In this special episode, Richard talks to three people he believes best represent a new breed of customer-focused vendors: Andrew Wallace, Managing Director and Chief Product Officer of SmileBack; Jason Kemsley, Technical Director of UpTime Solutions; Tim Swainson, Sales Manager at Kemp Technology. They talk about how SmileBack don’t rely solely on automation to make decisions about clients, how UpTime stand out from the competition by making the customer the focus, and how Kemp radically overhauled licencing to suit their MSP clients’ needs. They also touch on the importance of empowering staff and improving customer relationships, why you should be flexible with the contracts you ask people to sign up to, and how working from home actually makes learning easier for engineers. Asset managers, hedge funds and private equity firms, collectively managing almost $1 trillion, call on Tim Mulrooney for his investment advice. As William Blair’s service analyst, he covers 20 stocks, but spends more than 50% of his time focusing on the pest control and three key players, Rollins, ServiceMaster and Ecolab. Tim and Paul have debated valuation, asset price inflation, industry growth and fundamentals for years, but today he joins Paul and Patrick on The Buzz. When Tim isn’t consuming The Boardroom Buzz, he’s consuming Milk Bottle Cookies. And when he isn’t consuming cookies, he is shopping for pest control services to test providers — rotating service providers as often as a termite swarm. In an episode that barely squeaked by Tim’s compliance department, join Paul and Patrick as Tim details his thesis on the growth of the pest control industry and what he’s telling investors about where to put their money. “Simplicity--the art of maximizing the amount of work not done--is essential.” ~From the 12 Principles of Agile Software https://agilemanifesto.org/principles.html It is one of the most basic responsibilities of the Product Owner and one almost every PO struggles with... saying "No" to people who ask for things. A Product Owner who can't say No is going to end up with a Product Backlog jammed full of things that can't be done. This puts the entire organization at risk. At the same time, a PO who is constantly telling Senior Management "No" to all their requests may find themselves "being offered the opportunity to enjoy working at another company." So, how do you go say "No" from a position of strength and safety? How do you know that saying "No" is really the right response? What kind of challenges do you need to be ready for? How can you prepare for those uncomfortable moments when you are waiting to see if you will be thanked for your honesty and candor, or told to leave your ID badge with HR on your way out? In this episode of the Reluctant Agilist, Tim Wise joins me to talk through various aspects of the challenge of saying "No." Links from the Podcast Agile Day Atlanta http://agiledayatlanta.com Books Mentioned Turn the Ship Around - L. We all know that Baby Boomers are the largest generation in America and are also the largest generation that owns small businesses. It is speculated that two-thirds of the businesses in the market are owned by baby boomers, which would be equivalent to more than four million businesses, and now they are coming to the market. A lot of Baby Boomers are still focusing on growing their businesses but there is an increasing number of sales due to retirement. Both Andrew and Jessica have written articles about Baby Boomers and the opportunities that arise from both the Baby Boomers reaching the right time to sell and for the Millennials that already own small businesses and could acquire another business to expand and grow. On the other hand, this can also put some pressure on prices as a result of simply applying the rule of supply and demand but that hasn't happened yet. There is also a demographic factor nowadays since people are working later in life. The younger Baby Boomers are not going to be 60 years old until 2024 and most of them are very much focused on growing their businesses.
