @mauiandtrizzy 's 3 Days in Yogyakarta, Indonesia Support the Show.---Always protect yourself on your travels: Sign up here to get your own SafetyWing Nomad Insurance (affiliate link).Curious about our favorite gear, other excellent podcasts, and sneak peaks at upcoming IRL events and episodes? Mari sambut: Partai Indonesia Raya!

Thank you so much for tuning in to this week's episode and please check out all of the links below to get to know Cat more, see her amazing art, and find ways to connect. About the artist: Cat Crotchett has been a professional artist for over 30 years. In her paintings, she uses patterns to vividly represent human emotions and experience, and to convey not just beauty but tension. Her current work represents an intersection of information, emotion and physical limitations. The patterns and colors inhabit spaces that are similar, but not the same- suggesting multiple realities in the same composition. Each composition is engaged in some form of conflict, suggesting our shared moment in American history, our creative resilience, and transformative struggles. Cat has been a regular presenter and instructor at the International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and has taught painting workshops in the United States and in Indonesia. Cat earned BFAs in Painting and Art History from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and an MFA in Art from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. She has an extensive exhibition record that includes solo exhibitions at Vanderbilt University, the University of Illinois Chicago, the Maryland Institute of Art and Barbaran Segaragunung Gallery in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia. In addition, she has a considerable record of international and national group exhibitions, has been recognized through various grants and has been a fellow at several artist colonies- including a 2022 Golden Foundation for the Arts experimental residency. Her work is represented in numerous private and public collections. She was the 2021 Distinguished Faculty Scholar at Western Michigan University, and 2015 College of Fine Arts Roehrick Distinguished Professor also at WMU. She teaches painting in the Gwen Frostic School of Art. Cat lives and works in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is represented by Addington Gallery in Chicago, IL.
